I shouldn't even give Steve Jacobson 1 star, he deserves no stars. He's a real crook. Last June, I went into Jacobson to purchase 2 bedroom lamps. Steve showed me one that he said is on the cover of a catalogue and that I could take it home to see what I think. I took the lamp home and we liked it but this lamp was defective. I brought the lamp back and asked Steve to order 2 new ones for me. We waited all summer and in August the lamps arrived. I went back to the store and asked if they could open the boxes but Steve said the lamps are fine and to take them home. At home, we took the lamps out of the boxes and they were damaged. I went back again with the lamps and Steve told me to hold them and he would order the lamps again and that I could use these 2 until the new ones arrived. Again and again we reordered the lamps and every time they came in there was something wrong with them. My husband and I went back to see Steve on a Saturday and told him that we weren't happy with the lamps. We were paying $300 a lamp and felt that they should be perfect. He said, "Tell me what you want to do". We decided to return the lamps. He said he couldn't credit our account that day but it would be taken care of on Monday. We called back on Monday and were told that we could only receive a credit of $600 to be used in house only good for one year. We were furious. He said in his raspy voice, "Whatever you want to do", but he's a liar. We were so nice to him. Always treated him nicely after waiting months for several fixtures and lamps. We put through a dispute with our credit card company and Steve wrote them to say that there's a 5 day return. He's so full of it with his defective merchandise. We have a new home and spent thousands of dollars with him on fixtures but he won't budge. We can only hope that no one patronizes his store. He's not deserving of it. We are going to inform the Better Business Bureau and tell every one we see about him. Why would we want to go back into his store after what he did to us. And, why would he want us to. Our plan is to take Steve Jacobson to small claims court in hopes of getting our money back. I have also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. All the reviews that I have read are negative about Steve. He's a poor businessman. But, I'm not giving up. I'm going to get my money back. read more

We had a wonderful experience here. As a millennial, I tend to shop online. But with lighting, it's so hard to get the idea of the size, quality, and overall look unless you see it in person. So I decided to venture into the store. I'm so glad we did. I was able to see the lights in person, so I could envision if it would fit our house. I like that you can turn on and off every light to get an idea of what it looks like when on. Also, a pet peeve of mine when in stores is that they don't have the pricing readily available. But at Jacobson's, each light has a price tag on it so you know exactly what to expect. We found some lights that we liked and Steve was happy to bring out a few catalogues in case we liked a different option instead. I found the store associates to be helpful and not pushy at all. In the end, we bought 2 sets of bathroom lights, a reading lamp, and a chandelier for our dining room. It definitely beats going through online pages day after day. I highly recommend stopping in. read more

OMG - I had the WORST experience ever there! Horrible customer service (if you could ever get a hold of anyone). I say that in parens because whenever I called to check on my order, they always said "oh your salesgirl isn't in today, call back on Thursday, she is the only one that can help you" After 3 weeks of that, I had enough. I finally talked to Jacobson himself and he was as rude as ever. he kept on changing his story and told me that I couldn't cancel a cusom order - It had already been 4 weeks since my order and it was supposed to be in within 7-10 days! what a joke! So then when i was persistent about getting my money back they charged me a restocking fee - so I ended up only getting like 20% back from what I originally paid. I will NEVER go there again, nor will I ever recommend it. read more

Don't go there! I thought that might be the most direct way to tell you about our horrible experience at Jacobson Electric in Wheeling. You will be told that your items will be delivered in 4-6 weeks. It will not happen. You will be told lies regarding why your item was not delivered in 4-6 weeks. These will be told to you by the OWNER of the establishment. Customer service is sorely lacking here. There are enough lighting stores in the vicinity that, seriously, you should not spend any of your money at this place. read more

