While one of the larger J.Crew stores in NYC, in my experience, it consistently has the worst customer service. I find it more egregious because this is usually encountered with their "management" personnel and typically not the sales associates on the floor. I know it's thankless working retail but take some more executive training and learn to treat your customers better because I would rather pay more to be treated better. read more

I'm scrambling for the right attire for a wedding that I'm going to this weekend. After hopping to two different J Crews, I landed at the Fifth Ave location. The Men's Shop on Bowery and J Crew on SOHO had limited options for clothing. The Fifth Ave location is a giant store with three different levels; the third level being a Men's Shop. I had to come back two times to nail down the style for the wedding. Kevin was fantastic in both those times, helping me with questions and trying on a million different things. Really appreciated this level of service and friendliness. I recently had an excellent experience at J. Crew in the Flatiron district on Fifth Avenue, specifically with Alan in the elegant third-floor Menswear department. It was Wednesday afternoon and I needed a birthday gift for Sunday. I had seen a beautiful shawl-collar sweater online at a discounted price and I wanted to see it in person before I purchased it as a gift for my husband. Unfortunately they didn't have the sweater in stock -- it seems it was an online special -- and salesperson Alan, who was assisting me, offered to have it shipped directly to me at no charge and promised I'd have it no later than Saturday. I agreed, and the sweater was delivered directly to my door on Friday afternoon! The sweater is lovely, fits perfectly, and I especially appreciated that while there was a J. Crew tag, there was nothing attached stating the price (which I would have had to stealthily remove) as it was a gift. Thank you Alan and J. As far as I'm aware, this is one of the larger jcrews out there: so chances are the item I want to try on will be available. In terms of service, I have mixed experiences. I've been shopping at this particular Jcrew for almost a decade and it'll range from eager to help to more recently, an elitist demeanor. Most notably, this time last year before the lockdown, an employee was lingering around me as if anticipating me to steal. Most recently, I asked for an item that I described as "five pocket". "Five pocket" just means the pockets are like jeans. The employee I asked started counting the pockets on these chinos and there were five but that's not what the styling refers to. Fine, it's an honest mistake... although he works at a clothing store. I literally show him the item I want ON MY PHONE. And he asks another colleague for them and she says those are it and he repeats that those are it, while staring at me antagonistically. I should've at that point pointed to my phone and tell him if those looked the same. Then he walks me to the fitting room like a child. Jcrew's been going bankrupt for awhile and this is a clear indication why. I like your shirts but it's not worth the hassle. read more

I saw a beautiful Cardigan at the Columbus Circle location and I knew that I needed it. I didn't buy it, and I instantly regretted it and continued to think about that cardigan the whole day. I was in this neighborhood a couple of days later and had to go in and see if this location had the cardigan I dreamed of. They did! And I knew it was now or never or I would never see that cardigan again. I was so happy they had it and I made sure I bought it! The quality of the clothes here is just immaculate! I hate that a lot of the stores are shutting down. I went Christmas shopping in this store. They sell punch provisions and other fun stuff not just quality clothes. Excellent service no pushy sales people here harassing you every 5 mins asking you if you need anything. Didn't feel rushed or followed around or harassed here. read more

