My first experience at Isshin. I loved their spicy tuna and fried rice. The restaurant looked nice and clean. I chose carry out. The Hostess, Arriana, was very nice and courteous when I called in my order, and she was also helpful when I was asking questions about sushi. Arriana made a suggestion of Hibachi scallops, which I will try next time. I am very happy there is a delicious sushi place in my new town of Fairview as I will be leaving a favorite sushi place in Illinois and I love sushi! So glad my neighbor recommended Isshin! So the old Chinese buffet in Fairview has opened up as a Japanese restaurant. My dad decided that for Father's Day we should give it a try. Hey, why not? Japanese in Fairview? Ok! So we got there pretty early for dinner. FYI that they are open 7 days a week but they close from like 3-4:30 every day so if you eat at weird times you should keep this in mind. The interior is actually pretty nice. Dark ceiling tiles, dark woods, highlighted with Asian decor. Pretty classy looking joint for the 'view. So atmosphere gets an A. As for food they have sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls, and also hibachi offerings. Note that the hibachi offerings aren't cooked in front of you with an entertaining chef, but are brought from the kitchen. Since we had 5 people we ordered up a bunch of things and gave it a whirl. Gyoza dumplings with pork were really good - we gobbled these up. Crab rangoon - ummm...fried goodness with creamy crab inside....who doesn't love this. Calamari - standard. Not sure this is Japanese but the breading was really crispy and good. They were in circles only, a bit chewy inside, but not terribly so. I got the sushi and sashimi dinner with 9 pieces sashimi, 5 pieces sushi, and a tuna roll. That was only $19 which isn't too shabby for as much as you get. Is it knock your socks off sushi? No, but it wasn't bad either. And I'm not currently throwing up from food poisoning so it was fresh enough. Overall pretty satisfying. My brother got a bunch of different rolls and he liked them for the most part, so there's that. He only eats the cooked rolls though so if you are looking for raw you should get the sushi/sashimi. You can also order that a la carte if you want. Chicken hibachi was actually really good and I heard the steak was too. Comes with soup (miso) and salad. For 5 people to eat sushi and also hibachi was $100. NOT TOO SHABBY as I have been known to spend $100 for just 2 people when having sushi. So there's that! Also, I must sadly note, no booze. Or at least, no booze that I could see. Maybe they will work on their beer/liquor license. Maybe they won't....just go to La Plaza Mexican to booze it up I guess! Overall I hope this place does well and keeps the quality up. It was fairly busy in there so I think even the folks out in Fairview like Japanese food. And they don't have to drive all the way to Nashville to get it now! read more

I live in the area and my wife and I eat at Isshin about once a month. It's basically your run of the mill Japanese restaurant. Nothing too amazing but also will hit the spot if you're looking for some decent Japanese food. There are definitely better places out there. After my last visit there, it will probably be a while before I go back. My wife and I are easy to please, especially given that she was a waitress for years and has an appreciation for the position. We were our young waitress's only table but we never received the soups and salads that came with our dinner. She sat down 2 booths away with what appeared to be her boyfriend as she paid us no mind the whole time, only bringing out the appetizer and dinner when they were ready and nothing more. We mentioned we did not get those items when dinner arrived, but we no longer wanted them since dinner is ready. We asked if perhaps our $4 appetizer could be removed from the bill as compensation for not receiving everything with our order. She said she'd talk to her manager. She came back, but didn't follow-up with us and sat back down with her boyfriend instead. Eventually we were told indirectly that the manager would not agree to our request and said we can take soup and salad to go, which we didn't want. The waitress was very young and didn't really seem to know what to say or do, didn't apologize, nothing. When it came time to collect our bill, she sent the hostess since she was seemingly too embarrassed to face us, but it's worth noting we were not irate or rude in any way and were trying to calmly take care of a reasonable request. The hostess knew what went on and vaguely asked how was everything. When we told her, she said the waitress wanted to take care of this but "they have a strict manager who would not allow it". So basically this "strict manager" did nothing to take care of the situation and did not even come over to talk to us for 2 seconds to at least apologize if nothing else. This person must have stayed hidden in the back. The waitress never apologized either. Overall, this was not a major situation by any means and our request was simple, but the way everyone reacted like they did not care at all was off-putting. None of the waitresses or hostesses had any sort of smile or anything the whole time we were there, so maybe they are not working in a very good environment which spills over to the customers? When we got up to leave, nobody said "bye" or "thank you" like usual and everyone just sort of avoided us. I'd understand if there was some big scene, but there was not at all and this was a very minor situation. On top of that, usually the sushi we get there is good and I really enjoy sushi. Some of the pieces were definitely still a little frozen which was a first for us, I've never experienced that at any place that serves sushi. So, I'm not saying I'll never go back, but it will be longer than usual for sure. Maybe it was just an off night? read more