I too do not get upset with businesses easily and I believe I've been more than patient with Jacobson Electric. May 2011 I ordered a replacement wall sconce glass cover and paid in full. The original cover cracked during construction (no fault of Jacobson Electric). When I purchased the replacement I was told it would take an estimated 6 weeks because the salesperson told me she checked with the manufacturer and the item is available. I have made multiple telephone calls since June 2011 and it is now October 5, 2011 and I still have no replacement glass cover. Originally I was told by the salesperson the manufacturer has it in stock. Each time I check on the item I speak with someone different and no one cares enough to determine how to solve this problem. I received a variety of excuses each time I called ranging from "it's on back order", "we received shipments of product but your item was not included", "please hold while I check with the manufacturer", "someone would have called you it it had come it", to "sorry today is Saturday and we can not check on deliveries call back on Monday." The most recent reason received 3 weeks ago was "we just learned your product is on it's way to us and we'll have it next week." That was 3 weeks ago. Today, October 5, 2011 I called again and made yet another attempt to speak to the owner. I was told by June (salesperson) he's not in the office. I informed her it is imperative to have him call me back and to rely the message that I intend to contact the Better Business Bureau. Believe it or not I was told by her that I may have to contact the BBB if he does not return my call. I questioned why would an owner not return a customer's call to make certain that the merchandise I paid for is delivered since it is now 5 months overdue and I've made repeated phone calls inquiring about the status only to receive multiple excuses. She responded with no logical explanation. Needless to say I still do not have my "paid in full" merchandise. I believe their service lacks good customer follow thru and followup not to mention no concern for customer circumstances. I see a repeat pattern whereby customers are constantly calling and getting the runaround after they've paid for merchandise. read more

I wish I had read the reviews before placing an order here. I was lied to from the time I placed the order with the store manager, until I finally cancelled the order after being lied to several times about the delivery date. I have no idea how they stay in business because they are a very dishonest organization. I would not buy a light bulb from them much less any lighting fixture. read more

I ordered a ceiling fan on 9/28/11. I was told it would be in 2 - 3 weeks. At around 4 weeks, I placed my first call. I was told someone would check on it and would call me back. I never heard back. I've subsequently placed about 4 more calls with same old bs responses and no ceiling fan. It is now January 7th and I'm waiting for them to open so I can cancel the order. If they won't I'll have my credit card company do it. Don't do business with these people. There's something going on financially there and I suspect they are taking full payment for lighting orders and then not placing the order until they have some cash flow. They will be out of business soon. read more

Lighting galleries in general tend to be a little flakey, I've found, but this one is at the bottom of the barrel. Yeah, the displays are beautiful, and the staff can be pleasant until they get your money. I ordered a couple of small items, total $65, that I could have bought on line. I'm kicking myself for not doing so. They told me 10 days, but I never heard from them. When I call someone promises to look into it, but then doesn't call back. The owner told me personally that I could count on them being in within two weeks, and it's now going on two months. Forget this place. read more

I like to patronize local businesses, but I will NEVER do business with this store again. I ordered a picture light in December 2011. It is now mid-March 2012 and I had to call the vendor directly to find out what the hold up was. Finally got the truth out of the store; they have to order so many items from the vender in order to make it worth their while (read=money) to get one special order item. That's taking care of your customer-NOT. Never again. Beware. read more

Have lived and worked in Buffalo Grove for 20 years. We always like to support the local businesses but have never been treated so poorly by a local business. The owner Steve Jacobson made delivery promises that should never have been made. The delivery periods excessive. You Can order the same lighting on line no delivery cost and receive your order in 3 days. The initial order took so excessively long by the time the contractor was done. At our house we had to pick new fixtures that we ordered on line to be installed. When. We went to return the fixtures he charged us 35 percent for restocking WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND DOING BUINES WITH THIS GUY. HE IS A LIAR AND A THIEF read more

I cannot give this company any stars. Ordered a simple fan over 2 months ago. Was not given any updates as to arrival. I had to call them and be told that some parts were no longer available, despite them being prominently displayed in a "current catalog". This happened twice. Their customer service is non-existent. Do yourself a favor and buy from ANYONE else! read more

