We had lived in the same house for over 30 years, and I had a fair amount of anxiety about finding a good mover, as I had heard many stories of movers damaging walls/flooring, breaking furniture, or even not showing up on the scheduled day. I interviewed three companies, and Ladd was my first choice, handling our move to Durham from our old home, which was about 1.5 hours away. We were extremely pleased with their service! Our first contact was with Cameron, who was very helpful in offering packing suggestions and ways to cut the cost of the move. I never got the impression that they were just trying to make a quick buck; instead, they were very focused on providing a quality service. On the day of the move, Jay Ladd and his team of three additional men showed up within 5 minutes of their eta, which I found pretty amazing. They asked us to give them a walk through of the house, verifying which items were going on the truck, asking questions about any special care required, and looking for the best route to take out each item. They got to work immediately, and kept up an amazing pace, all while taking great care of each item. They obviously work well together, as they had a good system for handling everything, including guiding each other through tight spots. Except for taking breaks of just a few seconds to get sips of water, they worked nonstop until the job was done - clearing out and loading our ~2000 square foot home in about 2.5 hours, with nothing broken and no damage to the house or our household furniture and goods. They did exactly the same at our new home, asking where we wanted every item placed (and asking again, before leaving, if they could move anything for us), and no damage at all to our brand new home's flooring, walls, etc. They were polite, friendly, respectful, hard working and professional. I could not possibly imagine a better move! Their price, by the way, was the lowest of the three estimates, and they ended up charging me less than the estimate because the load was a little less than estimated. I tipped them all, by the way, and I think they earned it! Highly recommend. read more

Summary: Professional, efficient, worry free and friendly Details: J.E. Ladd moves me out of a 4300 square foot house. I'm very hesitate to every use movers. Prior to this I had only had two experiences with movers and they weren't very pleasant. Due to suffering an injury I was not able to move my family myself and I turned to J.E. Ladd. J.E. Ladd moved my house in two moves. The first move was the larger furniture pieces into storage PODs. The second move was into an apartment. Each time a lead from the group was present and reassuring how they were packing and moving the items. Having moved many times before myself as my own moving coordinator, I listened to their reasoning and it was what I would have done to move myself. It was strange to be able to sit back, watch the guys do their job and feel like I had no worries about broken furniture, banged up walls, theft etc.... During the second move one of the leads even let us borrow some of his furniture pads so we wouldn't have to pay a monthly fee for them. The group looked for opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce the hours they worked so that we weren't charged more. They do everything, packing, furniture disassembly etc... A great group and a great experience. If you're looking for a worry free move use J.E. la Part 2 the move out of our apartment and into our new house. January 26-27 2020: Again these fellas were spot on! Courteous and ensuring the care of the possessions as they moved them. Took heavy loads up down and up stairs in the house and never left a mark on the walls or the floor. When taking our dining room table out of our apartment we realized due to my negligence in how I stored the table it had a scratch on it. Jay actually paid his own money out of his pocket to get the table fixed by a highly trained furniture restoration person. This put my wife at ease as the dining table is a big deal to her. Hands down these are the best movers in the Raleigh Durham area! read more

I am completely impressed with this moving company! I'm an attention-to-detail person and rarely find a vendor or tradesman who operates that same way, but J.E. Ladd and Son Transfer company amazed me. Our move was in mid-June 2018, a busy time for movers, but the whole team made me feel like Customer Number One, from Cameron, who provided the quotes, to the owner, "Jay" Ladd, to the moving team: Jacob, Dave, and Tony. (Jay was hands-on with the actual move as well.) Many thanks to all of you. The team took great care with every single piece of furniture, and they were particularly mindful of antiques and pieces with delicate finishings. Every item was inspected in my presence before loading it onto to the truck, and every item was reinspected upon delivery. The movers were careful of floors, door jambs, foyer lights, and even shrubbery along the drive. They did a final walk-through to make sure each item was placed exactly where I wanted it. Great communication, pleasant interactions, promptness, and expert care, all at a reasonable price that matched the quoted range. I could not have asked for more. I highly recommend this moving company! read more

Having been compelled to redo our entire first floor hardwood floors (@2,200 sq. ft.) due to a water leak, we had to essentially move all of our belongings out of the house - all furniture, rugs, wall hangings, paintings, photographs, mirrors, a wealth of decorative items, as well as all kitchen articles and dishes. While I can't say this was pleasant, the guys from J.E. Ladd made it as palatable as humanly possible, all the while offering moral support and the assurance that everything would be replaced intact. They made good their assurances 100% and amazed us as to how they kept track of each and every item, no matter how small, so that all were replaced in the same condition in the exact same locale. They were truly amazing and performed all of their services in a warm and friendly manner exhibited by absolute dedication to their customers needs and a level of professionalism seldom found these days. I highly recommend them without any hesitation whatsoever! Many thanks guys!! read more

Jay and his crew moved us into our new house in April, and they did an excellent job. It was clear that they knew what they were doing. Our new house was new construction, and the closing date got moved out to a later date. Jay was very flexible and understanding, which we greatly appreciated. He also helped us secure storage for our things with Triangle Mobile Storage because we weren't able to change the closing date on our old house, and we were "homeless" for about a week and a half. The final price was slightly higher than originally quoted, but it was completely understandable since they ended up having to make two trips out rather than all on one day as originally planned - and I felt it was still very reasonable. They made moving less stressful, and I would highly recommend them to anyone! read more

