We have been coming up this way for lots of years with our kids. The place is a very busy truck stop- so we figure the food has to be good and o my it was! My husband and son opted for the full buffet. They also have a soup and salad only buffet. The fried chicken and gravy delivers full southern comfort along with the soups and desserts. I had the corned beef hash and eggs. The hash was dreamy - not salty not too many potatoes. Priced right this is a great family stop. The front store had a tee shirt for my older son to change into after the rain shower he got caught in and the front counter had good fudge that managed to sneak home with us. Clean restrooms. This place needs to be given an award for how good it is! I have to say I was a little skeptical when a friend said that she wanted to meet here, but after eating the food and trying it out I am 100% sold!!! This place is amazing from the decor to the amazing staff who walks around and introduces themselves and meets their guests! I was blown away by the hospitality that was given and it was simple things that have me raving to all my friends about this place! On Monday I had dinner with a friend around 5:30 p.m. I was kinda shocked that this place was pretty busy, but now I for sure know why. This place is located off of 75 in Reddick and is attached to the Petro Gas Station. Do not let the fact that it is attached to a gas station defer you in anyway from going and trying this place out. You walk in and they have American Flags everywhere, American Signs and it was truly a patriotic place to eat. You walk through and they have a huge dining room! They have both booths and tables to choose from. When you walk in you go past the hot buffet, salad bar, and the desserts. The hot buffet when I visited was traditional southern foods, with all the sides and dressings. I was told by my friend that the buffet changes daily and features certain foods. Sometimes it is Sole Food, other times its fried fish, even sometimes they do all you can eat prime rib! You next walk past the salad bar and they have tons and tons of salads and fresh toppings to choose from! The salad bar was something I personally tried and it was great with all the fresh options. They have soups as well. This visit I ordered off the menu and got a steak! It was a great tasting steak and had a ton of flavor. It was also really big and I had some to take home as well. My friend had an omelette and it looked really good. She also had a biscuit that looked amazing! One thing that I found super awesome is that all their food is served in a Iron Skillet (hence the name) which was awesome that they do that. I would definitely recommend this place for weary travelers. The GM, Scott Goldstein, was very kind to my children. He not only gave them balloons but also origami frogs that jump! The customer service and guest experience here goes way above the normal food and service that you come to expect at any other restaurant. Great little place tucked right off I75 situated next to a gas station. Good old fashioned food, and they have a nightly seafood buffet. Lots of tasty sounding items on the menu and really reasonable prices - nothing over $17. Service was fast and really friendly. If the truckers eat here, you know it's good. read more

Petro Truck Stops have always been my first choice for travel stop when I was a driver. It was nice to drop in a get some grub and remanence about the old days. This location is just as any other across the US and that is nice. The food offerings include a trip to the soup and salad bar which rivals the ones in those fancy places. The Petro's have a buffet daily all day either for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I visited on Friday and they has a nice seafood buffet with fried fish and many others selections. I was there for dinner and I had the chicken fried steak with fries. To say the least I made a trip to the salad bar. I was not a fan of the soup offerings which was gumbo or (my choice) chicken noodle soup. The soup bland and made with egg noodles which were a little overpowering. The chicken fried steak was good and came with country gravy and toast. I have been craving this rib sticking food for awhile. So if your on the road or just traveling this is a great place to stop for dinner. read more

I'll be darned, the chicken fried steak was absolutely amazing. Very crispy (even more surprised because I bought it as take out and ate it at in the hotel). Grits were a perfect complement to the meal. Seriously, I've been having dreams about it. It's incredible. The only strange thing was when I walked in, no one greeted me, nor showed me to a table. The front was a trucker section, long lunch counter tables where you could be sitting next to anyone, the middle was the salad bar, and the back was a standard sit-down area. But I couldn't figure out how to get a table (front or back of restaurant). So I just got take out from the waitresses at the trucker area. Being very non-caucasian in a lily-white sea of diners and staff felt like it had something to do with it.... I even got a sermon on how Jesus was my savior from a diner paying his bill.... No one was overtly racist - and the waitresses (all super sweet....once they realized I spoke perfect english with no accent [of course, I was born and raised in the USA, I better not have an accent]) even gave me a glass of water even though I ordered take-out. But it was strangly uncomfortable to get to that point. read more

