I moved to Alameda a year ago from the east coast & was desperate to find someone to cut my hair. I am very picky about this, so it wasn't easy.
First, I did exactly what is always recommended: I saw a woman on the ferry whose hairstyle I liked. She gave me the name of her stylist. Normally, I would avoid someone who rents a chair & only charges $35 (you get what you pay for), but Ferry Woman had a great cut & had been going to this woman for years.
Let's just say that, despite my very fine hair, I would have bet a month's pay that a professional could not blow dry it any flatter than it naturally was. This woman did things with a round brush that I never thought were possible & I don't mean it as a compliment.
Then, I went to a place in Union Square. Very chi-chi; separate stylists & colorist & each stylist has two assistants. One to bring water the other to tell you the the stylist will be right there. A $300 cut & color later, it was - OK. Nothing more, nothing less. I figured that I would give it a chance. It was only our first hair date. Two more dates and I knew that he was not the one for me.
After reading the Yelp reviews about iSalon, I wandered into the place. It was two weeks after my last date with the Uber-stylist. I poured out my saga to the women at the desk, pointed at my hair & said, "THIS is the $300 hair." As they stared back at me, I said, "it's OK. I'm the idiot who paid for this. I know it sucks or I wouldn't be here."
I made an appointment for Brenda to fix it & was able to get in a couple weeks later. I was so happy - she listened to me! I am very bad at explaining what I want and have a laundry list of requirements: long-ish, even tho it is so fine that any weight makes it flat. Not too much work, because I get bored doing my hair after about 4 minutes. No product (or not too much) because I hate the way it smells & feels. Etc. Brenda was patient, gave me a pretty decent cut and was even polite about my DIY Garnier dye-job (I'd been desparate - 4 inch roots)!
I got a new client discount and the cut & partials with tip were around $150. Not too shabby.
When it was time for another cut (past time, actually), I tried to book another appointment online. Brenda had nothing for several weeks, so I booked with Linda. LOVE her! I originally made time for cut and partials, but had to cut back to only cut.
Linda not only stayed late to do my partials (she took mercy on my roots), but managed to make my hair do what I wanted but couldn't explain. She also showed me how to blow-dry my hair so that my long, side-swept bangs wouldn't get all stringy & defeated by my cowlick (who has a cowlick on their forehead?).
That was two weeks ago - my hair looked good when I left (Linda didn't do that "froofy-attack-you-with-product thing) and looks good now. I can even blow it myself and it looks good!
I hope to hair-date Linda for a very long time. read more
