Food is great in price and taste, is just that I have to buy everything to go, because of the cigarrete smell.

My boyfriend and I tried this place today. It's a bar and allows smoking inside so it's only 21+ which is good for people who aren't a fan of kids. Not sure if there's a no smoking area, we got the food to go & left. We ordered on the phone and only had to wait a few minutes once there to pick up our order. Onto the food, omg, the prices are AMAZING!!! We got two steaks, with sides for $27! The steak was huge compared to what i'm used to from other steakhouses, affordable & yummy. There was some fat on the steak but for how big the cut is, it's not bad! For sides we got a baked potato and salad, both were good. I barely had room for the potato after the steak. I was in town housesitting for a friend. I was just looking for a dive bar but what I found was heaven. It's a smoking bar, which I don't like but it comes with the territory. I cannot explain how ridiculously cheap this place is. I was hesitant at first to eat there because I didn't think it could possibly be good. Boy was I wrong. The food paired with amazing service from all the bartenders and great drinks had me coming back for every meal for the entire week after I found the place. I'm not kidding.... This has got to be a right of passage in York Pennsylvania. This is not upscale, it's not romantic is just a blue collar bar and grill that allows smoking. Met several good people at the bar while there as the dining room was not open at that time. There prices were incredible and the food quality was pretty solid for the price. Sirloin and scallops was $10! Don't stop here if you have breathing problems or smoke allergies, this isn't your place but if you can handle unbelievable prices and cash only you gotta check this place out. read more

This place is an a local dive bar with incredible food at very reasonable pricing. If you are not able to be around smoke this is not for you. The smoking is limited to the bar area- separate from dining. You do not need to wear a tuxedo or ball gown here for fresh seafood, clean and replenished salad bar with the traditional red beet eggs :)! my favorite! Our last trip there was $31 for a HUGE prime rib dinner, scallops, 2 orders of breaded mushrooms, a very large plate of perfect French fries, a large glass of very good Merlot (and 2 fabulous desserts that we took home). went there for lunch with my granddaughter the food was good but the waitress was horrible. I understand the get busy it took almost 45 minutes to get our food where the table beside us just came in and were waited on and had there food with in about 15 minutes. I grew up in York, but moved away in the mid 80's and just moved back full time in 2012. I'd never heard of Jackie Bs until about a month ago, but I understand it's been around forever. Once I found out about the prices I had to try it. Went last night for dinner around 7:30ish. There are two doors from the parking lot, one for the dining room, one for the bar. Our friends were in the bar, so we went there, but found out that in order to get a table, you really should just go in the door marked dining room, because that's where they expect you be if they're going to seat you. Once that very minor point of confusion was cleared up, we were seated and provided with menus in a short amount of time. I didn't really need a menu, because I already knew I wanted the house special, which is New York Strip steak (8 oz) and 2 veggies for $5.95. Only two of us were eating and my friend ordered the same. We also got an order of fried mushrooms and fried cauliflower. I think they were both about $3.50. The mushrooms were bar food quality, but it was a decent portion and I was happy with it. The cauliflower looked a little bit sparse, because it was a couple larger florets, but a bunch of really small ones. The food was good and was cooked to order. One of the steaks was ordered medium rare and looked like it was correctly cooked. The other was medium and also was as expected. The baked potatoes were fine, not huge, but served with butter and sour cream. As far as sides go, the options were various types of potatoes and fries, mixed veggies, and applesauce. I thought the food was pretty good for what it cost. My expectations were met and in some ways probably exceeded. The waitress was pretty friendly and even though there isn't a full wall between the restaurant and bar, the restaurant wasn't as smoke-filled as you might expect from a smoking establishment. Spoiler alert: the bar is exactly as smoke-filled as you might expect. When it came time to pay the check, my bill was $10.98 for the steak dinner, mushrooms, and a Yuengling lager draft. I would definitely go back again and consider the pizza next time. I believe it was $6.50 for a 12" pie; I don't recall how much extra for toppings. I like a good crust, so that's always a concern when trying pizza at a new place. Overall, I was pleased with Jackie Bs. Keep your expectations in check, but if you do, I think most people can find something to like about the place. read more

Jackie B's is amazing. (when the good cook is on. Name Unknown.) How can you really beat the Jackie B's Special? A mysterious, yet delicious steak with two sides for $4.95? York urban legend declares the price has not changed since the 70's. I would have to agree. A draft beer is 90 cents. Mixed drinks are $1.70. Yes, its a little ghetto and grubby, and yes you might get mugged by the 'white tee shirt' gang on your way out, but I certainly think its worth a $5 steak! Oh yeah, and there are...TWO...count-em...TWO ladies rooms. yes. On a side note, I would recommend NOT getting any drink that has fruit in it. The prices at Jackie Bs are out of the 50s! The waitress is very friendly and the service good on a Thursday night. I had fried scallops and French fried for $6 and they were good! My sone had surf and turf for $13 and it was good! We brought home our dessert (chocolate cake and carrot cake), and they were good!! Yuengling was ok for $1.50. Total bill came to $26 plus tip. We'll be back! This is a smoking establishment (not our favorite but it wasn't bad). They do not accept credit. read more

