Love the fixture in our new kitchen. Was shopping for one at many places over the a few months and it was a fair price. Confirmed with Steve that it was LED & dimmable...perfect. But what wasn't told to us is that it only works with a few dimmers. And when I asked why it was flickering, I was told that the commercial grade, quality dimmer my electrican used was not compatible. But they have one for $39 plus. Yeah not happening. Should have been advised up front of its special requirements. So it cost me more. read more

Was surprised that most of the lighting we picked was taken right off display, only a couple items were in original box. Feel like there should be additional discounts for display items. It's not like we know how long it's been out collecting dust and using up bulb/LED life. Of the 9 ceiling lights we picked , three were in boxes, three were from display, and three were special ordered. Yes, the wait time for special orders is like two to three weeks. The selection here is unreal and the staff is very helpful. I've read some of the reviews here and I was dumbfounded. One reviewer hit the nail on the head: amazon. Everyone has grown accustomed to getting everything within 48 hours that they forget the value of brick and mortar. Sure, you can order a light online but you'll never see it or how it actually looks until you install it. Have fun taking it off and hanging a new light. Or, you can come into a place like Jacobsen Electric. You get to see an insane amounts of lights, fans, etc. You get advice and great service and a fair price. I've purchased many fixtures from Jacobson in the past. I ordered a new chandelier and two semi-flush mount fixtures in November. The flush mounts didn't arrive until May. The store was not at all proactive in communicating the delay to me. It took my calling month after to month to check in and see the status. My install was finally scheduled for last week and the chandelier was missing parts. I contacted the store and have yet to hear back on timing or how they will rectify the situation. While they have nice products, the customer service leaves much to be desired. This will be my last order with Jacobson. read more

They advertise 50% off, & the sales clerk kindly referred me to go to the website to find something I'd like. I have a whole house I'm remodeling too & I thought I'd just work w/the kind sales assoc. for everything because she seemed to be very knowledgeable. So I excitedly called to order that 1 thing I found, confirmed it was still a 50% off sale, gave all the info. But the price they wanted me to pay was only approx. $100 off on a $538 fixture. Below are the details surrounding my situation and overall "shopping" experience with Jacobson Electric Service, Inc. in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. 1/15/19 -- Staff and I discussed ideas, perused catalogs, and were enjoying the home improvement experience. I verbally stated my needs for flexibility to accommodate my ever changing plans ... it is a "work in progress." I was assured I would have no issues. I purchased two sconces and two chandeliers and took possession of the products that day. Once home, one of the fixtures was too small for the space intended and the sconces didn't look well in my room. 1/16/19 -- I returned to Jacobson and returned the sconces with no incident. They were accommodating and a refund was issued. 1/18/19 -- Further changes to my project were made, and the original fixtures no longer worked in my rooms. I wanted to return the two other "original fixtures," applying any balance towards a future in-store purchase. Another employee joined the discussions about adding "cans" in my home. This person assured me there would be no problem in making "changes" and nothing was mentioned about a 35% restocking plus freight costs policy. This information would have significantly impacted my decisions. In fact, I felt pressured to make a quick decision in ordering to receive an "industry discounted price." To Last, the salesperson asked me for an additional $400 because of a calculation error made on the invoice. My oversight and mistake was not reading the "fine print" on the invoice. 1/21/19 -- Jacobson salesperson called, asking for an additional $1000 deposit because her boss told her she didn't charge enough. This is clearly Jacobson's error, but I was accommodating. If I did not pay, sale could not completed. They were already in receipt of $1061.50 of my money and not in possession of any merchandise. This was a red flag, and I should have left the store. 1/22/19 -- 43 ceiling light cans, 2 chandeliers, and 8 pendents were ordered, and I was told it would take a couple of weeks to arrive (not 5 to 8 weeks as mentioned on the invoice). As of 2/12/19, I am still not in possession of 16 cans. I'm working with other contractors, and Jacobson's incompetency greatly impacted the completion schedule of my job. 2/7/19 -- To date, no further communication with Jacobson. I decided to personally go into the store. I needed to cancel the "cans" off my final order. That's when I was verbally told that I could not do that without a 35% restocking fee. I was speaking with the owner, and his arrogance was overwhelming. I asked him, again, to refund my money, but he had refused to do so. I left the establishment. 