Fresh ink by Dan Bones, 8.15.12
    Ansley W.

Last August, I went to Dan Bones at Leathernecks with an idea for a tattoo. I wanted an anatomical line drawing of the top of a foot, around 3x4". Before I decided on Dan as an artist, I did some research and I really liked his style. I knew it was perfect for my art. We talked, Dan agreed to work on a stencil, and I booked an appointment for a few weeks later. Dan had the unique stencil ready to go. This was my first tattoo, and he put me at ease. He suggested a slight adjustment with the placement that I think was for the best. He did great careful work and was easy to chat with. After an hour or so of work, I was done. Now nearly a year later, I get compliments on my tattoo all the time. If I ever want another tattoo int he same style, I'll go back to Dan for sure.

Went Friday 7/2. Ample parking surrounded by great restaurant options post tattoo. I have extensive ink work but this as my first visit to Leathernecks. Small, clean shop. Comfortable vibe. Some of the nicest artists and staff, I've ever come across. Zero attitude. Good music played at a reasonable volume, I was asked multiple times if I needed coffee and even offered lunch. Whether it's your first or your 50th tattoo , I highly recommend checking out the shop. Bugs was my artist.

Left: Kanji that says "mid-air"; Right: Steampunk hot air balloon covering the old tattoo.

I got a spur-of-the-moment tattoo when I was 21 and I've wanted to get it covered since the day after I got it. That was 18 years ago. The tattoo was a thick black kanji and I was afraid that I would have to get more black put on top to cover it. I visited Oogie at Leathernecks because she did an amazing tattoo on my friend. I had told her I wanted a hot air balloon. Oogie came up with the great idea for a watercolor, steampunk hot air balloon and we quickly looked through some pics online for ideas. I left my deposit that night and made an appointment for 2 months later. When I got to the shop, the day of my appointment, Oogie showed me what she came up with and I loved it! It was colorful and she managed to blend the old tattoo into the new one so no one could tell it was a coverup. Even though Oogie did not have a heavy hand, I was shaking and spasming pretty soon after she started. I think the location on my back was just very sensitive. Oogie was really patient with me and assured me that it was ok. She moved me into positions that would help with the spasms and we took breaks when needed. I think this is my last tattoo but if I ever change my mind, I would definitely visit Oogie again. I've been telling recommending her to friends who are looking to get new/coverup tattoos.

My first time getting a huge piece , I only had had an idea of where I wanted to place my tattoo. I definitely wanted something BEAUTIFUL and very feminine. I met with Charles and he drew me up a gorgeous piece! It took 3 long sessions one really longgggg painful one . In the end it was all worth it ! My tattoo is AMAZING ! Charles is so professional and he is truly talented in his craft. I honestly couldn't have had a better experience with him. Right off the bat he knew exactly what I wanted. The place itself has a really great vibe too. Clean, nice , and super trendy. This place is great ! I would recommend going here if you want to get an amazing tattoo! Go see Charles you won't regret it .

I had been trying to figure out for quite some time now was I wanted my cover up tattoo to be. I was referred to Oogie by a friend and my God I was not disappointed. Her work is absolutely superb! She gave me what I wanted and more! This is the first tattoo that I have that I actually love. I can't stop looking at it. The detail is sick. No photo I've taken thus far has given it justice. She is sweet as anything and made the almost 5 hours I was there fly by. The rest of the staff is also awesome. They kept asking if I wanted food or coffee or beverages. The decor is super cool and the place seems like a joint I'd want to hang out at. It's like one big happy family. I am just so overwhelmingly happy with my experience that I wish I could do it over and over again. If you're not getting tattooed here, you're absolutely missing out.

hands down one of the best in Brooklyn, im a stickler for tats when I get the itch I want it then and now and they were able to accommodate that, had to wait a few days but so worth the wait. Charles was my guy who Kenny the shop owner entrusted to get what I wanted done. I went to him because it was a military styled tat I wanted and who better to understand a marine than another marine and that's what happened. Super stoked with my new work and once done ready for a complete back piece

    This is what I got

Charged 100 dollars for a very simple nickel sized tattoo that only took three minutes.

Oogie is absolutely amazing! She gave me exactly what I wanted. I can't even begin to describe the amazing experience I had with her being that this was my first tattoo. She was very detailed, dedicated, and tattoo was just amazing.

They have the 19th St and 20th St galleries in Chelsea, as well as a gallery on Walker Street and another on E 69th. We stopped by the gallery on W 19th to see "The Great Unseen Collection: A Selection of Works from Joel and Carole Bernstein," which was great and included works by Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Audrey Flack, Alex Katz, and Alice Neel! (The exhibition closes on June 13 if you want to see it.) The gallery was on the smaller side but very minimalist, clean, and beautiful. (Across the street from 525 W 19th, is another David Zwirner gallery at 533 W 19th that has an exhibit of Lisa Yuskavage, so stop by that location as well if you're interested!) After our visit, I signed up for David Zwirner's email newsletter so I can keep up with future exhibits. The gallery's shows are museum-quality, and I look forward to visiting again in the future!

Could there really be a space focused on such a specific event, and how do you even get enough pieces to make it a complete museum? However, my curiosity made me want to check out THNK1994, and I was really glad I did. My sister and I went with my nephew, and I will admit that this place may seem lame if you didn't grow up knowing about this 1994 Olympic scandal. We tried to make our excitement contagious, but he could not be bothered. However, we enjoyed seeing the tabloid covers, memorabilia, and artwork inspired by the Harding/Kerrigan kerfuffle. There was one floor each dedicated to both skaters, and it was fun talking to the owners about the inspiration behind the museum. The museum also has rotating exhibits: when I was there, they had a Real Housewives-inspired show. It's a kitschy, campy place that is definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a unique experience!

The service is almost TOO nice, and my chai latte was completely delicious. I wish the seating was a bit more conducive to work; the tables hold my laptop and not much more, but they have plugs at nearly every seat, and a ledge on the right that can hold more than a few people. Also, the classical music being pumped in is so much more relaxing, not to mention more conducive to work, than the punk, metal, indie whatever that you usually encounter at coffee shops.