Worse place ever to buy products. I ordered two pendant lights and two vanity lights and informed them that i needed the items by a specific date (August 3). They promised me they would have it by that date and wrote it on the receipt. That day comes around, and they don't have he vanity lights in or the extra light bulbs but somehow have the pendant lights in which were wrapped in a messy taped box and were now missing from the floor display. They also did not have the extra bulbs that "come from the same company." I expressed my anger because these fixtures were for my new construction condo and I had to have them turned into the contractor by a certain date for complimentary installation. They manager said they were ordered and were just running late and offered a free installation after closing in september as well as 10% refund. Ironically enough, they never asked for the address of installation. 2 weeks went by, and I had gotten an extension from my contractor to supply the vanity lights. However, they still did not have the lights because "they didn't need them till september.". That made no sense if they were already ordered and should have been in already. If they were installing it, they would have just held the product at the store. I expressed my frustrations and anger abou being given "floor stock" when I ordered new yet they still insisted they were new. In the end, I asked for a full refund. I would recommend that no one go to this store. They are unreliable, give false promises, and try very badly to cover up mistakes just so they can keep your money. There are so many better places to go and better service. Negative stars. Unworthy. read more

I wish there was a negative star!!!! Worst people to do business with EVER! Ordered new outlets for a kitchen remodel. Was told would be in in 2 weeks. 8 weeks later and guess what?? No product!!! The owner is beyond rude, unaccomodating , and a horrible business owner! Me and my husband both own businesses and I can say with complete certainty that if we EVER treated clients like this we would not be in business ! I called today to cancel my order and low and behold its being shipped and will be here Monday. Way to late! Have had to put off contractors in my home because of this poor excuse of a business!!! I have never wrote a review on here and never thought I would about a lighting store of all places, but this place pissed me off beyond what I can explain. How they have stayed in business for as long as they have truly baffles me!! SHOP ELSEWHERE!!!! read more

This has been a very bad buying experience. 3 missed delivery dates and Steve(the owner) was totally in denial. Never again will I buy from this store!! read more

I originally thought I liked this store. The staff was SO much more friendly and inviting than Idlewood. However, the customer service follow up leaves much to be desired. I received my fixture 2 months ago. A piece was broken. I called and the piece was supposedly ordered for me. A month goes by - no follow up so I call. Now they tell me the piece is coming from China and will take 3 more weeks. I as told it would be in the country by the first week and to the store by the following week. Here we are the end of the month and still no one has bothered to call. The lady I talked today couldn't find anything on my order and tells me I have to wait until Monday to talk to my sales person. Really? When I complained, she said I could call the manager tomorrow. Again, really? I am the irate customer and I have to waste my time calling. read more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE service, they shouldn't get any stars and shouldn't be in business. Did you ever have trouble getting a refund for a product you never received?? This is what could happen to you at Jacobson's. I ordered some expensive fixtures and salesman Steve said it would take a month, had to prepay in full (first mistake). I called after a month, was told it was take another two weeks. Waited 3 weeks, called again, was told "out of stock indefinitely." I asked why Jacobson's hadn't called the manufacturer when I ordered the fixtures and they took my money, why did it take 9 weeks to find out they couldn't deliver?! Steve's answer: they NEVER do it that way, they don't keep anything in stock and things "usually" arrive within a month. Steve tried to sell me something else, but NO WAY, I asked for a refund, and he said that he would issue a credit on my card, but I didn't insist on getting that in writing (second mistake). Waited two billing cycles (another 2 months, third mistake), and guess what ?? No credit. Called Jacobson's and spoke to "accounting," (NO MORE STEVE, he was useless) and was advised that they couldn't issue a credit since they had to try to locate my paperwork (which was, by this time, really old) to prove that I hadn't received the fixtures! What??? This is getting insane, but here's the worst part....when I asked to speak to an owner/manager, I was told that I had already been dealing with him....Steve is the owner and he's the one who never bothered to call on my order or even attempted to give me a refund. BOTTOM LINE: If you can't get any service from the owner of a store, you shouldn't shop there. I won't be back. read more