Fond memories are sometimes very hard to erase from the human mind. Many years ago, being young and having no regard to the ill effects of overwhelming 2nd hand smoke and artery-clogging grease, I used to frequent Jackie B's. I remember the food as being tasty and the clientele interesting. Time passes and now I have a family. We were coming through York and everyone was hungry so I headed for this place - knowing that nobody besides myself had ever eaten here. The faded sign out front still proclaims "FAMILY RESTAURANT" in big letters. As we unloaded, an old WWII vet in a wheelchair says, "They don't allow kids in there". I point to the 'family' part of the sign and he just shrugs and zips away on his motorized device. Being quite hungry and able to smell the aroma of frying food, I walk inside to confirm this statement. A nice waitress says that because they chose to stay a smoking establishment no kids are allowed. I comment that this is 2011 and question the business sense of this. Her reply was that the staff is eager for the law to eventually truly eliminate smoking inside (it is now riddled with loopholes and exemptions ) and that when it does - kids will again be allowed. I wondered how many bridges this current policy has caused to be burnt and went back to my car. I took my family a few short miles away to Kelly's where I deposited the $60 that could have been spent at Jackie B's. A lung cancer doctor should setup a mobile clinic outside as the smoke was so thick you needed a machete to chop through it. Reading some other reviews and adding my latest first hand experience I wonder who is at the helm of this seemingly misguided ship. Thanks for nothing. read more

Hood little rinky dink bar. I guess you can call it a restaurant. When my kids got older I took them in, only because the cigarette smoke is so bad. Everytime I go out in York or just want to chill somewhere and talk for an hour or two I come here. Drinks are about $1.70-$2.50 for mixed drinks all night every night! You can't beat that! The food is excellent, We always warm up here 1st and order wings and cheese sticks before our night out. Morgan the bartender keeps the drinks coming and knows the usual crowd by their drink of choice just by eyeing them in the crowd. She starts a tab for those she knows which is kinda trusting and old skool. Speaking of which, between 9 and 11 the crowd is ridonkulous. We usually have to stand when we get there, but, knock on wood, within 20 minutes we snatch (literally) some seats from people leaving. The crowd is diverse from old to young, country to hip hop. People will generally strike up a conversation with anyone sitting near them. The only thing is ever since the shootings (did I say it's in the hood) kitchen closes @ 11 and last call @ midnight, but you can order drinks in advance to hold you til 2. Good luck finding a seat, but worth a trip in. If your never not sure what to do, go to Jackie Bs with whatever you have on. read more

Went here upon a recommendation of a friend. Took my wife and my 13 year old daughter. Although there was a sign about no one under 21 being permitted inside, we all assumed that this was in reference to the bar area. There are two distinct entrances for the bar and the dinning room. The waitress greeted us, gave us menus, and gave us time to decide what we wanted. Ten minutes later, she curtly demanded ID from us. We explained that we were not interested in drinks or entering the bar area. She said the restaurant's policy is to not serve anyone under 21. We were very upset since she did not make any reference to this upon greeting us and wasted our time. We were also dumbfounded as to why the restaurant has a "Children's Menu"??? Either they pick and choose who they want to let in, or their menus are extremely outdated. They have the right to prohibit minors, but I also have the right to share our poor experience through word of mouth. I hope it was worth it for them. read more

This place is awesome according to my standards HOWEVER it is a dive bar and they do allow smoking so if smoking bothers you this is not the place to go. If you can deal with smoke for an hour, have good food and drinks, and save a bunch of money this place is a hidden gem in York, PA. Jackie B's is the best dive around and it's sad all the yuppie morons are dissing it. It's old, it's smoky, it's transitioned into more of a bar than a family restaurant (duh), it's small, they require ID... because it's a BAR! Oh, and they don't take bank cards. c'mon man. Big deal. That's Jackie B's. You don't go there for the fine dining, convenient location, and ambiance. So, yes the one star reviews are accurate. But, they were just pissed off and are trying to hurt their business. Good luck with that, the place is always full! I give it 5 stars because, it is as good as it gets in the Dive Bar category. The staff is really nice, the crowd is friendly. The food & drinks are CHEAP, which btw is why you go to Jackie Bs. NO loud annoying music that inhibits conversation. Nice TVs. I don't go often, maybe 4 times a year and the bar scene isn't my thing. But, hanging out with friends eating awesome food and drinkin some beer for mega-cheap. I'm down with that. Cheap eats at this neighborhood bar make it a reasonable choice for a quick cheap lunch. Classical American food are the staples, as are cheap ($1 draft) beers and a smoky ambiance. There is some grime. Not for the shy, the terribly discriminating, or for those that demand clean cutlery all the time. read more

