This establishment is horrible. I was treated extremely poorly (outside of help from Nancy and Emma). I came into the store on Tuesday, July 13 in the afternoon to do some summer trip shopping. Immediately upon entrance I am followed (check the cameras!) incessantly by one employee, while other employees quite literally ignore me. One even bumped into me without apology or greeting. Nancy was the first employee to make eye-contact and ask me if I needed any help (I did, I had an armful of clothes I wanted to try on). At some point during my time in the dressing room, Nancy went to take a break. The person who took over for her (brown haired in a paisley red dress wearing boots, turquoise nail polish, who also happened to be the person who bumped into me without acknowledgement-- CHECK THE CAMERAS) was nasty and rude with me-- even after I made it clear that my intention was to buy items (do other customers have to do this to receive good customer service?). I came out of a the dressing room asking for help with sizes (since my call for help from my dressing room was ignored). As I am asking for help from this new person (who does not introduce herself or respond to me when I ask her name), she wrinkles her nose at me, proceeds to CUT ME OFF as I'm talking to help another customer who just showed up to the dressing room. I was literally mid-sentence. No, "could you hold on for one second" or anything from her. She proceeds to help several other customers (no problem at all!! Things get busy. Maybe just let ME know, as I was the one you were helping first!). FINALLY, she come back to me and asks me - quite rudely- if I "actually" plan to buy anything. I'm confused by this, as I started our initial dialogue with "I'm planning to buy all of these items. I would like to check sizes in these items or see if they're in another store for purchase," but no problem things are busy. But also, is it appropriate for a sales associate to ask a customer that? At some point, one of the garments I'm planning to purchase slips to the ground. I'm standing right next to the associate, who makes no attempt to help me. She literally stands and stares at the garment on the ground. I'm baffled by this. I have to ask her, "can you please help me? Do you mind grabbing that please?" In an incredibly dismissive tone she says, "Oh, sure. I guess." I ask this associate if she would be comfortable with me laying out my "definitely purchase" items on the empty clothes rack while she communicates with another associate about the items I'd like sizes on. She grants me her permission. Another customer she helped earlier comes over and physically removes my clothing (some even falling to the ground) to place her rejects on the rack. The associate sees this but says nothing, and again does not offer to help me pick up the items. Many people are passing through the narrow dressing room entrance space. The associate is protected from this because of a small enclave for employees down there. A customer pushed me and I stumbled into this enclave (no apology from this other customer...different from the customer who threw my clothes on the ground). The associate looked at me in complete disgust and said "you need to back up." I'm mortified, and apologize profusely. I didn't mean to make her uncomfortable by any means, but also I had just been physically pushed by another customer into her space? The level of aggression I received as a masked (and vaccinated customer--though she didn't know that) was extremely alienating (on top of an already alienating experience). Finally, I received confirmation that the sizes I was looking for were not available. No problem. I take the pile of clothes I am planning to buy upstairs. I'm greeted by Emma who seemed very nice. She took my clothes to the register so that I could look around one more time before finalizing my purchase. I found a pair of super cute sunglasses and was ready to check out. When passing the shoe rack, I saw some shoes I was interested in and asked if I could see them. Emma went to grab them. I do not know the name of the woman who checked me out, she was a blonde woman wearing a white tank top with yellow overalls (shorts) rolled down to her hips. This woman was also dismissive of me (even though I was getting ready to check out!). She did call down to Emma about the shoes, which is helpful, but also a part of her job. After she rings up my items, I see that the sunglasses I picked out were likely not ringed up. I asked her if she rang them up and in surprise she said "Oh, no I didn't! I'll do that now" (it genuinely felt like she was trying to test me to see if I would take the glasses without paying for them). Saved up enough to finally shop them online,but was very disappointed that I never got my stuff. Apparently they use lasership who claimed that they delivered when it fact they never did two weeks in a row same problem...how is that even possible. Not planning on ordering again as I'm afraid the same issue will happen again with the lasership company they use. I got a refund on the first package, waiting on update for second package. So someone somewhere got my goods for free...I guess you guys are ok giving away free/lost merchandise by continuing to use lasership. read more

