STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLINIC AND Dr. Portman. I'm not sure how they have so many 5 star reviews (maybe bots?) But if you are doing dental work through insurance, stay far away. I came into the office having seen their great reviews and that they are "in-network" for my insurance, and everything was fine up until the end of the visit. I booked again and did more dental work the next week. A couple weeks later, I see an out of network charge on my insurance for 880$ for JUST the cleaning, driving my dental insurance costs to almost hit the yearly limit. And I received a bill north of 500$ for the rest of my dental work despite already paying a 300$ deductible. Not once were they transparent about their costs, and I have never felt so scammed in the medicine industry. Apparently, they have multiple offices that take different insurances at different locations, and based on your insurance, they will guarantee to bill you out of network - despite them telling you that you are "in-network" and your insurance is "accepted". Listen to the other one-star reviews if you have insurance, and be wary of situations like this. Always ensure costs before they do ANY kind of procedure on you. read more

Pretty solid experience during my first visit at iSmile Dental for a routine cleaning. The dental hygienist Crystal provided exceptional care and did a thorough cleaning. The dentist was great as well. Overall there was a high level of customer service with a friendly, welcoming attitude. The offices are modern, clean and conveniently located near the 7th Avenue station on the (Q) / (B) line in Park Slope. Reading some of the previous reviews, I hoping there's no issues with out-of-network billing. If it stays that way, I'd highly recommend iSmile Dental to anyone looking to have a dental experience that sucks significantly less. read more

OK, the treatments I had here were fine, as far as I can tell. But holy cow is this place expensive. For a regular cleaning visit (the kind you're supposed to get every six months), they charged my insurance $1200. I've been to 2 other dental clinics in similarly expensive neighborhoods - one of them charged my insurance $188 for a regular cleaning (with x-rays). Another place charged my insurance $450 to replace a filling. When I look at the individual line items for the $1200 bill from this place, I see that they're pricing things at least twice as much as anywhere else, and they also shove in a lot of extra procedures (like 3 sets of x-rays... a panorama, plus bitewings, plus another complete set of x-rays... all in the same visit). Even if I do a line by line comparison with my other dentist, the price different is still huge because their prices are more than double. I don't understand how this isn't simply fraudulent. The same type of visit should not be costing $188 somewhere and $1200 somewhere else. I was already disturbed by their cancellation charges (which, despite what they are saying on this page, they did NOT offer to waive when something came up and I needed to cancel for the first time). Even though I have insurance, they made me pay up front for everything that wasn't a dental cleaning. Probably won't come back - really put off by the price gouging and the feeling that I'm interacting with sharks when I go here. A real bummer to update this place with a negative review, but I just had an unfortunate experience where the office neglected to tell me they were no longer in-network on my insurance, and my most recent routine cleaning ended up as a nearly $500 bill, when it used to be completely covered. I don't think it's out of the question for any dental practice to notify patients when insurance coverage changes, and I'm disappointed that a normally great experience has ended up with a surprise charge of this magnitude. Like all other reviews mentioned, this place is a nightmare to schedule. Made an appointment for myself the first time - it was cancelled. Made a second appointment for myself and my husband - they had to reschedule my husband's appointment. I asked for both of our appointments to be together so we don't have to go in separately - they were able to accommodate that. The next day, they called and said they had to cancel both of our appointments. The explanation they provided was that due to COVID, they don't have as many appointments and doctors/hygienists call out, and that they "cannot predict the future" and hence all the rescheduling/cancelled appointments. Good to know that they're so accommodating of the doctors' and hygienists' scheduling, but I guess the rest of us are just waiting around at home to go to the dentist? I'm sure they don't care but I let them know that we'll just be going somewhere else for our dental needs. read more

I have never felt so scammed by a medical office in my life. Came here because I saw they take my insurance on zocdoc. When I got to the office, they took my insurance card and never once told me that I was ou-of-network. I went for a regular cleaning and xrays. Three weeks later, got mailed a $300 bill by my insurance. I called the office, they told me don't worry about the bill, they would just take as much as my insurance would pay them for out-of-network costs. Very suspicious. This cleaning cost me $950 of my annual maximum of $1,000. I went to another dentist after this and they were shocked and confused as to how I was charged this much money for cleaning visit. I would not be able to remove my wisdom teeth this year anymore because of this insane charge FOR JUST A CLEANING. I've seen many other reviews similar to mine, BEWARE!!!! read more