2/8/19 -- Jacobson's called me and more of the same "blame" game ensued. I offered a compromise, since I believe both parties have responsibility in this situation. I offered to split the restocking fee, but the offer was declined. He said he would talk to the owner and get back to me. A phone call never came. 2/10/19 -- Fed up and disgusted with every aspect of my experience with Jacobson, I went into the store one last time to get the cans I ordered. Only 24 of my 43 ceiling light cans were in the warehouse, but yet they are demanding that I incur the 35% restocking fee on the whole order. Furthermore, I wanted to cancel the complete order based on with Jacobson Electric. They flat out refused. 2/22/19 -- Called Jacobson Electric inquiring about the remains of "can" order. I was informed all was in their store. 2/23/19 -- Went into Jacobson Electric to pickup merchandise. Only 12 of the remaining 19 remaining cans were in the store. 2/26/19 -- To date, I still do not have my merchandise that I had "paid in full." I have no idea when or if I will receive what I fully paid for. 3/10/19 -- Received a letter from Jacobson stating that the rest of my order arrived and that they could not reach me by phone because my voicemail was full. I cannot recall my voicemail being full at that time. 4/2/19 -- I went and picked up the remainder of my merchandise, since Chase Bank informed me that I have no recourse because the merchandise was already picked up. This is true fact, but what is being overlooked, are all the obstacles Jacobson had created to make this transaction complicated and impossible to resolve. Summary: On January 22, 2019 43 ceiling light cans were ordered. On February 7, 2019, my remodeling plans changed and wanted to return the "cans." I was told that there was a 35% restocking fee. February 8, 2019 I agreed to pay the restocking fee and Jacobson continued to refuse the return. I disputed the transaction with Chase Bank and lost on the grounds I took possession of the merchandise. I am left with 43 ceiling light cans that I have no use for and have been blatantly violated as a consumer. Consider the facts and make your own judgement. They have all the lighting you could ever imagine. I went in they sell pictures bureaus and of course lighting and light bulbs. They answer your questions even though I told them I wasn't going to be buying today that I was just looking. They have huge chandeliers to little lights that you can hang from your ceiling to outside brackets to ceiling lights. The staff is really nice. The bathrooms are clean and cute. read more

I don't get mad at businesses easily, but I had a horrible experience with this one. What could have been a good transaction turned sour very quickly (or should I say VERY slowly, based on how long it took us to get our merchandise). The story: we bought two beautiful ceiling fans back in August 2009. They were defective so we brought them back. (Even their store electrician could not get them working.) They said they would replace them and call when they got them in. Two weeks pass and nothing. Three weeks pass and nothing. Four weeks pass. Finally, my mother in law made a last ditch attempt to see where they could be. Lo and behold, when we tell them we want to return the fans for a refund, they magically appear in the stock room! Why didn't they call us? (the lady there said they don't know when they get things in the stock room, stock room doesn't tell them....uh, does that make sense?) After that left a bad taste in our mouths, we wanted to return the items and be done with it. Jacobson, the owner, refused to give us a refund on merchandise we had not even opened and that we had just received one hour prior. Policy states that a full refund will be given only within 5 days of purchase. Jacobson's reasoning was that since we originally purchased our defective fans back in August (7 weeks prior!!), that policy did not apply to us. Wait wait wait, so we paid for the items (i don't say BOUGHT because BUYING something means you actually have the merchandise in hand) 7 weeks ago, but we received them TODAY and we can't return them? Question: how do you return something you do not even have yet? Crooks. This guy should not be in business at all. I wanted to like them. But their customer service, especially Jacobson, was terrible. No respect and very unwilling to help. Be very aware from buying from them, especially the return policy they do not uphold. So, you know the saying "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me." I can't tell you how appropriate that saying is for this particular scenario. While I can't say that I was fooled here twice, I did choose to ignore my fellow Yelpers despite my better judgement. So this all started with our living room ceiling fan needing to be replaced as the motor housing decided to separate itself from the base of the fan leaving itself only supported by the wiring which seemed like a rather dangerous situation to leave unaddressed. So we took it up on ourselves to replace the fan that day and made the trip over to Jacobson's to check out what they had in stock if anything. Otherwise we were just taking a trip to the local hardware store to buy something that day. So upon our arrival we spoke with Steve (later found out he was the owner after a quick