I used to go to the one downtown in the late 80's and it was a trust system on paying. They gave you huge sandwiches, pickles at the table and it was good. I go to Izzy's once in a great while and to me it good every time. You still get the pickles and a smaller version of the sandwich to be in a reasonable cost range. They are not close to me so it's only when I am in the area where I think about eating there. I've ordered from one of the food delivery services and it's not the same eating it fresh as everything is soggy. read more

had izzy's delivered to work today. the new yorker sandwich with corned beef and pastrami was great! i wish it had a bit more meat as the toasted rye was great but felt a little much compared to the amount of meat on the sandwich, it had a little too much dressing as well for the amount of meat, but tbe bread was toasted perfectly and with a bit of brown mustard it all came together. i had finished half wanting more and went ahead and finished off the sandwich followed by pickles and the potato pancake. it was a very nice lunch today, im full but it didn't feel too heavy. the flavors were there and put me in a great mood to finish out my work day. read more

Love the food here, I wish more people realized the Queen City gem that is Izzy's! My wife's standard Rueben was as good as always. This was our second time at Izzy's. Portions are really good and the menu has something for everyone. They bring you a small bowl of pickles to start, which thrilled my husband. We then shared a corned beef Reuben and the pastrami Reuben. Both came with a huge potato pancake. Easily as big as your hand. Everything is very good. Meat is tasty and the dressing has a good flavor. Staff is great. They will always give suggestions when asked. Tomato basil soup was ok. Almost tasted like a marinara sauce. It's so nice to have Jewish food so close to me!!!! Thank you for existing, Izzy's!! I've only been once so far but it was phenomenal and I'll be back soon. Maybe tonight actually, because on Fridays only, they have matzo ball soup. I was confused when I first saw it, because it has what looks like a tomato-based broth. I've never seen that before. I quickly realized how delicious it is!! There were like 3 different types of noodles, vegetables, and the matzo ball was ravishing!! It's one of the best matzo ball soups I've had anywhere... very unexpected in Ohio honestly lol I also had a corned beef sandwich and I loaded it with lots of very Jewish flavor profile things... like olive tapenade (amazing) and pesto and like 3 different types of mustard and pickles... it was too overwhelming even for me! I can like drink mustard so it was amazing to be defeated by this sandwich. I'll go less maximalist next time. Oh and the potato pancake was greasy and amazing. Long time customer and fan of Izzy's but I had never tried their fish. Well, that all changed this past Friday evening. With a party of seven, six of us ordered Cod. We had 3 Codfather sandwiches, 2 Cod Tenders, 1 Roast Beef Sandwich, and 1 Cod Reuben. The Cod Reuben could have had a little more Reuben ingredients. Of course, some of us had Potato Pancakes, a couple cole slaws, and one had the Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup. So pleased with the Cod offerings, all the food was great. Ultimately, all plates were cleaned, all pickles on the table were gone, as was the extra sauerkraut we ordered. No carry-out containers for us! The ambiance is friendly, standard deli dining tables and chairs, and the restaurant is clean; so were the restrooms. The restaurant is easily accessible and has ample parking. read more

A one word review. Legendary. From a killer Reuben to the best matzo in Cincinnati. Izzy's is our new go to. We only managed a half dozen visits in our limited stay here. All a success. They serve generous portions including potato pancakes that are bigger than your hand. On one of my visits I ordered a pastrami and provolone. Try new things. She could tell I didn't like it and immediately took it away and dropped a really warm pastrami Reuben in front of me. When I told her that she didn't have to do that, she said it's cool, she'd eat the rest on her lunch break. Woah! All the waitstaff are terrific fun. So much so, we look forward to coming in. We had not gotten Izzy's in a while. So when my wife said "Let's get Izzy's.", I was a bit on the fence, but decided to go for it. The experience became unforgettable...but not for the right reason. The outside of Izzy's was pretty clean. The inside reminded me of one of those local joints with decent lighting and tvs. There was a good, relaxed vibe which I enjoyed. I was greeted by the friendly young lady at the counter. She took my order: (a Triple Play sandwich, a Codfather and an Izzy's Famous Reuben), and gave it to the staff, who were working on other orders. I returned home after receiving my food, and all was well. Why only one star? Because about 5 hours later, overnight and the next morning, our stomachs were sick. We realized we had gotten food poisoning, which in turn, ruined our Fourth of July. (We got the food on July 3rd). I used to enjoy Izzy's, but I, and my family, will not be getting anything else from there. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Skip this one. read more