I'm giving them 3 starts because the hygienists and doctor are very friendly and kind. Unfortunately, when I arrived (late, that's my fault) for the appointment to have a cleaning and a cavity filled, it was explained that I would pay $50 and the receptionist showed me another line on the invoice, indicating the amounts they bill insurance for each procedure. This column indicated the total cost was $700+. I was confused, until I flat out asked whether they were no longer accepting our insurance as an in-network provider. Apparently, they left our network during the pandemic. I never received anything indicating this by mail ot phone call, and they never explained this to me when I was last there for my annual cleaning (which was fully covered). Please make sure you understand how this works: if a provider is not in network, you may be responsible for a 20% or higher co- insurance. They also explained that the rightmost column of the invoice showed how much they bill insurance. These numbers looked relatively very high to me. They said that if insurance didn't pay the full amount, "and they very well may not," I would be responsible for the remainder. I could receive another bill for hundreds of dollars, depending on what my insurance considers to be THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLR AMOUNT for any procedure. They should have some idea of what this might look like since they have other patients with the same or similar dental plans - it's not that great of a mystery. I am a provider who works with insurance all the time. What they're doing is called BALANCE BILLING, meaning the patient is responsible for the difference between the full fee and what insurance will pay. Most providers (myself included) will explain their DEDUCTIBLE AMOUNT and how this works, and estimate the likely cost for patients and even offer them a professional discount on those services to reduce their out of pocket cost once insurance has paid the claim. They never used the worlds DEDUCTIBLE, OUT OF NETWORK, BALANCE BILLING, CO-INSURANCE, or MAX ALLOWABLE, and so I believed they were still in-network. I'm very displeased with the lack of transparency here and their inflexibility with existing, loyal clients. I wouldn't approach this the same way with my clients because we have a relationship I'm interested in maintaining, and out of fairness; I also explain these fine details to every client with out of network insurance. Make sure to ask "are you still in network with my plan? What is my responsibility- do I have a deductible? Do you submit your full fee to insurance? Based on your experience with my plan, approximately what can I expect my insurance to pay? Do you do balance billing? Do you offer any professional discount to existing patients from the time when you were an in network provider? I hate it when health providers are not transparent with their billing practices because it leads to more confusion about how insurance works. This is one reason people don't go to doctors and dentists. Insurance is intentionally obtuse for providers and patients, no need to obfuscate things any further! read more

This dentist office is clean and the dentists and assistants are fine. My issue regards extremely misleading billing practices that are a borderline scam. I first found this dentist via Zocdoc where I filtered for dentists offices in-network for my insurance (delta dental ppo). I was assured by the dentist office that they accept my insurance. I was not aware that while the dentist office accepts my insurance, they are not in fact in-network. This is extremely misleading as they list my insurance provider in their website. I recently had to get a root canal procedure done. The lady at front desk provided me a quote and explained that my insurance would cover the procedure at 80% despite being out of network. I was asked to pay for my entire procedure upfront and that the dentist office would submit my claim to insurance who would pay me back the difference. I asked the office to confirm how much I would need to pay out of pocket multiple times. When I got the claim back from my insurance they paid a significantly lower proportion of the total cost citing that they only pay 80% of a set rate. My insurance company explained that had the dentist office done a predetermination, they could have informed me of my true out of pocket cost. The procedure ended up costing me almost triple what the dentist office quoted me. This feels like a complete scam to me, and I definitely won't be back. read more

