I was extremely nervous but received the warmest welcome from the staff there. I didn't ask for an elaborate design as I only wanted a Paul McCartney quote for my first tattoo. Although I was nervous about getting my first tattoo, the artist was kind enough to keep me distracted with polite conversation and warm energy. Four years later I went back to brooklyn Tatto for my second tattoo On July 23rd. Unfortunately Patricia is no longer at Brooklyn Tattoo, but I had the pleasure of meeting Ethan Morgan. I explained my idea with Ethan and helped me find the font. Due to time constraints I wasn't able to get the tattoo that so k scheduled my session for July 29th. Ethan was there on time. The session was about 4 hours. The pain wasn't too bad. At the end of the session Ethan told me that I would need to get the tattoo filled in. As of September 30 I got my tattoo filled in. I got my tattoo from here about a year and a half ago and never got around to writing a review - the experience was so good that I can't pass up the opportunity to give them 5 stars. Being the slightly neurotic person that I am, I researched tattoo places like crazy after deciding to finally take the plunge and get one. At the time I was living in NJ (now in Manhattan), did the research and selected Brooklyn Tattoo as the place where I'd get my first (and probably last) piece. I wanted script of a favorite quote from "Le Petit Prince" and was told Pat would be the best person to see. Walked into a small but clean parlor. When I first arrived I checked in at the front desk and provided them with necessary info. Pat came out shortly and took some time to view photos that I had brought of fonts that I liked. She was great at suggestions and even helped me find the fonts I had selected. She then made a stencil and careful placed it on my back. Her attention to detail helped me stay calm (and if this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life, your tattoo artist better be detail-oriented) She had me lean over a pillow (since the tat is on my ribs) and told me to relax. Honestly - I barely felt anything. What's more, the healing process was so easy and painless. Yes, my tattoo is not that big but it could have been much worse had I gone somewhere else. After she was done, Pat explained care instructions and I was told to call or come back if I had any problems and was sent on my way. Overall, was an amazing experience. Alright, so there have been some polarizing reviews of this place. For the record, I will confirm that they do use the outdated (and possibly health-violating) saran wrap method. My heart sank a little bit when I saw my artist open up his drawer and pull out some Glad Cling Wrap.* That aside, the staff here was wonderful. Adam was working the front desk when I came in. I was looking for an estimate and some availabilities, but ended up getting my design done on the spot because there was an open slot (my design was just simple text). I was an idiot who forgot to print out exactly what I wanted, and their computers had a very, very old version of Adobe Illustrator, so there was some trial and error to get a working copy. But everyone was helpful, patient, and accommodating. My actual artist was someone not listed on the website (maybe he's new or a part-timer?). His name was Ellie (sp?), and he helped me position my tattoo just right, going through a few attempts. It was a much better experience than the one I had at Red Rocket Tattoo in Midtown doing something similar. That was a month ago. I'm more or less all healed up now, and I'm noticing some very minor imperfections in some of the characters (I notice these things because I am a graphic designer, after all), but it's nothing I can't live with. I might go back for a slight touch-up but the saran wrap and other reviews are enough to deter me. *FYI, Adam (the co-owner) asked me how I found out about BKT2, and I told him Yelp. His response was that Yelpers love them. So it's a logical assumption that he's aware of the one major (and legitimate) complaint listed here. read more

Here are some things I learned, if you're getting a tattoo for the first time: DRINK WATER. Staying hydrated is an important part of healing, so make sure you do that, and try to avoid alcohol for at least the first 3 days, since alcohol dries you out. Use an unscented and gentle soap like a Dove bar when you're in the shower, and be gentle on your tattoo, leaving it out of the direct stream of water unless you're rinsing off soap. Don't rub soap into your tattoo, just a gentle swipe of the bar or a few bubbles lightly touched over it is really enough. Be liberal with your Aquaphor for the first 3-7 days, applying it 2-3 times a day to keep the tattoo from drying out. Studies have disproven the "let it dry out" method that you sometimes hear people advise when it comes to wounds, and the same could be said for your tattoo. After the first 7-10 days, if your tattoo isn't red or peeling, you can switch from Aquaphor to a regular, unscented and hypo-allergenic lotion like Lubriderm. If it's still peeling, keep up the Aquaphor for a few more days. No matter what you do, DON'T SCRATCH your tattoo! You can pat it or smack it, but don't you dare take a nail to it! Avoid sleeping on it. Use sunblock to prevent fading. And love it! I love mine :) read more

