The restaurant is located in the Walmart shopping plaza with its own stand along building. It is right across street from fogo de chao Dunwoody location. We went there for our Valentine's Day dinner. The restaurant was booked up since 2 weeks before, which makes sense. The restaurant serves freshly baked sourdough bread as complementary appetizer: remember to ask for them. We ordered huevo rolls as our appetizer. It comes with sour cream and pico de Gallo. They are egg rolls with black bean and corn fillings. Really delicious! We ordered ribs and French dip for dinner, BBQ sauce has a piquant flavor because of the plum juice. The service was great too even with the full house. J. You can find this location of J. Alexander's at 4701 Ashford Dunwoody Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30338 in Perimeter Village, the shopping center North and across Ashford Dunwoody Rd from Perimeter Mall. This is a large shopping center that has a Walmart as the anchor, but also includes a US Post Office and several restaurants worth trying like Viceroy Indian Cuisine. I spend a lot of time over here due to its proximity to my work. J. Alexander's occupies the old Houston's location, inheriting the sexy interior that features fabulous Louis Poulsen Artichoke Pendant Lamps, a rich dark wood interior and inviting bar. For me this location was always about drinking and having a few appetizers, something the restaurant does very well. I had eaten here a couple of times when it was Houston's and think of that chain as more of the original bourbon/wine and steak concept. J. Alexander's continues with that theme, at least at this location (the only one I've visited) and does very well by that concept, offering a selection of steaks, seafood and wines competitive with many high-end restaurants. On this occasion I attended a short business meeting during lunch with only a few people. For the most part everyone was looking at the salads and fish options so my photos and review will focus on those items. I hope to come back and try a nice cut of prime rib with a reserve label red. We had reservations and were seated with about 5 minutes of standing in the lobby waiting for the entire party to enter. Service started very good with polite hosts attending and a couple of wait staffers to serve (I believe one was in training). I had one of the specials, the Golden Sea Bass with Mango Papaya Salsa served with couscous and it was quite good if a little light weight - a small salad would have enhanced the experience (but again, I should have asked about a salad). I was envious of the lunch salads that others ordered, including an Ahi Tuna Salad and a Cyprus Salad from the regular menu. Food on delivery seemed a bit rushed and the wait time from order to delivery was quite long - the only negatives to an exceptional experience. Also and perhaps this was due to the rushed delivery, the food was a bit skewed on the plates (I know that this is nitpicking but when you pay more the expectation should be higher, yes?). Food was phenomenal! Came for an anniversary special dinner. We made reservations in advance and included twice on the reservation anniversary. I don't know what point of reservation system is if the hostess or management isn't looking at it to provide top notch service. Waiter seemed new and didn't have experience in fine dining. At end of meal we were hoping they would bring us a little something on the house (normally nice restaurants do this). Another server came to table to collect plates and asked if we wanted dessert. We said we were celebrating anniversary and if they'd do anything. I mentioned I had included this information in my reservation. She then proceeded to ask us how long we have been together and whether dating or married. This felt personal and we were uncomfortable with question. She then told us "no worries, it took my husband and I 9 years to get married." This statement was unprofessional and unnecessary. Eventually our waiter came back and asked if we wanted dessert as well. We had already said yes to another server and it's clear the communication channels aren't open. It made for not an entirely smooth dining experience which was disappointing considering we chose this location specially to celebrate and we spent a lot on the food. read more

Im disappointed. This used to be a really solid restaurant. We used to eat at this particular restaurant weekly but i moved further away so we stopped. I enjoyed the fact that whether I'm in south Florida Nashville or Atlanta I could get consistent food and consistent service. This particular location had a lot of seasoned servers that we would see throughout the years which speaks volumes now bc there seems to be a lot of new faces including management. The quality and portions of food we received at our last visit was extremely disappointing. I had the lobster roll which was bread and unseasoned lobster and very little aioli. We all had Mac and cheese bc it's our favorite and we all agreed it didn't taste right. My 7 year old made a comment that the coleslaw wasn't good like it normally was and I have to agree it was light on dressing. What ruined our visit was the fact that my daughter ordered a salmon without the Cajun seasoning. When it came out she said it was spicy. We mentioned this to our server who apologized and said she would have it remade. This visit was special bc she was having surgery the next day and she wanted ¡Alexander's for the last meal she would have