First time here. Had a bit of a wait. There were open tables, so I imagine they are encouraging some partaking at the bar. I can see why the place is popular. They are all about the steaks. My salad was fresh and I ate it all. Same with that monster filet. Perfectly cooked and flavorful seasoning, it really hit the spot. I'll definitely be back if I overnight in Redding again.

Still the Best Steak in the World - 40 Years Later at Jack's In 1988, fresh out of training and suited up for my very first day on the job, I found myself sweating through a worsted wool suit in Redding, California--on what turned out to be one of the hottest days on record at a sweltering 118 degrees. A young African American kid from the inner city of Flint, Michigan, I felt completely out of place. My boss gave me one piece of advice before I called it a night: "Promise me you'll grab a steak at Jack's." So I did. I walked into a packed Jack's Grill, and the first thing I saw behind the bar wasn't a wine list or a maître d'--it was bull riding on TV. Bull riding! I nearly turned right around. But a promise is a promise. The host told me the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour--a perfect excuse to retreat to the comfort of my hotel and order room service. But something made me stay. When my name was called, I discovered Jack's had a policy I'd never heard of before: if you were a party of one or two, they seated you with other solo diners to fill a table. Yet again, I almost bailed. But everyone had been surprisingly friendly, so I stuck it out. And thank God I did. That night I ordered the filet mignon--and it wasn't just good, it was life-changing. Perfectly cooked, seasoned with something magical, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It was hands down the best steak I'd ever had. That night marked the beginning of a love affair. For over a decade, every time work took me to Redding, Jack's was my non-negotiable dinner stop. And when I no longer traveled there for work? I'd still occasionally make the 2-hour drive from Sacramento just for that steak. Over the years, I've had the privilege of dining at some of the most renowned steakhouses in the world: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Hong Kong, Tokyo (even Kobe), Montreal, Vancouver, Rome, Paris, Saint-Tropez, you name it. The only place that even came close was a little gem in Rome's Jewish Ghetto--but even that couldn't quite top Jack's. Fast forward nearly 40 years later. I took my father to the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, and mid-track meet, a wild idea hit me: "If we head out right after this ends, we can make it to Jack's before they close at 10 PM." Five hours later, we pulled into Redding. Jack's looked almost exactly the same. And the steak? Still flawless. Still the best I've had anywhere on the planet. Funny thing is--I can't recall what happened on that first day of my now long and successful career. But I remember every single detail about that first steak at Jack's. So here's my advice: if you're ever within 100 miles of Redding and love a great steak, don't miss Jack's. Trust me, it's not just a meal--it's a memory waiting to happen. Jack's isn't just the best steakhouse in Redding--it's the best steakhouse in the world.

A place like this doesn't make it over 80 years if the food and ambience isn't amazing. Classic menu and is absolutely perfect. This was my second visit and was just as good as the first time which was amazing. The steak, salad, exceptionally cooked baked potato (I didn't know that a baked potato could stand out) and the delicious garlic bread was outstanding. This time I added fried chicken out of curiosity and it was almost as good as my grandmas! And last but not least is the incredible service. Everyone is welcoming, friendly and professional; however they made me feel at home. The restaurant was impeccably clean too! I had such an amazing dinner I had to share. I hope you have the same!

I wish I lived closer. Jack's has the most unusual set of attributes to fall in love with. It's small. The service and the menu are very, very old-school. At the same time, somehow, it is spectacularly unpretentious. My steak was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked (medium rare throughout). The baked potato was also perfect. The salad that came before was abundant (three or four platefuls), chopped (classy touch) and already dressed (with the perfect amount amount of house-made dressing--I tried their 1,000 Island and loved it). The staff was friendly and personable, treated me as if I was already a preferred customer. Dang, they make it look easy! Come for the vintage atmosphere, stay for the service, return because you need more of their food.

    10 oz New York

Friends said this was a good spot for steak, so we made a point to check this place out. Apparently, this restaurant was open during the building of the Shasta dam, and served the workers. I ordered the medium rare 10 oz New York strip and baked potato. The meal also came with a side salad and the dressing I ordered was the oil and vinegar. The steak came out perfectly cooked and was seasoned well. If you're not super hunger, then the 10 oz is perfect. The salad dressing was a little heavy on the vinegar for me even though I'm a big fan of vinegar. Overall: If you're in the mood for a solid steak, check this place out.

Felt like having a steak and though I wasn't too hip on the prices Yelp was showing me in their…read moremenu, I'd been to nearly every other steak place in Redding. The entrance was a bit tough to recognize. In addition, the sign requesting patrons to wait to be seated was absent personnel. The youngster arrived while on the phone taking a reservation. Further delay as she coordinated seating for the large group (showing up on Wednesday, she shared). She mentioned they were slow and said I could select whatever table I liked. I ordered a savory martini and filet mignon, mashed potatoes and French onion soup. Soup arrived with the martini and the two could not have been more oppositely received. The soup exquisite, the martini...nearly undrinkable. But to be fair, I wasn't expecting an overwhelming bell pepper flavor. Black pepper Absolute Vodka was the description. I detest bell peppers. I tried to choke down as much as I could, then decided to give up halfway through. The soup was sublime. A 1/4 inch slice of brown toast under the melted Swiss cheese, the broth and onions delicious. I requested a 6 ounce pour of the Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon with the steak. It arrived with my meat and potatoes beautifully plated. I'm not sure I wasn't served a sirloin. That filet was the shape of no filet I've ever bought or been served. But it was perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were sublime - buttery and flavorful. The wine with less tannins than I anticipated- I really enjoyed that. Service was attentive and both the hostess and my server checked on me. My drive back to Sacramento will be pleasant.

