If you don't want to waste time and actually realize your mission of finding the perfect rug, which is akin to looking for a needle in a haystack at times, go to Istanbul Rug and ask for Ogi stat. Being a first time and younger buyer, I was warned by my friends that searching for the right hand knotted rug will be a daunting task. And right they were. I was at my wit's end trying to find someone who would not suffocate me with hard sell tactics and honestly listen to what I was looking for while respecting my budget. After an unpleasant experience at another rug store, I admit I was reluctant when I stepped foot into Istanbul Rug. Lady Luck was on my side when I met Ogi on a Sunday (in Berkeley), who wasn't even supposed to be there since he's usually in the San Rafael location. Ogi is a personable and masterful communicator - the quintessential professional who has a photographic memory of every rug in his inventory. If you want something, he'll find a way to work with you. If you have questions, he'll patiently explain it to you. He streamlined the entire rug buying process while making me feel valued by proactively following up with my inquiries via text. I was initially looking for a Sultanabad for just the living room but with Ogi saving me 4 trips by kindly bearing bridge traffic and toll and driving to my house with endless rug options, I ended up buying another Kazak for the dining room at a very reasonable price. Unparalleled customer service at this otherworldly level is absolutely mind-blowing. I've officially been bitten by the rug bug and am glad I found Rug Ambassador Ogi to help with future rug hunts. read more

Need to unfortunately update my review Started off a 5 star experience Once the drive away it goes to one star Won't honor the included padding and delivery. Spent an incredible amount of money at this place and can't get them to include a pad for a runner Great selection and poor service once they have your check in hand - sad to say but I recommend going somewhere else read more

The service is amazing. Mike is very friendly and insisted on coming to my home to pick up a small rug for cleaning. I was happy he did b/c they had to move a fairly heavy dining room table to get it. The rug is beautiful since it was cleaned. Would post a pic, but this review site won't accommodate. read more

This rug is beautiful! It's actually Arts and Craft style which I love. Ogi brought it to my home, put a pad underneath, and it feels very cozy on my feet. I've gotten many compliments on it already. I would shop here again. Ogi and his brother were very Covid conscious. I felt comfortable having them inside my house. Pauline B. read more

Istanbul Rug - Area rug 6'x8' - Rugs Near Me - San Rafael, California

Paid over $1,000 to get my rug cleaned and when I picked it up they just threw it in the back of my car. Would've expected them to roll it up and offer some sort of protection. When asked about rug protector to go under it was told would be given a quote of $4 sq foot rather than $8... so $542 at a 50% discount. Way over priced. Disappointed in this experience, def not white glove. Will take my other rugs elsewhere. read more

Istanbul Rug - Paid over $1,000 to get my rug cleaned and they literally threw it in the back of my car. - Rugs Near Me - San Rafael, California

I had two very expensive Persian rugs that needed cleaning. After reading the stellar reviews, I decided to start out with one rug. The proprietor estimated a 2 week turnaround. When 3 1/2 weeks passed and still no rug I became concerned, needless to say. A friend was even whispering that perhaps they'd lost the rug. Eventually the call came in that my rug was ready. When I went to pick it up they apologized profusely, saying several workers were out sick, delaying my order. And to make amends, though not asked for, they comped the cleaning - no charge! I was stunned. Needless to say I took the other rug in to be cleaned and they got it done in a week! This is a 4- generation, family- run business in a beautiful storefront with numerous beautiful rugs for sale. Have no fear- these guys are the real deal!! read more

I just moved into San Francisco not too long ago and wanted something to brighten up my living room, as well as something to match my furniture. Initially I came into this store just to window shop, but I was impressed by what I saw. This store is gorgeous in every aspect and the way they set up the displays made it easy to browse through. The salesman, Ogi, helped me look through everything they had and eventually we picked out a beautiful Persian rug. The rug not only looks amazing, but the textile is quality, something you cannot get from a lot of commercial places. Overall I am very satisfied with the quality of the rug and the customer service of the staff. read more

The new Istanbul Rug is in West End of San Rafael in the old Bananas Music store location with giant windows which allow you to see the amazing number of rugs there in natural light. There's also a huge amount of room in the center which enables you to see multiple rugs side by side , making for easy comparison. The owner Ogi is a 2nd generation rug dealer, continuing in the family business with a terrific personality & lots of knowledge. I highly recommend you stop in, even just for a look-see - the interior design is fabulous & you may even end up with a great rug, like I did! read more

Great experience with Mehmet! Very helpful and easy to work with. I'm really happy with the rug he helped me find.

Istanbul Rug is hands down my go to place for all of my rug needs! I am an interior designer in Marin and the staff at Istanbul rug has been so knowledgeable and helpful with so many of my projects. It is a family business that knows everything imaginable about rugs because they have been in the rug business for four generations! It amazes me how all of the staff can simply look at a rug and tell you where it was made, the knot count, what dying and weaving process went into making it, etc. They are not only knowledgeable, but incredibly friendly and professional. I often bring my clients in to view potential rugs while enjoying a Turkish coffee to give them the full experience when shopping for the ideal rug for their space. I highly recommend this business and have nothing but good things to say about them! read more

I needed my Qum rug cleaned by hand & I was as referred to Istanbul Rug in San Rafael. Mike gave us a quote on cleaning the rug & the spots that would need attention. He picked up the rug & said it would be washed by hand & dried in special drying rooms, it would take about 5-6 weeks. They only required 1/2 the quote as the down payment. 5 weeks later I received a call from Mike that he & Alex would drop it off at the day & time of our convenience. How nice! Mike was very informative on the background of the rug. I learned a lot. I highly recommend Istanbul Rug for hand perfection cleaning of your oriental rugs. read more

