The famous Ipho truck from Drexel. The owner Son is one of the coolest people I've met. The food here is legit, they cut no corners. They recently moved to market street between 35th and 36th. For those who thought the truck closed down, please be relieved. Most of the items in the menu are exceptional and affordable. My favorite is their chicken rice plate. The chicken is marinated in lemon grass and curry and a ton more spices that makes it one of a kind and impossible to replicate at home. The plate comes with pickled salad that's sweet and tangy and crunchy. Their sweet sauce on rice is to die for. The sauce is salty and sweet, it is the perfect companion for the chicken. Speaking of chicken, it is huge! I mean, it takes up 3/4 of the whole box. I got mine with a side of egg for $1. You can also get an extra piece of chicken for $5. I'm a big guy and I could not finish it. Their drinks are also big. A lot of places give you medium to small cups but at Son's Ipho, they give you huge drinks. I do have to say though, the flavors of the drinks could be more pronounced. For the price though, you're definitely getting a bargain. DO NOT GET TAKEOUT FROM HERE!!! First, the prices on the website (which are a couple dollars more than pho at other places) are WRONG. I thought I was going to pay around $21 for two large phos to go. Instead, it was just under $30. When I asked, the older gentleman stated that the website was outdated and prices had gone up. Needless to say, he did not honor the prices online. Secondly, I was delivering one pho to my buddy and taking the other one home. Same gentleman told me which bag was which and labeled them. Unfortunately, after delivering the food and arriving home, I discovered he had switched them up. Do not patronize this place. Lastly, quality of pho was average at best. Bottom line: great place to grub if you're nearby and want convenient pho. I tried this place skeptically, wondering how good pho from a food truck could be. However, to my pleasant surprise, the pho wasn't bad at all. Ipho is far from the best pho restaurant - even for UC standards. The noodles are bit hard and the broth is mediocre. Yet it wouldn't be fair to compare iPho to actual Vietnamese pho restaurants. As only food truck that serves pho, it does it's job pretty well and earns borderline 4 stars. This is a great on the run lunch for Drexel students or people stopping by the area and aren't looking to eat anywhere serious. Tried: beef pho ($6) Pros: gives plenty of meat. good serving size, decent flavors Cons: noodles are a bit hard, broth is mediocre, broth is served lukewarm sometimes and rare meats end up raw or undercooked (which may actually be a great pro for those rare meat lovers out there). pro tip: don't eat the pho right away. 3.5 stars. I'll round up. I work at DU library, and saw this truck numerous times. Me and my coworker were debating when we should try it out. It was a late summer day we ended up going, there was only 1 guy working. We walked by other times and saw 2 people... so not sure what the normal number of workers are. There was one person ahead of us. We took the time to review the menu. Decided to go 2 beef pho, 1 chicken banh mi, 1 beef banh mi. The issue i found was that it took a really long time for our order to come up. We both were freaking out a bit because we only take 30 minute lunch breaks... and we already waited 15 minutes for food (most likely because only one worker). Pho broth should essentially be simmering non-stop during lunch hours, and boil water ready for pho noodles to be cooked. But that's just me...He did have to cook the meats for the banh mi which (chicken) takes longer since it is fresher and "to order". The prices were reasonable for what we got. The pho was surprisingly pretty good. The broth had some nice flavors and there was adequate amount of beef. I had more meat balls and brisket than raw beef (tai) shown in other people's picture. Perhaps they changed it up a bit? It came in a big gulp-esque styrofoam cup which made it easier to eat. The banh mi was a miss for me. It wasn't a true vietnamese hoagie. It was a fusion of korean bbq sauce marinated meat---which is a bit too sweet. The other parts of the banh mi were pretty good though. I'd suggest trying a lemon grass vietnamese inspired marinade. My friend also agreed that the banh mi meat were sweet. But she also agreed that the pho was pretty good. Flash forward another few weeks, my friend went again for the pho--and it seemed they switched the pho bowl to a smaller but wider styrofoam cup. Unfortunately, she said the quality went down a bit. This review is only about the pho. It is one of the worst pho I've had. First, the noodles were not pho noodles - they were wide rice noodles used for pad Thai. Second, the broth had no flavor. Seriously. None. It was basically hot water flavored only by the meat and the herbs that were in the soup. I had to mix in the sriracha and hoisin sauces just to get it to taste not so gross. I've eaten 3 different things at iPho: Pho (of course!), fried shrimps (forgot the actual name of the dish), an Pork Banh Mi, all of which were great! Coming from a food truck, I did not have high expectations for the Pho, but they pulled it off. The only thing is that some of the noodles were a bit clumped together. The fried shrimps were great for a snack or shared appetized between 2 people. And finally the banh mi. The flavor is totally there. It was reaaally spicy, which I liked, although they did not ask me if I wanted it spicy (I guess that makes it more authentic??). Since I graduated from Drexel in '14 and moved away, there have been a bunch of trucks that left campus, and even more that took their place. And there is no shortage of those Halal trucks. Dang, those things have taken over UCity. Not that I'm mad, they smell delicious and mouth-watering but that one across from the library will always be the classic.... Anyway, this review is about iPho. Now that I work at Drexel, why not regain my love for food trucks and with, all the weight ever. I love pho, and banh mis, so I was very eager to give this truck a chance. I've only gone twice but this will definitely be one of my "Treat Yo Self" haunts. Both times I've gotten the pork banh mi. At only $5, it'll fill you up and not dampen your already miniscule bank account. The roll was crunchy on the outside, but soft, and the meat was tender and perfectly seasoned. There's ample carrots and cilantro. Only a few jalapenos however and I was only a little disappointed to see regular half-moon cucumber slices rather than the long-cut Persian cucumber of a traditional banh mi. Whatever, I still jammed the entire thing in my mouth and enjoyed every bite. What I like best, personally, is there was no pate on the hoagie. I don't like pate, and was glad it wasn't there. The sauce they slather on the roll first is pretty sweet but good, just avoid taking a mouthful of only that. There's only two guys working and they seem pretty cool (the guy who takes orders was very patient when I tried to pay with my card, but I am an idiot and didn't realize I was $2 shy of $5 and had to step aside to put more cash on my card) and do their best to hustle out orders. It gets pretty crowded around lunch time, so be ready to dedicate at least 15-20 minutes to waiting for your food. But hey, that's good for you. Get out of the office for a bit. I really want to try that pho next visit, and maybe the lemongross chicken. You get a whole half bird and a side of rice and I think something else. Good deal!