I sheepishly wandered through several NYC tattoo shops before deciding to stay in Brooklyn and go with Brooklyn Tattoo. Their shop appealed to me in several ways. For one, their tattooists are also conventional artists, and the shop doubles as a gallery -- really, folks, how many tattoo parlors have original paintings on the walls? Classy. The shop was also clean, and I found the staff particularly friendly (in stark contrast to a few other establishments, where I felt like I needed to flag someone down to ask questions, or one that had an entire procedure before booking you a half hour consultation with the artist, who -might- have had time to fit you in, at some point, within four months). I ended up working with Adam, who is experienced, knowledgeable, and a nice guy on top of it all. I had a very specific (and complex) design in mind that would have been a challenge for any artist, and he handled it extremely well. I provided two sketches of my own and worked with him over a few weeks as he prepared drafts. I think I nearly drove him crazy in process. That kind of patience was unexpected, and it really highlighted the professionalism that this shop clearly works to show. It was great work, and I've received numerous compliments from random people who've seen my tattoo. Brooklyn Tattoo recently moved from their old location (99 Atlantic Ave) to a new, larger studio at 99 Smith Street. It's worth a stop in, even just to see the art on the walls and the portfolios. Each artist has their own specific style. Adam's portfolio includes a lengthy history of tattoos based on Brooklyn landmarks - the WB Savings Bank, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. Awesome stuff. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. It is pricey, but I would rather invest big $$ on talent than something cheap and slapped together in some mom and pop shop above a fabric store or a hole in the wall. The staff are awesome to talk to as a distraction during the pain (I am a little bitch when it comes to a needle), they're VERY hygienic which is always a huge plus when it comes to healing, and the artists really work with you. I'm in love with my artist Rob! I found him on the shops website and went to his own that shows his work. His talent is incredible and I'm so glad I chose him! He's covering up a tattoo that's been haunting me for years and now you can't see any of it!! It's been two sessions so far (the outline first, waited 3weeks to heal and the second for color and shading) and it has looked awesome both times I've left. Went back to see Myke to touch up an dragon tattoo I got back in the day. It was so faded you couldn't really make out what it was. I'm so happy with how it came out! Plus since I wanted to add Cherry blossoms to my Koi fish (see my first review) Myke worked them in so that the dragon connects to the Koi. I'm in love with it and I can't stop looking at it. *I will continue to update this post as I continue to finish my tattoo* I've been admiring Adam Suerte's work for quite some time. As soon as I saw his work I knew he was "the guy" for the tattoo that I wanted. It took me a few years before I had the money for my masterpiece...but the time has come. I had an initial consultation with Adam at the shop and I told him the things I would like in my tattoo. He got back to me later that week and blew me away with his sketch. We set up an appointment for the following week, on a Thursday. I couldn't be more excited for Thursday to come...finally the day had arrived and it was time! Everyone in the shop was super friendly, personable and professional. The shop is super clean and the vibe is great. Adam put the sketch onto my arm for positioning, and nailed it the first time. He spent the next 4 hours tatting the outside outline on my arm and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. I got my first tattoo last night here. Willie was amazing. He was very patient and explained everything very well and answered any questions that I had. I texted him earlier and sent him pictures of some script and rings that I wanted incorporated somehow. He did a fantastic job drawing the intertwined rings. I want to get real with you for a second because after four tattoos, all at different parlors I can say this with confidence. No matter how much you plan, scrutinize and prepare to get a tattoo, it will never be exactly as you "expect" it to be. But that's not a bad thing. Tats are very personal pieces of art and working with skin is much different than drawing on a piece of paper. The curves and natural movement of your body can dictate the look and feel of your tat. Also, unless you're getting a large piece or multiple pieces, it's rare to form a deep and lasting relationship with your artist. If you're going to get a tattoo or considering a piece, especially if it's your first, make your judgments based on the artists previous work, their own tats and willingness to work with you. It will give you a sense of their style as well as person-ability. Tattoo parlors tend to have the same or similar feel, it's finding that right combo that will help you feel more confident in getting inked. With that said, I had been planning to get a tattoo of the word Força on my wrist for quite some time. Meaning strength in Portuguese which is part of my background, I feel the word represents much of who I am and what I have been through in my life. I originally picked a few intricate and delicate fonts and with the help of some friends confidently picked one. Imagining it on my wrist, I sent it to Brooklyn Tattoo for my Monday appointment. When I got to the parlor and met my artist Pat, she at first seemed standoffish which made me nervous at first. My original font was too small and when blown up was blurry and looked distorted on my skin. Since it wasn't workable, we opened PhotoShop and picked a similar font