It's a family owned business. We ordered an appetizer, a few special rolls, and a miso cod fish entree. The Shichimi salmon was maybe the best part of the meal. I think I got the Mango Hawaii, Ocean roll, and something else. The rolls tasted pretty similar. I saw it recommended but it's basically salmon with some sweet chili sauce on top. We didn't expect that.. it's an odd combo. Tasted cheap.. I forced L to try a lil bite of the miso cod and he said it tasted a lil old. Its ok.. I've def had better even. I mean I don't expect Nobu/other exp restaurant quality fish ... it is what is.. it was one of our cheaper meals we've had at a restaurant but we felt it was a lil overpriced compared to the quality we're used to. There was a family eating dinner at a table near us and they seemed to enjoy their food.. Maybe I should've just ordered regular rolls since it's more of a local spot.

But at last, as I searched on DoorDash I stumbled upon this glorious restaurant they call Izakaya Fuku. I was drawn to the adorable names for their sushi roll dishes like "Strawberry Fields" and their Italian Japanese fusion pasta dishes, "Creamy Mentaiko Bacon Pasta" with creamy mayonnaise, spicy cod roe and bacon like are you kidding me? It's a bummer I wasn't more hunger or that I didn't have more bucks in my wallet because I wanted all these dishes. And the Chirashi Don, god it looks so beautiful the way that it's arranged in the photos online. I finally decided on the carbonara. And I was drawn to the fact that it was udon based. Now, I've just been living in hawaii these past years so that Japanese twist on an Italian dish that I just love oh so much really brought me back to missing the islands and the Asian spins they had on cuisines. Now my food may have not come in a jiffy but for after midnight cravings I'd say it was well worth the wait. And my oh my the portion was huge!!!! I slurped that big boy up. It was SOOO delicious and savory. I love comfort food and this had me in carbonara heaven. I loved indulging into every single last bite. By the looks of the picture the restaurant looks lovely, I'd love to stop there and try it in person. Thank you. Thank you! My belly and my heart are very much satisfied.

Intimate setting where you can really enjoy your dinner and company and also get to know the owners. Family owned and taken care of very well. All the food here is fresh and delicious and creative. Not your standard NYC Japanese restaurant but they take care to all their dishes. Highlights were the special tofu dish and toro salad. Tempura were all made well and not oily. Great katsu and anything on the sushi menu was divine. Love the toro, yellowtail, and sea urchin. Can't go wrong with either the nigiri or sashimi choices. A wonderful alcohol selection as well with special items i've never seen before but very refreshing were the green tea beer and the yuzu beer. A gem in forest hills and a must try. First of all, we couldn't find the place because there is no signage. I guess that's part of the "charm"? But literally when we found it we didn't even know if the place was open. The gates were down, the windows were basically covered and nothing about the place was welcoming. We realized they were in fact open so we approached the door. We were greeted by a piece of paper stating "reservations only". We entered anyway and the place was EMPTY. There was one couple seated but other than that the place was EMPTY. The hostess approached us and I asked her if we needed a reservation and she said we did. So we said ok we'll come back another time and then she said, " well since it's pretty quiet tonight we can seat you." We should have left. We were in there for about an hour give or take and no one else came in at all. At all. Anyways, we ordered our food. I ordered the sashimi plate and my husband ordered a couple rolls. We also ordered the crab and avocado salad and the hamachi kama. Everything was basic. Nothing was amazing...oh except the price of the hamachi kama. Menu said market price and I get it, that means the price will fluctuate accordingly, but $60 for the hamachi kama? I almost fell off my chair when the bill came. I have eaten at very high end sushi restaurants and am almost 50 years old. I have never had a $60 hamachi kama. This one wasn't even tasty!!! It was not good or flavorful. Tasted like they just defrosted and microwaved it. I was wondering why i kept hearing a microwave go off but realized after the fact that that's what they must have done. I did not complain. We paid the bill. We left. Later that night I had stomach issues. Nicest way I can put that. I will say that i ate almost nothing that day so I can only attribute the stomach issues to the sushi. Needless to say we will not be back.

The strawberry part was more like a jam, so it was a little sweet for me, but overall a decent drink. I would have preferred crushed strawberries, though. Later, I came back for dinner at the tail end of the day. I was leaning towards the beef curry bowl because I like bolder flavors, but the karaage chicken is a hit here, so I ordered that in bowl form. First off, all the contents were very fresh! The chicken pieces were crisp and tasty. The burdock on the side had a smoky umami that was quite nice - it was the best of the 3 sides - and the spicy mayo was on point. Still, I think I would have gone with the curry given my taste buds, but overall the karaage bowl is a solid choice. Lastly, while the container looks small in circumference, it is taller than other takeout containers, so the portions are really about the same as any other restaurant. The nori fries were subtle in flavor but the nori still made its presence known. All in all it was a great experience. The owners are very nice, also. I will go back for the curry and yakiniku, too.

The karaage seems to be made fresh to order every time and it's the perfect balance of crisp, light, and moist little nuggets of fried chicken. You can't go wrong with any of the hand rolls or onigiri, either. I love the takana (mustard greens) onigiri and the spicy tuna and salmon avocado are my favorite from the hand rolls. The junior size of the bowl is the perfect snack-sized portion of food. The grilled unagi and the salmon ikura junior bowls are my favorite. I haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but I will be sure to! The service at Hi Node is so friendly. The staff greets everyone and they are so warm and welcoming. There's not a ton of indoor seating, but I've always managed to get a seat to either enjoy my food there or to wait while it's prepared and take it to go. So excited to add Hi Node to my regular rotation of Ridgewood restaurants!

It's been open for a few years, so clearly it has a good enough formula to keep the neighborhood happy. I have been here once before, but returned last week after dining several meals at Tomoni in Jackson Heights. Apparently, the owners are friends. Nonetheless, I needed to make the comparison. After my first few bites of their Tora Don and Chirashi Don, it was clear that this restaurant has the better quality seafood. Each slice of sashimi had vibrant colors, clean taste, and the proper texture. Tomoni is not bad, but fall slightly short of this caliber. With that said, there is an even farther gap between their rice quality. Though Tora is very good, Tomoni produces nearly perfect texture and acidity for my taste buds. Other than the best omakase restaurants in NYC, Tomoni shines as one of the best versions of sushi rice in the five boroughs. Service is good and space is cute. If I have a craving for some decent Japanese food, I would drive 20 minutes here for a meal anytime.