Consistently delicious. The reuben on grilled bread is absolutely the best. The barley and chicken noodle soups are tasty as well.

I have loved Izzy's for 60 years but the quality today is not too good. This week I dined and the soup was good as always. The corned beef is do far from being home cooked like the real thing. texture of shaved Arby's. The horseradish had no flare. Very bland. First time trying Izzy's after seeing a review online. The staff couldn't have been any friendlier. They were welcoming and attentive to the customers that were there when I arrived. Had the COD REUBEN on a pretzel bun. Would definitely have it again. Not a big pickle fan but enjoyed those as well. The potato cake was larger than the sandwich. Stopped in here for dinner since it had been a while since I've had Izzy's. Went with the classic - the reuben with everything, dressing on the side, potato pancake. Sandwich came right out in less than 5 minutes...but that's where the it fell apart. The sandwich itself was forgettable - not what I remembered last time I was at an Izzy's. The bread wasn't toasted, the sauerkraut had zero flavor other than the vinegar, and the corned beef was underwhelming - almost plastic-like. The potato pancake was soggy, like it had been sitting around a while. Not crisp at all. I sat at the counter and the entire time I was eating, I kept swatting away what appeared to be fruit flies, or something the size thereof. Like, at least 3 the entire meal were vying the for the same food I was regretting stopping in for. That should've been an omen right there. Oh, that and the waitress yelling from the front of the house at the busboy in the back of the house who went into the back kitchen area yelling out some choice profanity (with a dining room full of patrons) because his bus tub was too heavy...good times. read more

If you ever had Lou and Hy's in Akron you would know the food is not very good at Izzy's. The potato pancake is very greasy here and the Rueben leaves a lot to be desired. It is very pricey also for what you get. I have found most diners do not know what is really good in Cincinnati as they are just used to it. read more

I ordered a quart of chicken soup and it was horrible. I ordered the chicken noodle soup and it was so inedible. it was so salty. I couldn't even stomach it! I also ordered the corn beef pastrami sandwich with Swiss and it was cold and fatty. I've also been to the Izzy's on red Bank and it was equally bad. Apparently the soup is catered from their catering area and so they said when I called to complain that it was the catering company's fault. I'm so unhappy I will never return. I ate lunch at the Forest Park location today. I hadn't been in quite some time so wasnt sure how it would be during covid. I ordered the pastrami Reuben which comes with a potato pancake. I also had a bowl of vegetable beef soup. Everything was cooked perfectly and the fresh pickles are always amazing. The service was perfect. There was just one server and she was pretty busy but she got everything quickly. I wish I had looked at her nametag but I forgot. I have to say even the restroom was sparkling clean. Greeted as we walked in. Been here once before a while ago. Probably a good thing I don't come often since the food is really good and portions are generous! Wife got the trio salad, I got the meatloaf sandwich. Both were very good. I really like the sauce on it. Just the right amount of tang and zip! Super fresh bread, two big slices of meatloaf. And the potato pancake that came with it was a nice change from fries or chips. Sorry, don't have details on the trip salad. Folks friendly and checked back on us. I found Izzy's on Yelp and we ordered takeout. We aren't local and I'd been looking for somewhere to try goetta. I found a Reuben on the menu with goetta and had slaw instead of sauerkraut. We also ordered a pastrami on a pretzel roll and the Codfather, which if you can't guess is a fish sandwich. All 3 came with a side, and of course we chose the potato pancake which they are known for. The pancakes are huge and probably could've been a meal by itself. They tasted good, but weren't like ones I've had before. These had chunks of potato in them like hash browns plus mashed potatoes were used. My family said the fish and pastrami sandwiches were very good. As far as the goetta goes, I think I'll pass. If you've never had it, to me it tasted more grain based than meat and tasted a little like plain ground beef. The Reuben would've been better by itself, not to mention the goetta made it a giant mess to eat in the car. But at least I tried it and I'm sure those goetta lovers out there would've loved it (maybe just not in a car). I had the Reuben and potato pancakes. Those pancakes were bigger than the palm of my hand and so delicious. What I really loved was that you had your choice of having your sandwich grilled or toasted. A lot of other places just put the Reuben on cold rye bread. It was delicious and it met every expectation that I had. I will definitely go back there. Let me start by saying this review is actually more like a 4.4. Loved our meals! My child got the kids meal turkey sandwich with applesauce. She ate the whole thing throughout the day, it was a lot of food! My husband got the traditional Ruben and loved it. I got the turkey Ruben and we both decided it was amazing bc the bread wasn't as soggy as the rye. We weren't crazy fans of the potato pancake but then again we got the food to go so maybe it was a little soggy by the time we got home. Either way, service was great! We'll be back to try more things. Servings are laaaaarge so looking at the prices it's worth it to get the full rather than half size read more