with characteristics my original choice had. After a perfect placement and alignment she got to work. I have to say that by far this was the most painful tattoo I have ever gotten. So much so that I almost saw stars but it was well worth it. When Pat put her glasses on and got to work, she took the original font I wanted and incorporated some of its characteristics into the one we picked making a custom font and look for my tattoo. After an hour of picking and choosing, chatting with Pat and a whole lot of pain I can confidently say that this was a 5 star tattoo experience and my favorite tattoo yet. Some nuts and bolts details for you. -They charge a $75 deposit which goes toward the cost of your tattoo. Work starts at a minimum of $75 + tax and goes up from there. - They take credit or debit over the phone for the deposit as well as cash but be sure to keep track of your receipt just in-case it gets lost or misplaced in the shop. - Appointments book up fast, so be flexible in when you can come in. - Pat rocks. I went here in 09' when I graduated from high school in hopes of getting my second tattoo I saw thier work and literally it looks like artwork, so yes I will give them that, thier work is amazing. Brooklyn Tattoo more than lived up to its glowing Yelp reviews. What a great experience I had there a few months ago. I should preface this by explaining that this was my first tattoo and that I am the last person on earth you'd expect to get one. Literally, on my first visit, some guy standing outside the store yelled, "You? YOU are getting a tattoo?" So I was nervous as hell going in here, and was visiting one afternoon after work to ask some basic questions about pricing and booking an appointment. The girl behind the desk was polite and gave me a lot of useful information. As we were talking, one of the tattoo artists, Gabe, came out and saw a picture of the design I brought in. He offered a lot of great advice about sizing and location. And most importantly, he was supportive and nice. He put my worries as an 'ink virgin' to ease and didn't make me feel like a baby for being a bit freaked out. Gabe showed me his portfolio of work (which was incredible), and feeling confident, I booked an appointment a week later. D-Day came, and Gabe delivered an extraordinary final product. His craftsmanship and talents were exhilarating to watch. The design I chose was a bit architectural, with many thin lines, and his precision was razor-sharp. Everyone compliments my tattoo and I am very happy with how it came out. Also, the parlor was clean and he explained all of the hygienic steps as we went. I will be back for #2 someday with Gabe and would sincerely recommend him to anyone. A few tips: 1. Tip the artist well. (I don't mean to sound preachy, just saw another customer rave about her tattoo and then leave NO tip...c'mon, a server takes care of you at dinner for 45 minutes, a tattoo artist leaves you with something you'll have for life. Pay up.) Also, they may ask for a deposit down to book an appointment ($75), so remember to tip on the full amount, not the balance due. 2. That said, the cost of the tattoo was less than I expected. They charge by the hour, not the size; a small complicated tattoo costs more than a huge simple one. Mine came to $250 for a 4" diameter black tattoo with a good amount of detail. 3. I would strongly recommend visiting straytats.com to upload an image of a tattoo, order it as a temporary tattoo in a few different sizes, and play around with its size / position on your body (I did a few versions of mine for under $10 total). I can't say enough about Chris Crowder, truely an amazing talent, also fantastic to work with, I came in with some inspiration pictures, and a big job of covering a small poorly done rose, and a small silly butterfly, the rose on my thigh, and the butterfly on my lower back. I had a thought that I'd like to cover them both with one huge rose and lace tattoo that would be my whole thigh over my hip onto my back covering the other one. I didn't know if that would be possible or what could be done. He has gone above and beyond with every single detail, with incredible precision. I was looking forward to getting my 3rd tattoo tonight. I had a 5pm appointment with Pat for a small line piece, and I showed up a little early. The receptionist let me know she was with another client and needed me to come back at 5:30. The reception area had no AC and it was sweltering, so I took a walk and killed 45 minutes in a cool store. When I came back at 530, I was told the wait would be another 15 minutes. Come 6pm, Pat was still working on someone else. I decided to leave. The receptionist said "this happens sometimes." Pat never came out from the back. I went a long way out of my way, wasted time, sweated, and was disappointed with this experience. I've had tattoos before and I understand that shops are laid back and flexible, but if you want to run a business you should probably try and keep your appointments with your clients, especially if the only reason you are keeping them waiting is to work on someone else. read more