Google search) and explained our situation. I had asked if he had one particular fan in stock that we had spotted online and he did indicate that was about 2 weeks out if we went that route. We CLEARLY stated that wouldn't work already so we would have to look at other options and asked what he had in stock but there were no options. Steve then suggested a fan that he said he could turn around by the end of the week (as background, we were there on a Tuesday). We really liked the fan and I really didn't want to go with a cheap option from the local hardware store so we decided that was okay provided it was there by the end of the week as he indicated. So Friday rolls around and I call in, Steve isn't available but I tell one of the associates that my order should be in and I just wanted to verify so I could pick it up. Whomever the associate asked when I ordered and after I tell him Tuesday that week he immediately tells me that it won't be in for another few weeks...Ok, I then asked him to double check and just make sure as Steve told me it would be to which he says he'll contact me back. I then get a call back from Steve who tells me that his associate wasn't familiar with our arrangement and that he had placed my order with another one that was already placed so it should be coming in, although it won't be until Monday as it wasn't coming in that Friday as previously discussed. I let it go as one business day wasn't a huge deal despite him already promising it would be there Friday. So, Monday rolls around. Talk to Steve. Not there. Should be Wednesday. Wednesday comes. No fan. Probably Friday. Fridays here. No fan. Getting angry. I ask Steve what's going on and he tells me that it's out of his hands but it should be there Monday now which is going on almost 2 weeks. Perhaps he shouldn't promise things he has no control over? Am I right? Right. In retrospect we should have just ordered the fan I originally wanted. So of course it's not there Monday and I explain to him that I could have bought this fan over the internet for basically the same cost, no tax and could have had it within 3 days. Considering this, is there anything that he can do for me? Steve said he'll look into it (despite him being the owner) and he'll contact me tomorrow with an update about the fan. No call. Not surprised at this point. I call in on Wednesday to see what's going on and he says he'll give me the tracking # for the fan which I find out through tracking, THAT IT JUST LEFT. WTF. So on Friday (which is now over 2 weeks) I see that it has been delivered and I call Steve just to double check and he tells me that it is indeed in stock and I can pick it up. Much to my surprise it's actually there when I arrive.?! Small win for me. So I'm forced to give one star which they earned because the employee carried the fan out to my car. Yeh. Lesson learned. And for any of you Yelpers that choose to ignore the ratings in the future. Shame on you. read more

Yes, they have great lights but if you still have not found what you want, they will help you look further on line. No other lighting store is so knowledgeable and provides service on such a high level. They also offer installation services as well. We felt this was the way to go with the 8 fixtures we bought. I will never do business with this company again and I will share the dreadful experience my spouse and I had with anyone who asks. I won't expect a call back, they said they would but did not. I won't believe what their sales person says, the receipt said something very different. I won't order from them because their policy is a refund within five days from sale PLUS 35% restocking fee. I won't believe what their management says about the manufacturer because the manufacture said it was Jacobson Electric (and I got the sense it was not the first time the manufacturer heard about them). I have called and received excuses and equivocation. I would not trust or rely upon anything they might tell me as being truthful and or accurate. WATCH OUT. I ordered a light from them just before the end of the year. They told me expect it in about 4 - 6 weeks due to the holidays, no problem. 4 - 6 weeks came and went. I started following up on 3/7/12, 3/22/12, 4/3/12. Needless to say NO light. Finally I went to the store & got full refund. I paid in full at time I ordered it (shame on me). The owner could have cared less. Customer service (which is not what they are) work part time so one day you speak to one person & then have to start all over with a different person if the first person is not working there next time you call (Don't they have computers to keep notes?). Thought I was done. May 2, 2012 I get email from CSR ((Loren & Deanna) from from Jacobson electric email thinking it was an apology, it wasn't. It was a SCAM email looking for money. They claimed to be on a trip in London, got robbed & lost everything. You can figure out where this is going. No wonder businesses in America are going under. Terrible and horrendous customer service. We ordered 3 lamps in late April. They were supposed to arrive by mid June. When they didn't arrive I started calling. It took 3 voicemails over 2 weeks for anyone to call me back. When they did call me back they said that 2 lamps arrived and they were waiting on the 3rd, which should be arriving