We just picked up our freshly reupholstered side chairs. They were seriously used as scratching posts by our cats and Heidi did a marvelous job reviving them. They have huge sentimental value to me arriving from Sweden in 1980 with me. Heidi guided us among the variety of materials that "may" hold up to cat abuse but still look nice, she also put on a protective and removeable layer in front where cats tend to concentrate their work. Kathleen and Heidi rejuvenated a set of 2 chairs and a sofa that I bought many years ago from faded and dated to beautiful, up-to-date and more comfortable! While my set has good bones, it was long overdue for a fresh, up-to-date fabric, firmer, higher cushions and a restructure of the over-wide sofa arms, to be closer to today's sleeker styles. I investigated buying new furniture, but I found the quality of construction inferior to my older items, the fabric choices limited and bland, no choice in foam firmness, or if a choice, not usually a sample of all options to try before buying. Sofa sizes were either too small or too large for my space. The more I shopped for new, the more apparent it became that re-upholstering my old favorites was the only way to get exactly what I wanted. Kathleen and Heidi were a pleasure to work with as they guided me through this transformation beginning with the fabric selection. They asked me some questions to help me narrow down the overwhelming number of choices, and ordered several samples for me to compare in my home. When the work began, I went to their shop for a couple of design sessions where they put foam samples on my now-bare furniture frames so I could try out firmness and seat height. They showed what could be done to make the sofa arms sleeker, thoroughly explained and demonstrated how the pattern of the fabric would look when installed. They also made great design suggestions, such as replacing the feet on each piece and staining them to better coordinate with new fabric. Kathleen and Heidi are truly craftswomen, with not only an eye for beautiful design, but the hands-on skills to make it happen. I got exactly what I wanted: a lovely, up-to-date, beautifully crafted, more comfortable living room set with a gorgeous, but durable fabric in a pattern and color scheme that I look forward to enjoying for many years to come! My initial experience with North Bay Interiors started out great! I called NB and spoke with Heidi, by phone, about having a chair and ottoman reupholstered and was told to email pictures of the chair/ottoman and the dimensions. I received the estimate two days later and I responded that I would like to have NB reupholster the chair. I went to NB the following week, which was two days ago. Both Kathleen and Heidi were friendly and showed me a number of fabric patterns based on what I am looking for and they let me take home five fabric books so that I could get a better feel for what the patterns would look like in my home. The chair that I would like to get reupholstered, was my father's chair and he passed away last year. This chair is extremely sentimental to me and it is very important that I choose a fabric/design that I love and that my father would have loved as well. My husband and I narrowed the fabrics down to three, but they did not have the full wow factor we were hoping for, so we decided to look online for fabrics and we ordered three samples, from Wayfair, that seemed to be closer to what we are looking for in a design. While online, my husband decided to look up one of NB's samples as he thought I misunderstood the price per yard and found the fabric for $57 per yard plus free shipping, which surprised us as NB had quoted us $88 per yard. The chair/ottoman requires 12 yards of fabric and that is a difference of $372. This is the first piece of furniture I have wanted or needed to reupholster, so I wasn't sure of all the details and if we could bring in "outside fabric" to NB or if they would be willing to give us some sort of discount if we ended up choosing their fabric that is $88 per yard. Today I went back to NB to return the sample books and spoke with Kathleen. I told Kathleen that we had narrowed our choices down and that I had ordered a few samples from Wayfair. Kathleen immediately told me that they do not usually take "outside" fabric and that if they did, there would be a markup (about 15%). I then showed Kathleen the $88 per yard fabric design and told her that my husband thought I misunderstood the price per yard and looked it up online and was surprised to find such a difference in price. Kathleen became very defensive and condescending as she stated that she needs to keep her business running, maintain her house and get her teeth fixed. Kathleen also stated that my husband was ridiculous for questioning the difference in prices. I was shocked and taken aback by her comments and told her that it isn't ridiculous and that I found her to be rude. She told me that I was being rude to question her prices and that her prices are what they are, and that labor is included in the price of the fabric. I questioned that because NB had already quoted $1,375 for labor to upholster the chair and she responded that they do not know what fabric will be chosen is when quoting the labor. She then proceeded to tell me that I was more than welcome to go elsewhere to have my chair reupholstered. I am well aware of the fact that I can take my business elsewhere and promptly told Kathleen that I would do so gladly. I totally understand that a business needs to make money, but this wasn't a question about a $50 difference, it was a question about a $372 difference, which is very reasonable question. Kathleen's reaction was very unprofessional and quite offensive. Regardless of what Kathleen was thinking, she could have politely explained the situation to me without insulting my husband or being condescending and rude. Prior to Kathleen's comments, I had every intention to have my chair reupholstered at NB and was very excited to do so. In order to have a successful business, there has to be great customer service in addition to a great work product. Based on Kathleen's behavior, it is obvious that NB is lacking in the customer service department and I will gladly take my business to another company that will respectfully answer my questions and politely explain their procedures without being insulting. While I am very disappointed with this situation, I am glad that it happened as I do not want to give my hard earned money to a company that would treat a customer or potential customer in such an unprofessional, demeaning manner. So if you value customer service and how you are treated, you should definitely take your business to another interior company because how you are initially treated at NB isn't necessarily how you will be treated throughout the process. read more

From there web site;"We stock premium quality items from well-established manufacturers" total B.S I had some chairs done by them that failed in less than a year. When confronted with this they would not stand behind there work even though there was a warranty on the fabric. read more

Kathleen is AMAZING. My dog ate the back of one of my 3 leather sofa pillows. The sofa was the biggest purchase in my home so needless to say, I really needed to repair this pillow if at all possible. Kathleen looked at a few photos I sent over and was like "I can do it", and she did. She exceeded my expectations on time, price, and the quality of the work. Kathleen and her team re-upholstered and rebuilt 11 pieces of furniture plus made Duvet's and other items. All we can say is that our experience could not have been better or the craftsmanship used to bring these pieces back to life, better. The pieces were very well built, high quality, mid-century sofas, love seats and chairs. When Kathleen was finished, we did not recognize them. The old adage to "buy new furniture because it does not pay to reupholster" is not true if have quality furniture to start with.. My wife and i cannot recommend North Bay Interiors more highly. I'm so glad I brought my foot stool here. It is an interesting mid-century piece that was covered in white vinyl that I'm very fond of but was pretty beat up after 60 or so years of use. I wanted the recovered stool to look just like it had. Kathleen had a nice selection of different shades of white vinyl to choose from. I picked it up this week and I'm thrilled with the results! It looks marvelous. Just the way I wanted it to look. They also polished up the scuffed wooden legs. I will definitely be bring more furniture here! read more
