In the last 3 years I've been coming here since returning to Ann Arbot, I have greatly appreciated the amazing selection of items and excellent customer service. The staff has been very helpful helping me sort out best solution to a number of issues as I had an older home. They almost always have what I need, saving me a trip to a big box store. I am constantly finding a new home project to work on and run into more complications than some folks may as my husband and I have an old home 1950 which of course comes with lots of fun unique sizing of everything and strange setups. I have found the product selection, the staff and their knowledge (each person may have a speciality over another of course but not everyone can possibly be an expert in all things) and if they are not sure they will always find someone who does know how to help me. I have found this store to be refreshing particularly as a woman as I am oftentimes given the label of "she doesn't know what she's doing". I am actually very handy and impress my male friends more than they'd like to admit. I've been handy since I was a little kid fixing things before my dad got home from work so my mom wouldn't have to deal with holding the flashlight over him for 7+ hours trying to fix something he knew nothing about. I am treated with respect and their employees are not only friendly and proactive without being annoying they assume I do know what I'm asking for even if I may not, I applaud their team and leadership as it creates an environment that I feel excited to be in and confident I will be helped by someone who is capable of helping or honest enough to say they are not an expert in that area but will find someone who is and do some research of their own and listen in so they can learn too! I was floored by this particularly last time I visited the store. Thank you for providing a great experience and knowledge to help me figure out what I need and next steps to tackle my many many home projects. I always find the coolest gifts in here too, there are so many hidden gems. I prefer this store to any other "big box" hardware store. This location has an incredible cast of characters (and I mean that in the best way). The one on stadium is a little larger and has a kitchen section but this location has knowledgeable, friendly staff and a variety of useful, quality items. You cannot but the kind of hometown, old-school service they have here. For those of you yelpers complaining about the teenage girl, I don't know who she is or if she still works there but shame on you for expecting a youngster to have a well rounded, seasoned approach to diy or customer service. Give her a break- or go to Home Depot and have one of those middle-aged, painted up, "token" women help you. read more

Very clean, very well stocked, staff always quick to help. A little congested--with a lot of stock in a small space, the place is bound to become cramped, and it can be hard to find things in the tight aisles. Still, it's rare to not find what I'm looking for there, and an employee can point me to it quickly if I can't. Love their selection of grilling gear and garden items. Prices run a bit higher than at most similar stores, but not so much so that its worth driving farther if you find yourself in the neighborhood. Signing up for an Ace card will get you some good discounts. Barnes' Ace fills the niche a good local hardware store should. read more

I came into the store in the last hour they were open, looking to match a paint from 3 years ago that Benjamin Moore doesn't even make anymore. They were so nice and helpful, and mixed me a new paint to match, and gave me good advice on primer. I was painting a new room as well as doing to repairs to a previously painted room. I tested the paint on the repairs, but doubted it would be a perfect match and assumed I'd have to repaint the whole wall, but it matched so well that the next day I couldn't tell exactly where I'd painted over. read more

How can the same management run two hardware stores so differently? The other one is well stocked, not bad on service (not great but not bad) and fun to shop in. This one is the opposite. Example: bought a defective item; had to stand in 3 long lines to return it and get a refund! Note: my first review mixed up the two stores. This place has been around for longer than I can say... I went there to buy some stuff and also got some key's made... paid and out the door... well, the keys did not work (it was the mailbox keys)... then since I didn't have my receipt, I couldn't return it... I double checked the keys and it wasn't matched up... so on my way back from somewhere else, I stopped by again and got new keys made up... again, it didn't work... so I gave up 1) going back and 2) trying to make copies of the key! read more

I love this hardware store. They are so helpful and knowledgeable. I love great customer service and I feel I always get top notch service when I go here. After a very unpleasant experience at a Sherwin Williams store I went in to the paint department here, Benjamin Moore, and found everything I needed right away and the employee matched the stain I needed on the first try. He had no objections to doing so either, imagine that (Sherwin Williams). I also had to find a hammock replacement and bought 2 other sizes at different stores, neither of which were the right one. Went in here and spoke to the worker who ordered me the right one from the other store and had it delivered within 2 days. Excellent customer service! read more

Excellent selection and helpful staff. This is one of my two go to hardware stores in Ann Arbor. The owner is frequently there and very knowledgeable and helpful. The rest of the staff are also eager to assist customers. There is a wide selection of hardware and home goods. They are now a Stihl dealer and also sell Toro and Craftsman products. read more

I can't say much about the customer service here, as I've hardly ever bothered interacting with them. That said, they're pretty unobtrusive if that's your thing (it is mine). The best feature about this place is, by far, the stuff they've got in there. I'm not sure I've ever gone in and not left with something I hadn't intended to purchase. There are a few rows of housewares in there that house a selection of items that is not only relevant and useful, but seemingly of good quality as well. I have by no means conducted an in-depth analysis of what they've got, but where most hardware stores might supplement their solid tools with cheap and skimpy housewares products, this Ace appears to have actually put some thought into what they purchase. They've got a good grasp on your better basics -- I bought a stainless steel pot there that was well-reviewed on Amazon and serves me to this day. Prices are decent, but even better with the coupons they send out every so often. But really: you think it'll just be an in-and-out trip, and then WHAM! "Well, I guess I could probably use a wire cutting-and-stripping tool. And it's on sale, after all." The bargain bin strikes again. read more

