They don't play any aggressive music or anything that made me uncomfortable. Had a appointment with Nash Hogan. He is a true artist and a great tattoo artist. This was my first time going to him, but I'll definitely be back again. I really value when artists can draw something original *based on* reference images and not just *rely on* collaging reference images together and copy-pasting from font banks. Not my first tattoo but you know when sometimes you need to just scratch that tattoo itch? That's what I've been going through. So I did my research and came across GTC (my old tattoo artist is no longer available but it worked out- keep reading!) I want to say that I've never been happier with the outcome of a tattoo. Seriously. I have 6. I wanted a small 'breathe' on my forearm by my elbow. Jason was my tattoo artist & can I just say that he was absolutely incredible?! He was so immaculate, thorough & patient and made sure that I was okay with the placement, font size & etc. I understand this is something they are supposed to do but he made me feel so at ease & comfortable. I was also asking him questions about tattoos that I've gotten done in the past & he was so helpful and offered the best advice possible! Felt like he was my tattoo therapist, lol. I meaannnn come on, why should he answer questions about tatttoos that I've gotten done moths or years ago from different people? It was REALLY quite a pleasant appointment. Also, I would like to state that I had called on Friday Jan 8th and they'd mentioned that it would be easier to set up a same day appointment. It was so easy and they were so so lovely. I chose to look at Greenpoint Tattoo because many of the artists there have a strong traditional style and it was perfect for the filler I wanted. Ryan was professional, fast, and the tattoo came out even better than expected. Even for such a small project, Ryan put a lot of thought into the design. One great thing about this shop is that they are an actual high quality shop that takes walk ins -- a rarity amongst the better artists of NYC, which I do appreciate for smaller filler projects that I don't want to book months or even years in advance. This review is not for Greenpoint Tattoo as a shop. In fact my interaction with the one employee during my visit was great. My issue is with the artist I was ignored by for over two hours. Rene Gibson aka Paradise has to be doing really well. He has amassed a huge social media following for his work. Unfortunately that following has made him indifferent to customers. I'll make a very long story short. I live in Austin, Texas and was tattooed by Rene on his first visit to the city last year. I was planning a trip to New York and decided to get another piece done while I was in the city. Schedule appointment. Pay $100 deposit. Show up 12 minutes early for my 1:00 appointment. Initially I was told Rene was running a little behind (not by Rene directly he actually never spoke a word to me.) I figured I'd stick around assuming the 3 women being tattooed when I arrived were almost done and I'd be in the chair shortly. Shortly after the group finishes I'm informed there's actually one other person before me. Wait? What??? Why schedule appointments? Still I decided to stick it out. Meanwhile Rene has not said a word to me about the delay. No "hey man thanks for your patience" or "Bear with me, i'm A little backed up." At 3:15 (two hours 15 minutes past my appointment) I decide to call it. Yes I lost my $100 deposit but, I saved $240 plus tip I would have spent on the 3 inch filler below my left elbow I was going to be charged. Everyone's time is valuable Rene. Do better. read more

I never write reviews- this is my first time writing one but I felt like I had to. They hella overcharged me so I was expecting the tattoo to at least be good, the ink spread because the needle they used was way too thick and the image is so uneven that it just looks like a blurry blob. Just got another great tattoo from Franco Maldonado, this time here at Greenpoint Tattoo Company. I knew I could expect a great design and tattoo from Franco, but this was my first visit to this shop and I had a really great experience. This was a pretty large tattoo, so we split it up to two sessions. On both visits, the other artists were relaxed, friendly and it seems they all respect each other's work. Real nice place and they get bonus points because no one laughed at me when I fell and busted my ass coming upstairs from the bathroom. Apparently, being tattooed for three hours has negative effect on my already clumsy person. Looking forward to future visits to this place. read more

I went here for two small tattoos - a wrench on my finger and script on my inner bicep, both black. I called in the morning to ask about walk-ins and they said they'd have time after 4:00. We arrived around 5:00 and I lucked out, because the shop owner, John, was available. I can't speak to John's artistry because what I wanted was so simple, but both tattoos were complete within a half hour and the linework is solid. He and the other artists were friendly which was refreshing because most tattoo artists I've encountered have been obnoxious assholes. They played good music and the artwork on the walls was interesting. My personal standard for tattoo shops is the bathroom - if you can't be bothered to keep your bathroom clean why should I trust you to tattoo me? I'm happy to say Green Point Tattoo passed in this regard. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because it wasn't quite as organized as I'd like and I didn't see any innovative work. I appreciate traditional/new school/old school but I dig it when artists aren't afraid to explore, especially with all the incredible things happening out there (hyper realism, biomechanical, 3D, watercolor, etc). It'd be cool to see more variety from artists who are obviously talented. Then again, who am I to tell an artist what to do? If you want something in their style (or just something transcribed, like what I got), they are a fantastic choice. Price was beyond reasonable - $120 before tip for both pieces. FYI: Cash only! There's a bank down the street of you forget. read more

