Great Ramen house near the Jersey shore. The atmosphere is relaxing and the decor is updated. The staff is super accommodating, even with small children. The ramen broth was the real selling point for me. Both Ramen dishes my wife and I had were exceptional and made me appreciate the cuisine. The pork belly is fantastic. Solid place for noodles and rice. Have tried a few different different (excluding soup) and have enjoyed everything. Like their tairo bubble tea (just make sure they have the actual bubble tapioca since last time the ran out and we're using some not so great replacement). The workers are nice and respectful. This is the best ramen outside of NYC. It's got a really rich broth, the egg has a little extra sweetness and the noodles taste fresh. Bonus, I don't have to go to NYC for ramen anymore! The prices were reasonable. The service was great. The chashu bun was yummy, even though the chashu pork was not quite authentic. The restaurant was intimate but upscale. I tried Ippen Ramen with high hopes. I love going to the fine Ramen restaurants in NYC and always hoped there would be one close to my home, so I really wanted this to work. I liked the décor and the window/water feature. It also looked very clean. Now I know Ippen is new, but there were several poor renditions here and some that were just OK. I was happy to see their menu as a few of the items you don't find commonly in the area. The pork buns had all the elements, but the pork was much too thin. The flavors were good, but the bun dominated the bite. Their version of Katsu Don was actually what most people would know as Tonkatsu - breaded and fried pork served over rice. The pork and rice were cooked perfectly, but the rice was plain. Katsu Don is traditionally served in a bowl of rice, with egg, vegetables and sushi rice flavored with murin. I was disappointed. The ramen was OK, and the noodles are not homemade (I know it's rare but I was hoping). The broth was not as rich as it should be. I was served a clear broth soup, mildly flavored with mushrooms, but it mostly tasted like mushroom flavored hot water with a few scallions. I am willing to try them again, and I really want them to succeed, I just hope they improve the technique on these dishes soon. I have went back to Ippen a few times and I'm happy to say everything has improved. The Katsu Don and Gyu Don are good, and the ramen broth has improved. The bun could still use a thicker slice of pork, but it is tasty. I'm happy they are open to suggestions. read more

My friends and I were very excited for this place, and so far we aren't disappointed! The portions and pricing are great, and the food is better than expected. The look of the restaurant is pretty nice, though they had a problem with the heat tonight- not their fault, but thank goodness we dressed warm! Our table ordered three appetizers: The veggie gyoza was good, and there's also a pork option which is nice. They are green which I haven't seen before. The takoyaki was AMAZING- a definite must have! It comes out piping hot but it's worth the wait for it to cool. It was probably my favorite dish we tried- I was worried it would be chewy because of the octopus but it was amazingly smooth and creamy. The chicken karaage was a little salty, but not bad otherwise. For main course, the majority of us ordered the miso ramen and it came out amazing! The broth had a great flavor, salty and savory. The chashu pork topping was also pretty good. The portion size is huge and extremely filling so if you're intent on finishing your bowl, maybe skip the appetizers. I ended up walking out the service and the people have terrible attitudes and clearly are not interested in making money. It was lunchtime there were two tables of people the restaurant was completely empty all I wanted was a bowl of soup and to do some work. I asked to sit by the window he told me to sit in the middle of the room at the smallest table in the restaurant. So I turned around and said never mind I'll go somewhere else. They agreed to let me sit by the window at a roundtable so I can have space to do some work. The server came over with an attitude and asked if I knew what I wanted. I asked for tea and a bowl of Ramen. She comes over with the tea and hand it to me instead of putting it on the table where there was a huge open space I gestured to have her place it on the table as it was piping hot. She did so followed by a huge sigh. I asked her to make my Ramen to go and then decided they will probably spit in my food lol so I think I'll just cancel the order packed my stuff and left. What a shame! I really was in the mood for some Ramen. If I could give this place less than one star I would give it -5 stars! read more

