I chose Dr. Niu despite reading some negative reviews, believing that those issues would not happen to me. Unfortunately, this treatment turned out to be the most painful experience of my life. As a senior, I chose to have a gold onlay crown placed on my lower right molar, hoping to preserve more of my tooth structure and avoid the fragility of porcelain crowns. However, during the procedure, I felt that more tooth structure was removed than I had anticipated, and work was also done on a tooth I did not expect to be included in the treatment. The procedure lasted three hours, during which there was repeated bleeding that had to be stopped multiple times. For me, this was overwhelming and difficult to endure, and at times, I felt faint. Part of the time was also spent filling another tooth. The temporary crown fell off the same day it was placed. Although it was reinstalled the next day, I continued to experience pain while waiting two weeks for the permanent crown to arrive. During the installation of the permanent crown, significant pressure was applied, seemingly to ensure the crown would stay in place. This caused me extreme discomfort, as though my jaw might give out. The process lasted about two hours. In the months that followed, I found it difficult to chew properly, and any contact with the tooth would trigger pain. Later, I consulted other dentists who noted that the amount of tooth structure removed and the pressure applied during the procedure might have contributed to my ongoing issues and could potentially lead to future problems. After the treatment, I tried to contact Dr. Niu but did not receive a response. His receptionist told me to schedule a follow-up appointment, but due to the physical and emotional trauma I had experienced, I could not bring myself to return. I chose Dr. Niu because of his 50 years of experience and because I trusted him as a professional from my cultural background. I truly hoped my dental issues would improve, but after a year, I still cannot chew food properly and sometimes experience severe pain. This is my personal experience, and I am sharing it in the hope that it helps others make a more informed decision. read more

Staff is great, the fron desk girl was very welcoming and friendly and so were the assistants, they deserve the stars. I waited over 45 minutes after my xray and when the doctor still didn't show up I had to go look for help and then back to my chair again. I was already leaving when the doctor arrived and when I explained that unfortunately I couldn't stay longer he said that it would take just 5 minutes. So I basically spent over an hour there waiting for him to show up and say that my consultation would be less than 5 minutes. So, nope. read more

May 23, 2021 - I had a regular dental cleaning done here a few days ago. There wasn't a big expectation for a routine procedure of this kind. But interestingly to my surprise it made a significant difference. It cleared up a problem that had bothered me for a long time. It was a weird uncomfortable feeling constantly felt on my left cheek. It had been like that for a few years. I had dental cleaning done a few times over the years before starting here, but they didn't help for the weird feeling problem. I'm so happy that it's cleared up now. Since I started coming here last year Dr. Niu's team did a lot for me, including fillings, extractions, a surgery and the recent cleaning. I also got quite a few helpful consultations. The team did a great job each time and I am expecting a lot more in the future. read more

Irvine dental group used to be my favorite place because of how well they clean my teeth and the service that was provided . My insurance covered teeth cleaning here, so there was no out of my pocket cost for me, and I liked them so much I recommended my parents go there for teeth cleaning. They do not have insurance and wanted to pay out of pocket to get their teeth cleaned and examined. When my father went in for his examination and cleaning the doctor informed him that he would have to redo his root canal that would cost $1,300 and they would require a specialist to cost an additional $1,200 for that person to come for a total of $2,500. They didn't provide my dad cheaper options and made him feel that his teeth was in dire conditions if he didn't get it corrected quickly. Before my dad would go ahead and proceed with such an expensive procedure he wanted to get a second opinion on the matter and he was told it was unnecessary. I'm extremely disappointed and disheartened that there would be so much up selling at a location I had trusted over the years for people without dental insurance. read more

So it took me just about a year to begin to be able to talk about my experience in this office. I went in to get some simple cavities filled, and left with an entire mouthful of pain. When the dentist came into the room, he did not say hello, or tell me what he was about to do. I felt scared. For some reason, the drilling hurt much more than usual, and I asked for more anesthesia. After giving me some attitude, and looking exasperated, telling me that I have extraordinarily sensitive teeth, the dentist injected it, and did not give it enough time to take effect. He began the drilling almost immediately, and I felt the pain just as badly as the first time. I jerked from the pain, and he scolded me for doing so, saying that he almost drilled the wrong part of my tooth due to my movement. By this time, my buttcheeks were clenched from the pain, and I was gripping the sides of my seat as hard as I could. Then, Dr. Niu decided to say "OH! I see you have a chipped tooth back here, let me fix that." I thought to myself, how come you didn't see the chipped tooth from all the digital photos and x-rays you took during the consultation??" Anyway, with all this equipment in my mouth, I could not say anything, so I just nodded, and was later gifted with an additional $200 on my bill for fixing a chipped tooth. When the drilling was done, and I breathed a sigh of relief, they began to fill the cavities. The dentist put the *stuff* into my tooth, and had his assistant shine a light onto it to harden. Apparently, his assistant took off the light too early, and he proceeded to yell at her for it right in front of me. Great. Now, when everything was done, I tried to close my mouth, and was surprised to find that none of my back teeth would fit together when my mouth was closed! He tried to use paper to have me grind on, which would show him which tooth was too high. After drilling down some of the higher teeth, Dr. Niu sent me on my way, saying that since my mouth was numb, I probably wasn't feeling all the teeth correctly. Two weeks later, I was still having issues with closing my mouth all the way. I found that I began grinding my teeth terribly, due to the uneven fillings. I went back to Dr. Niu, and after examining the fillings, he told me that he could not see why my bite felt off, since everything appeared okay. He then told me to "point to which tooth it is." I tried to point to the area in my mouth which was having the worst bite, and he filed down some more teeth. I told him that my bite was still completely off, and he told me that there was nothing else he could do, since he couldn't file down my teeth any more. Long story short, went in for simple cavity fillings, came out with messed up bite and now have to wear a mouth guard when I sleep to prevent grinding my teeth. The worst part was that I felt that my concerns and my pain were just brushed off. Now, MONTHS later. I continue to have pain on and off (sharp nerve-like pain) in the areas of my teeth where the fillings were placed. I am so traumatized to see dentists because of this last experience that I have to take beta-blockers before any sort of visits from then on in order to calm my heartbeat. Secretary called me 4 months ago for a semi-annual check up and cleaning. I told her to take me off their list because I am NEVER going back to this office. read more