They have given up on the men's business. The men's section is on the third floor through a side door on the first floor. In order to get there, you have to take the slowest elevator in existence. Which often doesn't work. So you have to walk to the back of the store through the women's section, up the staircase, through the baby section, up another staircase, before you get to the men's section. This is not a new phenomenon, it's been this way for years. Once you're there, the selection is feeble and feels like an outlet. Or maybe the clothes are just out of style now. I visited this J Crew specifically for their bridesmaids dresses. The bride wanted me to check on colors and fit and see if it would be an appropriate choice for her bridal party. Lucky for me, they had an appointment free that afternoon. There are only a handful of J Crew Bridal Salons and this is the only location in NYC. The bridal salon is on the right side of the store and you need to be escorted in - you can't just pop in. The space is TINY. The "salon" consists of three fitting rooms and a couch. The saleswomen will hand you a cold Perrier, but that's about the extent of the white glove service. The fitting rooms are a little dark and the carpet is worn. J Crew offers about 30 bridesmaids dresses, of which they only carry a few sizes and colors, so don't expect to see your exact dress here. If you're petite or plus, good luck and Godspeed. The dresses are not on display - the sales clerk will pull them for you based on what you're looking for. My sales clerk was super cute and friendly and pulled about six dresses for me to review. Most of the dresses looked just as they do on the site and I do like their chiffon and how its textured. But some of sample dresses were in terrible shape - falling apart terrible. Then some of their dresses and sizes were backordered - to the point where they didn't have an estimated ship date at all. While I like the dresses (you can totally wear them again), the high price point of the dress compared to the meh experience of seeing the dresses and fittings made this an A-Okay option for bridesmaid gowns. read more

I had to make a pretty specific, last-minute purchase for an outfit for my law firm's holiday party. There was one dress in particular I was hoping to get but I saw online that it was running low in stock. I made a call to the 5th Ave store and was *so* fortunate that a sales associate named Satouri answered the phone. She was so pleasant to speak with and she was very committed to helping me get what I needed. She made sure to set aside the dress in a size small when I asked. I also mentioned that I was nervous about getting a small because I am normally a size medium but the website said mediums were out of stock . Without my even having to ask, Satouri checked and saw that there happened to be a few more mediums in store and set one aside. When I arrived she was very prompt to attend to me and she had the dresses at the ready! The whole process was so smooth and efficient. I couldn't have asked for a better shopping experience. Satouri is such an excellent employee. I hope the management at J.Crew recognizes how fortunate they are to have her. I will absolutely be returning to this location! read more