The Ramen was good but that's about it. The Japanese spring rolls were obviously previously frozen and deep fried, then cut on a bias to plate. Why? To check if they were cooked through! The filling was molten goop that cooled quickly once cut open. Also, their register is programmed to round up your check. So a meal for $14.99 costs you $15. I don't begrudge anyone a penny, but shouldn't a computerized register deal with real numbers? If one number isn't correct, what about the others? Another pet peeve is that the tip "guide" is based on the total WITH TAX. Never tip on tax. This is small consequence for a solo diner, but a group could find a greater impact. Then there's the little matter of a 'discount for cash' which changes all those numbers till you can't keep track of anything. Cash discount means credit surcharge. read more

I want to give this place 3 stars because the service was so cold and unfriendly, but the reason I bumped it up to 4 is because of the food. I had the pork bun and thought the flavor of it was delicious; a little spicy, crunchy from the cucumber, and tender pork. Then the ramen came and I was equally as impressed. Lovely broth, chewy but well cooked noodles and great overall flavor. I recommended asking for hot sauce for more of a flavor punch. As hyped as I was, this place was definitely worth the wait! The ramen broth is exceptional, I have tried both the pork and beef ramens and they are filled with content and flavor. Price is reasonable around 10-15 bucks depending on the type of ramen you get. Place is a tad bit small but very modern. Service is always great every time I come for lunch. Not bad for a ramen fix, but know that it's far from authentic. I'm not a fan of the thin white straight noodles, which is all they seem to offer to my surprise. I like the thicker yellow wavy variety which I usually associate with ramen. The pork was also a bit too fatty in my opinion. The tonkotsu broth was good though. 3/5 for the ramen. Would be 4/5 if they offered the yellow noodles. The ginger chicken wings taste like chicken wings from a Chinese take-out joint, served with sriracha. Not sure where the ginger was, but maybe the chicken had a slight dusting of ginger powder before frying? 2/5 stars. The squid balls tasted authentic. 4/5 stars. Overall, a decent average ramen joint that I may revisit only if I have a big craving for ramen and am in the area and am looking for some place close. read more

Just tried Ippin for the first time tonight. I will definitely be going back. I find some of these reviews to be a bit rude. If you have constructive criticism fine but there's no reason to be a jerk about a brand new business that will likely be tweaking things as they go in response to customers. My husband had the Ippin Ramen and I had the beef sukiyaki. Both were delicious and the broth was rich and flavorful. We've had ramen in several places across the east coast and would consider this on par. We also had the age tofu which I could have eaten for forever. Any smell I experienced was first of all, not like a barn, and is the bamboo shoot. It's not my favorite taste but I simply took it out and would you believe it? Everything was fine and the world did not stop turning. We got take out and the service was quick and very friendly. Prices are also extremely reasonable. My boyfriend and I were very excited for this place to open up and we finally went tonight. We could not have been more disappointed. We both had different ramen but both smelled (and tasted) like a zoo. We are both fans of Japanese food and have tried a lot of ramen, so this is very hard for me to leave such a low star review. Not sure if the smell is from the bamboo or just the pork used in the broth, but it was horrible enough that we both couldn't take another bite just out of politeness to the staff. So I ordered the shoyu ramen, my mom ordered the Ippin ramen, and my brother ordered the beef sukiyaki ramen. The shoyu ramen was delicious; nice, light flavorful broth. The chashu was more meaty than fatty, but it was still very tender. The Ippin and sukiyaki broths we're both pork bone, and had a deep, creamy taste. We also ordered takoyaki (deliciously crispy on the outside and tender on the inside) and the pork buns as our appetizers. I HIGHLY recommend the pork buns - they were so good that we ended up ordering another one to go. The pork cuts were nice and fatty; the aioli sauce blended well with the spring onion; and the cucumber was a surprisingly great complement to the tender bun. If you're a bit skeptical about ordering the bubble tea since this isn't specifically a bubble tea shop - well don't, because the tapioca balls are fresh and the milk teas (we had the taro & Thai) are delicious. If they were made from powder, I couldn't tell and I'd say they were on par with the countless number of bubbles tea shops I've been to in Boston, NYC, and Seoul.