Great movers, fair price. They were able to squeeze us in during the busiest month for movers. Prior to the move, I had a facetime walkthrough of my home with Cameron, who gave me a quote that I thought was more than fair. When moving day came, the crew showed up promptly, and packed up the house very quickly. We were only moving down the street, so they decided to make 2 trips instead of trying to pack the truck too tightly. Once at the new house, they swiftly unpacked, re-assembled furniture, and were done quickly. Overall a very courteous and professional crew, and I would definitely use these guys again if I needed to move. read more

Based on Yelp reviews, I picked J.E. Ladd to load the truck my husband and I would be driving for our out-of-state move. My experience pre-move in communicating with Cameron was very good. He was responsive, answered all my questions, and provided a clear estimate. Our movers were fantastic! In the course of moving, I've lost their names, but they were prompt, super professional, and did a great job packing the truck. We reached the other end of the country with zero damage on our items. And, they kept the time to Cameron's estimate. I would recommend them to anyone moving in the area. read more

I recently moved from Chapel Hill to Greenville and cannot rave enough about how great JE Ladd was. They were extremely punctual, showed up 5 minutes before the scheduled move time and made quick work out of moving my stuff out. My movers were polite, funny, and professional. Not to mention they never once complained despite temperatures in the upper 90s. Once at my new apartment they helped set up my washer/dryer and assemble a table. Everything arrived in perfect condition, nothing broken, scratched, etc. Overall a wonderful experience I would definitely hire them again for a move! read more

So glad I chose JE Ladd & Son for my move! Tony, Dave and Steve were exceptional! I was told they would take great care of me and that they did. They charge by the hour but still got in, got it done and got out in record time (not to mention they loaded in Durham, delivered part of it to a storage bldg in Carey and the remainder to my new place in Chapel Hill). PLUS, they were the most economical of the movers that I had received quotes from. Hi HIGHLY recommend these guys. Like I said, they are AWESOME! read more

I cannot tell you how painless Jay and his crew made this move. The were so professional, moved everything with care and concern, just an unbelievably wonderful experience! Moving is so stressful but they did everything possible to make this less so. They even put together 2 new beds for me, hugely helpful. They were very reasonably priced so I could not be happier. I choose them based on these reviews and made the smartest decision. Thank you Jay, Cameron and crew, will recommend you to anyone that asks. read more

I had a local move that only took a couple hours, but involved several heavy furniture pieces and lots of heavy boxes. My movers, Dave and Jacob, were very quick about it. They were not only fast, but considerate, asking questions about what they needed to move and where it needed to go. Thanks to some upstairs construction, some things had to be stored temporarily in the garage, and when they can go to the second floor, I'm definitely planning to hire them again to help that happen. read more

I never knew moving could be so painless! Scheduling with J.E. Ladd was incredibly easy and the crew showed up exactly on time. Jacob and Dave were incredibly efficient and moved all of our stuff FAST! They were very careful with our furniture and offered to put things exactly where we wanted them, even if it meant moving things for a second time. So glad I trusted the Yelp reviews-- we'll be moving again soon and I will definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone! read more

We used Ladd 10 years ago and were beyond impressed with their great service and communication, and care. When moving now, there was no doubt we would use them again, and received amazing service again-it was even the same employees 10 years later! They are the best movers we've ever seen. They are communicative, flexible, professional, and the employees are friendly and so professional. Use them for your move...you won't be sorry! read more

I moved on 5/27/16. The move was seamless because of the Cameron and Ryan. I will recommend them to any family members or friends that are moving in the state. I've dealt with other moving companies where the movers would take a number of bathroom breaks to pad their times. The guys with JE Ladd & Son worked efficiently and took great care in moving my belongings. Thank you guys so much for your hard work. read more

This is an update on J. E. Ladd & Son. JE Ladd V followed up with me directly with apologies and service recovery. Most importantly, in my view, he reported on their analysis of what went wrong and what they will do in future to prevent it. I would have no hesitation to do business with them in the future. My preference is always to support local business, and they have been around for more than a century. read more

True professionals! I've used Ladd & Son for two moves and I've been extremely impressed with their knowledge and concern for the safety of our "stuff!" The moves were smooth, efficient, not one broken item and with a reasonable price. You can tell they focus on customer service from start to finish and that made me feel very comfortable. I'll definitely use this service for my next move! read more

Requested quote for moving after seeing so many good reviews. Received an email response with a rough estimate and some questions to better firm up the quote. When I called Cameron his VM said you will get a faster response with a text. Since I was driving and spend a lot of time driving I left a voice message instead of texting. That was 7 days ago and no response. I'm looking elsewhere. read more

Outstanding service. The scheduling process was thorough and well explained. The movers were on time, professional, did a walk through to establish what was moving, and they worked SO fast! Moving into the new place was the same, asked where I wanted everything, and unloaded the truck in no time. Highly recommend this company. Jacob and David (Daniel?) were awesome. read more
