We haven't found too many restaurants that have impressed us & this one really did We had rattlesnake chicken, really liked that the pieces of chicken were shaved versus hunks of chicken. The sauce was flavorful & not heavy like most cream sauces. Do have to say that the dish could use more veggies. Had just a bare handful of peppers thrown in. We also had chicken fingers, mac & cheese and broccoli. Fingers were very good! Perfectly done & the mac n cheese was finally some good southern cookin Dessert was the chocolate cake. Found this place by accident. We were driving back from Florida on Saturday night and needed to stop and eat. I didn't feel like fast-food, so we started trying different exits while passing through Chattanooga. The first exit looked like a Projects area, with empty gas stations and pawnshops. The second exit (over the ridge) was much more inviting. J. Alexander's has a WIDE variety of wines to choose from, but I didn't partake since we were planning to drive another hour or so after dinner. I ordered the Steak N Fries which was yum-my. The service was good. The atmosphere was dim and quiet. Service was pretty good... Who knows? If I wasn't half-dead from driving, I might have enjoyed it enough to scored this a 4.5 (possible?). Single and 50ish, where would she meet friends to socialize with? Coming from Virginia Beach, Suburbia was not for her. Downtown too expensive. When dropping her off back at the hotel near Hamilton Place Mall, I suggested she drive over to J Alexanders for Happy Hour and dinner, then meet the Locals. Ask other singles where she would be most happy living in Chattanooga. Sounds like I gave her the right advise. J alexanders is my favorite restaurant.... Ever!! J's is always consistent with everything! Excellent service delicious food, and cocktails. I used to bartend here for 6 years most people can't say that a place they've worked at is their favorite restaurant. J's is super clean, they really go above and beyond trust me their standards are high. Aurea and Brittney are my favorite servers, Tricia can make some killer cocktails and she's always fun to chat with. Adam will take care of you if you have any issues. My filet accidentally got thrown away when my food was getting boxed up in the back and they brought me about a whole new filet to take home. Wow. Was a $100 lunch with no drinks really this disappointing. Yes, yes it was. For the quick read, go to Firebirds or Ruth Chris! The Cool Springs location was an office lunch and personal dinner favorite for many years. Oh how things have changed coming to Chattanooga. Fish special on a Monday. Before you guess, we know better. We know who Anthony Bourdain is and Kitchen Confidential, lol. But first lets get to the Ahi tuna app. 4 pieces the size of half your thumb cooked through, not seared for $20. Really. Ruth Chris and Firebird gives you 3 times that for less money. Seared right too. Rattlesnake pasta. Nothing like it used to be. Soft mushy wide noodles with the chicken cut even thinner and no hint of seasoning outside of a plain Alfredo. 4 or 5 slices of a green pepper didn't elevate this dish to anything near what it used to be. This was just a plate of mush. Literally. On to the fishy fish. Even though we talked about a Monday fish special being a bad idea, when you are craving a certain meal, you are. Too bad 20 minutes after eating it you are nauseated and sweating from the brow and under the eyes in 40 degree weather. The guest who ate the fish was sick the rest of the day. Even a dram of Laphroaig couldn't fend off the nausea hours later. We had planned a nice dinner, but lunch ruined that. I have found memories of J's. Not anymore. There is no reason to return to this location. Severely overpriced for mediocre food. Good service at least, but just go to Ruth Chris or Firebirds. Same level of service and Worlds better food! In fact, any restaurant in the surrounding area will serve you better food in our experience. Don't want anything. Issues were addressed with the proper staff at the time. As per our other reviews if you want or take anything from a restaurant then your review should be invalidated. That's what we think and go by anyway. I always wanted to check this place out and it has a great look, from the outside. When we entered the restaurant the first thing I thought of was Houstons restaurants that I've been to in Atlanta, very similar decor, nice. The service was great our server was pleasant, attentive, but not hovering. My wife had a salmon dish with baked potato. She loved it! The portion was sufficient without being the normal huge monster portion. I had a salad with grilled chicken and it was great, lots of flavor, everything was fresh. We are "regulars" at J. Alexander's in Franklin where we live, and in an odd coincidence have now visited this location twice in the