Super upset. The salespeople threw away or stole my pants. I bought a dress at Free People earlier this week. I was heading to a workout class from work, so I had my work clothes in my bag. At the sales counter, I removed my jeans to dig for my wallet and accidentally left them on the counter. I came back the next day. Luckily the woman who rang me up was there. I explained that I must have left my jeans there by accident... "Oh yeah. They were on the counter this morning. We thought they were damaged goods and we threw them away." These were expensive jeans from a different brand and clearly worn. Obviously, they had to be left by a customer. Random pants just don't appear. The saleswoman looked in the trash while I waited but had no luck. She said she'd ask the other saleswomen if they knew what happened to them. I gave her my phone number and requested she follow up either way, so I knew whether I needed to get new jeans. She never called. Shouldn't there be a policy to hold onto Lost and Found items for at least 24 hours? What's worse was that I was made to feel like my jeans were crap, damaged, disgusting. After buying $120 dress. Maybe at least offer a 10% off coupon for throwing away my $150 jeans. i wonder if one of the saleswomen is wearing them right now... read more

Ok, this place is unfortuantely not a great option for Free people...if you're shopping for Free People in the city just head to rock center. That place is amazing and makes all the other FP stores look like a joke. They have a small upstairs (which you enter on) and that has a very small amount of their in season clothes. Downstairs is mostly intimates and dressing rooms. If you want to stock up on intimates this place might be a good option. Otherwise, so tiny and just didn't have the same amount of merchandise as some of the other stores. The service is pretty good, nothing good/bad either way. read more

I love the brand in general because their clothes are so cute. But out of the three locations they have in new york, this is by far my favorite. It's the biggest, which means they have the most inventory in stock, so more to browse. They also have fabulous sales all the time, which works out because you can find really cute clothes for really cheap. They also have a decent selection of accessories. The sales assistants here are so helpful, they actually give you good feedback and suggest ways to improve a look. They also go above and beyond what they need to do to satisfy the customers -- I tried on a dress and really liked it, but they were out of my size, and the sales assistant called all the free people stores in america to find one in my size so they can ship it to me -- for free! I wish I hated Free People, because their stuff is so trendy, overpriced, and unpredictable in general fit and quality. But once in a while, I feel that I MUST try something on before having it sent to my mother's house in Massachusetts to evade sales tax (yeah, I said it). Or worse, sometimes, I just HAVE TO HAVE IT, right away. For these times, this is the shop to hit up. It is simply the largest one with the most current selection (and sales to match) in their inventory. Though neglectful service is usually in proportion to the size and selection of any clothing store, the staff here does the best it can to stay on top of it. Most recently, when I was tracking down a pair of jeans that had literally come in that day, a salesperson assured me on the phone in the morning that my size would be on reserve for me. When I got there, I had to ask a couple people about the pants. They first denied that the style had even arrived to the store yet. I stuck to my guns, however, and was produced with whatI had been looking for. However, they'd set aside the wrong size! So, I went through the same kind of process (polite persistence in the face of uncertain denials) and got what I needed. It was closing time, so the cashier was overstretched and stressed, but I finally got my goddamn pants when any other process from this company would have taken ten times as long (via UPS ground shipping). I used to hit up the Upper East Side location (worst) because it was near my house, and have also browsed at the SoHo Spring Street chain (small spot but with a decent selection and unintrusive staff) many a time. But if you are serious about having a one-stop experience, it may be worth sucking it up and threading through this horrendous NYU neighborhood to get to the mainline of this supplier to nouveau/faux hippie clotheshorses. read more

My favorite store and my favorite location. I've basically gotten to the point where I only want new clothes from FP. This wasn't always the case. Their clothes used to be quite poorly made and really tiny (if I recall correctly). In the past year or so, the quality has really improved and pieces are so lovely and special that I really don't mind spending a little extra on them. Case in point, bought a lovely long-sleeved dress there for $118. Not super cost effective, except that it came with a great black slip for underneath. Well done, FP. This specific store gets high marks because I was walking from work to a dinner out with friends (that's 50 blocks, people) and decided that I no longer wanted to wear the same thing to dinner as I did to work. The girls at the store were super helpful in my selection of a pretty green top and even let me wear it out the door. It was like having girlfriends there to give me their POV, even though my girlfriends were en route to our dinner date. Great customer service! read more