Mac and cheese with bacon, French onion soup and the surf & turf skewers. French onion Soup was DELICIOUS, we added a little salt to the other two dishes and they were really good too. For dinner I ordered the $24 Caesar - it was good and it was big but it was a lot for a basic good tasting Caesar. Husband ordered the Chicken Parm over pasta with a red sauce and he loved it. Portion was huge and he brought half home. For dessert we had the cheesecake and the cream brûlée, both really good. Only downside, if you are dropping almost $200 for dinner, the bathrooms need to be clean and upscale. Mold in the ladies room toilet at the waterline - yuck - and Toilet paper dispenser broken and laying on the floor in the stall. This needs improvement. Overall we were happy with our meal and we will be back.

Assistance+ Balance+…read moreCleanliness+ Deliciousness++ Environment+ Assistance: service was prompt professional and kind, we were greeted warmly and treated kindly. Our waitress was wonderful, the cook was prompt and masterful, the Owner oversaw his restaurant like a proud Lord watching over his kingdom, greeting friends and customers warmly. Balance: quantity and quality versus price were good. Cleanliness: the restaurant was good and good clean order, only complaint is there were a few flys. Clearly the opportunistic as it seemed every time someone would open a door a fly would charge in as quickly as they could following the sweet sweet smell of barbecue. Deliciousness: when I tell you I'm a barbecue snob, I mean it in every sense of the word. I've been grilling since I was a child, I've lived in the south I've lived in the east I've lived on the West Coast and I've lived in the Carolinas. My palate is normally greatly displeased with every barbecue I encounter but I take it for its own merit. Each grill master has their own ups and downs. So when I tell you this was some of the best barbecue I've ever had in my life you can take it as gospel. What you taste when you eat the barbecue here is the meat, the smoke, and the love that goes into it which is a vague term that is hard to define, if I were to try I would have to say that it's a combination of care, the way they prepare it and take care of the meat after it's prepared, seasoning, seasoning is very easy to overdo depending on the meat how long it's going to be cooked what cut it is where it came from how it was processed etc, and how they cut slice or prepare it. That's what love means when it comes to grilling and barbecue. Care, seasoning, preparation. So yes, Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse blew me away. I only sampled their ground beef, bacon, and tri-tip, but if those are any indicator at the mastery they have over meat I am looking forward to trying everything they have to offer. My tri-tip was cooked to perfection, I could taste the beef, although it was shaved very thin because I had it on a sandwich I could still tell it was tri-tip and not just roast beef being pushed off as tri-tip, the bread was fluffy and fresh and seared with a bit of butter, soft and warm but crisp on the edge, the onion rings were fluffy and yet crispy on the outside, the garlic tater tots were perfect in every way crispy crunchy and savory, the bacon blue Burger was cooked to perfection it was not overpowered by blue cheese crumble and the bacon almost seemed as if it was not only peppered but candied in thick slabs, the side order of garlic bread was perfectly cooked crisp on the edges fluffy in the middle buttery and garlicky as it should be. Absolutely incredible top marks! Environment: there are only a few tables as the restaurant is a bit smaller but what they do with their space is comfortable and works. The restaurant itself is decorated like a lodge, reminiscent of a sawmill or a logging camp, with treated wood and a log cabin aesthetic, the decorations themselves consist mostly of historic articles and photos of both friend and family and the history of the restaurant. They also sell very cool cups that I definitely meant to get and will have to go back to that one for myself and the Missus. I need to make a mental note of that. All together this was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back. Their menu had so many things I want to try. The French toast tacos caught my eye definitely going to try that. But more importantly to me I want more of that barbecue, I want to try the brisket, sausage, chicken, pulled pork, I want to try it all! If the other items are half as good as what I had today I don't think I need to eat anywhere else. If you find yourself in Shasta Lake do yourself a favor and try the Old Mill Eatery and Smokehouse. See if you can take on their Giant Smokehouse Burger or a Pit Master challenge.

Our food arrived approximately 30 minutes after ordering. The quality of the beef here was absolutely top notch. Prime beef for sure. This was the best steak I have enjoyed in Shasta County in over 10 years. Absolutely cooked to perfection. My partner's filet was massive. This had to be at least a 20 ounce filet and he enjoyed every morsel. The sides accompanying our mains, mashed potatoes and carrots for him and mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts for me, were fair to good, but not great. The carrots were raw. As in, not only very crunchy but cold all the way through. Mashed potatoes were nice and buttery, but not nearly warm enough. These spuds sat on a plate until the beef arrived. The restaurant was very kind in offering us a complimentary slice of cheesecake since we were celebrating an anniversary. The cheesecake was dense and rich and accompanied by berry sauce and caramel sauce, both of which were lovely. Freshly piped whipped cream and mixed berries and powdered sugar on the dessert plate made for a very lovely presentation, indeed, and was most appreciated. Service the entire meal was excellent. Price for our meals: $135 + $27 gratuity for a total of $162. We have paid nearly as much for a steak dinner elsewhere in Shasta County for a meal that came nowhere close to this. Worth. Every.