Everyone very nice. But don't buy a patio umbrella. I purchased (under $200)one a few weeks ago, the wind blew it over (once) and the metal broke in several pieces. They don't even have a 30'day warranty. Walk out the door and it's on you. My last umbrella (bought at English Gardens) lasted 10 years. read more

I went to this store to buy a Christmas gift. A 200 dollar Milwaukee tool. Website said with tool purchase you got a free battery. I get to store and they have tool and battery. However they will not honor the website. They tell me I have to order online and then I can pick-up at the store. If not so close to Christmas I would have walked. I played their game but have no intentions of going back unless I find elsewhere and then I will return since they apparently did not want to sell it to me in the first place. Very rude and unhelpful staff. To many more customer friendly places around Ann Arbor to deal with this. read more

DO NOT go here for paint. Came here for a Benjamin Moore color I needed badly for an accent wall. I was given service by a teenage girl who explained nothing to me about the difference between the basic to premium bases under BM, I asked for matte was given flat, and when I got home, this miscommunication gave me the worst coverage I have ever seen. So thin it streaked and left white everywhere. Called the store about all of this and they gave us a new batch mixed under a better base which was amazing to do but came back and same problem and now I have to go elsewhere for a different color to fix this mess. It can't be the color. Maybe it is the brand. Or maybe it is the store? At this point who knows but never again. read more

Convenient modest size hardware store. Prices pretty comparable to the big box places, but you can get in and out of ACE in much less time. They don't carry lumber and selection of big items like driveway sealer is limited, but for your basic hardware and garden supplies, it is a great alternative and will save you time. read more

I like this store and try to give it my business (instead of to Lowes/Home Depot where I have to track down someone to help me and pricing is about the same) as much as I can. They are always friendly and helpful and they remember their customers. True, the store isn't big and flashy like the one on Stadium with pretty dishware/glassware and home furnishings (although I did find an awesomely priced patio umbrella here), but it is a HARDWARE store. I can usually get what I need and get in and out quickly. If I need help with something, there is always someone that's knowledgeable that I can ask. read more

Super neighborhood hardware store! The staff make the place what it is: workable, controllable and informative. Just hang out, chat with other customers and staff about your project, in and out ease---not the HD/Lowe's mega box experience. If you're a Stadium Hardware fan, you'll easily come to appreciate this Ace on Washtenaw. read more

I went here twice for paint for my bedroom. The first visit I just got a sample and was helped by a teenage girl who was fine, neither rude nor super friendly. The second visit, I bought a couple gallons as well as a sample, and was helped by a middleish-aged woman who seemed to be a manager or owner. She was very kind and helpful, and even showed me paint rollers that were on sale for under $5 after I had grabbed a pack that was around $9. While waiting for the paint to mix, a teenage employee (off the clock) came up to the woman who was helping me to say she suddenly had to take time off work due to an injury. The manager/owner was very kind and understanding with the girl, and as someone who's worked in retail, I know not every boss is like that. Great service! And the cheap store-brand paint works fine for repainting a college bedroom. read more

I used to love going to this store. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable plus they always have just about everything I need. But I was in there a few weeks ago and witnessed this gentleman yelling at an employee. I was almost at the front of the store and could hear him clearly from the back. I later learned from the cashier that it was the owner yelling at someone. Talking to one of your employees like that is uncalled for and as much as I like the store I just can't condone treating your employees like that especially in front of customers. I love small hardwares, and this place is great. For me it is easy to get to, has what I need for most small projects, and is reasonably priced. On top of that the staff is quite helpful, and you can usually get in and out in just a few minutes. It reminds me of a small town hardware. read more

I have been going to this hardware store for more than ten years and it has been generally a good experience. Unfortunately the customer service is now terrible. I went to checkout and I placed my items on the counter. The cashier looks up at me and says "What?" That's right she said "What." I was a little shocked but I still smiled and said that I was all set. After ringing up the items she slaps the receipt down without looking at me. Now I'm not sure if I'll be going there. Or if I do see the young blck girl cashier I'll just leave. Sad to say it but Home Depot isn't that far away so I may tend to go there instead. read more

I buy hardware from this store every once and a while. They have good selection. I normally don't have much interaction with staff but usually it's been good. I have noticed that the cashier wasn't friendly. The prices at other stores are more competitve. Overall I'd say that I usually go elsewhere unless there's a specific need to go here. read more

I called the store to see if they carried a product. The young man who answered apparently went to check the shelf and came back to tell me they did. For some reason, I didn't feel sure about his response so I asked him if it was EcobugFree specifically. He assured me it was. When I went to the store, they didn't have the product. I wanted to email the manager suggesting the product and the manager seemed a bit resistant although helpful, telling me to go to the website and I should be able to find the owner's email. Couldn't find any email for the owner on the website. read more
