I know nothing about home repair and maintenance. Not a damn thing. That didn't stop me from buying a house. And houses need work. There are some projects that are larger, which require professionals. But dammit, some things I should be able to do myself, even if I lack the knowledge or the tools. But going to the big box home stores fills me with a sense of dread. They are overwhelmingly large, it's hard to find anyone who can help you, and the whole experience leaves me drained, dizzy, and nauseated. So I had what I considered a fairly clever idea. Why don't I just call the small, local, neighborhood hardware store, and see if they can help me solve my minor home repair and maintenance challenges? I'll confess that I called another store first before reaching out to Jack's. But it was at Jack's where I found the help, patience, and expertise that I so desperately needed! Project number one was removing the gunk from between brick pavers on my patio, filling them with silicone sand, and other spring yard maintenance. I had no tools beyond the phone in my hand. But Dan, on the other end of the line, walked me through the tools and equipment I would need. He told me the prices, took my order and payment over the phone, and had everything ready for a semi-contactless pick up! That went so well, I returned for project number two, replacing the window well covers that had cracked. Now I am the proud owner of my very first ratchet set! At least, I think that's what it was called. I thought I was going to need some power tool to do the job, and was prepared to drop a lot of money, but I walked out with a bill of about $30... and a Twinkie. Don't judge. It was for my daughter. Needless to say, I have no intention of ever setting foot again in one of those big box home stores. I have Jack's, and it's fantastic! read more

I can't say enough good things about Jack's Hardware. I live nearby and come in occasionally for items needed to do work around the house. Most recently, I need a small screw to fix an attachment to a battery pack - they helped me immediately, found the item I needed and sent me on my way. The store has been there forever and is a part of the community. Plus, the messages on their 'old school' on Packard are informative and (sometimes) clever! read more

If you want to have a conversation about your project, get tips from the extremely knowledgeable staff, and deal with a local business that is right around the corner, this is your spot. I was replacing a tub faucet today and the owner let me borrow his own pipe cutter. He just let me take the tool home instead of trying to get me to buy one at his store! Jack's Hardware is a blessing in a traffic-choked city like Ann Arbor. If it weren't for this tiny shop, people would have to drive all the way out to the west side to go to Stadium Hardware, or all the way out to the Eastern Limits (where traffic is worse) for the Ace Barnes hardware store. I did one plumbing repair that took less than 30 minutes and that included the time to drive to Jack's and back, to pick up a washer. Most people are surprised at the large selection, because Jack's looks so small from the outside. They have everything a hardware store ought to have. I've gotten grass seed and a spreader, plumbing parts, a new doorknob, paint, paint brushes and rollers, rakes and shovels, pliers and wrenches, porch lamps and light globes, nuts, bolts and screws, a hose for the washing machine, and cleaning supplies. If you need something a little more unusual, you might have to drive farther. Jacks doesn't have as much equipment to rent as Carpenter Brothers Hardware, in the Plymouth Road Mall--they have everything from generators to chain saws to floor sanders. At Jacks, I've never found a good selection of mulch, concrete or anything else that has to be stored outdoors because of the lack of space. I tend to go to Lowe's or Home Depot for those. If you have some kind of a house-related problem, there's a good chance that you can walk into Jacks and get what you need to fix it. The staff is knowledgeable enough that they can often help you find the right tool or give some suggestions about how to do the job. And you won't have to drive halfway to Ypsilanti. read more

Yes the store may have a limited selection due to it's size (it's actually bigger and has much more than you think), but the staff will go out of it's way to help you and make sure you receive a fair deal. They also have funny signs. I went there today to get new propane tanks for our grill. One of the tanks we brought in was full, but had a broken nozzle that prevented us from opening it. We don't remember specifically where we bought the tank in the first place. Jack's made us this deal. They let us exchange the tank with a new one for free with one condition. Jack's would attempt to have the provider replace the tank. If the provider refused, then they would call us and we would work out a fair solution between ourselves. That's certainly more than we expected to get and certainly wouldn't get from other stores. The staff then went on and helped us pick out the correct line for our weed wacker and showed me how to install it. I'm sad to write this review. I agree with the reviewers that says that Jack's is always well stocked with a wide variety of products. I've shopped there frequently, over the years. But today I went in for some potting soil and as I was at the counter, the fellow was about to pick up the phone and PULLED HIS MASK ALL THE WAY DOWN BELOW HIS MOUTH, as he said that the person calling was someone selling him a 9mm. Nice. I immediately said, "Woah! Your mask, friend!" He ignored me and I walked out without making the purchase. Nevermind that the nature of that clearly non-work call was inappropriate, we are almost a year into this pandemic and pulling one's mask down like that, especially within 2 feet of a customer, while you are talking is unacceptable. Sadly, I won't be returning to Jack's until the pandemic is over. read more

I've been visiting Jack's to get hardware & sundry garden items for 3 years. In a city that's increasingly dominated by big-box stores far out of walking distance, the proximity of Jack's to the city center is a breath of fresh air and a nod to the past. My rating also speaks to the quality of service there - I purchased a bolt for my bicycle as well as a red rear flasher several weeks ago. The employee behind the desk not only provided me with a socket set to use for tightening in front of the store, but also a fresh set of industrial-grade alkaline batteries for the flasher. These guys are great. They are a mom and pop hardware store. Located central to the campus I imagine most students use them for keys and small household repair items. I also notice local contractors using them. The pluses: They are incredibly helpful, willing to offer assistance or just let you wander through the shop. They always offer to help. Being a small shop they are stocked to the ceiling! They all seem to know their way around the shop from the guys who have been there forever to the younger looking guys/gals. Because it is small I often call to make sure something I'm looking for is in stock. They have even had it waiting on the counter top for me if I say I'm heading straight over. I can always ask for advice on how to use an item or how to best fix a problem. My favorite part is they operate like a local shop. I've walked in to exchange something and if it's just off by a few cents they never need to go through the hassle of refund and repurchase. I also love that they are open 8 to 8. Perhaps the minus for some would be selection size. That being said they can order anything and for the average daily need these guys are going to have it. Use them! read more

I recently bought a vintage lamp that needed to be rewired. I had never done this before, so I brought the lamp with me to Jack's and asked them how to do it safely. They kindly showed me the tools I'd need and then walked me through the process. The whole process took me about 10 minutes and I now have a beautiful and safely rewired lamp! I also used to come here when I was an industrial design student at U of M. They were always super helpful with suggestions and in getting me cheap tools. read more

Best hardware store in town. They often have rock salt and ice melt when everyone else runs out. They don't even ask if you want your heavy purchases carried to your car, they just automatically come out and haul your stuff into your trunk. When I almost bought something way more expensive than I needed, they talked to be about the issue and recommended a way cheaper but equally good solution. This week, I got stuck in their driveway because the weather was awful, and before I could even get out of my car and ask for help, they came out to push my car. The store is entirely too messy, although the staff seems to know where everything is, or at least where it might be, "if we have it." The store is more expensive than Amazon, but the prices are well worth it because I've often walked out of here with tools that make my life much easier, and I would not have discovered those items had I gone bargain hunting with no help. This is a great local business with just about anything you might need as an average residential customer - I've used Jack's for paint, light bulbs and wiring, window treatments in the winter and for nails, screws, etc. The people are friendly and helpful and the selection, like Clarence said, is much larger than it appears from the outside.
