Having grown up in Markham, a city where every other restaurant serves Cantonese food, I have very…read morehigh expectations of authentic Cantonese food. Ng's has become the staple option in Ottawa and by Ottawa standards, is likely one of the best the city has to offer. I've been completely turned off by Ottawa dim sum so my review is based on their dishes. The standard go-to items are pepper salt squid, sweet and sour pork, seafood chow mein, stir fried king mushrooms with pork jowl and the taro duck. Most of the dishes have wok hei, the distinct charred aroma that skilled chefs capture through the ingredients and oil meeting the intense heat of a wok flame. The flavour and quality have been consistent through the years and the menu is large and well priced though occasionally the food is a touch more greasy or lacking in wok hei. Seafood specials can be found on a big chalkboard on one of the walls, though it is only written in Chinese so you'll have to ask about it if you can't read it. PS. 10% discount for cash payments!

I had the buffet lunch ($14.50) at Golden Bowl with a couple of girlfriends and I can sum up my…read morefeelings in two words, or one emoticon: sad face :( The buffet was incredibly small, only about 10 items, and the food in my opinion was on par with the likes of Manchu Wok and other such food court Westernized Chinese food vendors. Actually, the best of the food was Manchu Wok caliber, some items did not even meet this low standard, at least not in my opinion. The place has been around for decades and it would appear to me that no renovations have been made for decades. On the buffet was: wonton soup, egg rolls, chicken balls, salt and pepper fried chicken pieces, garlic spare ribs, vegetarian fried noodles, chicken fried rice, beef and vegetables stir-fry, fried chicken wings, and chow mein. So only 10 "real items" then they had stuff like pineapple sauce, sweet and sour sauce, almond cookies, and some sort of deep-fried dough pieces. No ice cream! :( Let's start with the good: the chicken balls were filled with lean white breast meat and the meat to batter ratio was pretty good. They weren't all dough. They were crispy, and if one were to like sweet and sour chicken balls in general, I think that one would enjoy these. The egg rolls were also pretty good. They were very crispy and the wrapper was thinner and crunchier than I've had at other places. The filling was ground pork and vegetables and had a strong five-spice fragrance to it. The wonton soup was also not bad. I liked that the soup had some leafy greens in it and wasn't overly oily/greasy. The actual wontons were a bit mushy, but the filling to wrapper ratio was good. The flavour was good. The unremarkable: chicken fried rice, vegetarian noodles, beef and vegetables stir-fry, and garlic spare ribs. The bad: the salt and pepper fried chicken pieces I found very weird. The meat was dark meat and had a strange texture. It was too salty and not that peppery to me. The "I did not try it because it did not look appetizing to me": fried chicken wings (looked really dry and greyish), the chow mein (I hate bean sprouts), the almond cookies (looked store bought) and the crunchy fried dough things. Service was nice and efficient. We were greeted right away and led to our seats. We were given water shortly after and our waters were refilled often and without having to ask. When we first arrived a bit before noon, there were only a few patrons, but after 12pm the place got really busy, so it looks like there's definitely a market for this kind of food, it's just not my jam. There's free parking in their private parking lot beside the restaurant.

Horrid. Just horrid…read more This is hands down one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. This is a buffet restaurant with both lunch and dinner buffets. Showed up at 1245 for the 12-2pm buffet. The buffet table was quite depleted but was told" new food coming". The only new food provided were a tray of deep-fried chicken balls and egg rolls. There was no vegetable dishes. The soup was a thin layer in the bottom of a pot. The dozen or so patrons in the restaurant were forced to scrape the bottom of the food containers for the scraps of food available. There was one tray with some greasy fried rice, another with a handful of noodles. And that was it. It was so unbelievably horrible i took some pictures and have posted. This was the state of the buffet at 1pm, halfway through lunch service. So, so disappointed to be charged 12$ for this. There are good buffet places in Ottawa, but this is not one of them. Based on my dismal experience i would strongly recommend that you give this one a pass.

Ok, no problem, I got the Dinner 2B instead. The menu price was $30.95 but the price went up as I was charged $32.95. I get it, the Pandemic has been hard for some businesses. It took about 20 minutes, so I left and drove to a nearby cafe to get a drink. When I came back about 25 minutes later the food was ready and waiting for me. It was in a paper bag and stapled at the top. I put it in my trunk and drove home. When I got home, I opened my trunk and the paper bag was wet and ripped. Some of the containers were rolling around in my trunk. The soup had leaked and the inside of my trunk was wet with broth. I was very thankful that I asked to have the Wonton soup instead of the Hot and Sour soup. I think the latter would have been a bigger mess. So I brought the food into the house and I saw that there was a small hole in the lid of the soups. Gah! I guess this is good for venting of the soup, but very bad for transport! If you get takeout from this place and get soup, make sure you secure the bag, so it stays completely upright. Anyway, the food itself was ok overall, some dishes were better than others. The Wonton soup was pretty good. You get 2 wontons per soup. There was a good amount of filling (ground pork), so they weren't mostly wrapper. The broth had green onions and Chinese cabbage in it. It was not too salty. The General Tao Chicken had a spicy kick to it, which I liked. It was all dark meat though, but not too gristley at least. The batter was a bit soggy. However, the flavour was good. This dish did not contain any vegetables. The Hunan Beef was a bit chewy. It too had a nice spicy kick to it. This dish had lots of vegetables in it: broccoli, onions, carrots, water chestnuts, celery, green peppers, and baby corn. It also had mushrooms. The chicken fried rice was mostly plain fried rice, with a few small pieces of chicken here and there. It was ok. The spring rolls were also ok, but nothing to write home about. It had ground pork and onions in it. Overall, not a bad meal, but I personally did not find it anything special that would make it stand out in a crowd. Although, it's not a bad choice if you live in the area. I noticed that they do sell dim sum, which is not that easy to find in Ottawa, let alone the suburbs of Ottawa, so they do have that going for them. The restaurant is in a strip mall with free parking.
