The pesto chicken and flatbread were amazing!

Arturo our server provided excellent customer service. The food was hot and tasty. Arturo took the time to explain the daily specials and offered us many different options. I would definitely come back and eat at Jacks again. Thank you for the great experience.

5 star Catalina score, 3.76 Mainland score. Expectation management is key here, they knock it out of the park on some things and falter on others. Service is very great, pacing was a miss, and food was overall pretty good Lasagna: 9.8/10, better than most of the upscale restaurants I've been to! Bruschetta: 5/10 Minestrone soup: 5/10

More amazing experiences! So happy Jacks Trattoria is here and thriving. The food is phenomenal and the service is consistently excellent. We love the ambiance of the ocean nearby and gentle Italian music playing in the background. Feels like Tuscany!

Would rate this a 4.5 but we'll bring it up to a 5. Found this place through Yelp. The inside is very nice and cozy with warm lighting and Italian instrumental music. The interior is clean and comfortable. The service was quite nice as well, as the server made sure our food was good and even answered some of our questions about the island. The food itself was actually really nice. The best thing was the steamed mussels that wasn't overly salty and had a nice sauce to it. The portofino linguine also had a really nice creamy sauce. The spicy penne however was not very good as it kinda tasted like store bought sauce with some chili flakes. The other disappointing thing was that they didn't have water but only bottled water for like $2.50..? The bread was heated up very nicely though. The filet mignon was also not bad. If you're looking for some decently priced and good tasting Italian food during your time on Catalina island, come here!

We know Jacks from breakfast - so amazing!!! Tonight we went there for dinner (Jacks Trattoria) and were amazed that it wasn't crowded. We started with the fried mozzarella as an appetizer. DELICIOUS! Not your average fried mozzarella at all. I chose an appetizer as my main meal - steamed clams.class. Brian ordered his favorite - chicken parm.

Lasagna and spicy pasta.

Caesar salad was not bad but I think I would skip next time. The restaurant has a really nice romantic atmosphere, so it's perfect for a date night, dinner with your loved ones, or a special occasion. It's also right by the main street with all the bars, so we walked around and grabbed drinks afterward. Service was amazing and the drinks were also great. I sat both inside and outside, and would recommend sitting outside if you want to enjoy the ocean more. Luckily they have heaters so it doesn't get too cold at night. Definitely recommend making a reservation since it can get busy. Would happily come back again!

We tried the French onion soup, but unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to eat more than one spoonful and ended up leaving almost all of it. The pasta was also a bit overcooked and tasted pretty ordinary--nothing particularly special or memorable. If you're visiting the island, I'd recommend this place for the atmosphere and ambiance. But if you're hungry and looking for really good food, I personally wouldn't recommend it. That being said, our server was very nice and attentive. In fact, it was probably the best service we experienced during our time on the island.

Drinks: Dirty Martini 2/5 Food: - LEMON GRASS CHICKEN CRUNCH SALAD 4/5: This salad was incredible. The dressing was so flavorful. My only complaint is that it was drenched in dressing so a bit too salty and soggy. I would just ask for the dressing on the side next time. - PRIME RIB 4/5: We chose a baked potato and brussel sprouts as our two sides. The baked potato was on the drier side, and the brussels were small. The prime rib itself was good. Meaty cut and pretty tender. I wish the horseradish had more of a bite though. - FRESH CATCH OF THE DAY 3.5/5: I opted for the fresh catch booked with a lemon and garlic sauce alongside rice pilaf and asparagus. Flavors were great but it was slightly overcooked so a bit on the dry side.

One of my favorite meals on the trip to Catalina was the Caesar salad. I had here with the added shrimp. The shrimp is delicious and pea so well with the salad. I honestly have craved this salad once or twice already since leaving. Also had a great pesto type pasta, and a special shout out to their scallop potato that came with the lamb chop. Overall, food came out quickly, and the staff was very friendly - recommend for a casual dinner when you are on the island. Note that they only do bottled water.