Updating my review because it is the right thing to do. After my review, I got a call the same day. Probably within two hours. I was surprised. I thought I would get the usual "we are sorry for the inconveniences caused" schlem. But to my pleasant surprise, I was heard patiently. First appointment offered to me didn't help much, but I took it because I wanted to get treated by Dr Portmann. Suddenly, work changed a few things and I could no longer go for the appointment. I called back and they gave me a better time for the following day. Amazing. I go in today for my appointment and know the reason why they are rated so highly. Super disappointed with iSmile. They cancelled an appointment I made 6 months ago in person with them. They sent me reminders ahead of time a week a head and 3 days ahead, but when I showed up at the scheduled time no one had any idea who I was. I booked my appointment and iSmile didn't honor it. Not having a way to fit me in is disrespectful and unfair. How can anyone trust you if you don't honor your appointments? It was a gross waste of time for your customers to make reservations, show up and not be able to be seen. You have a "cancellation fee of $75.00 ... for all missed or cancelled appointments with less than 48 hours notice." The actual visit went very well. The office is clean and my appointment was on time. The cleaning and exam were about as painless as can be, and the technicians and dentist were friendly and professional. However (of course there's a however), the billing and insurance leaves something to be desired. I asked multiple times if they took my dental insurance (Delta). I was assured they do. Now it turns out I have a $500 bill due to iSmile because they are only covered as an out-of-network provider and I have to make up the difference between what my insurance pays for out-of-network and what iSmile charges. Being covered by Delta as an out-of-network provider is not the same as accepting my insurance if it's going to result in a huge bill! I really wish the office had been more forthcoming about this when I asked if I would be covered. Unless I win the powerball, I won't be back. read more

UPDATE: After posting this review and asking front desk for mgmt to call, I received a prompt call back to discuss the various issues I've experienced. That is good service and deserves to be reflected here. And to be fair, I will also remark that the dentists here have been excellent in the past. But my comments below on the admin issues are also accurate and remain out of fairness for a balanced review. In short, great dentists, but admin operations needs work. ORIGINAL REVIEW My experience with iSmile Union Street has been horrendous from an admin standpoint. Awful customer service and professionalism that is unacceptable. Some of what's happened below over multiple experiences... 1. Staff scheduled me for an appointment when the office is closed 2. Staff confirmed me for a 2:15PM appointment on a Friday. Then I got two completely separate text notifications asking me to confirm one appointment for 12PM and another for 2:15PM. I confirmed the 2:15 by text, and called iSmile to say the 12PM is not me. iSmile staff then told me that I don't have the 2:15PM appointment (and they gave it to someone else without asking or notifying me) and need to take 12PM or reschedule. 3. Staff booked me twice for the same appointment with each appointment 1 week apart (makes zero sense). 4. Staff called me asking me for payments to a prior visit that I had already paid for months ago and said they would send to collections if I did not pay. It required speaking to a manager to sort out so that I did not double pay. 5. Staff booked me for the wrong location (Williamsburg vs Union St) There is clearly a problem with the administration of iSmile dental offices - this is a clear pattern of mistakes. There is also a customer service problem. Every time I talk to someone, they simply say "I didn't do it. I don't know what happened. It wasn't me." As a customer, I have no idea who's screwed up and I don't care. I want someone to apologize, take accountability, and fix it. Hearing everyone say that they are not responsible is frustrating and unhelpful. iSmile needs a lot of work on the admin side. Gone here for years with an empathetic posture and forgiveness (esp during COVID now), but questioning why I give them business when they are disorganized. read more

This great office is located in an even better neighborhood. Upon walking into this office, it is super clean. The temperature isn't too cold like most doctor's office which is a HUGE plus for me. There is a TV to take your mind off of waiting, but waiting really isn't an issue here. You are always seen on time and considered when openings are available. The doctors, techs and receptionists are all warm and welcoming and do a great job explaining everything from co-pays to how your dental x-rays are improving. I like to know what I'm getting out of my insurance and this location definitely gives you above and beyond. Past dentists I've been to just had their techs clean my teeth then they'd come in for about 5 minutes, check my teeth and say "okay you're good". Waste of insurance money in my opinion. The neighborhood around this place is very hipster and has a lot of great food places. PS - They give you goodie bags after every visit, yay! Because adults want goodie bags too :) read more