soon. 2 weeks later, no lamps and no calls. I started calling again. It was by mid July that I finally talked to someone who told me the lamps were backordered until sept. When we went into the store to figure out the situation, they only offered 10% off the owner was rude, short and not in the least bit apologetic. Not once when I was in the store purchasing did the sales associate allude to the fact that ordering a standard product (this is not some "special" ceiling fan) could take 2 months or longer. I purchased two ceiling fans during Jacobson Electric's 50% off sale in November 2013, knowing that neither of them were currently in stock, and would each take around 4 weeks to arrive. Admittedly, the 4 weeks seemed to drag on, but they did call when they became available for pickup in the store, and a helpful store worker put them in my car for me. For those who are accustomed to the low prices and quick turnaround of Amazon & other online retailers, I can see why the long order times are frustrating, especially when, even with 50% off, the prices really aren't that different than the online prices (typically free delivery, zero tax). However, in our case, the store's 'time to delivery' estimate was fairly accurate, and the lady who served us was clearly very knowledgeable about the product offerings, and she did give us quite a bit of their time listening/discussing color/brand/size options--something that would have been rather more difficult to do with an online retailer (e.g. via a IM Chat link or phone line). So I give 3 stars based on our experience. I didn't like the long wait, but in our case, it was 'as stated' and in any case wasn't life-threatening, and of course we've helped support a local business too. On the other hand, if we had already been completely confident about our choice, and hadn't had any concerns about the possibility of returning either fan (whether before or after opening the box/installing), then I guess we could have gone through Amazon and saved a lot of time and the tax too. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I spent over $1500 ordering a custom fan in May that was supposed to be delivered by June. It is now October and I still have no fan. On my many phone calls, I was told told, rudely, that they would let me know when it came in. But they never had a tracking number, or realistic delivery time. The pricing was very competitive - believe me, I have purchased so many high-end lights online! It was so much better to see the fixtures in person. The staff was very helpful. Additionally, I loved the the selection - suited my taste -- modern and contemporary. Surprisingly, a great selection for a local retailer. I bought on special order three amazing pendants. HORRIBLE!!!! The owner or customer reps will not return a call. I had a problem with merchandise and they would not help. The rep actually told me the owner doesnt return calls so keep calling back to try to get him. I called atleast a dozen times and left messages and they ignored and just did not care. They are thieves and essentially just stole my money. Be aware of the reviews as they are 100% accurate. I would never buy anything from this store again....even if it was the last place on earth that sold light. Being in the dark is better that giving these crooks money. I had the opposite experience as the other reviewers. I went in one afternoon and with an associate's help was able to pick out 6 ceiling fans and 8 light fixtures, The associate ordered all of the correct accessories for my sloped/pitched ceilings, which made installation a breeze. They really know their stuff, and will tell you what fixtures to pick depending on how much light you need, and what type of room you are illuminating. If you have a problem waiting 3-4 weeks for a quality product, then make sure to ask what their lead times are. We got our products, and are extremely happy with the results. read more

Service is like a parachute. You only have one opportunity to know if it works. My wife and I had a fixture we bought from Jacobson Electric fail. I called, spoke with Steve, and sent an image of what happened. Steve asked to call me back. I got that call is less than 10 minutes and was told a new fixture had already been ordered and when it arrived Jacobson would send the fixture out with an installer to be swapped out. Stamp it handled. I can't think of a reason why I would want to go elsewhere for my next fixture purchase. Service and support does not get any better. read more