I'm verI had a very good experience with Mehmet, who patiently showed me dozens of rugs in the store and then brought several rugs to our house. Thank you, Mehmet. We are very, very happy with our rug. read more

Thanks, Ogi and team, for connecting us with three beautiful rugs! We've had them for several weeks now, and I love them a little more every day. Hard to say which is my favorite. I love the large family room rug because it magically looks just a little different almost very time I walk into the room, depending on the exterior light. It's a treat each morning I come upstairs to see what "mood" it will present. But the amazingly soft and smooth beauty next to the bed is also a treat each time my bare feet slide across it. Ogi did a wonderful job bringing a few of our selections to try out in our space and even added a few to consider that he picked based on our descriptions of our home and the rugs we thought would work. My husband and I ended up buying one we had initially selected, and two of his suggestions. His team also had helpful input as we considered options, and they more than earned their keep working through the rug stacks and hauling around the wares! All were eager to educate us about the industry and what distinguished the various rugs and styles. We had a great time shopping at Istanbul Rug and recommend you do the same. As San Rafael residents living nearby, we are happy to have the store as a new neighbor. Ogi and co. have made beautiful use of the old Bananas at Large space, and its a pleasure to pass by seeing the beautiful rugs displayed in the windows. Do yourself a favor and stop in for a closer look. read more

Our dark red Turkish hall runner needed cleaning and fringe repair. Greeted by Ogi T (owner) and an associate. Quite an out going and friendly guy. Rolled out the runner, Ogi inspected it, told him I wanted it cleaned and the fringe at one end repaired. No problem. Ten days later the runner was available to pickup - colors in the runner are more vibrant now after it's cleaning. Great service in a friendly atmosphere! Thanks, Ogi. read more

Just fair warning, this place smells like mothballs. I want to put that out there before anything else because it surprised me as I walked into the room. That first step aside, this place is AMAZING. The place is ginormous, a great big open space with a selection wall to wall and stacked on the floor. Everywhere you look there are beautifully made pieces of art laid out or hanging. I was bouncing around like a pin ball looking at this piece and that piece trying to look at it all. I think they have one that can fill most people's whole living room. They said it took 4 year to make and it was impeccable. The detail on the patterns were exquisite. I'll try to make sure to load the video of it. It's a bit too big for our space but WOW! We walked in looking for a rug to go in the living room of our remodeled mid-century modern home. The red had to be really deep to fit the other decor. Ogi worked through two piles of rugs until we fund just the right one: a modern design made for them in Nepal. The colors are gorgeous, deep red, caramel and tan. We couldn't be happier with the rug or the sales experience. read more

Called today to get advice on securing an area rug on top of my oriental rug. Although I wasn't calling as a prospective customer (although that will likely change now), Ogi provided expert advice in a patient, friendly manner. His main concern was to ensure I didn't make any mistake that may damage either rug. He opined on different options, offered to review photos, and invited me to call back with any additional questions. Ogi was generous with his time, and it's obvious that he is passionate about handmade rugs. read more

Yelp novice gives Istanbul Rug 5 stars I've never done a Yelp opinion so hope this conveys my great appreciation for the service we received at Istanbul Rug in San Rafael a week ago. I've never seen so many beautiful rugs in one place. It's the ideal location with the perfect way to display their massive selection. The team, owner, Ogi, Mehmet & Ali were so helpful and made us feel they had all the time in the world for us. My husband thought I didn't need to see "all" the contemporary rugs but was grateful to them for being patient with the time it took for me to select the beautiful Tibetan silk rug that now lays in our FR. They treated us and our choices with great respect and made the experience very personal. This is such a wonderful rug business. Ogi and his colleagues gave us great service from the get-go; were helpful and very patient with our decision-making process as is important with purchases like these that will touch our life every day for a very long time. We picked rugs to try in our home. They brought several options for each room and helped us to choose which was the best, changing them all out one-by-one while we thought about it. They left the rugs with us to try them out and decide and they gave us good prices. They also noticed some rugs we had here that were in need of attention; and they picked up those rugs, brought them to the shop, brightened up the dyes and resewed them where needed, all in a reasonable time frame. Additionally, they were very knowledgable about the provenance of each rug and told us things we hadn't known about our own rugs that gave us new appreciation for them. I recommend them highly. read more

I went to Istanbul Rug to see if they could repair a growing hole in a small rug I bought in India. The carpet is a bit rustic, but it has deep sentimental value to me, and I've had it for 25 years. Istanbul Rug explained my options, which were to re-weave the entire section (very expensive) or try to patch the area. I chose the latter, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I just knew I wasn't ready to give up on the carpet. Within a few weeks, they had repaired and cleaned the carpet, and I can't believe how great it looks! It was so much better than I anticipated, especially since I went with the less expensive approach. I'm really thrilled with the results, and I'm happy I spent to money to preserve something that is special to me. Thank you, Istanbul Rug! Such great work! read more

I called Istanbul Rug as I pulled out a rug I inherited, out of our crawl space. Wanted a professional opinion on the state of the rug and what could/should be done. Ogi, the Owner, did not hesitate and drove all the way to our place to take a look and give his professional advice. He recognized my type of rug right away which I really appreciated. I then had it cleaned and repaired by their company. They kept me informed throughout the process of the steps they were taking, and how it was going. The end result is beautiful! Rug got itself a second life! Ogi and his team in their beautiful store, were so helpful and caring. They definitely know rugs and took care of my and my rug's needs! Highly recommend. I bought not one but two rugs from Ogi, the owner. He and his associate Errol were terrific. They are funny and of course trying to make a sale but they genuinely care about getting you the rug that's best for you. They came to deliver our rug and brought three other rugs that we liked, just so we could see them in our home. They moved couches, coffee tables, etc., to help us see what the different rugs would look like in our home. So kind of them. And he gave us a generous deal.