I had a cleaning here for the first time and it was a pleasant experience. The front desk staff was really pleasant and welcoming. The wait time was under 5 minutes and the waiting area is very neat and clean. They have a coat rack to hang your coat before you go in the exam area which is awesome. The location is very convenient as they are close to major public transportation so you don't have drive and worry about the hassle of finding a park. The dentist has great bedside manner,although we met briefly to do my exam but it was short and sweet.The hygienist was very thorough and patient and during the process she always ask if I'm ok. I could go into detail about my specific situation but in summary the front staff - first name: Saiyda - did not disclose information that was relevant to my insurance, never thought to apologize for it, and instead acted as if I was a bother for trying to better understand their reasoning. Anytime I had question I was met with an eye roll and sigh that you'd expect from a preteen. Odd how the dentist has more composure, kindness, and courtesy in comparison to someone who sits to answer phones and sign in patients all day. Critical feedback: 1. Spend some time on basic customer service training with front staff. I noticed this wasn't the first review that noted the rude and off putting behavior of the front staff. Although realistically they themselves are most likely in charge of responding to critical reviews so my feedback may fall on deaf and uncaring ears. 2. The prices are on the high end.... but for the kind of work you get done they all are in my experience. But they're more than willing to strategize with you about the work you need done and work with you around your budget. This is the unicorn of dentist offices. Clean and modern facilities, and every single person I interacted with is so kind, friendly and professional. I am a scaredy-cat adult when it comes to cavities and situations requiring a drill, and Dr Angel and his assistant Evelyn could not have been more patient, assuring and caring. Evelyn was basically holding my hand telling me it would be okay the entire time. I really like that it is a diverse staff of mostly women. I thought others should be aware before going that Dr. Daniel Royzman and other staff at iSmile Dental are not wearing masks when interacting within six feet of each other. They are spending extended periods of time, without masks sitting within six feet of one another in-between appointments, right in the reception area. If this is how this dentist protects himself at work, in front of patients he is about ready to do a dental procedure with, I would be very concerned about the safety of interacting with him for the extended time required without a mask. I recently visited iSmile dental for a cleaning. My overall experience was a great one, I was seen in a timely matter even a few minutes earlier than my appt time. The receptionist was very friendly and warm. The facility is super clean which to me is huge. I received a cleaning by one of the hygienists and then met with Dr. Portman for an exam. Well, I have spent about 1,5 years visiting this office and I don't want to give stars for location, place design and people. I want to give stars for my health after all these visits because you go to dentist office to improve your health not to watch tv or drink free water right ? I got invisilign about 1 year ago and In the middle of the treatment I was left without any proper advice what should I do with pain I started experience while wearing invisilign. I had to go to Moscow two times to get info from orthodontists about my bite and spent a lot of money. And my doctor in Moscow told me " you should have chosen md who not only care about proper bite but also about joint health overall, you can't move teeth without checking proper position of the jaw" It second time in Moscow and my md told that my teeth super misaligned, there is no middle line and my tmj in a bad condition because I had unprofessional work and poor bite for about 4 months ( I stopped wear Invisalign due to pain) In my opinion, if I get problems while I was treated by md, it should be resolved by that md. Instead I was told to see many tmj specialists( which I did many times). Right now I have not finished my invisilign treatment because it gives me pain only and doctor doesn't know how to fix it. I mean, the dentist was super nice. Dr Angel and the staff too, but my 2 stars go to lack of information and misleading. I called because I was in pain and needed to see a dentist. They get me in that same afternoon! Great. I asked twice about copay and visit cost, they took my insurance and told me they will call me back. I called to check and the lady literally said "I checked your insurance, you don't need to pay anything for consultation, you are covered" . Went there that afternoon, he saw me for about 10min, did ONE X-ray and referred me to an oral surgeon because my tooth needs to be removed and he cannot do it. That was it, look at that specific tooth and bye... Which is ok., that's why I was there for. I went to ask the front desk lady again about payment, she said I was good to go. No payment needed , my insurance covers the visit. 2 weeks later... I have a bill for $125 from my iSmile, I cannot even see what "portion" the insurance paid... I asked 3 times about payment and 3 times they told me I didn't have to pay anything, just to get me there for a 7min consultation and charged $125 afterwards... not coming back. My insurance is pretty good and has covered a lot before so they obviously didn't do it right. read more