past six months. Both trips were delicious. We loooooove the orzo salad, and their house salad is always perfect. We have always had great service at J.'s lcations (think we've been to five now around the South) and delicious entrees no matter what we select. This trip I tried the ribs that the hostess couldn't stop talking about, and they were exceptional. Hubby went for his favorite chicken tenders and they were hot and delicious. We had another exceptional server, Adam, who is one of those servers that will cut up with you if you appear game for such. He was hilarious but also attentive, and you can tell he loves his job. If you have not had their carrot cake, you are missing out. We got one to go, as we often do when we're treating ourselves, and enjoyed about an hour after our hearty dinner while watching the Olympics opening ceremony in the hotel. Our server knew that, and took the liberty of not only including disposable flatware, but also adding to go iced teas for us. Awww.... Their very best chocolate cake is also awesome if you're not a carrot fan. This location is larger than ours at home, so we were very pleased there was no wait at 6:20 on a Friday evening. Had the white bean soup and it was an amazing way to start the meal. I followed the soup with the tuna cooked rare which was absolutely delicate in my palate. I got the orzo and wildrice as one of my sise dish, it was so refreshingly fresh and tasty. The mc n cheese was super creamy and delicious one of the best i have tasted. For dessert I had the carrot cake which was warm and moist! And the icing was my favorite part of the dessert. To drink i has the pelegrino water which is unlimited refills and I also had the capucinno which was not my best bean flavor but it was made and brewed very well. Every once in a while I have a hankering for a steak and on the day that I went to J Alexanders it was on this day. I went along with friends and was totally undecided on what I wanted. I knew for certain that I wanted to try that mac and cheese that everyone raves about. My two counterparts ordered the Maui steak. Their steaks came out and my mac and cheese came out hot and bubbly. Their steaks looked good but I still wasn't impressed, I really cut back on meat in general and I really wasn't feeling it. However one of the girls insisted that I try it and it was love at first bite. Sweet, tender deliciousness dancing all over my tongue. I had to have it! I ordered mine medium rare and it came out perfect. My meal was A1, the service was A1, and now I am a Jay Alexanders fan. I've visited this place twice very recently. The first visit was during Labor Day weekend. I was very excited because I heard they had good shrimp. We had made reservations so we already had a table waiting for us. We were seated upon arrival. The hosts were friendly and our waiter was friendly as well. We were given our menus and were told about their "catch" of the day. Finally, when we were ready to order, I was going to order the Emerald Coast Shrimp but they said they were out of it due to it being Labor Day weekend. They were also out of their Prime Rib Sandwich, which someone with us was going to order. I was very disappointed. That was the main reason I went there for the shrimp. They should have put something on their website and/or social media outlets to let people know that. Had I known, I would not have gone. I ended up ordering the salmon. It was really good and juicy. It was not the best salmon I've ever had but I would eat it again. Everything was hot and tasty and the service was consistent with kindness. I ordered a cocktail and it was delicious. Overall had a nice experience on my first visit. The second visit was just as pleasant. I figured I would give them another chance since the first visit was during a major holiday. So on this visit, we were greeted by friendly hosts. They held the door open for us and sat us down. Our waitress was very pleasant and seemed like she really liked her job. She was very knowledgeable about items I inquired about from their menu. They had the Emerald Coast Shrimp this time and wowwwww, they definitely give you your money's worth. It was a whole lot of it. Needless to say, I did not finish it all and had to take some home. It was very good and not extra chewy like at some places. It had just the right crunch and the batter was good too. I love their shoestring fries but the only downside is that you have to eat a handful in order to really taste it. When it came time for me to order a drink, I was stuck between 2 different ones. She broke down the differences and I ended up going with what she suggested. When she learned it was also my birthday, after we had eaten our dinner, she offered some dessert. At first,I declined but when she mentioned chocolate cake, I accepted the offer. The waiter came out with cake and ice cream. It was a nice gesture and tasted really good. On both visits, I enjoyed the experience. I would definitely be back for the shrimp and drinks. They have awesome drinks. I gave a 4 out of a 5 star due to the fact they were out of items on my first visit. But the place is excellent! read more

