After tons of research, I decided on Black Square for a tiny piece of ink I'd been wanting for a long time. Black Square itself both is, and isn't, your classic tattoo parlour. It's got the standard stencils on the wall and has a little of that "we were drunk, it was 3AM and my friends dared me to do it" vibe when you first walk in, but...trust the reviews, I suppose? At the same time, the artists are super welcoming, there's T-Swift blaring on the speakers and none of that holier-than-thou boys' club attitude that you can get with some shops *cough* White Rabbit *cough.* Anyway, Ryan was my artist and he was AMAZING. He was such a sweetheart and never made me feel like an outsider because I wasn't covered in tats head to toe. His attention to detail was second to none, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Writing this review on behalf of my friend, who was the one who got tattooed. She had discovered this place through a friend who often gets tattooed here and knew this place would be a great fit for what she wanted. She really enjoyed Thom's style-- he specializes in floral designs and she was looking to get a lavender tattoo, so it was perfect! Thom was very professional and patient, letting my friend make several tweaks to the design before deciding on the final tattoo. My friend was nervous and wanted to make sure the design was perfect before committing to anything, and he was very understanding and did several drawings to make sure it was exactly what she wanted. The final product turned out AMAZING. It was very quick but the attention to detail is stunning. Her and I were both very happy with the service and the experience, and I know where I'll be going if I ever decide to get a tattoo. Love this place! read more

This shop is terrible, I went here with a friend after my friend read the two yelp reviews. Clearly whomever wrote the previous reviews is ignorant to the tattoo scene in New York City. The portfolios did not impress me at all, and the artists work all looked extremely inexperienced. The shop itself is steps away from much better shops such as; Fly Rite Tattoo, Saved, and Goose. It is also a short train ride away from Three Kings, East River, Kings Avenue, New York Adorned, SenaSpace and even Wooster Street Social Club. I was also taken back by the swastika tattoo on the palm of one of the artists' hand. I guess neo-nazis still need a place to get tattooed. The books are a novel idea, but that doesn't change my opinion on the tattoos. Everyone deserves the tattoo they get, but I would not advise getting tattooed here. Especially when New York is a city home to far superior tattoo shops. read more

I had a tattoo done a week ago. I walked in with a group of my friends without any prior appointments. Ryan was the one who helped me. I gave him my idea and he went back to sketch something up. He was extremely accommodating and helpful. He never once seemed agitated or annoyed when I made a change, or asked for the sizing to change even though this meant it was a complete new draw up. I walked in appointment-less for a simple line tattoo. I wasn't certain I was going to get it done that day--just shopping around for estimates. Blue Square gave me an accurate quote, and welcomed me to walk around the block and think it over because they had time for walk-ins all day. After I decided to go for it, they were very patient and friendly with placing the design. They're very affordable for the area, and incredibly professional while still making themselves available to questions and concerns from tattoo newbies.