This is the biggest Free People store, which means that it has the most inventory. If there's something online that you like, but want to try it on in real life, then this is the best store to go to. And they have the shoes here too. The other two Free People (UES and SoHo) are much smaller and as soon as the clothes go on sale, then the items are OUT of the store. This one on 5th still keeps some of the sales items. And as everyone says, the salespeople here are really nice. Really great service. read more

Despite that fact that I prefer and try shop at locally owned or small businesses, as far as perfect branding goes, this place has it down. I went to this place on July 25th, a Thursday, right before close to see if there was anything that might fit me better than the dress I bought for an outdoor wedding. I grabbed about seven dresses (three of which turned out to be really fancy slips or night gowns) and went to the dressing room, which was as big as and decorated like my dream college tiny dorm room. So comfortable and spacious with handmade dangly flowers at different levels from the ceiling. I felt really guilty about trying on so much last minute, having worked in retail and also as a bartender for a while, but I have never had so many people asking so nicely if I needed anything else. I felt sincerely like every single person there was being patient from the front door to the dressing room to the cash wrap. And even though it was a lil expensive for me, I walked out with a night gown I liked so much, I wore it out to work the next two days. A plus for amazing service, great merchandising, and a staff that is thoroughly on top of their shit. read more

But, when you walk into an expensive clothing store and are not greeted, not helped, and literally "up-downed" by a salesgirl, nothing can get me to spend money there. Have to disagree with the other reviews because I've never had bad service here. I've actually only had the opposite experience. The staff has always been really accommodating and gone out of their way to help me find what I was looking for, either by calling other stores or ordering it online for me. If something is out of stock in the store, they'll order it to be delivered to you with free shipping, as opposed to ordering it online yourself and paying the shipping fee. read more

i'm obsessed with free people. i put on anything and it looks hot.. (including the lingerie they make which is hip AND sexy). their sizes are true to size which makes me happy too. the people who work here are so freaking nice too. you'd think they'd be bitchy because it's like 'oooh free people. we're elitists' but no, they totally help you pick out outfits and tell you the truth when you are vacillating between potential purchases. the store itself is nicely spaced out with two stories and they sell True Religion Jeans too. their sale section is large and the deals are super legit when on sale. prices are expensive and you can usually find free people stuff at Filene's Basement from like two seasons ago. BUT... sometimes a girl should invest in something really fabulous that makes you look cool/casual AND hot at the same time. when in need of that fabulousness, free people is the place to hit up. read more

Wow. Well I will say the store is beautifully arranged. They do an amazing job of branding/ making you feel like a certain kind of person for shopping there.... Let me begin by saying I am nine months pregnant and walked in probably looking a bit disheveled after walking around sweating in the sun yesterday so I was not entirely surprised when at watching the greeter un-notice me and every other worker painstakingly avoid eye contact. Whatever. I was there for a dress. I needed something to transition from the last month of pregnancy to nursing/after birth and their cuts/styles made the most sense for that purpose so I didn't get too hung up on the lack of smiling faces. When I went downstairs I found a perfect mock wrap gauzy little thing that was on sale for about $10 off because of a broken zipper. I walked over to a worker chatting on their little walkies held the dress out and said "excuse me"... Nothing. Again, "excuse me". And she angled her body slightly away from me. "Excuse me?" And she literally gets up and walks away from me...? Ok, whatever was just going to ask about how much it would cost to fix and if I could try it on. I walk over to the dressing room and stand in front of it, dress in arms, for about 90 seconds as two girls pass me then just walk into one of the open dressing rooms where one of those girls comes swooping in frantically and says do you need a dressing room? Yes. Ok, let me get you another one. Then brings me a little further back. Where I ask her about how much to fix the zipper. About $5. Just take it to a tailor. I ask if she has an intact dress of the same style? "I don't know but I'd be happy to check!" Thanks! Except she never comes back and I have to track down the other salesgirl to ask the same question. They did not but they had it online. I ask her if she thinks the price difference is worth it? About how much to get it fixed at the tailor? Oh, about $5. I take the dress upstairs to pay and the woman at the counter again mentions its a super easy fix, just take it to a tailor and it'll be about $5. Final sale though. And a hundred forty something for a damaged dress. Ok... Cause it's an easy fix, right? Just let the third tailor with estimates between $25 and thirty. F*ck those people. read more

