This review is for the breakfast food from the restaurant only, not the bakery goods nor the service from the cashiers. 1 star however for the actual food. I ordered a rice roll (fan tuan), taiwanese burger, Chinese donut, savory soy milk, "green onion and egg quesadilla" (dan bing, why is it called a quesadilla), and two sweet cold soy milk. The sweet soy milk was the only thing that was good. The "quesadilla" was strange - wrapper was dry. It was basically a tortilla with scrambled egg inside. The onions were cut into long slivers.. weird. Didn't come with any sauces, even on the side. Ate half. I threw away most of my order for being inedible. The rice roll was completely soggy. The rice was mushy and it took over 3 bites to get to the actual filling. Thrown away. Taiwanese burger was ok. From what I've had many times before, these burgers include an egg and cucumbers. It had neither. Served with fries, the fries were dry and hard. Ate half of this. Chinese donut was unbelievably greasy. Oil oozed out as I bit down on every bite. Thrown away. Savory soy milk was probably the worse of them all. Over a third of the container was filled with pork sung (pork floss). It was beyond thick and the flavor was just bad. It looked like vomit. Thrown away. I've had good experiences before with other JJ bakery breakfasts. If you're looking for good Taiwanese breakfast, go elsewhere. read more

Personally, I love their cakes better than 85 degrees. Their taro cake is my favorite!!

I love the bakery items and sweets. Top favorites are the sandwiches, opera cake, green tea cake, vanilla strawberry cake, tiramisu, BBQ pork buns, and the coconut danishes. The self serve section adds a measure of safety. They have trays and tongs so you can select your baked goods. Each baked items is inside a plastic bag. The cake slices also have plastic to keep them in place. I do wish social distancing was enforced and I would have felt better if the person picking up my cake slices wore gloves or at least sanitized hands between customers. The pens to sign your credit card are also not sanitized between customers. read more

I grabbed a Danish pastry with cream and strawberry which is both sweet and tart. This is another Taiwanese bakery, but not to be confused with the JJ Bakery stores from the SGV. This is J.J. which is not affiliated with the JJ group. You can actually tell the difference by their products - while there are some similarities, most are very different. We have bought a variety of buns here from time to time and we find their quality quite consistent. Their buns are on the drier side, so some people may not like it. But we like our buns not too greasy and not too buttery and this is just perfect for us. Some of our favorites are pork song buns, mini hot dog croissants, golden horn rolls, among others. Their white toast is also pretty good but they are not as soft as those from the Hong Kong style bakeries, and these are better when toasted. Service is usually good and efficient as they usually have 2 or more people working behind the counter. The staff here is always pleasant and friendly. Prices are comparable to other Asian bakeries in the area. Certainly a bakery that we will buy from again. read more

The whole batch of bakeries i got here goes to trash! All the bread taste old and stale. So disappointed and such a waste of money. Not sure what happen to this bakery, used to be such a good brand bakery. For other customer, better try one first before buying a whole bunch like me that it's ended up in trash can. They have quite a selection of cake slices or whole cakes, amongst other pasties and savoury delights. Price is OK, though possibly a little expensive for some of the cakes. They tend to pile the cakes a bit on top of one another in the box, so if you are taking it as a gift, make sure it's not packed too tightly before you leave. read more

I used to come to this bakery at least once a month with family then we don't come to his plaza as often to eat or buy bakery items. I always loved the different flavor buns here like the chicken tail bun my most favorite. Taro, pineapple, red bean, hot dog and many other buns all very delicious. The cakes, rolls and desserts are not too sweet and taste fresh. Prices are reasonable here if you want good tasting bakery, pastries and cakes. The parking in the plaza on the weekend gets busy with cars driving around finding parking and people walking around. It's less busy and crowded on weekdays or weeknights. JJ is your typical traditional Asian bakery. It's not glammed up like 85 Degrees is, but it's ok if you get used to navigating the space. The bread selection is alright and pricing-wise is slightly cheaper than 85 Degrees. The bakery section of the restaurant is kind of small. However, I love coming to JJ during the Moon Festival time to pick up their green bean with meat moon cakes!!! They probably make one of the best ones that I've had in the U.S. In addition, I used to buy their Mocha Cheesecake for my birthdays. Unfortunately, they stopped making it YEARS ago, but I still remember that the Mocha Cheesecake was the best cheesecake I've had in my life! It was super light and tasty. Their regular cheesecake is pretty decent too. My husband and I decided to bike to JJ when we moved to Orange to justify eating breakfast. We checked out the restaurant-side of the house and the food was decent. The breakfast food was stylized to be more Hong Kong-style. The service was ok and the bathroom was alright. Black sesame, green tea, taro swirled pastries, cheese cake tart, taro danish bun, red bean yolk pastry, taro with bubble, milk tea with bubbles. This place gets 5 Stars for the pastries! They were all amazing!! They lost a star for the taro drink and the so-so bubbles. I'm super picky with my bubbles and these were mushy and didn't have the brown sugar/molasses taste I love in my bubbles... disappointed. The taro was lackluster but at least wasn't artificial. I will definitely be back for the pastries. There were a few things I wanted that had sold out since we went late on a Sunday night, so will be back to try it. There were several people there eating off the menu and might try the food as well. Smelled good. If you want bubble tea I'd suggest going somewhere else though. Because there is no customer service here. Just go in, grab a tray and tongs (I still don't understand the reason for using tongs to pick up packaged food), get your items and pay the first available zombie, I mean "employee". They will wait on you after they manage to pull themselves away from their phones. Other than that, the baked items are ok. There are too many other, better bakeries around. But this place can work in a pinch, or if you are in the area and jonesing for something sweet. read more