for two weeks. The manager brought the salmon back and stood there for a moment and I said thank you and he walked away. It was a weird exchange but it makes sense now. We put it in front of my daughter and we noticed she was picking with her salmon. After looking again we realized it was the same piece of salmon. They scraped the seasoning off and reheated it! I brought it to the servers attention and she got the same manager. I think he was trying to see if we would notice it was the same piece bc he positioned it so the untouched end was facing me when he handed me the plate. I explained we assumed we would be getting a new piece of salmon and I'm concerned that bc she ate off the salmon and they put it back on the grill that didn't seem sanitary. He stated "yes it is safe for them to put the same food back on the grill" after it's been eaten off of? "Yes" as he gave a deer in headlights look. He then offers to have it remade and of course we've had enough of them "remaking" things for us. I'm offended I'm disappointed and I'm hurt for my daughter. He did take the salmon off the bill but I'm still disturbed by our whole exchange. I now see why we don't recognize the same faces. I would expect this at McDonald's not at J Alexander's. Nice atmosphere, and able to accomodate our large party (15+) on short notice. Ahi tuna came with a slightly spicy dipping sauce and a side of mashed potatoes and was acceptable in taste and preparation. I added a side of heirloom tomatos accompanied by cheese and arugula. The menu had a wide range of food so most palates would be pleased. I prefer a restaurant to focus on a few items and prepare them perfectly than spread out to try to please everyone. Except for this dish, the only other seafood dishes were some appetizers and a special. There were not many steak dishes either, which was my other preference. This is one of our go to places we typically go there once a month or more frequently. I love the mashed potatoes and all the vegetables the ribs and burgers are especially good, but so is the fish selection, including the catch of the day. It was just okay. Dined in on a Saturday night. The service was okay, it could have been better. And then once I got there, I realized they received an 85 on their health score. I ordered the chef special which was sirloin & shrimp. I ordered the steak medium & it came out well done. Extremely tough & dry. It was $37 too so I was definitely upset. "Atlanta's best and sexiest rotisserie half-chicken" Amongst franchise upper tier eateries; J Alexander's definitely stands out as an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of perimeter area big box stores and it's a stone's throw away from the ginormous Walmart mall. As soon as we enter, calming low level lighting with orange and brown tones at a hostess desk await while super friendly staff guide us to oversized booth seating areas to unwind and start a pleasant dining experience. You are usually assigned a dedicated waiter or waitress but this restaurant has a team atmosphere for serving the food quickly. They have daily features for appetizers, mains and desserts (you can start an entire conversation on what is "the good stuff $9" listed on the seasonal desert menu!...". No, no, no! just because I know doesn't mean I'm going to tell you!!! The food here has been stellar, we particularly like Saturdays as their permanent soup of the day is the very hearty lean ground beef chili seared with an authentic mild jalapeño and shredded Monterrey jack cheese; one of the best chilis we have ever eaten! Other very memorable starters/side dishes included the 24 ingredient Orzo rice salad which comes with wild rice, apricots, cranberries, almonds, orzo and black wild rice, pistachios, corn, green onions and many ingredients you'll just need to discover! The thinly cut matchstick fries are very addictive so be forewarned! When seated, it is very easy to look into the open kitchen where all the magic happens. You can literally observe the chef and cooks making your food. And to the left you will see a fire rotisserie where chickens are rotating - and spit roasting sounds are integral part of the dining room's cool jazz soundtrack playing on the low key speakers throughout the space. We can say hands down that J Alexander's has " Atlanta's best and sexiest 1/2 rotisserie chicken ": Crispy on the outside, super juicy on the inside, the skin is uniformly golden orange brown with a side of au jus for dipping. Ribeye, ny strip and filet mignon cuts are equally memorable as is the extremely attentive service throughout What a great Jem in the Perimeter area! I'm a huge fan of J. Alexander's, and I've visited this location several times already. The service here is hit or miss honestly, but usually it's not atrocious from my experiences. The food has always been on point even when the service isn't, which is why this is one of mine and my boyfriend's preferred restaurants for a nice night out for dinner. You can make reservations which I would advise if it's the weekend or a special occasion because the wait can be long since it gets pretty busy here. Fortunately for us the wait has never been a big issue and the longest we've had to wait has been 20-30 minutes. The only time we really visit J. Alexander's is when I'm craving a prime rib which is really rare nowadays, but the cravings do invade every now and then. Although it's a chain, I can definitely say they dish out a really delicious and tender prime rib with