The staff at this location are all super friendly and ready to help you. I don't know if my style is changing lately or if it's JCrew, but I couldn't find anything when I visited last weekend to add some items to my work ensemble. I was looking for a dark navy suit skirt, but they didn't have any. They only had one type of black blazer in store. I felt like there wasn't enough variety...I'm sure there's more stuff online. Sigh, I used to go to JCrew and leave with at least a few items, but haven't been having much success lately. I never write reviews but I was so upset this afternoon I decided that it was definitely worth mentioning. I've never been in a J Crew store before but I have made online purchases and they're things are good quality. Today while looking for a winter coat and some pretty dresses for my daughter for the upcoming holiday season I wandered into this store. No one greeted me when I walked in but I waved it off. I had to find my way to the kids section and when I tried to ask a sales associate about the sizing for the coats she ignored me and proceeded to help someone else. I was like wow she could have at least asked me to give her a minute or acknowledged that I had said something to her. They had really cute things that I would have definitely loved to purchase but the customer service was so bad I decided not to spend my money there. I've heard of stores here who cater to a certain look or type but never experienced it personally. I've never felt like I didn't belong in a store in my own city, not even on the other end of 5th Ave or Madison where the designer stores are famous for racial profiling. Back in my Catholic College-Prep high school days (no, I'm not fucking Catholic), all the middle-class white preppies LOVED them some Gap. I mean, the way they talked about their Gap purchases, it seemed like The Gap gave them cunnilingus/fellatio, free term papers, and an allowance. It grew to hate The Gap and no matter how many sexy men they put in their ad campaigns (most notably, my lover Raoul Bova), a stigma follows them where you won't EVER find me shopping there for myself. With that said, I am not totally against the "preppy" look--if that's what it is, just a look. Enter J. Crew. Back in high school, the only thing I really knew about J. Crew was that they had hot guys in their catalogues, and that the price range was far beyond what the parentals would spend on me, but I was still in my grunge-lite phase anyway, so I didn't give much of a fuck over J Crew. But that of course all changed when I discovered fashion my freshman and sophomore years at NYU: my initial forays into Todd Oldham, Liz Claiborne, DKNY, etc. etc. The wardrobe was expanding and I was starting to try other looks. And for a certain style, I was starting to hit J Crew more and more often. Now this J Crew location is quite nice. Sales staff is very friendly and well-dressed (which is SUCH a good sign if they are going to attempt to wardrobe you). The door security doesn't allow poor people in (just kidding). The store is clean and so is the bathroom (important to note!!!). So if you're looking for that perfect washed cotton shirt in a gingham cheque or SUPER soft Italian cashmere sweater (my sweater gets molested constantly because it's so soft), this is a great J. With most of my J.Crew shopping hours logged in malls, shopping in this one gave me that tiny-goldfish-in-a-giant-lake feeling. A huge breath of perfectly tailored air. Three glorious floors of preppy, neat, colorful, lustworthy clothing, in a bright and airy space. Yes, their clothes are expensive, but seriously? You knew that before you walked in. And that's what the sale section is for! This store's sale section, on the first floor, doesn't disappoint. It's pretty sizeable, with enough markdowns to allow you to fill your closet without taking out a second mortgage. (Or, if you're in school, get on that student discount!) This place is filled with high-quality, durable, beautiful clothing, in all colors of the rainbow. If it was convenient to me, I'd shop here all the time. THIS IS IMPORTANT: THIS IS J. Crew bridal. Right here. It's not up on 66th street, no matter what your google maps is telling you. Save yourself a cab fare. Also, this review is only for the bridal salon, and this is my first time making an appointment to try on dresses, so that might skew things. However, I HAVE watched like seventy episodes of Say Yes To The Dress, which I definitely accidentally admitted to Iyesha (I really hope I'm getting her name right), the consultant helping me out, so I'm pretty much an expert at all things bridal. Just kidding. So obviously we went to the wrong location first, and ended up catching a cab to the correct location, arriving mere seconds before my appointment was scheduled to start. Luckily, nobody seemed miffed, so we headed right into the dressing rooms. Things were laid-back, not super pristine, but comfortable. Although it is on the main floor of the store, the dressing rooms are curtained off and feel very private. There was a couch for my wonderful future MIL. Iyesha asked what I wanted to see, I told her a few of the dresses that had caught my eye, and she went off in search of them. When one of them was from last season, she even did a little bit of extra digging to find it. She was very helpful when I needed help getting into and out of the dresses, and let me form my own opinions about what I liked. Some of the dresses were in not-great shape, but they're samples, so I get it. The dressing room itself wasn't the fanciest, and also not the cleanest. However, there was no pressure to buy a dress RIGHT NOW, and Iyesha gave me her card (which I promptly lost, go me) and the names of the dresses I liked, along with prices. I was really glad that I booked the appointment, because the dresses that I thought I liked looked TERRIBLE on me. Conversely, some dresses that looked bland online were actually very flattering in person. I would definitely recommend checking out this boutique, especially if you're a fan of J. Terrible experience, shopping for a tux. Cheryl was rude, lacked knowledge and turned me off to shopping here. I didn't care if I had to wait, it was the fact that every question was met with a hostile response. Im 6 foot and was given short jackets. My fiance asked about ordering online and got scoffed at and when she asked why not Cheryl had no answer and snapped back at her about always having to fix problems. I asked on the way out about the right size pants and said I needed the 32 length (tried on 30) and she said no, 32x32 in the most brusque manner. Terrible experience. I thought this might become a problem, but I was paired up with Stacey shortly after arriving. She was very easy going, pulled a variety of colors, fabrics, and styles for me to try. It had been a while since I shopped with J.Crew and I couldn't remember my sizes. Stacey was pretty spot on with finding what would fit. What made me feel extra special? It turned out that Stacey was very familiar with the non-profit I work for and had volunteered with us when she was in high school. J.Crew makes my inner prep heart beat a little bit faster. I remember in college how my roomie and I would be so excited to go through the latest catalogue then just die for wanting to graduate, get big girl jobs, and be able to shop to our heart's content. Well, the big girl job has come but unfortunately in the most expensive city in the world. It's ok, I can shop to a fraction of my heart's content for now. One of the things I love about J Crew is the ability to find clothing that's colorful, sophisticated, sexy, and work appropriate all with the ability to go from office to drinks or dinner. I like to stand out a bit and wearing black and gray pencil skirts gets boring. Their pencil skirts come in so many different colors. I just purchased this absolutely gorgeous blue dress that hits in all the right places in a classy way. The girl who helped me at this location was amazing, giving me great recommendations, quickly grabbing sizes, and all with a smile on her face. Even though that's expected of someone in the retail industry it's not always the case in this city. The quality of J Crew clothing in undeniable and I gladly hand over my card since I know each purchase will be a lasting one and money well spent. read more