I've been here once now and I've got some mixed emotions about the place. I love dive bars, and this is a pretty good example. If you do not like smoking, DO NOT come here. There is a bar and restaurant side, however they are only divided by an imaginary line. The food is good and some dirt cheap prices. I got a good size NY strip with 5 large fried shrimp and 2 sides for $8.95. I can't think of anywhere else in York that has that kind of deal on good food. The drink prices are also very reasonable. For me, the downside of this bar is location. It is not in the worst part of the city, but it is the city nonetheless. This by nature, seems to bring in some somewhat sketchy clientele. They do close at midnight though, to cut down on any late night nuisances. If you are looking for a good meal and few drinks for cheap, check this place out. Just remember you will be surrounded in cigarette smoke as you eat. Make sure you also bring cash, as I am almost certain they only take cash. read more

This place is great! You CANNOT beat the prices, anywhere!! And the food is actually pretty good. I always get the crabcakes, with 2 sides and a dinner roll, all for only $9.95. Drinks are cheap too, cheaper than anywhere I've ever been to be honest. Like previous reviews said, the place does get crowded, and is smoky, especially if you're in there at a real busy time. My advice, go early, beat the crowd, and beat the smoke. If you're there late, to drink, it also gets crowded, but overall a pretty friendly and diverse crowd. Some would say it's a little ghetto, but those people probably shouldn't be there anyway. I suggest at least checking the place out, give it a chance. This is not just for alcohol/beer; it means to eat-in as well. 3) Unclean bathrooms! To be honest, I've always adored Jackie B's for its good tasting, cheap, and prompt service. I would like to give this place NO star but unfortunately the option isn't available... On Sunday April 8, 2018 I treated my mother out for dinner. We got there around 6PM. We stood in the dinning room repeatedly passed by the two waitresses for almost 20 minutes before we were even acknowledged... Once acknowledged, we were told that we can wait in the hallway or outside until a table is available. So we waited another 15-20 minutes before the waitress cleared off a dirty table for us. At this point we have been there for at least half an hour before being seated at a table that was available (but dirty) when we walked in... It just took the waitress a bunch of time to clear it. So after being there and waiting at least 30 minutes we are finally seated.... next to a table of obnoxiously rude speaking degenerates. From the time we were seated until we were brought menus was approx 15 minutes... My mother orders a House special and potato skins w/ cheese. I ordered an appetizer of hot wings and a 14oz NY Strip steak (medium pink center) entree with a crab cake. About 20-25 minutes later the food comes out.. My moms potato skins tasted as if they were prepared a day or two prior and reheated. She said it tasted very un-fresh. My 14oz NY Strip steak was so over-cooked there was absolutely no juice on the plate. I cut the steak in half and literly picked it up and squeezed it and no juice came from it. Even if it was well done (But juicey) I would have been satisfied.. But this steak was DRY and bland tasting. I told the waitress I didn't want it... She said she'd bring me another and I made sure to tell her again - Medium with pink center... So 15 minutes passes and my mom finished her steak and fries and out comes this slab of meat their calling a "14oz NY Strip"... It was about 1/4" thick and very fatty throughout the whole slab of meat. It looked to me to be a very poor quality cut of rib-eye... And that steak too was overcooked and dry... At this point we have been there well over 90 minutes and have had the worse service and food I have ever experienced. I told our waitress I didn't want the food and we'd just like our bill. For the record. I was NOT charged for any of the food served to me. And I wouldn't have paid had they tried to charge me. I think they need to invest in more waitresses so the patrons are conveniently taken care in a timely manner. Two waitresses for the whole dinning room just isn't enough. And they need to address the quality standards in the kitchen. My mom has been going to Jackie B's for decades but over the last year or so she hasn't been going nearly as often mostly due to the "rough crowd" that tend to be there for the cheap food. From now on we will just spend a little more money and go elsewhere. The service was decent and the prices were cheap. However this place still allows smoking in the dining area, gross (most other restaurants in this day and age do not). And they don't take credit/debit cards which is annoying in 2018 but they do offer an ATM. The best thing about the food we ordered was the mozzarella sticks, those were delicious and on point. As for the burgers and fries we ordered, the meat tasted weird, I took one bite and never touched it again. The cheese fries were lukewarm and a bit funky tasting as well. Great prices and decent food. Its nice that some establishments will pay the extra fees to still allow their patrons to smoke, especially BARS. If you have a problem with smoke, then you probably should find somewhere else. But the bartender, Angie, is a diamond in the rough. I don't get how this place can have all these bad reviews when it is super affordable and the food tastes great. For around 16 dollars, I got a pizza burger, a Reuben, chicken tenders, cheese fries (I asked for extra cheese and they did not disappoint), French onion soup, and shrimp bisque. Everything was delicious and I will definitely be returning. I used to go here a lot. It was one of my favorites places to dine but I stopped going cause the service is sooooo terrible! Last time I was there the waitress didn't refill any of our drinks for our table of five so we asked for water and she says she'll be right there! Minutes pass and no water. After maybe 12 to 15 min pass we ask another waitress for water and he gives a a glass of warm water with no ice. I stopped dining in and started ordering take out but I'll soon stop doing that because the people taking your order on the phone are still rude.