This location has the widest variety of accessories, namely hats and jewelry. Plus, they have another floor dedicated to shoes and lingerie. The salespeople aren't very helpful or friendly, but that is expected of Free People. I wish they would play better music in this store, but overall, shopping at this location is always a decent experience. read more

Horrible company! I made an order for 626$ to be sent to Switzerland. Roughly in a week I got it "delivered". On my tiny box was a full list of items I've ordered and hence I have to pay ~90$ as customs toll, so far so good. When I opened my box and only found 3 items instead of expected 9, furthermore, of those three one I didn't order at all. OK, I write an email to the support. They immediately accept it was a mistake on their side. The support suggests two options: 1) resend the order, 2) refund it. There is a catch with the resend: customs toll. As I said before they by mistake listed all the items on the first box which means that I will pay another ~90$ as customs toll. After I tried to explain it to them I decided to refund. And here came another surprise: they included into the refund the item I haven't ordered :) Not to mention custom tolls. As a result for more than 200$ I have three items of which one I didn't order. Excellent execution, thank you so much, free people! read more

OK, customer service = hands down amazing. Selection of clothing - OUTSTANDING. Best part was that they have two levels which downstairs has their intimates, shoes, sale room and more. I especially liked the pieces that you can see online which are $400+ are sold in the store so you don't have to be guessing that if you ordered it online if it would fit you. I ordered some clothes online, which I wanted to return, so went to the boutique in person (for the first time). I was disappointed that I could only get a store credit from clothing bought online - would have to return by mail to get refund. But, aside from that, I had a great time using my credit. There was a large selection - and NOT just for tiny people. I am 5'5" 140 pounds and the medium tops were in some cases too large. The staff was very nice and helpful, both in this store and the one at Rockefeller Center, and I felt right at home even though I am way older than their target demographic. I was assured that grandmothers wear their clothing too (I guess they do, because I am a grandmother). Very attractive stores, and superior sales staff. read more

This location has gone through some nice structural and staff changes. They cleared out the basement level and the space is more open and easier to shop through. They have a nice intimates and footwear selection at this location, near the sale section downstairs. The staff seems more efficient and pleasant now too, which also improves the overall atmosphere, but they are still a bit non-existent. I wish this location had more clothing and less intimates, but overall they have fum and edgy pieces here. read more

Most customer-unfriendly store I have ever ordered. They did a mistake by making me pay custom and taxes for an item never delivered. I can't get back the money and they just don't want to help and don't care. On another order I waited for over month: Without checking back on Freepeople, I guess they would never let me know that the paid item was just lost. Highly NOT recommendable! read more

i guess i'm biased because i used to work for free people, but i really do enjoy this crazy store. this particular location is two floors (by far the biggest boutique of 'em all) and they do a great job of keeping it pretty well stocked. i don't think i've run into any awful sales associates here yet, and most of them are pretty friendly and very helpful. the selection can be overwhelming, given the fp style, so if you miss a lot, they're there to help you find it. it is pretty pricey for the quality and over the years i've shopped here less and less, but you can still find great gems for each season. and if you have that weird artsy friend who isn't quite hipster, this is a great place to pick up a gift for her. read more