In my opinion, this store is awful. The salespeople are clueless (they are more like check-out cashiers) and the "customer service department" consists of one person who often is not there. They seem unable to follow up on an order, call their vendors, track a shipment, check a file, use a computer, and use the telephone. It is amazing they are still in business. I'd advise against buying anything from them, but if you insist, I'd make sure what you're buying is on their salesfloor and goes home with you that day, because you may never get anything you have to order. It has been almost ELEVEN weeks since I placed my order (paid, too) and they give me the run-around every time I call. Seems they don't have any idea where my order is or when it might reach their store. AND, they are not even apologetic. Wish I'd checked them out before buying, but who knew ordering a lamp could be such an ordeal. I simply cannot think of one positive thing to say. read more

STAY AWAY! Terrible, terrible customer service and months to get your merchandise. I cannot even give this company one star. I ordered lights mid summer, didn't receive lights until late fall, early winter. I received no phone calls regarding any back ordered items. I had to call them to inquire about the lights. One came scratched and I called and said I was just going to order directly from company and return light. They talked me out of it. That was 5 weeks ago and NO phone call. I called yesterday and they said they'd call back. Today I called them back and was told the company doesn't let them know when things are on back order...which WAS A LIE! I had already talked to the company that said they let their stores know in 24 hours if things are on back order and when I called him out on it he said "If I was going to nit pick how they did business it would get us no where". I canceled the reorder and said I would not order from them again and he told me that was "just fine' and when I said his customer service was terrible he thanked me. I ordered direct from the company got a discount for Jacobson's poor customer service AND will get the light in 3 days, no shipping cost or tax. DO NOT shop there. read more

Short summary - AVOID this company or if you must work with them pay the minimal downpayment with a credit card so you can dispute the charges with the assistance of the card issuer. I waited several months to post this VERY POOR review of Jacobsen's Electric Wheeling store, but feel as strongly today as i did months ago. We placed our order for 5 fixtures 2/2011. Kate, our salesperson, said we were wise to place the order well in advance of when the items were needed as it would take 6-8 weeks to receive our order. Kate was very helpful up until the time we placed our order., It all went downhill from there. In all fairness, we received 1 of the 5 items before 6 weeks had passed. We cancelled the remainder of the order after 11 weeks of waiting for the other items. During the 11 weeks, we placed multiple calls to Jacobsen and heard multiple excuses: "it hasn't been 6 weeks yet and we can't call to find out the status of your order, your order is shipping next week - heard that one a couple times and subsequently received a call saying the fixture was on back order until June, I assure you i will call you back", etc., etc. We worked with Kate, Ken, Mike and Steve - they all sound so nice on the phone and they all react to customers the same way with no return calls and fabricated stories. The saying is "birds of a feather flock together" - everyone in the store knows exactly how to bamboozle the customers. To follow up on the consistent excuses we heard, I called each of the manufacturers myself to find out if any of our items were on backorder and was told that each item was currently available. So it appears that what Jacobsen is doing that creates the enormous delay in delivering items is trying to save a few dollars on shipping expense. Lighting fixtures are shipped free by the manufacturer - if a full pallet is ordered. But just think, if you only order a single item, how long will you have to wait until other Jacobsen customers place orders for the same manufacturer so that the rest of the pallet fills up? A very long time. Ultimately, we ordered the same fixtures from Northwest Electrical supply and had all in our possession in less than 2 weeks! Jacobsen misled us, didn't respond truthfully to our inquiries and didn't deliver product. read more

If I could give ZERO stars, I would (as the others are saying on here as well). DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT give your money to this business!!! I am a business owner myself and never ever would I think of treating customers this way. Don't waste your time, there are plenty of lighting stores around. AVOID this store. We wish we would have read all these Yelp reviews before shopping at this store as everyone has had the same horrible experience. The owner Steve is totally dishonest. You pay upfront for everything and then they don't deliver and do not communicate. We spent thousands of dollars at this store and nothing by lies, wrong information, so much time wasted. I remember going into the store two times and walking in when someone was yelling at Steve (owner) who was being completely unreasonable and unprofessional. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED, TAKE YOUR BUSINESS TO OTHER LIGHTING STORES, DO NOT GO TO JACOBSON ELECTRIC. read more
