Shady behavior and shoddy work. First, they started 3 weeks behind schedule. Next, they hacked big branches off my tree without warning. I understand they need clearance for trucks, but I had *just* paid Ponderosa $1125 to trim that very tree, fixing PG&E's previous hack job. You're pavers, not arborists. If you need trimming done, tell me in advance and I'll get it done right. Then, they used illegal gas-powered leaf blowers to shoo leaves off the street: lazy, against the law, and passive-aggressive, as they blew these leaves directly into our driveway--twice. They could've used a leaf vacuum truck or a Black-n-Decker leaf vacuum. They also left two open bottles of chemical slurry (generated from their job) on my neighbor's median strip for several weeks. Any animal or transient could have ingested or knocked over this liquid. Finally, they tore all my posters advertising our driveway concert off my tree, my neighbor's tree, and two street signs. Their micro- and macro- aggressions, disrespectfulness, boorishness and block-headed behavior will not be forgotten. read more

Well the driveway turned out good. However when moving my property around he put my $40,000 boat on the side of my hill and proceeded to not cover it, leaving it exposed then leaf blew the whole driveway, which is about 35 yards long and 20 yards wide at the top. My cherry interior of a boat is now covered in filth and I am the one who gets to clean it. When he put it back on the driveway from the hill, he dropped the items on the swim platform right off the side into the dirt and left it there. Careless and pathetic. Personally wish he would cover a cleaning on my boat and apologize for being unprofessional with a valuable asset of mine. read more

Ben Hubbard and Al Perez from JV Lucas were extremely helpful, efficient, and responsive to our questions when our family and two of our adjacent neighbors collaborated to get our parking areas paved. Ben came to our homes three separate times to answer our questions and assure us that all of our drainage needs would be met. They also had to do a lot of rescheduling to coordinate their work with the county's shelter-in-place rules, and they always communicated these changes to us in a very professional manner. The day the paving was done there was a gigantic group of workers and equipment in place on our street exactly when they said they would arrive in the morning, and the entire 3-house project was completed in four hours. J.V. Lucas rebuilt our long, sloping asphalt driveway, and did a fantastic job. Our job was not simple; berms to direct water flow, a couple of drain grates to be paved around, a challenging transition to the carport, and brand new landscaping/fencing adjacent to the project. Job quality was AAA, and no damage to anything. In addition to great work, everything was done in one day, from demolition to repaving. Equipment was all onsite by 7:00 a.m. and gone by 5:30. A couple of other notes: J.V. Lucas originally re-built my driveway in 1998, so it lasted 22 years, attesting to the construction quality - the sub-surface base homeowners can't see. Clean-up was impeccable. The price was very reasonable. Lastly, the workers were all very friendly and polite, which is very helpful as some neighbors can get a bit irritated when construction equipment is on residential streets. I contacted JV Lucas Paving to repair badly damaged asphalt paving in front of my home in the Oakland Hills. I had received advice from my civil engineering brother as to the work needed and what the cost should be. Of the three contractors I contacted, JV Lucas correctly assessed the work to be done, were right inline with the expected cost and were able to schedule a convenient date within about a week. On the appointed day, they arrived promptly at 7 am with three pieces of heavy equipment and a crew of six people including the english-speaking foreman. The crew was very experienced, set to work immediately and worked together like a well-practiced team. Nobody loafed. The job was completed in four hours, exactly the time they had estimated. Professional in all respects, from the proposal, to the day-before visit to confirm project details, to the 8 person crew that worked an 11 hour day to completely remove and replace our approximately 4,500 sq. ft driveway, taking great care to avoid any damage to the hedges that border the driveway . This company has been around for 60+ years-- the project foreman proudly told us he had been working for Lucas for 35 years. The bid was competitive, and in light of the superintendents that met with us 3 times (before, during and after project completion), the foreman and large work crew, the 3 tractors, 2 large trucks and the paving machine involved in the work, quite reasonable. The driveway was worn out at our house in Lafayette. Got a few price quotes for asphalt paving. JV Lucas Paving was one of the reasonable quotes. On the job day, they came a few hours late but apologized and explained earlier work took longer than expected. OK, that happens sometimes. Before they started the work, we went over some of the details such as edge to the structure, hardscape, and plants, and dealing with downspouts and watering line. Lucas Paving recently did our shared driveway/road. We had put off this project for several years, as we had been very stressed out about taking it on for several reasons, which I won't belabor in my YELP review. Paving a road is very expensive and very stressful. Often, agreements and negotiations have to be made with your neighbors. If anything goes wrong, not only will you suffer, but also you will suffer the wrath of your neighbors. And once your road has been torn up, there is no going back- so you better have real professionals handling the job. I cannot say enough about Lucas Paving. They come in with the GIANT equipment (several trucks and dozers), a full highly skilled crew, and then they systematically, efficiently, and skillfully pound the job out. The owner is on site overseeing the job, he communicates directly with you, and even gets on the steamroller himself. The crew worked unbelievably hard and were incredibly neat and efficient. The new street was finished in record time, it is beautiful and the neighborhood was cleaned up before they left. Lucas Paving made a very stressful project as stress free as possible. I contracted with JV Lucas to remove my current asphalt driveway and replace it with new asphalt. They arrived on time like a Navy Seal Team. Immediately everyone knew what to do and how to do it. The men and equipment worked all day excavating and contouring my property and when they left, the driveway was beautiful. They hauled away everything and cleaned up after the project. On Aug 11,2012 at about 1:00 PM, Jim Lucas Paving company crew, of Lafayette, was here to do a asphalt repair job. After a year and 2 months of waiting, Mr. Lucas and crew did a fantastic, incredible repair job to our untrained eye. The needed repair due to circumstances of failing original work, the crew foreman with approval from the boss decided to actually make good on the total section and replaced the whole bloody thing. Based on our untrained eye, this was, during the hottest part of the day, the most intense replacement with attention to details one could experience right along with intense heat on this very very hot day. Superb workmanship, excellent crew direction and thoroughness one could have performed. This company is most worthy of recommendation to others who wish to have a road repair done. Although the weather was extremely hot, the crew was very courteous, friendly, and sociable. They answered questions freely with plenty of information to satisfy anyone. An excellent company if one is in need of some asphalt work in and around their home or even work place. read more