Beware your deposit, it's real. I learned the hard way that if you want to reschedule your appointment, do it do the front desk, not the tattoo artist. I lost $80. The artist I'd scheduled three weeks prior was a bad communicator, mismanaged his schedule and footed me with the bill. I thought I reviewed this place, but I have not! So I got one of my last tattoos here by Robert and was really happy with the overall experience. I made an appointment and looked through the books and honestly everyone was really talented, but I lked the work that Robert did, so I booked him. Fortunately he was there so we discussed what I wanted and I told him I would email him with a file before we would meet again. Yeah, he never emailed me saying he got the email or the file, but I still showed up for my appointment. I wanted him to do something a little different from what the original artwork was ( an adinkra print), so he rushed back and forth until I approved of something. He was really quick at drawing and I felt really comfortable with him. He qouted the tattoo at about an hour, which is good, because I went by two recommendations that he was fast and had a light hand. I usually talk all the time because of anxiety when I get a tatoo, but I said about three words with Robert. The space is small and you're kind of right next to the next person getting tatted, but I didn't think it was a big deal. It's definitely not the place to bring a friend to watch, the space is really tight. Can I say that Robert did THE most precise lines and I've always had to go back for a touch up afterwards, but not this time. Even though this tattoo was drawn and not from the computer it is so precise. I really love it and it was one of the most painless tattoos I've had. He has a great light hand and I would highly recommend....but he's not there anymore. We've been slowly getting work done with Robert from even before he started here and he has been ever the amazing artist and consummate professional. His artistry, attention to detail and his impeccable cleanliness and mindfulness keeps us coming back! Brooklyn Tattoo is the perfect home for him because the environment is immaculate and runs like a well oiled machine. Willy, one of the owners, is a perfectionist by every account, so he runs a tight ship. Rob's art is very versatile. We've had work done that is Asian inspired, African inspired and medieval European and he has been comfortable with all of them. He can work from templates or even help you to create your own masterpiece. When the latter is involved, he has the patience of Job, which is essential for both crafting your piece, as well as ensuring proper placement. Measure thrice, stab once...that sort of thing. I actually went in after going to another place that's known for good quality, but when I told the artist my idea (at the other place) he claimed that colour tattoos do not look great on brown skin. Needless to say, I took my money and went back to Brooklyn Tattoo. There, I met Sarah who listened to my ideas, and together we came up with a way to tattoo a large sunflower with some accents of colour. She found a way. She never said "oh, no that's impossible." Sarah was very down to earth and didn't rush the job. I felt as though the pricing was very, very fair. The tattoo came out great, and probably even better than my original idea. So, my husband and I left Brooklyn. *sob*. We had been planning on getting a marriage tattoo, but weren't able to decide on a design until finally we realized DUH let's get the Brooklyn Bridge. As fate would have it, we each found the perfect designs (thanks to googling "Brooklyn Bridge tattoo"), emailed them to each other, and realized 1) they were the same exact picture and 2) they were designed by Adam at Brooklyn Tattoo. We set up a consult, Adam drew up an image to make our tattoo "original" (so both we and the original person from the google image would have different, original tattoos), and promptly emailed it back. Setting up an appointment was easy and everyone we dealt with in the shop was super nice. Adam himself is awesome - really laid back, not too chatty, and pretty gentle (it was my husband's first, my fourth, and both of us thought it wasn't too bad). Nearly 3 weeks later, the design is still awesome and he did a really great job on the shading. We are really happy with the results and glad we got to commemorate our wedding and our "bon voyage Brooklyn" pieces here at Brooklyn Tattoo. A couple of notes: They take cards, they charge by the hour, and contrary to what they've done in the past, they now wrap tattoos in paper towels, yay! read more

This spot is super clean and full of friendly, talented artists. I come here and get Rob to do my work. Rob does all my work.. I follow him wherever the heck he goes! Hes professional, a great human being and is super talented! Hes so fast! I have a tiger on my arm and EVERYBODY comments on how beautiful it is. He's super fast and painless (as painless as it will get) I'm able to give rob an idea and basic sketch, and he always turns it into a work of art! This spot has awesome art and a great vibe. I, like many Yelpers, shopped around for the right tattoo place. I considered location, tattoo shop websites, and other Yelper reviews to make my decision. And I can say with all of my heart that this place is the freaking best!! My sister (18) and I (23) went here last Monday and had the greatest experience for our first tattoos: When you walk in there's this awesome, friendly feeling, and the place is so vibrant decoration wise. My sister and I were greeted by a gentleman named Adam (forgive me if I get the names wrong!), whom was patient, funny and we just got this comfortable feeling in talking to him. He asked us what we were getting, why were getting our tattoos, and for our IDs (as per procedure). My sister and I wanted the Wayne's World sign off: Party On Garth, Party on Wayne as matching tattoos. Afterwards we met the tattoo artist Chris, and talking to him was like talking to an old friend. He was also patient, and answered all of our