I love Jacks I've been coming here since I was little with my Grandma. Today I got her fave, a mushroom burger. There was no sauce... 2 mushrooms, what gives? I've never had this happen before. Also the cashier forgot about me at the window. I love the vibe of this place, so fun! I love the nostalgia, coming here since I was a toddler. Jack's drive-in, founded in 1961 in the small town of Spruce Grove by Larry Campbell and Jack Clarke, is just a short drive west of Edmonton. It was originally a spot opened to prepare and serve ice cream and burgers to the locals and visiting folks. Throughout the years since the restaurant has been opened, it underwent many owners and renovations!! The restaurant is opened year round, but it is the perfect spot to go to during the summer month - on a nice summer day, my wife and I have gone there to eat and enjoy foods and nice weather. The restaurant has seating inside as well as outside, and of course the drive-thru. For the menu, you can except to find drive-in foods, such as burgers, hot dogs, delicious fries, fountain soda pops, ice cream and milkshakes. Jack's also serves breakfast!!! My favorite meal to eat there is either a cheeseburger or the Jack's Buffalo burger (buffalo pattie, BBQ sauce, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, fried onions, bacon and mayo), a Pepsi, share a corn fritter with my wife and if I have space, a soft chocolate ice cream. I ordered my meal with Skip and was impressed with the speedy service and delivery. I ordered the mushroom burger, a large strawberry milkshake and the family fries. The mushroom burger was good but because the sauce was so runny I doubt I would order that particular burger again. Spruce Grove is city just to the west of Edmonton and it's basically a bit of a suburb at this point. You'll find a teeny-tiny burger shack there, and let me tell you, it's adorable. VUE Weekly voted Jack's Drive-In as #1 Worth the Trip: Spruce Grove 2018 and I jumped straight into my car to make the 30 minute drive. If you blink, you'll miss this place. It's super small and old-timey, which makes sense since it has been in the exact same spot since 1961. It's a Spruce Grove landmark! They've got plenty of seating out front for outdoor dining and the inside has a few tables as well. Entering the little building is quite like stepping into a time machine, as the inside is completely decked out like something out of the 50s. Chrome bar stools, red vinyl-wrapped everything, and a jukebox that is free to use. Of course the music playing is all 50s and 60s. They've got a TV screen in one corner that is inside one of those retro wooden TV set boxes. Murals cover the walls with paintings of celebrities from the era, and it's all completely on-theme and done really well. You'll find a window to order at (they also have a drive-thru) and they offer a surprising amount of different things to eat and delicious sounding treats. The girl that took my order was extremely friendly and I couldn't help but think that working at a diner like this must be something straight out of a cliché high school drama or comedy. Jack's has different monthly specials that only happen for each particular month. These include food and drink items. Since it's October, it made natural sense to find a Pumpkin Milkshake ($5.50 for large) on the specials menu. I would have ordered a milkshake regardless so this seemed like the right thing to do. I was really impressed by this shake! Not only was it perfectly thick but the pumpkin flavour was extremely on-point. It tasted exactly like pumpkin pie filling. Just the fact that it tasted so real was unexpected. I loved this. Move over pumpkin spice latte, because Jack's pumpkin shake is super legit. All of the food arrived very quickly. The whole order was bagged and brought to the table that we were sitting at in no time at all. As an appetizer of sorts I wanted to try the Corn Fritters ($4.25 for five) because they seemed quite unique to the restaurant. They come from O'Donnell Farm and seem to be a bit of a "thing." I was asked if I wanted any jam with them (strawberry or raspberry) so I said "yes," since it sounded like the appropriate way to enjoy the fritters. They come in a bag of piping-hot, irregular golden orbs. Taking a bite, I loved the crispy exterior and the soft, sweet interior. Dipping the fritter into the jam added an extra sweetness that worked very well. These were great and perfectly cooked. I've got my eye on the deep fried pickles for next time. I figured that I would order a burger since that seemed like the main thing to eat, although there are quite a lot of other options which range from; fish & chips, Nathan's Famous hot dogs (literally the best hot dogs), and even perogies (which I liked seeing because it felt like a very Canadian prairie type of item to offer). But back to the burgers, "the one" to get has to be the Spruce Burger (A seasoned 1/3 lb beef patty, fried onions, bacon, ketchup, mustard, swiss cheese, tomato, pickle & an onion ring - $6.99). This burger was on the original menu when Jack's opened in 1961 and it used to cost only 50¢! Named after the city itself, it's definitely one of the restaurant's signature items. And it was a delicious burger! I noticed right away that everything seemed extremely fresh and it just had that homemade feeling about it. The beef patty was very juicy and meaty. (I know that "meaty" seems like an obvious thing to say, but it truly had an actual meaty quality about it.) I found the use of swiss as an interesting departure from the norm and I loved the added crunch from the crispy onion ring. This was a very good, well-executed hamburger. We also ordered Fries ($3.99 for small) because fries. While the portion size was generous, the fries were the weakest part of the whole meal. There wasn't anything special about them and they weren't fresh-cut or anything. I would certainly recommend some of the more interesting sides on the menu instead. Lastly, there had to be dessert especially with all of the amazing ice cream options on the menu. Jack's specializes in soft serve ice cream, which I love. In