well seasoned smashed potatoes. I've tried a few other dishes, but the prime rib and creme brulee keep me coming back. Their creme brulee is HUGE and definitely sharable. It's so creamy and not overly sweet, and I could eat the entire serving you myself to be completely honest. They do provide complimentary bread to start off with, but they usually won't offer it upfront, so you'll have to ask for the bread yourself. The ambience is very intimate and/or romantic, so this would be a nicer upscale place to celebrate a special occasion or have a romantic dinner date without breaking the bank too, too much. Although the ambience is more upscale, you can still have a casual lunch or dinner here as well without feeling like you have to dress up super nicely. Like I mentioned before the only thing I can really nitpick about would be the service. Some of the hostesses could be a little more professional and a few of the servers could be more attentive, but it's never been so terrible that it's really bothered me. As long as the quality of the food doesn't go down I'll continue to frequent here. read more

The portions here are huge. Even if you come with an appetite, there's a good chance that you'll be taking home leftovers. Also service is friendly. The food quality is a bit of a let down though. It's not bad at all... but just fairly average. I'd say it's a little better than at the big chains (tgi Friday's, etc) Ordered the rattlesnake pasta which was a bit too garlicky. As I sat and waited 2.5 he's for my Sis to get there (she was stuck in traffic on I-285 due to an accident ), I ordered the pomegranate martini and calamari. Yum, yum, yum. Upon her arrival, she ordered the Southwest egg rolls/wraps. Yummy! My entree was the Grouper with Lemon butter sauce, cole slaw and Isreali couscous which I substituted for the orzo and wild rice. Yum again. OK so now for martini #2, oh yeah BTW is comes with a sidecar of martini as well. Woo hoo! We had 3 complaints tonight with our food and service and the manager did not even bother to come and listen and once we flagged her down, all she could do was say she was sorry. I really love this place! I didnt get to try the food, but I did have their mojito - now, it was not that good BUT! I must say that the place is wonderful and the service was superb! Came here for dinner with the girls, but I was still full from whatever else I ate that day, that I just went for the drinks, and the girls ordered food. Never had I seen Perimeter in such a chaotic mess. It was 8:30 PM on a random Saturday night, and we had a 8:30 reservation at Maggiano's. Unfortunately for them, they were way overbooked. When we got there at 8:30, they hadn't even started seating the 8PM reservations. The hostess was in such a disarray. After a couple calls, we finally ended up at J Alexander's, which is located in the same plaza as Wal-Mart and Olive Garden, among many other stores and restaurants. We still had a 20 minute wait, but it was tolerable. The interior of the restaurant is dim and slightly romantic, so nice place for a casual (or upscale if you choose to make it so) date. I was here for a catch up girls night and we were impatient for food and drinks. Our server brought us water and took our orders, although not immediately. We both ordered the Ahi Tuna Salad without any alcoholic drinks. We were in a healthy state of mind, even though the drink menu looked fantastic. The tuna was fresh and the salad was refreshing and flavorful. The sweet wasabi and ginger gave it a true sushi feel, as well. We noticed the next table over ordered deviled eggs, so we immediately copied them. An order comes with 6 of the most delectable deviled eggs ever. The candied bacon we topped ourselves with the sprigs of cilantro from the middle of the platter. Delish. Food is a little pricey here but I really enjoyed the atmosphere, which I assume is included in the price of each dish. read more

You must be kidding....A budget version of Huston's.....This nightmare is over.........Here's what you need to know......Cramped diner-like seating, disappointing bar, dismissive service and less than impressive food. We left after appetizers and went Del Frisco Double Eagle for dinner. We chose this place based on location, yelp rating and the wood fired cooking process for a party of 6 @ 7:30 for a 35th birthday celebration. We arrived on time for our reservation and gave notice the 3rd couple wouldn't make it after receiving a text while walking in the door. The group of 4 was ushered to a booth. With NO TABLE SEATING we asked if we could be seated at the larger semi- circle booth providing more room for two guys and birthday gifts. We we're told it wasn't available despite less than 2 minutes earlier advising our reservation for 6 was now 4. The prepared larger booth sat empty until we departed....... Jammed into the booth with a wall on one side which made it uncomfortable for two -right handed diners we ordered drinks and appetizers. A Manhattan on a "rock" with 2 dashes of orange bitters and two glasses of rose' wine. The drinks arrived. The wine was barely room temp not the "typical" chilled serving method. The Manhattan was served neat NOT on a rock with 3 or more dashes of angostura bitters. When This was brought to the attention of the server, she dismissed my information with the wave of her hand as if to say "bye Felicia" The deviled eggs were awesome but the artichoke was a miss. This restaurant (the Tampa branch) will always hold a