The only thing I like better than road trips with my wife and kids is road side restaurants. These establishments are usually the best place to get home cooking at a reasonable price. Hey, if its good enough for truckers its good enough for me. Iron Skillet is a nice restaurant usually found at Petro Truck Stops. Today I ordered the Southern Comfort platter which comes with toasted biscuites covered in sausage gravy and two eggs. SO TASTY! Niki got the NY strip with eggs also DELICIOUS! I needed food and a caffeinated beverage to keep me going on the highway....as it felt like I had 1000 lb. weights attached to my eyelids. First impression when I walked in was "this looks OK", so I took a look at the buffet, decided against it because it was a few dollars more than I wanted to spend, and it didn't have breakfast items on it at that time of the day. Ordered Chicken Fried Steak and eggs, with hash browns well done. What I got was a CFS that was well done, and hash browns that weren't brown at all. The server was polite and attentive, the food came out in an average amount of time.....just as the house flies (just a few) were annoying enough that I wanted to leave quickly. The service is terrible, I couldn't get any straws or silverware, I had to get up and get it myself. talk about southern hospitality, this place is the exact opposite of it. they told me they didn't have chicken tenders but the waitress ordered some for herself *thats pretty selfish*. the staff was arguing with each other while I was trying to eat. there was scrap food on the ground and I couldn't help but almost throw up my food. I would not recommend this to anyone with taste buds of any sort. ordered eggs and I could practically take this home and still raise it. if I could give this place less than 0 stars I would. the health department should be on top of this and this place should be condemned. Very close to my house. Food is decent and staff is wonderful. We meet friends there for breakfast every Saturday morning.

This restaurant reminds me very much of the classic Shoneys style buffets (of which there are none left in Gainesville). The fruit and salad bar was very fresh, and the selection quite good. The fried and baked chicken were both quite good. The desserts and soups were ok. Service was good. There's no hostess, you just sit anywhere and they come and greet you and take your drink orders. Selection was large enough to warrant a return, especially when your family of 4 can't agree on where to eat. Dinner was $12.50 for an adult, and probably worth it. read more

This is a good place to eat. I sometimes just get the salad bar buffet. The regular buffet is southern home cooking and very good but I have a tendency to eat too much. It is a place for truck drivers but is also usually full of local people that live nearby or come off I-75. If you try the Iron Skillet you will definitely come back. read more

I usually do not order the buffet. I , as a general rule, do not like them. I am so happy I did this buffet. The stuffed meatloaf was fantastic !! The soup was so good I am not sure I could do better in my own kitchen. The manager is very charasmatic and obviously likes his job. The waitstaff is very professional and friendly. I used to eat at The Iron Skillet Restaurants when I was younger and would be on the road with my Dad. He traveled seasonally from Michigan to Florida, or vise versa, and to Missouri occasionally, selling produce. It was one of his favorite places to stop. Not too long ago I was leaving the hospital late at night, after being there for days, and I was hungry for a real meal. Golden Corral, which would be my first choice was already closed, but coming up I-75 from Ocala to Gainesville I saw the sign for the Petro Truck Stop and Iron Skillet, memory clicked in. I stopped, and I was not disappointed. They have a great selection of menu items, and a wonderful little buffet, fresh food, prepared perfectly. I ordered breakfast that night, I don't know why, because when I came off the road I was thinking more of dinner, but I think fatigue started taking over. I've been back several times since, never disappointed. I'm headed there tonight, don't feel like I want to cook. Seafood on the buffet on Fridays, with another selection, usually fried chicken, if you're not a seafood fan. It's definitely a good value for your buck $$$. The place is clean and friendly, good waitresses, that keep your drink topped off, and even when you're having the buffet are very attentive. If you ask me my worst nightmare for a restaurant it would be "buffet" and "truck stop". However, I can not believe how good this restaurant was even though it was a combination of these two things. We stopped here to eat out of sheer exhaustion at hearing our kids yell that they were hungry. What a pleasant surprise!!! The restaurant was extremely clean. The salad bar was out of this world and had an employee attending to it full time so it stayed clean, fresh and well-stocked. The soup was unbelievably good. The hot buffet was also goo given that we were there at the non-peak hour of 3:00 pm. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because some of the food on the hot buffet had, obviously, been sitting awhile. The bread and deserts were a little dried out from sitting and some of the sides were a little old looking. But it still looked better then the majority of buffets that I have paid higher $$ for. The hot buffet was still very clean and the food I did try was very tasty. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. As a bonus, kids eat free so that was also a pleasant surprise.