What a great experience from start to finish, Ricky the manager is the nicest guy you ever want to meet. Our food was fantastic they have the best Caesar salad you'll ever eat anywhere! Pains me to write this as I have been coming to this restaurant since moving to the area more than 5 years ago...supported them by ordering to go during the covid times....lately the prices have gone up, they took away the family meals, and the portions went way down (see other reviews regarding same), and quality of ingredients I suspect also went down (just not the same). The servers attitude is getting also quite tiring.... Whoever is managing this place is surely not focused on the long term. I am all for restaurants making a living, but you have to deliver on the food and the value. Location 5, scene 5 (thus far...customers will catch up and go away, very hard to bring customers back once they are gone, like me, I will not be back....), food 1 (food used to be a lot better, the portions took a noticeable hit), service 2 (not extraordinary at all, in fact with a bit of an attitude) and value -1. Why would you go to a place that serves you like they are doing you a favor, with poor food and portions, and dismal value when there are so many other choices. Too bad, lets see what restaurant goes in their place once they go belly up sometime...and it does not take long for people to notice. I will miss the old J. Alexanders...... Whoever is calling the management shots should be fired for driving this place down. Last $200 that I spend there. Lesson learned after three recent subpar experiences. read more

I was visiting Chattanooga from St. Louis and decided to try J. Alexander's for dinner. The service was absolutely amazing. The young man I had (I believe his name was Justin) was hands down the best waiter I've ever had. I had the NY Strip and the NYO Mac and Cheese. The steak was perfectly cooked and the mac and cheese was the kind of scrumptious that soothed the soul. I also had the Triple Chocolate Cake for dessert, and even without the ice cream, it was amazing. It just melted in your mouth! The place was very clean and nice. We knew we would expected a wait and we sat at the bar to wait on our table. For how small the bar was the bartenders took way too long to get to us before we even got to order one drink. Then they asked if we wanted to eat at the bar and when we decided to just eat at the bar because we thought maybe they would actually serve us they didn't. There were so many servers and bartenders behind the bar but their body language was very shut off and dismissive. From the point of view of a poor College kid, one would probably never consider going to J. Alexanders. It is kind of pricey. But the thing about J. Alexanders is that their portions are HUGE and their food is great. You can get a lot of food for 10 bucks. And it's really good food. If you go to J. Alexanders, a must is their macaroni. It's really different, but delicious. They bake it with croutons and bacon and 2 or 3 cheeses or something. I'm really picky with food and I've never actually had anything from this restaurant that I didn't like. The people that work there might seem kind of stuck-up sometimes, but I used to know someone that worked there and I've been told that they weren't really supposed to talk to the customers because the restaurant seems to cater to businessmen at meetings. read more

I stayed on hold for 30 minutes just to have them come on the line and say no one was available to take my order and I would need to come in. I'm not sure why the same person that would take my order if I came in could not get on the phone and take my order. J.Alexanders use to take pride in there food but it's seem that the quality of there products has went to an all time low and yet the prices are sky high. I ordered the maui steak dinner and had it picked up being that I work third shift 1 there wasn't a drop of maui sauce on the steak and 2 the mac and cheese has some type of Brown substance in it. I called to simply get it replaced and ABBY the manger told me that since it was picked up by a third party they can not and will not fix the problem. Now this is a problem because they took my money from a third person and disabled and elderly people who has to depend on pick up to get food is stuck if the food is wromy. No amount of money is worth food Poisoning . What ABBY should have said was to let me see it Bc third party or not if I had gotten sick on that dry and nasty looking Mac and cheese we would have been going to court.