special place in my heart, as it was part of a wonderful first date with my husband. I love the atmosphere and the food and drinks are delicious. I love, love, love all of their salads. The Cypress is probably my favorite. I am also a big fan of the French Dip and the Mac and Cheese is divine. My husband loves the Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter. It is a little on the pricey side, but well worth the few extra dollars if you are looking for a special meal. This particular location can get a little loud and we have had a few timing issues (entrees coming out before we are finished with an appetizer, that kind of thing) but the staff is very attentive. YUM! YUM!!! YUM!!!! Those are the three words that come to mind whenever I think of J Alexanders. This restaurant continues to be at the top of the food chain (pun intended!) The mac and cheese is the food of the gods. In fact, I am jonesing for some right now just writing about it! I challenge anyone to find a better mac & cheese anywhere in the city. It is absolutely phenomenal. The steaks are honestly some of my favorite in Atlanta. Ask for the off menu Cajun spices on the ribeye, New York strip, or prime rib. They are delciious! And the calamari and chicken tenders are wonderful!! Speaking of off menu, don't forget to ask for the "off menu" complementary sourdough bread. They will even toast it for you and serve it with some delicious garlic butter. I've never had a bad piece of fish here. It is usually scrumptious AND a very large portion of fish. One of my biggest pet peeves when ordering fish is the size. For some reason, many restaurants think a small 6 ounce piece of fish can fill up a normal human adult. But it takes more than a tiny piece of fish to fill me up! Some other highlights include the fantastic chili, which is served on Saturday night. The crabcakes are quite solid, and the French fries are some of the best in Atlanta. If they don't put spices on them, be sure to request it!!! The Alex's salad is one of my favorite salads. You can get it with the house made cilantro vinaigrette dressing which is good enough to drink by the bucket. Aliyah and Keiarra will take excellent care of you and give you A+ service! Please be aware that they are not set up to accommodate extremely large groups unless you are OK sitting at separate tables. They accept reservations on OpenTable even though many people appear to come in and simply get on a waiting list. See you there!!! read more

I have been a J Alexander's customer since they had one restaurant many years ago in Nashville. I can say I have never been disappointed in the food or the service. This trip was actually my birthday dinner. I ordered a small Caesar salad, the Steak Maui with a loaded baked potato, and their heavenly Key lime pie. Their wine selection is also very good, and is one of the few restaurants I have found that offer more than one or two varieties of Riesling. I continue to be a faithful customer. On previous occasions when something that had been a staple on the menu was no longer offered, the management went out of their way to make sure that I either was able to have that item then or gave me a way to ensure that I could have it the next time I was in. Made a reservation arrived early. No one else in the restaurant. We were seated. The hosted then set a table of young girls and parents with a birthday cake right next to us. Every other table was empty but they seated the young children's party right next to us. The staff of several hostesses seemed disturbed abut our askingbto be Moved and only offered us one table over or another table if we could Leave it in one hour. Funny because they had offered that table to the birthday party but they did not want that table. We were told it was reserved. The worst Part of the experience was how rude the staff was toward us for mat wanting to sit by the CHILDREN as they do Put it. We left and will never return. Reservations do you no good and front end service was deplorable. The one hostess smirked at me when I challenged the reseating in ability with a completely empty restaurant. I think someone mentioned that this is also Stoney River, J . Alexander is decent no where near Stoney River. Years ago I use to compare them to Houston's but not so much anymore. Houston's and Stoney River are both better than J. Alexander. The restaurant offered us great service. The restaurant was well organized and clean. We ordered the spinach dip which is more like a cheese dip with spinach. My son enjoyed the prime rib. My daughter and I shared the fall off the bone ribs and they were mighty tasty. This used to be my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. Unfortunately the last three times I have been they have forgotten how to cook a steak. You can either get a steak blue or you can get a steak well done but God forbid you ask for anything in between. I haven't been in almost a year after two times of my steak coming out blue when I ordered it medium. Tonight, sure enough it came out blue again. I sent it back and it came back well done. I didn't have any visit from the management staff and the waitress was just like oh well that sucks. I will not be back. This is unfortunate as this used to be my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. Because I did not have a copy of my receipt or would not give the manager the last four digits of my credit card he refused to help me. It's sad to think I used to be the Duke here. read more