This is a decent store from the J.J. Bakery chain. I've been to better (in Whittier) but this one is probably the best in the Irvine area. I really like the delicious little cakes, which are decently priced. For the price, you'll surely be content with the treat you are purchasing. I personally really like the miniature creme brûlée and order a few for take-out whenever I come. Sometimes they sell out of the creme brûlée because I guess they are pretty popular. The staff is friendly, the prices are good, and the treats are pretty decent. In the same store is a little cafe where you can purchase boba tea and sit down to eat your baked goods from J.J.'s. Came here one morning right after going to the gym. Yes I was sweaty but no one else was in the store. I searched for hot dog buns for my little guy and there was none. I contemplated getting something else, but those are the only ones he likes.... hence my asking the woman if they had any. Man was she on the rag or what. Not only did she not look me in the eye while speaking to me, but she intentionally avoided any eye contact and acted like I was troubling her. Gimme a break. There was NO one in the store and I mean NO customer. She couldn't even talk to me nicely. All she did was say 'all out, maybe later' with a sour face. And this isn't even the old lady other yelpers were talking about. This gal was young. I was bummed, but then I noticed she was looking at my tshirt -- okay, yeah it's a yelp tshirt I wear to the gym. Maybe she's pissed off at yelpers for some bad reviews but ya know what -- that kind of attitude just lost you more stars. Not coming back ever to even buy hot dog buns. So rude! I like stopping into JJ Bakery just to kind of take inventory of everything. 9 times out of 10, I won't buy anything, but I just have this thing for bakeries. Like men, they're good to look at and you want to see what's there, but sometimes you just don't want to buy into it. This time, mom saw that their egg tarts were fresh, so she bought a couple for a couple of bucks. They were on the smaller side, but no one should be eating egg that yellow anyway. I picked up a Whole Wheat with Cranberries Bread, which is rather dry and crumbly. They also skimp out on the ingredients too as there isn't a lot of cranberries and it's scattered really unevenly... You know something is amiss when the restaurant is completely empty on a Saturday morning. Everything about it is wrong. The soybean milk comes in a to-go coffee cup. The fried dough is too doughey. The egg that comes with chon-yiu-bin + egg is too thin . . and didn't come until 15 minutes after the soy bean milk . . even though the place was empty. There is a very young cashier and some cooks in the kitchen. You just sense there's no management effort here at all. Basically a whatever attitude and it showed. I won't be coming back. read more

After 4 years of frequenting this shop, we won't be going back. Their level of customer service is none existent toward the customer. The wife had ordered a curry dish that resulted in it being to spicy/peppery to her palate. She inquired for a substitute menu item that wasn't spicy. The counter gal said let me check with my manager/owner. The manager/owner when asked about replacing the dish stated "Couldn't do that, it would be to hard" and would fix the dish so that it wasn't spicy. The attitude to put herself above the customer was shocking. Dining establishments we visit the staff has been able to accommodate and switch the dish out. This shop showed how penny pinching is more important than to maintain a customer long term. Instead the owner goes back into the kitchen to "fix" the meal and returns in about 3 minutes. The curry dish was now a runny soup base with more potatoes. (Meaning instead of making a fresh dish she added water and potatoes.) It was still spicy/peppery for her to eat. We relayed to the counter gal and she apologized. We get stuck with an inedible meal while the owner/manager disappears rather than inquire if the meal was satisfactory. This manager/owner was the same crusty lady who would haphazardly smash the baked goods into the box rather than neatly place them in in an organized manner on past visits. In the years we'd been coming in we've seen the changes and yet it was a tolerable place to get simple eats. My sausage fired rice usually had more veggies in the mix. This time there was a small sprinkling of carrots, peas and onions. Far from what most fried rice dishes combine as ingredients. (Can we say more penny pinching measures.) To receive this level of service was obvious how they viewed us as customers. With the increased prices and poor customer service, we will pursue other shops that treat their customers properly. The shop may have a cumulative $30 this time and it was the last from our wallets. Goodbye! read more