fact, I prefer it! There. I said it. They do all sorts of sundaes, dipped cones and whatnot but the Almond Roca (Waffle cone with vanilla ice cream, toasted coconut, hot fudge, peanuts, topped with slivered almonds - $5.99) caught my attention. I have the sense that Jack's has declined. It was my first visit. Maybe I was expecting too much. The burger itself was OK. The fried pickles were dried out-- seems like they were refried. Not a good idea. The fries were just average. Generally, the whole meal was just OK. To be fair my wife an I don't eat much so we ordered a small basic burger-- nothing special. That's exactly what we got. On the other hand we recently had an A&W Mama burger ( after a 30 year hiatus). My wife and I agreed it was surprisingly good. We had low expectations for A&W and were pleased. We had high expectations for Jacks and were disappointed. For Jacks to be competitive they have to be better than the chains. Jack's Drive-In is a historic fixture in Spruce Grove. If you haven't been, it's worth trying at least once to see if it's for you. I've been a few times now and could take it or leave it. There are better options in the area. For a diner, it had the expected diner look and feel but was smaller than expected. It focuses on drive-in/drive-thru business. The interior seating area has spots for about 20 inside and there are 4 tables outside, but most people aren't stopping in. On a hot summer day, however, the interior air conditioning is welcome. First time going here about 3 months ago was good. Went here today for the second time and the food was significantly more expensive and worse. Paid $33 + tax for a Jack's burger combo, chicken strip combo, and fried pickles. The fries came out cold, not crispy and had no salt. The chicken strip combo was $14 and had 3 small strips on a pile of fries. The burger was mediocre at best. The fried pickles were both soggy and falling apart, and tasted bitter. I'd heard stellar reviews of this place but was sadly disappointed. We had a chicken wrap, mushroom burger, a fish burger & a large order of fries. Besides lacking flavour, all seemed like the proteins were slapped on their respective wrapper/buns. Most disappointing- the fries. Fresh from the drive thru you'd expect hot, crisp fries. Instead, were trapped in a paper box left to soak up the steam at the bottom of the bag. There's no excuse for fries just seconds after receiving them to be limpy & flavorless. Thought this would be an awesome, local, gem to try since we are travelling. I was very disappointed overall and would never come here again. The patties are the frozen beef patties that you get at an arena canteen. Nothing was fresh. The mushroom burger has orange processed cheddar on it and it completely takes away from the mushroom sauce, which has canned mushrooms. Tastes like aluminium. No condiments on the cheeseburger. Bland The shake was supposed to have real fruit but it was sugary syrup. If you're going to charge that much for food you need to step up your game! Will not be back. Too bad. The mushroom burger is made with canned mushrooms and mushroom soup as the sauce. It was disgusting. The child's burger is the size of a slider. My daughter laughed as said it was for for our infant rather than herself. The corn fritters were okay, wouldn't know that's what I was eating if I didn't know beforehand. It's not *quite* a 4, but definitely better than a 3, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I've wanted to check out Jack's Drive-In for quite a while and finally got the chance this weekend. It was considerably smaller than I expected it to be. There are 3 tables on one side, and 5 or 6 bar stools up against a ledge on the other side that you can sit at. There's also a couple of patio tables outside. And don't forget the drive thru - which was lined up the entire time I was there, but seemed to move at a decent pace. When we walked up to the counter to order, there was a sign next to the register, basically telling customers to be patient with them because they are training new staff. And they weren't kidding! The lady who took our order was incredibly sweet, but clearly new to her job. The order was accurate though, so I can't complain! They got very busy when we got there and it took quite a while for the food to come out. But they were apologetic and the food came out hot. I had the mushroom burger. Its one pattie, with mushrooms (I would guess that they're from a can) and cheese (they only have processed cheese). It doesn't sound like much, and it certainly doesn't look like much, but they put enough mushroom sauce on there that it's really tasty! My mom had a hot dog with sauerkraut and bacon. You have the option of "upgrading" to a Nathan's dog, which is apparently bigger. I think she got the original one, but she said it was delicious. We also shared a "small" order of fries and gravy. The fries were tasty and the gravy was thick and rich. The table I was sitting at had a perfect view of the front counter, and when it got really busy, the girls really hustled to make sure everyone was taken care of. Drive-in's like these are so rare around here, so I get really excited when I see one and get to try it out. I'm not out this way very often, but whenever I visit friends in Spruce Grove I try to swing by Jack's. It's a classic drive-in that is pretty small on the inside with just a couple of tables and a couple of stools, and several tables outside. There is also ample parking so you can eat in your car if you so choose. Staff are super friendly, 50s tunes are playing, and Elvis and Marilyn are painted on the wall. Burgers are good - not outstanding but certainly good. Small order of fries was plentiful and overflowing. I tried a ROASTED COCONUT DIPPED CONE and my mind was blown. So delicious. They have some other stuff on the menu like poutine, chicken fingers and, oddly, perogies, so I want to try something different each time I go. read more