I dined here 10 years ago during my last visit to Avalon and it happened to be recommended to me…read morethat it was still a popular place to eat so I returned for dinner last night. The location is one block from the waterfront and features one large room with a full bar, dining room and then a bar with stools next to the open kitchen all with a nautical theme to it. The restaurant has a vibrant feeling to it. I ordered a cup of the clam chowder ($8) and upon the recommendation of the waitress pucker the seafood pasta ($32) for the entree. The chowder arrived about 5 minutes later and was perfect. Delicious, rich, creamy and flavorful, it was as good as any that I have had (5). The entree arrived about 15 minutes after ordering and had shrimp, scallops, clams and fish on spaghetti in a marinara sauce. Quantity wise it was plenty. Taste wise left me wanting a little more. First, I don't like fish in this dish and should have asked it not be included. My fault. I prefer just the shrimp, scallops, clams, etc. Also the marinara was ok in taste but not my favorite. I gave the entree a 3. I would have preferred it with the also available garlic butter and olive oil sauce instead. Service was very good. I am going to give a 4 score here because I think that my entree dislike was more of an anomaly than normal. I would be happy to return.

We sat where the hostess suggested we wait, but were forgotten until we approached again. These things happen! We went straight into mains. I ordered the filet Mignon, I loved it! It came with hollandaise which I wasn't in the mood for, so ordered the side of ride wine jus, they wouldn't allow me to switch it out. It definitely was more of a glaze in thickness, but still super tasty. Only thing missing was a hard sear on the steak, it didn't have that lovely salty crust. My husband got the lamb rack, loved it! Only questionable thing was the mint jelly it came with. Definitely tasted and had a texture of jello rather than regular mint jelly, but put that to the side. Our server was so friendly, and it was amazing that they gave attentive service while also breaking down the chairs and tables for the night - quite a feat!

For food, we ordered the duck cigars and artichoke fritters to share, and then the sea bass (special of the day) with broccolini to share. The duck cigars seemed a little out of place on the menu but were very good; I'm a big fan of duck and liked the crunch and teriyaki-like sauce on top. The artichoke fritters were OK but not my favorite, as I felt they just lacked flavor or much texture. The sea bass and sauce had a great flavor but was a little mushy. My mom enjoyed her cosmopolitan and I thought my mai tai was fine, but had tasted like they just used cheap pineapple juice as the base. Our waiter was friendly and service was quick, but I felt we were getting pushed out a bit toward the end--two people back to back tried to take my plate as I was still munching, our waiter put the dessert menu down on the table pretty blatantly and then finally he brought the check. We weren't there for an excessively long time but it was busy as we were leaving so I understand the need to get people through for the night. I'd definitely come back for the ambiance! This wasn't my favorite food spot but I thought it was on par for the price point.

Once we were finally seated, another 15 minutes passed without a server acknowledging us. We asked a busser for water, and he said he would get our waiter. We watched him speak to a male waiter, who looked directly at our table but returned to chatting with the bartender. Four other nearby tables that had been seated after us were also left without service. When the waiter eventually headed in our direction, he walked past all of the waiting tables and stopped to talk with guests who had already been served. After sitting for 35 minutes without even receiving water or being greeted by a server, we left. The couple at the table next to us left as well. It truly felt as though the waiting tables were being deliberately ignored. There are many wonderful places to eat on Catalina Island, but based on this experience, I would avoid Topside.

We were a large party of 14 adults and 2 children. Before entering, we specifically asked if children were allowed inside and were told they were, as long as they stayed seated at a table and did not sit at the bar. Based on that, we decided to come in. Some of our group had already ordered drinks at the bar, and we were given two tables.. Unfortunately, there was some kind of miscommunication with one of the servers. He apparently understood that part of our group was only going to sit at the table and not order anything. In reality, our entire group was there to order drinks; we simply weren't all ordering at the exact same time.. Instead of clarifying the misunderstanding, the server became extremely rude and kicked members of our party out while the rest of us were already ordering drinks. The way the situation was handled was completely unnecessary and unprofessional... It escalated so quickly that nobody wanted to argue or make a bigger scene, so the people who had not yet ordered simply left.. What makes this even more frustrating is that this was a large group of adults who were planning to drink.. With 14 adults and only two children, the restaurant easily lost hundreds of dollars in potential drink sales because of how the situation was handled... To be fair, the bartenders who helped us with our first round were actually nice and friendly.. Unfortunately, the interaction with the server completely ruined the experience for us. The drinks themselves also weren't anything particularly special... We probably should have asked to speak with a manager at the time, but everything happened so quickly that we just decided it wasn't worth the hassle.. We came in excited to check out a place we'd heard so much about, but unfortunately left extremely disappointed. Based on this experience, we won't be returning...