What is going on at the Forest Park Izzys? We come here about twice a month and usually have excellent food and service...not today. First I asked for diet Dr Brown's cream soda. I was brought a dark fountain drink. The server said that is was cream soda. (Cream soda is NOT dark!) Then she brought me a can of cream soda...but not diet. Finally got it right but no glass of ice or straw. Our soups came out with almost no broth-just noodles. It didn't even look like soup. Server said it was the way the guy poured it. We think maybe the server was new...but are you not familiar with what soup looks like??? There's a lot of liquid broth in it! We send the soup back. A few minutes later our food came out...but wait. We ordered 2 cod sandwiches. One on wheat with mayo instead of tartar sauce and a slice of provolone. The other a standard cod sandwich on rye with tartar. We got...two cod sandwiches on bread. No Tartar, no mayo, no provolone. Wth??? Server brought out sides of mayo and tartar. I couldn't even open the mayo packets so I just went without. And the provolone. They were apparently out of provolone. She was able to find a few slices of Swiss for me. Would have been better melted on my sandwich but at this point, it's whatever. While we were eating, our soup with broth came back out...lukewarm. Not thrilled. My husband has now been waiting to pay for like 5 minutes now. There is not even a line other than to go orders. Izzy's is a Cincinnati staple. Their reubens are well known and creative. This particular trip I had an egg salad Reuben which did not disappoint. I've also had their Goetta (get-ah) reuben (Goetta is another Cincinnati specialty) and their pastrami reuben. With any sandwich you get a giant potato pancake. Beware, they're greasy... but so so so good with the German mustard. Also served with everything are their garlic pickles. Totally worth the price of entry. Izzy's just celebrated its 100 year anniversary as a restaurant established all over Cincinnati and its longevity is well deserved. Izzy's is a restaurant with a deli feel and its specialty is its array of sandwiches and especially its Reuben. The sandwiches are generous and there is no whiff of health awareness to be found, which can be a good or bad thing depending on who you are. The sandwich is then coupled with their other specialty, a big, greasy, delicious potato pancake. The pancake is crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Oh man it's good. You can then douse the potato pancake in a ranch powder that might need to be classed as a sub-specialty. It gives it a great test. My favorite specialty, though, is the containers sitting on the tables that are filled to the brim with Izzy's signature pickles. As a huge fan of pickles I love being able to reach into there and take out as many as I like. The service isn't always the best but the reason being is that it's usually pretty busy, and who can fault them? A genuinely unique dining experience that is built around signature dishes, Izzy's is worth visiting. read more