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STORE!!!!! BEWARE!!! I have had the most horrible experience with this store. About two months ago I was visiting friends in Chicago and ordered light fixtures from this store in the amount of $1117.00 to be shipped to me in Nevada. needless to say, if I am writing this review, I never received my order. I spoke to different employees (Kathy, Maryanne, Eleonore - not sure of correct spelling) over the last few weeks and they blatantly lied to me about my order. Each giving me a different estimated order arrival dates. Finally, I asked for a refund. Last call was today and I was told Steven has the paperwork on his desk and he may or may not give me the refund. What does that even mean? How do they run their business? Of course, he was not available to speak to me. I filed a complaint, and I will get my money back (hopefully!) but what are they thinking??? that they can just take a thousand dollars from somebody and get away with it???? Also, looking at other reviews here, I am not the only person they've done this to. It really is a shame, because the store has nice merchandise, but what good is it if they take your money and never deliver. Poor Customer Service. No Follow Up. You can see where this review is going. Crash & Burn. I placed a custom order & was told that the light fixture would be 2-4 weeks. When 2 weeks hit, I called to check & the customer service person told me that all custom orders take at least 4-6 weeks. She would NOT place a call to check on the order. I was told that the mfg - supplier does not even like to take calls to check on orders less that 1 month old -- WHAT!!?? Are you serious?? I waited another 2 weeks & placed another call. They were not going to check again & started into the same song & dance when I told them to just cancel the order - I did not want to deal with this lack of service & would much rather place my order (spend my money) elsewhere. Low & behold I can a call back within a couple hours & they had an answer - the light fixture was going to be shipped in a couple days. I waited another 2 weeks & placed another call to find out the light fixture was in. Hind sight is 20/20 & for what it's worth - spend your money elsewhere. It's a shame that this place stays open if so many people have bad experiences. If I could have given them ZERO stars I would have. I made a HUGE mistake when I decided to use Jacobson to order a light fixture for our remodeled kitchen. My experience is exactly like the others related in the reviews on this site. Sales person suggested a three to four week delivery time. Did not happen. After six weeks of misinformation, unreliable dates, blame shifting and so on-from store staff-checked with manufacturer and learned this item was readily available. Given this info, owner (Steve) gave assurance fixture would be delivered on a particular date. Arrived at store to pick up fixture-and was told by staff that it had not even been shipped to store. We demanded a refund on the spot, immediately ordered the fixture from another vendor-and it was hanging in our kitchen in less than a week. read more

If I could give a zero star I would!!! Bought the lighting fixtures and fans for entire new property but it didn't go through. Few fixtures were installed and I paid the store to remove them and paying dearly. I asked Steve if I could get refund for items that I bought but never really have them he said no. I am wondering if anyone have any ideas why that is. I paid a lot of money for these lights that I never even saw except a few that was installed. Avoid Jacobson Electric at all cost. I've never experienced a company so dishonest, disingenuous, unethical, and so blatant about it. Certainly customer service and satisfaction are not part of their business model. I wish I had checked-out the on-line reviews about their business before making a purchase. After waiting numerous months for our order we finally had enough of their excuses and canceled. Of course most businesses would handle this with concern and care. Not Jacobson, they didn't even have the courtesy to process the credit back to our credit card account. And yes, the credit card company had to get involved. Great way to run a customer driven business huh! I wouldn't purchase a light bulb from this company! I'm sure most people are skeptical about on-line reviews and take them with a grain of salt. After this experience I'll be doing more research before any significant purchase. I had a terrible experience at Jacobson's and would NOT recommend this store to anybody. I recently remodeled my bath and purchased a light from Jacobson's in early Aug. We were told it would be in 5-8 days, it is now Oct 22 and the light still did not arrive. I called many times only to be given the run around and that Steve (the owner) would call me back to explain. Not only did he never call, the light never was even ordered. I asked for a refund and Steve was too busy to process my request. I actually had to drive to his store and get my refund in person, He is a terrible businessman and deserves to be put out of business. When I came in he did not even apologize or acknowledge the fact I had called @ 6 times and asked to speak to him. I respect small business, however, this is one that does not deserve your money. In July we bought a fan from Jacobson Electric because my wife and I had bought light fixtures and fans from them in 2005/06. Then two weeks later we bought another fan for my daughters room...it worked perfectly. The first fan is a completely different story. I had my contractor install the fan and it make more noise than the fan we were replacing. Steve the owner said to bring it back, so after paying $150 to my contractor to have it installed, I then had it removed and they said to only bring in the motor not the blades. After 3 weeks we still did not have the fan back, so call again and finally the fan was returned. Had my contractor re-install it and $150 later fan still made the same noises - I don't think they did anything to it. So I called and talked to a nice lady on the