questions. What made me feel the most at-ease what that I was able to ask any question I needed to Chris, and he answered all of them! It also made me feel at home, being my first time getting a tattoo. When Chris called us to the back to begin the tattoo process, he walked us through the steps of getting a tattoo. He also showed us and used all sterile equipment, which is a huge plus!! He talked to me throughout my tattooing process, and then congratulated me into the tattoo world when it was done! When my sister and I were tatted and happy, both gentlemen provided us with aftercare information. We could not be more freaking thrilled with our experience here! I came in here toward the end of the summer to get my first tattoo done, choosing it over five other places I had bookmarked because of the stellar reviews on yelp. I was getting a small piece done on my foot, and I was paired with Adam, one of the owners of the place. Having seen his incredible work on the website, I must borrow the words another yelper below, who wrote about getting their own simple tattoo done here - "Iike asking Sir Isaac Newton to do your kid's third grade science homework." Adam had just about a gazillion reasons to smirk at my wide-eyed newness - I asked a billion questions, nitpicked over the placement, and didn't bother to hide my dread over the pain. But he was a professional, through and through, answering any question I fired his way and patiently walking me through the process. When it came to the design, simple as it was, he exercised a more fastidious eye than I, worrying about things like negative space and blurring. I instantly knew I was in good hands. My piece was done within half an hour and wrapping it up was simple - a generous swipe of bacitracin and a paper towel with some masking tape over it. It seemed homely and I wished they'd used medical gauze or the like, but it did its job. I received a care sheet to take home, and Adam gave me some specific reminders, given the placement of my piece. He offered the first touch up for free and I had to go back a few times before he was willing to do it because he wanted to make sure it was fully healed before he went back in. A little inconvenient to make all those trips? Sure. But for something like a tattoo, I'd rather an artist who errs on the side of fussiness. Brooklyn Tattoo charges for its work by the hour (not by the size of the piece) and having compared it to a few other places, I'd say they're on the pricier end, but everything was done in a super sterile environment, the tattoo turned out just the way I wanted it, and it was done by the best artist possible. I thought the name was a bit pretentious, but then I cam here and got some work done on my birthday, and I think they deserve it. Great environment for getting stabbed with a needle - Ryoko did a piece on my inner arm and the colors and outline are amazing. My GF also got work done on the same day and hers looks amazing too. Went in on a Fri to ask about getting a tat on Sat. I knew what I wanted, a Lotus flower to cover up a "lets getting matching tattoos while stoned in Amsterdam" mistake I made with my ex several years ago. I spoke with Ryoko on Friday told her what I wanted and when I came back on sat she had two awesome choices for me. She did a great job, and although it needs a touch up to fully cover the old tattoo, you can hardly see it. The staff def did not have a "I'm cooler than you cause I'm a tattoo artist" attitude at all. I felt totally comfortable and wish I had gotten all my tattoos here! I'd gotten a wrist tattoo by Pat last year, which had come out great. So, I came back here to get a bigger tattoo (sleeve/arm.) This one required a good bit of shading, and a mix of colors. Again, Pat did a GREAT job, and I could not have been any more pleased with how it turned out!! She'd asked me to come back in, in about 3-4 weeks to see how it had healed, and to gage if it required a touch-up or not. The touch-up was to be free-of-charge, which was amazing! While there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way it had healed, she touched it up to "lock in" the brights even more. I'm very pleased with her work, and I also found the staff very courteous. Just don't forget to tip your artist!!! (Since I'm a newbie to this world, I was unfamiliar with all the proper etiquette.) I walked in here on my birthday (after reading Yelp reviews) to get a thigh tattoo. After talking to EJ at the front desk for a few minutes, I spoke to Mandy (my new favorite artist) and she spoke to me about what I wanted, how I wanted it to look, and placement. I ended up coming back later the same day with my other sister who may be going to get some touch ups and add ons done here as well. Nice people, clean spot, great work! So when the time came for my second buttcheek tattoo - a rather intricate depiction of Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of beer and brewing astride a dragon - I truly felt bad for the unlucky artist who would be face to ass with my hideous, hairy, lumpy dumper for close to four hours. The artist was Robert Bonhomme of Brooklyn Tattoo. Despite the horrific working environment (caused by proximity to anus, nothing directly attributable to the shop) Robert was extremely professional, and the tattoo, which he designed based off of very limited direction, turned out great. Afterwards I went across the street with a friend who had some work done earlier in the day to celebrate our new tattoos over tacos and margaritas, and Robert and the rest of the crew from Brooklyn Tattoo came over and had a couple drinks.