Gah! When did Jcrew get so outrageously expensive?? Rumor is that Jcrew uses the same manufacturer as the big designers and so their prices have jumped as a result. You can, however, always count on quality at Jcrew. Also, they are one of the few retailers that don't see winter as a cue to cut all colors out of the line. Instead, they keep bright pinks, yellows, green, purples in their winter collections which is so refreshing. In shopping for a wedding dress, I enjoyed my simple, no-frills experience here. - Appointment needed: yes - Photos allowed: yes - Return/exchange policy: same as for regular J Crew items (!), which is very lenient compared to most bridal salons' no-return/exchange or non-refundable-deposit policies. After checking in for the appointment, my consultant Kat brought out the sample dress I mentioned on the phone I was interested in. Unfortunately it was only in size 8, and yes there were wears & tears. But Kat offered me size 0 and 2 in a couple of other styles so she could get a sense of my real size. She pinned me, took photos, and all in all made herself available without pressuring me into anything. I absolutely loved my dress, so Kat offered to help me make the purchase right then. But she also informed me that a petite line may be coming out later this year. So I walked away without committing to anything, and enjoyed browsing through the well laid out 2-story store while at it. I came here for a bridal appointment and had a very mixed experience. The staff was really nice, especially the consultant who pulled out dresses, wrapped me in sashes and jewelry, and zipped me up at least 5 or 6 times. However, the rude family who had the appointment before mine made this stop on my wedding-dress-try-on-day a little less wonderful than the other stops. It's not the stores fault really, although a tiny bit more kicking-out action on their part would have been really appreciated. My appointment was at 1pm and we waited 10 minutes or so, not a huge deal, but when we DID get taken back into the bridal room, the other family was sprawled out ALL over the place. They were loud, messy, and wayyyyy over the guest limit. We felt awkward, huddled in a corner, being looked at by them like WE were the intruders. Again, not the stores fault 100%, but a little "Ok, your time is over and we have another appointment, I'm really sorry" would have been awesome. Anyway, once they finally got their annoying butts out of there, this was possibly my FAVORITE dress shop! There was space, privacy, and most importantly, beautiful dresses with the perfect mix of structure and flow. And again, I had a really really really nice consultant. Plus there was a comfy couch for my guests to sit on while I got changed. If I do not get my dress here, I will probably at least get the pretty sash I tried on. This review is for the bridal suite. THE CONSULTANTS ARE AMAZING! I went here for two appointments for my bridal party. 1. My bridesmaids and I booked a Saturday afternoon appointment a few weeks in advance. There was a limited selection, but the consultants really took the time to explain your options with the different styles and fabrics. There was absolutely no pressure to buy or rush through the dresses. We were allowed to take our time and re-try on the options we wanted. We found the perfect dress. 2. My 5 year old flower girl came with me to pick out her dress. The consultants took their time with her, let her twirl around the (empty) bridal suite and even started a little dance party with her (and of course we all joined in)! She felt like a million bucks and it's an experience I'll never forget. The dresses came in very quickly and the ongoing customer service is fantastic. My mistake was finding my dress before going to J. Crew. I'd recommend this J. Crew Bridal location to absolutely everyone. read more