I am a grad student at UCI, and I go to Irvine Dental Group because it is 5 minutes away from my home and they accept my insurance. There are a lot of fake reviews of dentists here on Yelp, but this is an actual review. Look at my other reviews. I have been here several times for cleanings, fillings, deep cleanings, root canal, and most recently a dental implant. One of my molars was cracked down to the root and my options were to have a bridge or get an implant. I decided to go for the most expensive option because I wanted something more permanent and low maintenance. It was expensive. For the extraction, titanium implant, and bone graft, I paid a bit over $2000. The actual tooth part will cost another $1000. You might see ads in the paper for implants that cost $1000. That is the cost for just the implant, not the extraction, graft, and tooth. Also, Dr. Niu is an implant specialist. I could tell he is very skilled at what he does. It is an uncomfortable procedure, but Dr. Niu was very aware of my pain level and used more licocaine when I needed it. They have a mini-surgery suite with modern equipment, so I felt safe getting major work done here. read more

Do not go there! I just finished my teeth deep clean there. I will tell your guys how terrible the service is. I made an appointment at 9am on Friday. When I make this appointment I asked the receptionist could it be later in the morning like 9:30 am or 10 am. They told me 9:00am is the only available time that day. So I took the time and arrived on time. But I was notified that the doctor would be late for 20 minutes. It was not a big deal for me, so I sat there until Dr. Niu came in. The process was good until Dr. Niu suddenly leave during cleaning my teeth without any explanation. I took anesthesia since the operation would cause some pain. The thing is Dr. Niu left for 30 minutes and kept me waiting there with my half cleaned teeth and numb face. Just because a new patient came in and he probably was a frequent visitor. The new patient got treatment first while I waiting alone there. When Dr. Niu came back, I already felt the effectiveness of my anesthesia decreased. So I can felt a little pain when he finished the left of my teeth. It totally took my 3 hours to finish an one and a half treatment. The doctor (they have only one) was not able to diagnose crack in the tooth (I had a lot of pus in gum and pain) and extracted nerve from a nearby healthy tooth, leaving it finally with a very thin wall. After that he was very persisting trying to schedule my next appointment with him, which I rejected. It was more than a year ago. Quality was bad, but the price was also low. read more

Irvine Dental Group's doctor Niu did an implant for me this summer, ever since, my gum was constant inflated. Even though he makes me believe everything he did is right, the fact is I can't use the implant tooth to eat. After the cruciating painful implant process with expensive treatment cost what I get is a mal-functional tooth that causes infection all the time. I am very disappointed by his treatment. read more

I have been in twice for cleanings and Dr Niu and the hygienists Lauren and Jeri have been excellent. The previous Irvine dental practice I went to was horrible, painful and made me scared of dentists. My friend recommended Dr Niu because she has been going to him for 20 years and he's gentle despite the major tooth issues she's had. The two cleanings I had in the past year were the most comfortable and pain-free cleanings ever. All three of the staff members had excellent bedside manner, so to speak. They were very friendly and sensitive to if I ever felt uncomfortable. They repeatedly checked in to make sure I was comfortable and not feeling any pain. I will definitely stick with this practice. The Dr will do unnecessary drilling. The details of my case are long and it was two years ago. I wanted to let it go because the damage is done but I feel the need to not let other people go through what I have been through. Anyway they might argue that you need the drilling but no matter whether he is right or wrong, just be careful when he advised that you need to do drilling and filling on your 6 or 8 teeth for the first visit. read more

I used to come here as a kid as well and had Dr. Niu and utilized the other former dentists (Dr. Chen) and orthodontists (Dr. Sy) BTW neither are there anymore. Apparently he was well known with all the families at the local Mandarin school. Had an overall good experience there, staff was professional and I didn't have cavities for the longest time. But then moved away and went to college and completely forgot about my tooth care. And then moved back after I got a job with great benefits and got insurance but sadly Irvine Dental wasn't covered by my HMO and let me tell you finding a good dentist is HARD. Luckily my work recently changed to Pacificare (read my review shudder) and as I was looking for a new dentist since my other HMO dentist sucked and was always trying to sell me things not on my HMO plan, I decided to go back to Irvine Dental. Dr. Niu wasn't available to HMO clients so I got Dr. Guang and he does a great job and their staff is great too. The rooms are clean and you don't feel so claustrophobic as I did with the other dentist's office I used to go to. Only bummer for you fellow HMO folks, he comes in only once a week so booking an appointment may take a month. read more

This is a horrible dental office..they tried to rid their patients by LYING to the patients...we came in with dental insurance, but they lied to us that if we paid cash price, it will be CHEAPER than If were used the insurance..THAT was TOTALLY BS!!..we found out that THEY LIED TO US. after we talked to the insurance company...so we end up paying 200 bucks/cavity...WHICH we were supposed ONLY paid 50bucks if we were used our insurance!!..PLUS..they told us how much would the total price would be BEFORE starting the filling procedure..but at the end..they INCREASE TWO HUNDRED BUCKS...I totally have the urge to report THEM!!...DON"T GO THERE!! read more
