j.p. licks never disappoints. my boyfriend and i ordered the medium mint cookies and cream, and they even let us split it into 1 scoop in a cone and 1 scoop in a cup - so we paid for a medium instead of 2 smalls. small is $5.80, medium is $7.15 and large is $7.85. you can choose to put the ice cream in a cup, waffle cone, chocolate dipped cone, dipped and rolled sprinkle cone or a slider sundae (red sox plastic cap). we loved the mint flavor - it didn't taste too artificial. it was just right! service is great. the line can get long at times, but it moves quickly. when we were there, 3 servers were serving at the same time. overall rating: 10/10

Beautiful small ice team shop, very clean and cozy. Awesome ice cream. We did not stay long but it looks like even now (2020 times), the place is well known by locals and there people coming in for a scoop or two. Very clean and cozy.

The employees there are friendly and quick. Stopped by an hour before they closed the other day, and the line wasn't bad. They have a lot of great flavors to offer, and the employees there not only encouraged me to try different flavors but also didn't seem to mind if I wanted multiple samples. I tried two of the monthly flavors, London Fog and Kowlua, and would definitely recommend both as the unique flavors of their beverage counterparts really came through and worked well with the creamy ice cream base. The small is actually a couple scoops, so you can mix and match, which is what I did. Though J.P. Licks is a bit pricey, it's definitely worth it every once in a while.

We came here on date night for a quick dessert and splurged on a banana split, which was MUCH bigger than I expected. The ice cream flavors we tried were strawberry, coconut almond chip, and black raspberry. The coconut almond chip was amazing. We added cherries, whipped cream, hot fudge, and waffle bits, topped with MORE whipped cream. We were so full. I've never NOT finished an ice cream until this night. It was worth all the calories.

Extraordinary good luck for all of us in Wellesley: we've got our own JP Licks now! And it is tasty. It was sad to lose the Body Shop, but it was great to get a local business in its place. Especially a local business that is so creamy and delicious. We were both feeling really cruddy, and we got some tea and Cookies 'N Cream ice cream. Both were just what the doctor ordered. The ice cream is as rich, decadent, and amazing as I've ever had it in Jamaica Plain itself. The cool thing that they're doing is actively mentioning to customers that if you register a new Cow Card, you get a free ice cream and a free coffee/tea/drink. This is their customer loyalty program, and although we already have a cow card (and have reaped so many of the benefits of it in our time in Boston), it was great to hear them talking it up. I got a free ice cream on my birthday, and you get a reward coupon for making a certain amount of purchases. One of the best cards I carry. I'm looking forward to seeing how things continue to shape up at our newest ice cream parlor!

For some reason J.P. Licks has always been an ice-cream shop that everyone raves about. This has always confused me, as the ice-cream is good, but there is nothing overly special about it. I visited this JP Licks location last week with my younger sister as we were shopping in Wellesley center. My sister ordered the cookie sandwich, and I had a black coffee. My sisters two cents on the cookie sandwich- "The cookies were not great, but the actual ice-cream was amazing. Sadly, there was not enough between the two cookies, so the cookie to ice-cream ratio suffered." My coffee was good, but once again, just average. I would say overall, JP Licks is a good ice-cream / coffee shop, but it is nothing special.

You'll see big painted letters, illuminated by lights as if a divine revelation from the Lord above that reads "A Life Without Anything Good is Bad". Van Leeuwen's website takes that thought even further with this - "What could be happier than that magic combination of milk, cream, eggs, and cane sugar (or coconuts, cashews and oats for our vegan friends)? Yes, our ice cream has fat. And that's okay. It's good-good, not good-bad". OK, that kind of gets your expectations up for some great ice cream, and Van Leeuwen sure delivered on that expectation. Their ice cream experience starts with the large amount of floor space their store occupies. It's a big open space with pretty yellow and pink and woodgrain color schemes. The ordering area is spacious, as is their dining area if you want to gobble up your cones and cups inside the store. Their business model is crushing it, considering they've only been around since 2008, but already have 34 stores in New York, 13 in California, 3 in New Jersey, 8 in Texas, 5 in Pennsylvania, 2 in Colorado, 4 in (downstate) Connecticut, 7 in Washington D.C., 4 in Massachusetts, one in Florida, 2 in Nashville, and dozens more coming soon across the continent. When I was checking out their flavors, I saw another sign that read "If you have a mouth, we have a flavor". There were 16 regular, 6 vegan, and three special flavors on the menu board yesterday, so that's a very nice selection. I went with a cup of a special flavor - "Sweet Corn Blueberry Jam" with a dark chocolate curl topping. It was wonderful. I truly tasted more blueberry than sweet corn in the dish, but those itty-bitty ribbons of dark chocolate were fantastic. Van Leeuwen is not the least expensive ice cream shop I've seen, but it sure is one of the more fun places to visit, and their ice creams are great.

Needham Junction Ice Cream is a small seasonal ice cream shop located right by the train station,…read moreand it has a classic neighborhood feel that makes it a natural stop during the warmer months. We walked up to a simple, casual setup that is more of a quick stop for a treat rather than a place to sit and spend a long time, but the location adds a little extra charm with trains passing by while you enjoy your cone. The shop is compact and unpretentious, the kind of place that feels rooted in the community. The biggest highlight for us was the portion size and value. The servings are generous for the price, especially compared to many other ice cream shops where portions can feel smaller. The ice cream itself is satisfying, with a creamy texture and flavors that cover the classics without trying to reinvent the wheel. We appreciated the variety of regular ice cream options, which gave us enough choices to find something that fit our mood. The soft serve selection is a little more limited, so we would not come specifically expecting a huge range of soft serve combinations, but the regular ice cream options make up for it with their quality and portion size. The shop can get crowded during busy summer evenings, especially when families and people from the neighborhood stop by. Since it is a smaller setup, the line can build up quickly, but the service moves along at a reasonable pace. The staff handled the steady flow efficiently, and even with a queue, the wait did not feel excessive. Parking and the surrounding area can also feel a little hectic during peak times, so walking over or visiting during a quieter time can make the experience easier. The train passing by adds a nice sense of place, and the outdoor seating, though limited, gives you a spot to enjoy your treat before heading off. Needham Junction Ice Cream is a fun local spot that delivers exactly what you would expect from a neighborhood ice cream stand. The combination of good portions, fair pricing, and the train station atmosphere makes it a nice summer stop, even if the soft serve options are not as extensive as some other places. It is the kind of place that fits naturally into a warm evening walk or a quick treat after a day out.
