But then it took off like a rocket. My wife had the Hawaiian steak with broccoli and it was a very good cut of meat. The portion size was huge and enough for her to take home. In my opinion it was overly sweet but my wife enjoyed it. I went with the special for the night which was a crab cake and 5oz steak with mashed potatoes. My meal was delicious and this was the most authentic crab cake I've had since my time in Maryland. There were actual chunks of crab meat inside and not fillers. My steak was tender and juicy. My wife received a birthday dessert which was carrot cake and it was very delicious and I'm not usually a fan of carrot cake. Let me start by saying I normally love it here. The service and atmosphere are awesome. I never stray from my usual...the French dip and the carrot cake. I did not get the carrot cake today as I'm headed to a move and needed to save room for my snack. But I did get the French dip and unfortunately it was disappointing. It was very fatty and I think the meat just wasn't cooked long enough. There was limited horse radish too. The fries were good as always and the bread was delicious. My fiance brought me here on Valentines Day and we sat at the bar. We typically like to sit at the bar because you get to interact more with the staff and other patrons. **GOAT ALERT** Carrot Cake The reviews for J. Alexander's have been on lockdown for months. I went here way back in November, but was unable to write a review then so this one will be almost 6 months after the fact. One of my old co-workers used to always bug me about going to J. Alexander's. He knows I love going to try restaurants and especially fancy spots. He was a little dumbfounded when I told him I've never been here, but he always comes here when he drives over from Orlando. Up first, the $14 deviled eggs. Ok so my only gripe is these things are frozen so cold I dang near had frostbite in my mouth. I think I would have enjoyed them more if they were just chilled or slightly cold. I don't know if this was a mistake or they're always served like this. For my main course I had the $25 French Dip. Sadly, I was not into this French Dip. I should have gotten something else. However, after I complained about the French Dip being very average the bartender told me the best spot for one is at Bazille inside of Nordstrom at the mall. Read my review over there. He nailed that one. Best hidden gem in Tampa Bay. The $16 espresso martini was flat out bad. Wouldn't order that again either. J Alexander's has become our pre Lightning game dinner spot over the last 2 seasons - so I figured I needed to update my review. After probably 20+ visits over the last year, sitting in the bar or the dining room we have had nothing but excellent quality food and fantastic service. We found J. Alexander's on Resy and decided to give it a try, glad we did! Even though it's a steakhouse, they offer a wide variety of dishes, from fish to red and white meats. I ordered the Prime Rib, which was delicious, and the large serving of mashed potatoes was a nice surprise. My fiancée had the ribs with mac and cheese plus fries, also very tasty. My only con was that the mashed potatoes could have used a bit more salt but overall delicious. One detail I really liked was how they served my dirty martini. Instead of filling the glass to the very top (which makes it easy to spill) or giving me less, they filled the glass comfortably and brought the extra in a small side cup so I could refill. Smart and thoughtful! Our server seemed a little inexperienced but still provided excellent service. Overall, I had a great experience, and I highly recommend this place. Wow this place is disgustingly awful. Other than horrible food and service they try to charge an undisclosed "packing fee" to customers. I saw someone gently question this and was very rudely asked to leave the establishment before the police were called and this man was trespassed. Hello Yelpers!!! OMG, where do I start? As soon as you park in the lot, the smell of wood fired steak grilling hits you and the drool begins! They were totally delicious and the meat...... as a New Yorker says was "Off Da Bone" delicious. And then.... Let's talk about the sides! I've been to J.Alexanders many, many times and it's always been delicious! Today we decided to have a late lunch/early dinner. As we were seated our server Thomas approached and offered drinks. I absolutely love the French Dip from this restaurant. It's made with shaved prime rib. It's ALWAYS yummy. Today they had a special called Millionaire Steak Sandwich which is Grilled beef tenderloin, arugula, and creamy horseradish. The sandwich was served with French fries. I have never had this sandwich but took my server Thomas' advice and tried it. He said the difference is the meat is big chunks instead of shaved. While this sandwich was delicious, I personally wouldn't order it again. As you bite the sandwich the chunks of meat tend to fall out. For me, I'll stick with my original, the French Dip. I guess the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it! My husband had the original favorite, the French Dip. He ordered it with a side of Mac & cheese. Last night's dinner was a bit of a rollercoaster--starting with a ribeye that came in swinging with flavor but also way more fat than I bargained for (for that price, I was hoping for more steak and less trimming). SAVE YOUR MONEY AND AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST! This is my second terrible experience with this restaurant, and it will be my last. During our first visit, our table was reassigned to five different servers throughout the evening. While that alone was inconvenient, the bigger issue occurred when our drink order was mishandled. I ordered a margarita, and my partner -- who does not consume alcohol -- ordered a virgin drink. The drinks were brought out incorrectly: mine without alcohol and his with alcohol. When we politely asked for them to be corrected, our server insisted the drinks were made properly and implied that we were mistaken about tasting alcohol. My partner, who has never consumed alcohol, immediately began coughing after trying the drink. I am familiar with the taste of alcohol myself, and it was very clear the drinks had been switched. Rather than escalate the situation, we chose to move forward and still tipped 20%, assuming perhaps it was simply an off night. Unfortunately, our second experience was even more disappointing. About a month ago, I placed and paid for an online order for two orders of Hong Kong Shrimp. I provided my phone number in case there were any issues, though the order was placed under my mother's name so she could pick it up. When she arrived (after driving 45 minutes), she was given a completely different order and told the fryer was broken. At no point was I contacted to inform me that the item I paid for was unavailable. When my mother questioned the order, she was left waiting approximately 20 minutes while staff stood behind the bar laughing and making drinks. I then called the restaurant and was placed on hold for 15 minutes, only to be told that usually the person who orders is the one who picks up -- as if that explained giving out the wrong food. I requested a refund since the item I paid for was not available. I was told to request it "in the app," even though I ordered directly online. Eventually, I was told I would be refunded within 24-48 hours. It has now been over a month. I followed up via email and was contacted by William Foster, who again assured me the refund would be processed within 24-48 hours. To date, I have received no refund and no further communication. Mistakes happen. Lack of accountability and ignoring customers does not. Extremely disappointing. No wonder you guys have such a Horrible Reputation on TikTok only wish I would've known before giving them any business they also charge $3 for bagging pick up orders and kicked out a costumer just for asking what was the $3 charge. I went here with high expectations, and was disappointed with the outcome. The four of us first stopped at the bar for a drink before dinner. The bar area is nice and service was great. I had a pomegranate martini and it came with what they called a "sidecar", which means you get more martini on the side. It was very good. I hadn't had prime rib in years, so I settled on the 12 oz portion with a loaded baked potato. While we were waiting, they brought bread and butter. I believe it was sourdough bread and it was delicious! When we asked for more, our server got attitude. What? For bread? I enjoyed a glass of Pinot Noir, which was a decent pour. My picture of my prime rib turned out blurry, so I couldn't post it. The slice was super thick, and prepared medium as I like it, with a side cup of au jus. This was probably the most dense, dry, prime rib I have ever eaten. Even after dipping in the au jus, it was dry. It was supposed to come with horseradish, so I tracked down the server, who again was put out I asked for something else.