This store and people that work there broke my heart, l hate to say this. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL. If you shop in this store you gona leave heartbroken. l bought a pair of shoes on April 6th, I paid $128 +tax. l loved the shoes that l bought and was very excited about it. l took the box with the shoes and went home by the time l opened the box l see that the lace for the shoes were missing. So l called the store to let them know and they said that's not a problem just stop by the store and we will give you the lace that are missing. Few days later l stopped at the store and l spoke to one of the workers and l explained to her that l bought this pair of shoes but the lace is missing. She said that l have to do an exchange in order to get the lace for my shoes!!!!! l said that l don't need to do that l just need to get the lace........... the manager of the store said that l have to leave my shoes that l was wearing already and get the new pair of shoes with the lace. The new pair of shoes that they gave me are not good, something wrong with the left shoe and l told the manager and the other stylist but they said yeah its weird but you have to take them because we don't have anything else and did not even let me take my left shoe that l just exchange, did not even APOLOGISE. My left foot is all bruised up and cant even wear anything but flip flops. My heart is Broken and l will never go to that store ever again no matter how much l love to buy a pair of shoe over there. Now l have the lace but l got no left shoe to wear because the shoe you can see it's damaged, l just paid $128 for nothing!!!!!! l wish l knew so l could donate that much money better than to buy a pair of shoes that will leave you in pain. After shopping at this Free People, it's hard to go back to any other. Not only is it huge (with a whole room just for sale!) and pretty well organized, they get in more stock than any other Free People store. Whenever I am looking for a particular item, I am always told to call or visit this location. The salespeople are also the perfect balance of helpful and honest. One of my biggest pet peeves is pushy salespeople. But I also am an indecisive shopper and like to have help sometimes. I love Free People clothing because their clothing is so versatile. Rarely can you buy something that you actually want to to wear to work and out. I have never bought anything here that I didn't get a crazy amount of compliments on. They also almost always have everything still in stock when it comes to sale time and I am a huge fan of trying on things when they first come out and waiting until they go on sale. I used to work near this location and let's just say it was dangerous to walk by it so frequently! read more

I am from Australia and recently found this clothing line which I loved, I purchased several items on-line. I was then sent a e-mail a few days later saying that they needed to confirm my address, they asked for a copy of my passport, drivers lic & copy of a recent credit card statement. I have never heard of such a thing, I had plenty of credit on my card and a very good credit card history. I am to frightened to hand this valuable information over as it could be used to set up anything in my name, has anyone else had this problem with this or any other American company? read more

My daughter, who is 5'6", is unable to wear their clothes because they only go to a size 12. Really?! She is a perfect weight and BMI, but apparently they only cater to tiny girls. When I tried to return a jacket my mother bought her to a different store, I was told that, without the original debit card (not the receipt, but the actual card), I could only get store credit! I wasn't trying to get the cash myself, just return it to the original source. But I was told that this was "their policy." Obviously store credit wasn't going to work since they don't make clothes for people of normal size, so I had to pay to ship the jacket back to my mother so she could return it to her original store. I ordered a pair of boots in June, and received 2 left boots. My replacement pair still has not shipped. This is the worst company to order from online. I have been told at least twice my boots would ship Monday. I guess my bad for not asking which Monday. Today I was told they will ship in 48 business hours, so I guess maybe next Monday they should ship. Hopefully I gut a left and a right this time since free people will only do a quality check AFTER they make a mistake. The girl today assured me this is normal. Really. You NORMALLY treat your paying customers this way. I've actually had time to win an auction on eBay and received that item along with a router from New Egg. Terrible customer service!!!!! I ordered but one T-shirt. Some kid named Tim, who needs to learn about customer service. Was rude and completely unprofessional. I called to complain because the T-shirt I ordered took three weeks to arrive, maybe even more. Then when I got the shirt it was huge and totally looked nothing like the picture online. I of course called to complain. This kid was so rude and he told me I would have to pay shipping to return the t-shirt and then get another shirt. I told him I was not going to pay to re-ship it back!!! WTF! So he told me to keep the shirt and he would re-fund me and hung up on me! Never refunded me. This punk kid needs to learn some manners. I let it go, as being in the marketing profession, someone would never get away with acting like that to customers. I did like the product online. But when you get the physical thing its crap.