I've been going to Jack's for as long as I can remember and I have never been disappointed. This restaurant has been around for 50 years, and it still has the same old school vibe. The portions are huge, the regular fries could feed a whole family. I always get the regular burger and onion rings and i'm always happy with my order. This is a great place to take the whole family for ice cream on those warm summer days. Since I can remember my family would ride our bikes to Jacks for ice cream in the summer, it was such a treat and I still have these memories now at 30. The milkshakes and ice cream are absolutely delicious and they have kids cones for the little ones too. Jacks is small, with only a few tables inside, but they also have seating outside and a drive through. This is an icon to the city of Spruce Grove. Jack's has been around for over 50 years. It is almost a place that is frozen in time. The menu is frozen in time as well. You won't find the fancy gourmet burgers here. Jack's serves up some tasty food, but the patties are of the frozen variety, the buns are plain hamburger buns and the fries and onion rings are just that. Nothing pretentious here. The salsa burger here is my favorite. It is a huge sloppy mess, but so delicious! I am sure the salsa is out of a jar, and the cheese is processed. Five decades Jack's Drive-In has been around. In that time you would think they would have learned a thing or two in customer service, honesty and order accuracy. Only thing they have going for them is the charming decor inside and out. I ordered their Mini Meal which if you read online on their menu and in house, it reads that this comes with 2 TEENY BURGERS, FRIES AND A SMALL POP for $4.68. Well instead I received, 1 TEENY BURGER, MOTTS FRUITSATIONS AND FRIES.... When I asked where my other Teeny Burger was, she was like oh "I am only part time, I do not work that often" so she asked one of her co workers, their response was "we've changed the meal." Well then change your menus online and paper. Do not false advertise. Do not get me started with where my Pop ended up, Not with me that's for sure! Had to visit Jacks on our way back from the lake as we heard great things. The place I really very well decorated as a homage to the past. We had the mushroom burger and the mozzarella burger, milkshakes and onion rings. The mushroom burger was pretty good. Not the best I've had but pretty good. The jack burger was tasty my hubby said. The bun were so fresh! The onion rings were under done and not tasty at all I wouldn't recommend them. The milkshakes were great. High recommend. We absolutely love this place and love taking friends and family here. The setting is so quaint and nostalgic and everyone loves eating in when we go. The staff are friendly and service quick. The quality exceeds what you pay for the food for sure! I always get the mushroom Swiss and it's honestly the best burger I've ever had in my life. The cheese is slightly melted to the perfect state and the burger is juicy as hell!! Their fries are kind of meh in my opinion but im seriously just a fry snob so I'm sure they suffice to others. My husband just gets a normal burger and an ice cream every time and totally loves his meal. He's a picky eater so I love that we both are so satisfied after coming here. I've had the parodies before which were absolutely amazing. I love that you can pick your toppings for it. This is our favourite weekend spot and although Spruce Grove is just outside of Edmonton and becoming a bustling town all in its own, going there kind of quietens our minds and brings us into the small town feel. The first time we went was with a Groupon and the owner was there, taking the orders, and thanked us for giving the place a try & was very welcoming. I feel like experiencing that makes Jack's even more memorable and loveable. How humble is it that the management is up front helping out on the busy days? I scoped out their website tons of times, fell in love with pictures of the retro interior and despite reading numerous reviews that warned AGAINST the place decided to still hold some hope out for Jack's Drive-In. MAJOR let down. We ordered: Chicken burger with poutine & large pop Buffalo burger w onion rings & large pop The Buffalo patty was very bland and did not look very fresh. The onion rings weren't too bad in flavor. After eating about 6 onion rings & 3 bites of my Buffalo burger I already knew things were not going to end well for me. I ended up with food poisoning. The Chicken burger was very dry but edible in comparison to the Buffalo burger. My friend was not very impressed by the gravy or the fries. I love the idea of drive thru's and appreciate a swell looking interior, but I'm more concerned with the quality of the food. I can't say that I will ever eat their food again, but I may in the future consider going back to try a milkshake. read more

I love jacks however this experience was terrible. I live in Edmonton and came to pickup some food for me and my brother. I got my usual order (coffee milkshake and chicken burger) last time I went I ordered inside it took forever but the burger was GREAT. I went through the drive through tonight to hopefully get my food faster and it was. However when I got home and opened the bag and box the burger was 1/4 the size it was last time and very slimy, the lettuce was bigger than the chicken and had a huge brown spot in the middle as well as practically no honey mustard sauce. I payed way to much for this meal (and driving) for this quality and am really sad about it. Was only able to eat half of it before feeding it to my dog and I almost never waste food. Loves jacks but this time was a HUGE bust and I don't think I will order this burger again. read more

Hey Daddy-o, if you blink you'd miss this place! it's itty bitty but smells amazing in there. Cool 50's diner feel, and makes you wish you had worn your leather. I had a poutine which when it came I was a little dissapointed by the look (shredded cheese and some fries and gravy.) Boy was I shocked when I tasted it, such good flavor and so filling all you really need for a good snack is the 1/2 size! Little cup of pop though I should'a upsized. I am going back for sure! I want too try the rum and butter milkshake and maybe grab a burger too!