My second time at the shop today, I went in the past to get tattood by Chuck D. His work is great and personality rules. He was really nice and fun. We had great convo and his work was amazing. The shop has a excellent lineup of talent including the owner, Hillary and Chuck D. All produce top notch work. However there are a couple of newer faces to the shop who all are talents, like Jason Ocha, Dan Nelson, and Franco Moldanado (who tattooed my lady and me today.) Franco is a really awesome guy and his work is amazing. He did a great piece on my girlfriends forearm and charged a really good price for the size and work of the tattoo. I had a great time talking with him about my work and tattoos in general. I decided since he was fast a finished her tattoo soon to get one of his flash originals on me since I loved the image. He fit me in perfectly, and I really appreciated it. All around great experience and I will surely return for more pieces from Franco and Chuck, as well as new appointments with Dan and Jason. Greenpoint Tattoo is totally solid. I had two tattoos done by Chuck D. For the first one, he told me it would take a couple hours and quoted me a certain price. However, the tattoo ended up taking longer than we expected. Since they have a $200 per hour rate, this tattoo would have cost way more than I anticipated. But Chuck being the rad dude he is, told me that he would only charge me what he quoted me. The next day he did another little tattoo on me. I'm happy with both of them. All the guys (and HIlary) do awesome stuff and have different styles from each other. Greenpoint is a great shop and everybody has a relaxed and respectful attitude. Everyone is friendly and willing to talk. In my humble opinion, going here is a much more chill and fun experience than going to some other shops in Brooklyn that do similar work. This place is amazing!!! I called a couple times prior to making an appointment for my first tattoo. Keith & Hillary were both kind to answer all my questions. I was super nervous because I didn't know what to expect, but as soon as I opened the door my fear disappeared. It's a very nice and clean shop with lots of light and the atmosphere is great. Chuck D. was incredible, he listened, asked questions and gave me some advice. I got a Bible verse reference inside my left wrist. It didn't hurt and it was pretty fast. I used to have this terrible tattoo on my upper arm that looked like something I got at burning man in the 90s. I had wanted to get it covered for years, but didn't really know what I could do that would both cover it and look good. John helped me out with suggestions on what type of things would work best and then came up with a design based on my feedback. Out of the blue I decided to get my first new tattoo in 15 years. A friend had recently been to Greenpoint Tattoo and highly recommended it as do I. I was able to get an appointment same day. Dan was great to work with. He gave me direction to narrow down the look and font for my script tattoo, and he was patient even while I wavered on the exact placement. Price was reasonable as well. I'd highly recommend the shop to both tattoo veterans and virgins. (Also, don't let the trip from Manhattan stop you... yes, it's two transfers, but total travel time is pretty short). read more

Got my first tattoo (sinister looking whale) from Chuck Donoghue on Friday the 13th at close to midnight. I think I was his last tattoo after a long ass day. He did an awesome job, it's now fully healed and looks great. Beyond that - Chuck's patience was amazing. I almost passed out towards the end of the tattoo and he saw it coming from a mile away, got me a soda, chilled me out, and then finished up. I never felt rushed or like a dick, although that effectively was what I was (it was close to midnight and he had been working all day). Had it been me in his position, I would not have had anywhere close to that level of patience and professionalism. My buddy got a tattoo from another one of the guys (unsure of name), and he was so happy he's going back for a bigger one soon (his 12th tat I believe, so he is a far better judge of quality than I). Overall, couldn't have been a better experience, for the noob or for my buddy who's gotten tattoos all over NYC. read more

My sister and I went into the shop to get a tattoo to raise funds for the Brooklyn food bank. We were tattooed by Chuck D. and keep going back. Chuck is extremely talented and the friendliest person I've ever met in New York. You can definitely trust Chuck to give you a tattoo better than you originally expected. This is probably the best shop I have been to and I will definitely return. I had a piece done this weekend by John Reardon, and it turned out better than I could have anticipated. From the minute I made the appointment/ paid the deposit a few weeks in advance, he was super helpful and able to help integrate my ideas and make changes. The space is comfortable, with good music on vinyl and great light. They aren't pushy, but will definitely give insight regarding good tattoo aesthetic. Chuck Donaghue has worked with me on the design and execution of a sleeve for my right arm and he's been the perfect tattoo artist for me. He's had great, helpful suggestions and turned my basic idea into a work of art that I'm proud to wear permanently. I think the relationship between the client and tattoo artist is a very particular one and I'm not saying this shop would be perfect for everyone but it's been perfect for me and I have a hard time understanding how anyone could really knock the skill, friendliness and professionalism of the people who work there. read more

