I like the idea of it being made daily and organic. I am all for that. But unfortunately I really didn't like many of the flavors. It was either wayyyy too sweet, or just too strong. I tried the burnt carmel, tasted kinda burnt.. So I gave salted caramel a try, but that was just way too sweet, along with the toffee. The mexican chocolate had a few bitter notes in it, which I am completely fine with, but would not have been able to eat a whole scoop of that. So in the end, I went with a basic flavor, Vanilla. The boyfriend also chose a basic flavor, coffee. The coffee was really good, had bits of ground coffee swirled within the ice cream. Pricing wise, it's a great deal! $3 for two scoops of icecream???! yum! and the waffle bit was delicious. read more

I've pretty much tried most of the top spots in the Bay Area, and I can say, unequivocally, that iScream is on top of the list (sharing the top spot with the original Swensen's of Russian Hill in SF. iScream produces its ice cream in small batches so it's always incredibly fresh. The ingredients are top notch, resulting in flavors that are both simple and complex at the same time. FUN Fact: the same flavor will have different notes, depending on the batch, meaning you will always experience something new, even if addicted to the same flavor! Most of the workers are young ladies from the local high school who couldn't be more delightful! These gals are very well versed on the different flavors, ingredients, and ice cream production process. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner recruits directly from the Home Economics department, requesting the stars of that major. I love matcha green tea ice cream and their version, made with Strauss Family cream has a great bite and is one of my all-time favorites. Kudos also for having really unique flavors without getting weird in a not-good way (ahem, Humphrey Slocum). The Thai Iced Tea flavor is as delicious as it is unboring. Meh. I came on the Sunday night of Labor day weekend, which is a night they are open till 9 pm. Since everyone seemed to be out of town we didn't wait for too long. I wouldn't make a big effort to come back here. Ever. At my age, meaning my metabolism has slowed down and dessert is a big treat, I want dessert outings to be special, rewarding, nostalgic, and basically *ucking orgasmic even. This narrow, blah, horribly painted interior was noooooo fun. What color is the paint on these walls!? Why are they trying to make us like like blue/green Dairy Eating Monsters!? It's super ugly and stuffy!! Besides the blah decor, the ice cream wasn't really cutting it. My double scoop was Caramel something and Chocolate. $4.50 for 2 small scoops. Shoulda just gone with one flavor I knew I loved, but I felt pressure from the line behind me and didn't ask for samples. Wrong Move. I waited, so can they! The chocolate was good in flavor, because they do use high quality ingredients, but texturally not creamy at all, it was sorta grainy and unsatisfying. The Caramel-something wasn't super great, but better than the choco. and I wish there had been equal proportions of both. Or more of the caramel! I suppose if I had kids or people begging to go get ice cream I would come here, and I do appreciate what but I prefer a smoother, more melty ice cream and I don't know that the lines would compel me to come back. Please help keep me from going here too often - it is a bit too close for comfort, as in the waist of my jeans comfort. Last time I was here my sweetie ordered 4 kinds of chocolate - a mexican chocolate, a mocha, a malt and regular chocolate with hot fudge. After I saw that, I didn't even bother to order my own dish and was glad he was willing to share. I know it sounds like too much chocolate but it wasn't and he claimed curative powers after eating it. The time before that it was the toffee - with bits of toffee that were perfectly,softly crunchy and crumbly at the same time. It's a little store out in Solano that really hits the spot on a hot day out. I like that they give out samples using real spoons, so it doesn't feel so wasteful asking for multiple samples when needed. I snuck a peek as we walked by and the same lady that served us in the morning was still there so we couldn't come in... THE SHAME. It was a sad day. I love strawberries soooo much but I'm allergic to them raw. For some reason cooking/freezing/whatever denatures the enzymes I'm allergic to or some mumbo jumbo like that, I don't know, Wiki it, so I eat strawberry ice cream every chance I get and theirs is AWESOME. SWEET! I went on opening day (3/9) and had the vegan lemon coconut ice cream. It was lemony and sunny, with enough zest to give it a slight bitter edge, and the coconut base pulled it together nicely. It was so yummy I licked the inside of my cup when I was done! Today, via the facebook fan page, I was informed they have vegan rocky road!!!! I'm taking a trip across town for this! iScream is a Solano Avenue secret: this is possibly the best ice cream on the planet! Better than the famously long-lined (but short-lived) Ici on College Avenue was; better than Humphrey Slocum is now. Super-creamy (it must be the high-end ingredients), with fabulous flavors. I consider Creme Brulee their flagship, but all are good. I wait every year for St. Patrick's Day Irish Coffee, and wish they'd make Chocolate Sorbet again. Well worth the price. read more

Unlike the many exotic and fancy ice cream shops that dole out small scoops, IScream gives out bigger, or rather normal sized scoops for an old-fashioned parlor shop. You can choose two flavors for a small. The ice cream itself is creamy and rich. Each cup comes with a slice of waffle cone too, which was thin yet crunchy just the way it should be. The storefront is pretty tiny but there are several tables to eat at so you don't have to eat it on-the-go. I was there a few hours ago and already want to go back. I may just end up living there. To be more specific, the texture of the ice cream itself is amazing... super silky and creamy like a fluffy buttercream. It was hard to choose a flavor because they were all so yummy (yes, I abused my tester-tasting privileges). The salted caramel, however, (a personal favorite flavor of mine generally speaking) was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Not too salty, salty enough, just fantastic. Still, if you have this around and it's nearby, why not? Oh and the waffle cone... damn it. I was licking it on the bus and the cone decided to split in half, so I had to catch it with one hand, and my friend took over the rest of the waffle cone. Anytime I have a meal in the Solano/Hopkins area, I am compelled to enjoy a scoop of IScream. While it doesn't have the crazy flavors of Ici, the traditional flavors are pretty good. I've had the most luck with cookie & cream/salted caramel, and each scoop comes with a bit of waffle cone. Also, they let you split the smaller sizes, unlike some other places in Berkeley. I love this place so much. So So So much, you have no idea. The cookies and cream is great due to the sheer amount of cookies in it, I swear there's an entire package of oreos in every scoop. The chocolate sorbet is amazing, pure chocolate uncut by any dairy, not overly sweet, and completely decadent. The strawberry tastes like actual strawberries, not like some simulacrum of a strawberry a scientist came up with in a lab. Oh, and get the chocolate cone. I especially love the chunks of broken cone they include when you buy a cup. Yeah, it might be a smidge more expensive than that gallon of Dreyer's ice milk product gathering a layer of frost in in your freezer, but the lack of polysorbate 80 and high fructose corn syrup makes up for it.