Although my friend highly recommends some dishes, I wouldn't come back to give them another try, at least in weeks. I ordered fried pork chop rice, coming with free iced black tea. First of all, the portion is small comparing to Kingchop, one of my favorite Taiwanese restaurant. The taste is just fine. With $8.95, based on the portion and taste, it's not really worth it. Visited the store today 7/3/2022. My mother went to the store to pick up some bread for her grandchildren. She went inside and was met with unfriendly service and prejudice...she used English and Chinese to ask for help regarding allergens in the bread since her youngest granddaughter has an egg allergy and the lady purposely spoke only English to her and kept saying she doesn't understand my mom ... My mom then tried her best to use her knowledge of English to finish buying the breads but the cashier (same person who "helped" her) then turned around to the kitchen and used CHINESE to ask for change to break the $100 bill my mother was using to pay for the bread. It is unnecessary for the employee to be so harsh on anyone especially someone who is purely just asking for help regarding an allergen. If she could not "speak" Chinese she could have had the decency to tell her she could not be helped. As a patron and as a local who has gone and shopped at the location many years it's very unsettling to see such behavior. Being racist and not accommodating or even not accepting to help others is what we experienced at the store. Be careful when visiting this store. Not only are they prejudice towards their patrons, but they are very very unwelcoming towards people who have allergies. read more

I've been to JJ Bakery a few time for their pastries and desserts. They have a pretty good selection that isn't expensive and you won't have to wait in any crazy line like you would at 85C. The boyfriend took me to the cafe part today to eat. It was my first time coming to JJ Bakery to get real food instead of bread. I got one of the fried rice dishes and he got one of the combos, herb salted chicken. For a dollar extra, you get a tea drink with your meal. I got thai tea. They were pretty good deals, and I don't know if it was because I was starving and it was my first meal of the day, but my fried rice tasted BOMB. and so did boyfriend's chicken and rice with shredded pork. This might be a little biased but I really liked this place especially because it reminds me of home in the san gabriel valley. We really like the cream corn soup from the cafe at J.J. Bakery. During this shutdown, I went in once to get it but they didn't have it at that time. But for several years, that particular soup has been a favorite. Lots of nice baked goods. Sometimes the staff is nice, sometimes gruff. Just depends on who is working there at the moment. Their bakery breads aren't as fresh and good-tasting as 85 degrees but I do enjoy the cakes here more than 85 degrees. I enjoy Asian cakes because they're lighter and not as sweet as American cakes. My low review is for their poor and very unprofessional customer service. Upon entering the bakery, there were no other customers in there. A lady behind the counter looked at us as we entered and as I walked up to the counter. She made eye contact but did not greet us or let us know that she/someone else would help us out. She just looked at us and walked back to the kitchen a minute later as if we were invisible. I didn't realize until she left that there were 2 other employees sitting at the cash register only a few feet away. They too did not acknowledge us or offer us any help. I had to walk up to them to get their attention. It was hard to see them behind the counter because they were sitting on low stools, playing on their phones. They each had on a headphone on and were on their phones watching a show. When I told them that I wanted to order a cake, the lady sitting directly behind the register looked annoyed that I was disturbing her from her show. No "hello" or "how can I help you." She just said, "which one?". I told her the cake I wanted and paid her $31. I asked her if she could write Happy Birthday on the cake and she told me that they don't do that and they only have a tiny plastic sign that says Happy Birthday. Not a big deal but annoying since almost all other bakeries are willing to write a note for you on their cakes. With her headphones still on and not moving her butt off the chair, she tells the employee next to her to go get us the cake. Looking back, I wish that I would have just walked out the door and spent my money elsewhere. The service is a 0 star but my additional star is for their cakes which do actually taste good. However with this horrible experience, I don't think I'll be back. I'm sticking with Paris Baguette, Sunmerry or 85 degrees in the future. read more