I now have gotten seven tattoos from Chuck, and I'm just having him do my entire left sleeve. He gives you a free tattoo after 10 so even if he wasn't the nicest dude ever/amazing tattooer I'd still be copping tats from him. In addition to the aforementioned tattoos, I have also gotten a rad looking skull with a dagger and drops of blood, an incredible rendition of Pharoah's Horses in which Chuck made every horse slightly different from the other, a ridiculously clean lady head (a friend of mine told me she looks like she would be hot if she was a real person) and last but not least a panther/snake battle royale that is a HUGE cover up. The battle royale is a huge testament to Chuck's skill, I can't even tell you what a mess the tattoo that is now underneath it was. When I was young and ignorant to how tattoos worked I wanted a tattoo inspired by the Birthday Party song "Release the Bats." Nick Cave is my idol so I told the tattoer to do something like a cave with bats flying out of the cave and the words "Release the Bats" underneath it. The guy (a Tucson-based artist) basically just made a blob of black and drew bird outlines around it. I was too timid to say anything, what did I know, y'know? Terrible idea on my part, and terrible execution on the artist's part. Chuck was visibly flabbergasted with this task that I had given to him. I thought a panther might work, but he knew a panther wouldn't get all of it. He figured it out though, wrapping a snake around the panther and then finally adding some clouds to cover every last bit of that shit tattoo! What was a terrible looking and honestly embarrassing tattoo was covered up with what is now my favorite tattoo! I love all the tattoos I have gotten from Chuck, but I plan to get a tattoo from every artist at this shop once he finishes my sleeve. Just such a rad shop with such good people that I can't help but gush. They treat people with no clue about tattoos as well as they do people covered in amazing work, which is sometimes a rarity in this culture. High quality work with attention to customer service, other shops should take note! read more

I went to a guy named Matt. I love my tattoo but I wasn't even in the chair for more than a hour 50 minutes tops and he charged me $250. (Keep in mind my apt was for 1pm, I didn't get in the chair til 2pm because he decided to take a 30 min lunch break 20 mins sketching which is obviously fine). So with that being said I was hoping he would take a few dollars off.. $250 really?? I've gotten plenty of tattoos and this is by far my most expensive and not even my biggest. After I left I felt nothing but taken for granted because I was a female who showed up alone. I was very unhappy about the price but I didn't want to cause a scene. Long story short: customers should leave happy not disappointed & feel like they got taken advantage of. I'm a concierge at a hotel & ppl are always asking about my tattoos & and I always mention Greenpoint. I will never mention Greenpoint again. read more

I've been going to Greenpoint Tattoo since summer of last year (Hillary Fisher White, who has done a shit ton of my tattoos, moved there about then). It is an awesome space, bright and open, the antithesis of so many shops. John Reardon is a cool dude and an awesome tattooist, and the fact that I followed Hillary there speaks for itself. If you want to go to a shop that is cheerful and airy, with lots of cool old school flash on the walls, great tattooists and a super helpful staff, go to Greenpoint Tattoo. I really had high hopes for this place after all the great reviews. Now this bad review is based on my experience with one artist. The other artist at this shop are extremely professional and talented. I came in based on a recommendation from a co-worker who got a really nice piece on his leg. I came in because I wanted a polynesian half sleeve done. I was told Matt Bivetto was the artist I needed to see. I saw his work on Instagram and saw a polynesian piece he was working on. I spoke with him and he was certain he was going to be able to give me a great tattoo within my $1000 budget. I left a deposit and he traces my arm on a large sheet. I came in for my appointment on the date that I was given, Matt felt it was better to free style the whole thing. Now mind you my budget was $1000. Matt took three hours and charged me $600 to draw and outline the outside of my arm. I come back after it was healed and had a discussion with Matt based on the $600 I was charged I was hit with the it's $200 a hour, so I was charged $600 for Matt to draw and outline? So again we have to go over what was originally spoken. My budget is $1000 I am now in $1100 for a incomplete tattoo in which only the outside of the tattoo is shaded in. I can't argue with him cause all I'm getting is the run around. I spoke with someone at the shop and nothing can be done my discussion has to be with the Artist. I was completely taken a fool and ripped off. Save your money and don't waste your time with Matt. read more
