I traveled from California to visit family in SC and needed two skirts hemmed for an upcoming international trip. The owner pinned both skirts and then told me the charge for one skirt was $63 and $48 for the other. I'm like "wow" I've been short my entire life and have gotten the majority of my pants and skirts hemmed all over the country and have never paid this much for a hem. She told me the price was based on how wide the skirt was at the bottom. Both skirts are a size extra small, just too long and my pick up date was in two days which means it will take you no time to hem them. Talking about ripping people off. Not sure if she saw the car I was driving or based the price on the fact that I told her I was going on a trip out of the country but it was a strong "no thanks" for me. I will pay the price if it's worth the service being done. $20-$30 was over priced per item and that I was willing to pay bc that's what I usually pay in California which is much higher based on cost of living. But you mean to tell me a tiny business operating out of a mobile home on two notch road is charging west coast prices? Or, is it just bc I'm a melanated woman and you prefer to not service me. Either way, I will take my business elsewhere. Will never come back here. I also witnessed the owner go back and forth with a customer prior to me (African American as well), because the customer was asking her if she would place a wide elastic band in her sleeves. She insisted on placing the thin elastic band and kept saying "it's the same thing it doesn't matter". The customer then said, "I want wide elastic bc it works better for me and I'm paying for it". It settled by the customer refusing services and leaving bc the owner was charging her an enormous amt to use the wide elastic. This should have been my red flag to leave as well. Apparently, they're racist against servicing black people. If I would have read the comments on here prior to I would have known. All positive comments are from non- AA people. It's sad that there's only a few seamstress and alteration locations in Columbia, SC and most of them do NOT want to service black people. You can only afford to work and open businesses in black communities but you'd rather be friendly and accommodating to everyone except black people when we pay just the same. Very sad. Customers have a right to request how and what they want their garment to look like. It's your right as the seamstress to say whether or not you are skilled in providing the service or not. You cannot get an attitude when a client refuses to pay ridiculous prices when they KNOW they're being unfairly charged and treated in comparison to other customers. You use attitude and price gauging as a tactic to run off your black customers because you don't like us, yet you're posted up in our communities bc you can't open a business anywhere else. read more

I have never had any problems with anything I've taken to be altered. I do think alterations are very pricey these days.

Not sure why others are having so many challenges with their alterations. I've been a patron for several years. The turnaround is incredible. read more

I have been taking my alterations to Jackie's for over 20 years. I have always had good results and timely. I think rates are reasonable, too. Sorry the other reviewers had trouble; I never have. read more

If I could give these people zero stars I would. These people are greedy and they do not understand how to conduct business professionally nor do they understand how to establish and maintain a trusting and long-lasting relationship with customers. Their only concern is with making a dollar. My soon-to-be mother-in-law took her chiffon evening gown to Jackie's for alterations for our upcoming wedding. She ordered the dress online and paid $285 for it. She needed the bottom hemmed and an inside and outside hem. She also needed it to be let out on the sides. She asked them if they would be able to do all of this and they said they might be able to do it and she wrote "may be able to" at the top of the receipt. This was a bad business practice from the beginning. Either you can or cannot do an alteration. There should be no gray area in this type of business where customer satisfaction is the key to your business' success. My mother-in-law left the dress with them, came back to pick it up, and of course the work was poorly executed. The dress' fabric had been chopped off the back to allow for the extra fabric on each side. The back closure was bunched up near the button and could no longer be fastened. The bottom hem was still not properly done; it was still too long and poorly stitched. My mother in law expressed her dissatisfaction with the dress and the manager took off ONLY $5 of the $155 due for the alterations. And last but not least, the dress smelled like mildew and moth balls. Apparently there is mold or water damage in the single-wide trailer that this business operates out of. When you walk in you are hit with this horrible stench of mildew and moth balls. It appears that they are trying to use mothballs to cover up the odor. My mother-in-law was so upset about this ordeal that I went back with her the next day to discuss what could be done to fix the dress, or to get a refund for the alterations. The manager immediately became loud and defensive with us. She was very rude, speaks horrible English, and kept repeating that because she wrote she "may be able to do it" on the receipt that it prevents her from giving a refund. After no compromise could be reached, I asked could she at least have the dress dry cleaned to try to get rid of the smell so that we could take it somewhere else to be fixed. They still refused. Things became so ugly that we called the police. The officer advised us to take them to small claims court. I had no idea that my mother-in-law was going to take her dress to this place if I had known in advance I would've begged her to go somewhere else because I also had a previously bad experience with this place when I was in college. My $75 RL jeans were hemmed too short and the waist in the back was so improperly taken in to the point where the seams were running together and no longer looked like its original design. Please do not take your items to this place unless you want shoddy work,to waste your hard-earned money, receive horrible customer service, and for your clothes to smell like mildew. We ended up going to Nick's Tailoring downtown on Lady St. He was able to fix the dress to our satisfaction AND he got the smell out. Nick is a true professional and he will do the job properly. He was a truly a blessing to us after going through such a stressful ordeal with Jackie's. read more

Avoid this location at all cost!!!!! I took three suits to this location for "major" alterations. Every suit had one sleeve shorter than the other. The hem was too short on two pair of the pants. I took them back two times for corrections but still was not pleased. I ended up take my suits elsewhere to get them properly altered. Waste of $339 dollars. I noticed she has a lot of black costumers. Please note you are settling for subpar alterations and over pricing! read more