phone. She said bring it back and we'll give you a refund. Brought it back and since no one was there to approve the refund, they said they call the following week. Of course the following comes and the refund is nowhere to be seen, instead they offered a store credit. So I now call Chase and dispute the charge. Chase calls Jacobson Electric who is now claiming we damaged the fan and won't give us a refund, contesting the chargeback, and won't give a store credit. These people are thieves. Still waiting on Chase, but since we've been out of a fan for almost 6 months, went to another fan store and bought a fan. So the new fan has cost us close to $1,200 for a $600 fan. I am usually pretty tolerant of stores, however, Steve and company are liars, cheats and thieves. I would still settle for a store credit or a refund to my credit card, but, stay far away as possible from these crooks. OMG! I ignored the other reviews on here! Boy am I pissed I did! Who would even think to check reviews on a lighting store?! I only came across them looking for the address. Can Yelp create negative stars, please? I ordered ONE vanity light. I was told 3-4 weeks. This was December 8th. 3 weeks in I called to check if it was in....like everyone else I was told I was going to get a call back. NO! Over the course of the next few months I probably called 10-15 times. Maybe twice I received a phone call back with some full of crap story about where my light was and when I'd get it. I've been using my bathroom without a freaking light since January (it's now April 1). I figured I'd move all of my shower/bathroom stuff in b/c I was told "any day now" since January and I'd spend $10,000 on my bathroom I WANTED TO USE IT! Jacobson told me the light was back-ordered. BS. Since February Jacobson told me specific dates it was supposed to be shipped. I'd call to check...NOPE! "Now it's going to ship on Monday". "Now it's going to ship NEXT Monday". Recently, my mom called the manufacturer and they said it was never back-ordered, they had plenty. Again...like the other complainers on here...MAGICALLY once we said to refund it's all of a sudden in! Go figure. I'm getting it tomorrow....PLEASE be in and not broken!! I can't even imagine why these people feel the need to lie like that. What is the point?! I don't understand! The only other lighting store I've ever ordered from was Century in Libertyville. No issues there. It would have been like $10 more for the light from them...would have been worth it! Worst supplier ever. Tells you two weeks for order to arrive. If you call for follow up they say they will check and call back but never do. After four months and nuerous calls I demanded a cash refund, telling them I had found what I was looking for elsewhere. Suddenly and miraclously the fixture arrived and I was told on Monday I would only receive store credit no refund as promised the Friday before. If you have a ton of time to waste order from them. That way Steve can lie to you as well never changing the stupid expression on his face. read more

I was a little hesitant about the negative reviews but decided to check them out when shopping for a foyer chandelier after seeing an ad for their 50% off sale. Upon entering the store, I was promptly greeted and asked what I was looking for. The sales lady was very patient with me as she showed me various fixtures and heard my feedback. After listening to me and learning my style, she pulled out a book and found the perfect fixture. It came within 4-6 weeks and I love it. I've been purchasing lights, fans, etc. From this company for fifteen years and am totally satisfied with them. Although I have found that the wait for some of their. Items was a little long over the years, I realize that the manufacturer is at fault in those cases. I'm sorry for those who had bad experiences, but I just bought a crystal ceiling fixture. The sales person, Jill, was wonderful and spent a lot of time with me to make the right choice. Once I got home, I had second thoughts. I called and spoke with Steve, who told me to come in the next day. I went back and ordered a different fixture. The fixture arrived in a short time, which they have no control over, by the way. Neil did the installation. He was awesome! I had also purchased a ceiling fan via the web and he also assembled and installed the ceiling fan. I had a great experience and will do business with them again. read more

We purchased many different light fixtures, we replaced two outdoor lights with new motion sensitive fixtures, we replaced a bathroom fan and added a couple new can lights in a bedroom. Steve could not have been more helpful with the selection of the new fixtures and then Neal came out to our house to assist in making other decisions on how we could make improvements in several different areas both inside and outside our house. Once all the items were ordered and received Neal came out and installed everything. He was VERY professional VERY clean and did an excellent job. In one particular situation he ran into a few challenges and he did an excellent job of finding great solutions. I would highly recommend using Jacobson for your purchase and installation. I would suggest that you have Neal come out to your home. It was well worth it. His suggestions were very helpful and dead on. read more