We had Lucas Paving resurface our long, fairly steep, shared driveway off of Reliez Valley Road a few months ago and my neighbors and I were beyond happy with the outcome. It makes the difference of night and day - we love it. The crew were courteous, friendly, and the whole process went without a hitch. They worked fast, efficiently and we were only unable to drive on it for 2 days... Very noninvasive to our lives! I would highly recommend their services - Jim was fabulous. They were putting a new layer of asphalt over the parking lot. They taped off the entire building and the paving started at the access points to the businesses during business hours. Customers had to go under the tape, through the landscaping, across an path that was obviously left as an afterthought. Wow, what a fabulous experience. Five homeowners own a very steep private driveway in Montclair that hadn't been paved since its construction in 1960. It had to be taken down to base. After reviewing several bids and several options, the neighbors selected JV Lucas Paving. Owner, Jim Lucas, did an amazing job of orchestrating a crew of 12 people and 12 major pieces of equipment. He estimated 2 1/2 days and finished the job 1 1/2 days, and covered more space than the original specs. The driveway is now a work of art! His crew worked like a symphony--fascinating to watch. Not Impressed! If I could leave 0 stars I would. Called in early August and asked about repairing an asphalt birm (sp?) at the end of my elderly mothers driveway (Walnut Creek). The Lady was very nice and said no job is too small but it is the busy season so it would be a few weeks before they could come out and take a look. Called back around the 3rd week in Sept. and was told that temp help had put the job request in the Moraga file, okay we made an appointment for someone to come and look at the job on a Friday @ 4 PM in 1 week. I told them I would be driving from Milpitas to meet them. I drove 2 hours in traffic to meet a no show. At 4:30 I called and had to leave a message saying I was supposed to meet someone at 4 and if they were going to show, please call. I followed the instructions and left my phone number twice. It's been 9 days with no call back. If you don't want the job TELL ME UP FRONT, don't waste my time and I won't waste yours. Effectively I have wasted 2 months. read more

I didn't give a review until now because I wanted to see how the new driveway held up over time. Back in Oct 2011 we wanted to create a new driveway across the front of our house where there was just shrubs, weeds and a sloping hillside. I got estimates from three companies but I felt the most comfortable with Lucas Paving. The owner (Jim) came out and even offered to rip out a long row of junipers for me while the equipment was there. The junipers didn't need to be cleared for the new driveway but I mentioned I was planning on taking them out so he offered to rip them out for me at no expense. How many companies would do that? On the day of the job I couldn't believe the amount of people and equipment that arrived for the job. It was incredible to watch, no one stood around, they all worked their butts off. It was precision work, the clearing of debris and old walkways, the grading for the new driveway and then the laying of the base material and asphalt. It really was fascinating to watch the transformation and how quickly they did it. The owner (Jim) was there on the day of the job, jumping on the tractor, directing employees, a real hands-on owner. Jim kept in contact with me during the process ensuring the slope and width was to my satisfaction. Jim was initially concerned how stable one corner of the driveway would be where there was a steep drop off so he really packed down the base material on that side. I couldn't believe how fast they transformed a weed grown slope into a beautiful length-of-the-house driveway. They cleaned up after themselves and made sure I was happy. It was a pleasant surprise to work with a company that had so much customer service. And the driveway has help up wonderful so far. Also, other companies I got quotes from told me I would have had to seal the driveway right away, another expense. But Jim told me that wasn't necessary and to wait 6 months to a year and then seal it. That proved to me Jim wasn't just trying to make a quick buck; he really cared about his customers and told them the truth. Lucas Paving was professional, fast and has outstanding customer service. Even though my family has used Lucas paving over the years, I will never use them again. I have been extremely disappointed with their follow-up. I have called them numerous times and they acknowledged their lack of response (too busy) yet with no results. I believe they have too much work and not enough staff to handle any further issues.