I am a HUGE fan of J. Crew. Granted, they have become on the expensive side but I have come to the conclusion that if you're willing to spend a little bit more money on quality clothing, it can go a long way. I've been buying J. Crew since 2006 and they had that spectacular catalog dedicated to Scotland and they had beautiful coats in red, blue, and black and over the years, they had some wonderful accessories such as fuschia leather gloves, one of a kind sweaters and shoes. I come here time and again because it's a bitch to find clothes that fit my petite frame. When I mean by petite, I have big girl boobs but on the short side - around 5'0 feet. I spent countless of dollars altering pants and suit jackets that I had my tailor recommend to just have my clothes custom made because the alterations end up being the same cost of a suit that I buy on sale. Anyway, I had a wedding to attend and had to make reservations for a fitting for dresses I saw online. The first time I went, I had a rep, Elizabeth who was extremely helpful with the dresses I picked out and we went over colors and fabrics and alteration discussions. She gave me a card that provided alterations in the Soho area and recommended I call around to determine the best prices for the dresses. I had a bunch of dresses I had in mind for that day and unfortunately, I told her I wasn't ready to buy may come back if the dresses I had in Bloomingdales, Zara and Lord and Taylor didn't work out. I came back two weeks later and worked with another rep, Jenny, since a new catalog came out with the fall wedding bridesmaid dresses and tried on a few more along with her recommendations for shoes and accessories. She helped me out with shipping and again with alterations. I received the dress in two days which was a one shoulder cobalt blue in silk chiffon and was pleased that the dress fit perfectly! I didn't have to do any alterations with the length as Jenny explained it hit right at the knee for my height and the bustline didn't need any tapering. I will keep coming back to J. Crew as long as they keep creating quality clothing. I have bought 3 coats over the past 3 years - a blue puffer coat for activewear, a cobalt blue lady coat for work, and a white and black piping peacoat for weekend wear, all in petite sizes and all have received compliments for all sorts of people. read more

This is the NYC location I frequent the most, as it's blocks from my work place. It's way too easy to take a quick stroll over to Fifth Avenue when I take a break for lunch. Great sales, but it's always crowded. I highly encourage you to cross over to the dark side and drop the flannel and pick up the madras. read more

In the interest of full disclosure: I am officially obsessed with J.Crew. Everything about the brand (and, obviously, its clothing line) makes me happy inside and well-kept on the outside. I may be biased because this J.Crew is the one nearest my house, but it's my favorite in the city for the following three reasons: 1) Jina, a salesperson and personal shopper, is God's gift to all who are lucky enough to walk in during her shift. I liken her to a real-life Heidi Klum: tall, blonde, gorgeous, of undisclosed Eastern European descent, and always well-dressed. She's SO helpful and accomodating... I sometimes stop by the store just to say hello to her. 2) The store is really nicely laid out: the ceilings are high, the displays don't feel too crowded, you hardly ever have to wait for a dressing room. And they always seem to have additional stock in the back somewhere--they've never been out of a size I'm looking for. 3) The stock changes at the perfect rate: they keep more "standard" pieces around for a bit longer and change the more fashion-forward pieces at a quicker rate. In other words: There's always fresh merch when I stop in (which is pretty often), but the favorites I keep on the back burner, debating whether or not to buy, are still available. read more

Stop 3 on the J Crew MH Tour: Union Square store. A quick hop onto the NQR gets you to 14 St Union Square. Man this J Crew was huge! 3 whole stories with the most diverse selection and offerings. I was impressed! First 2 floors are for womens and kids, with the 3rd floor exclusively for men's. Sale Section: Exists! It's in the back near the Ludlow/dressing room area. Someone asked if I needed any help and they directed me towards a personal shopper. He was great, however the outfits he brought to me were not that great. I did end up buying one, however when I got home my friends and family thought it was not very appealing. I will be returning it tomorrow. 3 stars for the great customer service and effort! read more