The sushi itself is OK here, and the atmosphere and decor are actually quite lovely. Unfortunately, the service is sub-par, and will keep me from coming back. Called in an order for sushi to go this evening - was told it would be 20 - 25 minutes as it was a Friday night. No problem, understand completely. Did a little shopping at the cheapy grocery store next door, then went to pick up my to go order, 40 minutes after I called. Went in and stood at the front desk to get my carry out; I could see a bag there, but couldn't tell it it was my order. Unbelievably, however, I sat for 5 solid minutes without a single employee even acknowledging my presence. A waitress came to the desk, pulled her ticket, rang it up, pulled change, then left without a word. Not a single employee could even be bothered with - "Someone will be right with you!" The sushi chef had started watching me at this point, but he had a couple at his bar, and two plates waiting to be picked up. Both owners at one point walked out from one kitchen door, through the front, and back around to the kitchen through the other door. He was, I could tell, in the midst of cooking; she was, I found out later, making tea. (7:30 on a Friday night, I applaud them for at least trying to make more, having apparently had a rush on it earlier.) Finally, a waitress came to the desk to ring up a ticket and asked if "she" was helping me with my to-go order. Told her no - I'd been there for 5 solid minutes and she was the first to utter a word to me. She asked me what I ordered, then the phone then rang. She answered it, then leaned over to check the ticket on the bag. She moved the phone away from her mouth, told me it wasn't ready yet - "He's still working on it" then went back to the phone call. Wow - 45 minutes after the order was called in, and fully 20 minutes past the time I was told it would be ready, and it STILL wasn't ready? And waiting at the desk and never even being acknowledged, despite more than 6 employees right there, at the desk or back and forth in front if it? Sorry, unacceptable. I left, got in my car, and headed home. Decided to call the restaurant to let them know he can stop working on the order - it had been 45 minutes and I had left. Whoever answered the phone didn't seem to understand, so she put one of the owners on - which is how I came to find out she had been making tea. "No no, your order is ready, it's here!" She tells me - after the waitress had checked the bag already and clearly told me it wasn't. Sorry - already a minute from home at this point, and not heading back. If they can't get it together any better than this, I have no hard feelings for leaving the order if, in fact, it actually was ready. (And SHAME on that waitress if it was!) Here's the bottom line. I am quite certain my $25 sushi order on a Friday night doesn't mean a hill of beans to these owners. What should matter to them, however, are all the $25 and up orders that they will not be getting from me in the future. (The last time my husband and I went there together, about 6 months ago, our bill was $95 before tip.) Too expensive to go out to eat, with drinks, tips, etc to have such dismal service. read more

Don't let the outside of the building fool you! The outside was not welcoming at all, but we decided to take a chance. Once inside, you feel like you're in a 5 star restaurant. The food was excellent. We often eat at Nori in Dickson, but I now like Isshin better. The chicken hibachi was excellent and so was their sushi. I would highly recommend. Really decent rolls - very fresh. Edamame was crisp and cooked perfectly. Gyoza surprisingly good. Special rolls were pricey but regular rolls very reasonably priced. Even the sodas were the right mixture - haha. read more

I love this place! The lunch prices are wonderful. The sushi is great. My favorite is the Pink Dragon roll. Other favorites include the ginger salad, gyoza, and the hibachi steak, and bento box. If you went to the Chinese Buffet that was the previous restaurant, you will be shocked at the remodel they did inside. Atmosphere is definitely classy. read more

Front desk receptionist is RUDE. We only go to Isshin because the next closest sushi is 45 minutes away. Way over priced for the amount of food you get. It's almost twenty dollars per person which is ridiculous, it's less expensive in green hills or belle Meade, and the service is much better there. They always forget things in the to go orders, and their sushi is falling apart in box bc they rush through it so fast. read more

This is by far my favorite sushi place on the west side of Nashville. The spicy tuna rolls are a good example of how they are very generous with the fish part of the rolls (3 times more fish in there than any other place I've been to) and the perfect temperature. I haven't had everything on the menu, but the spicy fish type rolls, california rolls, edamame, miso soup, all wonderful. Great service, very clean, doesn't break the bank. Pretty good food for a decent price! Super nice folks who work hard to please. The service was great and the décor was quite refreshing. I would have eaten Sushi if they had offered brown rice which was surprising?! I am not a fan of sweet sauce on my vegetables, hibachi shrimp or chicken and would have preferred some fresh herbs instead and have any sauce be served on the side. Luckily they were very nice to accommodate me by leaving it off and even gave me a nice ginger sauce to try on the side. I loved it! I had Salmon once and it was rather mushy and overcooked but I never gave them another chance so it may be better now. For my taste, I'd prefer very light seasoning and fresh herbs instead of salty or sweet sauces. I think the people are wonderful and Isshin is a nice addition to Fairview. Well worth the price and you can't help but be warmed by the nice people who own it! read more

Okay. So for FAIRVIEW I give it four and a half stars. But compared to sushi/ Japanese restaurants such as Sonobana, Samurai, Kyoto, and Ken's in nearby Bellevue and Nashville it is 2 stars at best. FOOD: I got the Philadelphia, AAC, and the Spicy Shrimp Temp with a side of fried rice. The fried rice was horrible, dry with huge chunks of onion hardly any egg and no snow peas or carrots. The salmon in the Philadelphia was smoked well, but was a tad dry. You can't really go wrong with the AAC(Avocado, Asparagus, and Cucumber) so it was good, and the Spicy Shrimp Temp was delicious but has imitation crab in it just a heads up because some people do not like imitation crab. NOTE: All of these were 6 piece rolls but the spicy shrimp temp was only 5? I have no idea what that was about. It was good, for the price I suppose. Their sauces seem to be homemade and the spicy mayo was perfect so no complaints there. SERVICE: Service is so so, not bad not great, I ordered the fried rice my server completely forgot to get it so I sat there for like 10 minutes and finally she asked if I would like my check having forgot that I had ordered the fried rice. I was full at that point and told her not to worry about it but she did anyways and afterwards it was terrible so I didn't really eat it. I sat at the sushi bar, and the fish looked fresh, the octopus iffy. DECOR: It is brand new and having been to the Chinese place before they have done a great job with the space so it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. AUTHENTICITY: It is ran by Chinese people, not Japanese and not the same family who owned the Chinese restaurant before. But it's not bad, it is missing a lot of things you would get at places like Sonobana and Ken's so if you are in to the more obscure Japanese sushi delicacies, appetizers, and entrees it is not the place for you. OVERALL: Great place for Fairview but is not even competition for places in the Nashville area. Will do in a sushi craving pinch. 4.5 stars for Fairview, 2 for the surrounding area. read more
