20. Pho Tai

Pho & Cafe Saigon is a solid option for Vietnamese food in UCity. I've been many times in the past few years, and I've always had a pretty consistent experience (minus the gradual increase in prices lol). While the Pho here is good and solid, I would hesitate to say it's the best. I also haven't ventured to try out their other food options, but I am impressed that they offer so much variety. Considering the price, I feel like the portion sizes aren't that big. When the weather is nice, the outside dining area has a great ambience. I've also always had quick service. Since Pho & Cafe Saigon has always ben so reliable, I happily come back here whenever I get the craving for Viet food but I don't wanna make the trip down to South Philly.

BBQ Pork summer rolls

A cute spot in UCity. Food: The wings are great - crispy and flavorful. The summer rolls are good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The pan fried noodles could have a better color for presentation and remove that tough behind steak. Add a bit more flavor wouln't hurt The beef cubed was just okay. Service: Kind servers but need to know their menu a bit more. We asked one of them a question abt one of the foods and he's confused himself. Maybe a new guy - so he'll get a pass for now. Price: Not too bad.

It's so been so many years since I've been here. YEARS. I remember having somewhat of a bad experience here and so I put it to I rest. My daughter dined here the other night and came home raving about it so I had to see for myself. I ordered crispy shrimp spring rolls and grilled pork pho. The spring rolls were delicious and the pho was warm and comforting. One thing I might add however, is I expected the pork to be a slow grilled meaty pork chop. Thick and tender. I received grilled pork but it was very thin . More like "shaved" pork. It still tasted ok, however I was a tiny bit disappointed. The place is small and it felt like it was important to eat and depart, however the food was decent and the complimentary coconut jello was a sweet surprise. (BYOB!)

My previous review 6 years ago I gave 1 star for the Pho Ga since it was literally inedible, and I haven't been back since (see previous review) Two nights ago, I had a hankering for Pho Ga and this was the best convenient option for me at the time. I decided that it's been 6 years, the place is still open - maybe that 1 star review was just a bad night.. I'll give them a try on takeout. I ordered on Grubhub and the order was ready upon arrival, easy pick up process. I am happy to report that the Pho Ga was good! Solid broth, the noodles were a little al-dente and undercooked, but only barely. My go-to for the last 6 years in this area has been Vietnam Cafe and I still think their broth is more flavorful, but their portion is slightly smaller. I'm glad to say that based on my experience, I would have no issues returning back when I'm craving pho in this area.

Stir fried vegetables and tofu w. Vermicelli

Pretty Reliable pho spot with some good vegetarian options! I usually opt for the special pho chay, the taro wontons are to die for and taste uncannily meat-ish (make sure to specify to add them if youre ordering thru snackpass or another delivery app cuz sometimes they forget). Drinks are great here, really cant go wrong with any esp like the avocado smoothie and vietnamese ice coffee. I got the stir fried vermicelli w tofu this time around and it was okay, probably wouldnt get again. Also had a mix up with the numbers while ordering -- tried to get a #59 on the drink menu to go but by accident a broken rice food dish came out. Just make sure to b specific abt what your order is!

Honestly not bad. I'm more impressed with the non-pho options here. The food was cooked well and my catfish in clay pot was immaculate. The only real gripe I have is the fact that the prices here are quite high. The meatball springrolls were interesting but not something I would ever get again but the sauce it was served with was delicious. The fried sping rolls were also fried well but a bit heavy and debatably almost too much food.

New owners update: apparently they took over in April, and have since reopened in August. Man, I was kinda excited seeing the new sign, decor, and cool renovation but the food has sunk to worse/less authentic than before. However, the new renovation has attracted a lot more customers than before I think. We ordered a bowl of deluxe pho and pork/spring roll vermicelli, and both didn't taste as great as I had hoped. The broth of the pho was overly sweet(?) and lacked depth of flavor :( They did give a free coconut jelly at the end which was cute though. Everyone working there seemed young and quite new.

Great place quick service and even better food in my opinion very cozy they never rush you they closed at 9pm during the week I believe and I went at 845 they let me stay until I was finished even gave me bottle of wine and orange on the house made me feel special around the holiday lol

Grilled chicken vermicelli

This place is amazing! The grilled chicken was amazing however I probably wouldn't get it with vermicelli again. The pho was super flavorful and the noodles were just the perfect amount of tender and chewy. The curry was also super flavorful and the bowl was hugeee. The spring rolls were also delicious. Got the thai tea and it was nothing special. They have a HUGE drink menu so next time I would probably try something a little different like dragonfruit lychee or something. Outdoor seating is nice. In the summer they have these super powerful fans. It was 90 degrees outside but with their fans I ended up getting super chilly. During the winter they have heaters that work super well too. The place is also decorated everywhere with flowers and plants, super cute. 10000% coming back. Everyone was super sweet too thanks guys :)

Salt and pepper pork but without the rice. I subbed for the salad instead.

The pork is tender and slightly crispy on the outside. This is my first time at this place, and I am impressed that I went back for dinner. I'm not from Philly, but I will return when I'm in town. Give it a try. You won't regret it.

GOSH I wish I could give this place 5 stars just based off of the Fish Sauce Chicken Wings alone!!! Literally SO GOOD. I have gotten it twice now and I absolutely loved it. You cannot go wrong with anything that you order from here, the quality is so great and fresh! I also got a Vermicelli bowl and it was so delicious. However, I do give it 4 stars because of the price. I'm not sure if it is because this is located in University City, but for the price point I would hope to get a bit bigger portion sizes. I have been to several Vietnamese restaurants in Philly and either the portions match the price or it's cheaper for less food. I do want to emphasize again though that I wish I could give this place 5 stars based off of the food alone. The service was good. It's a cute restaurant with outdoor seating and there is a fan in the inside when it's hot but still has you sweatin a bit inside since it's not actual AC, not complaining just an FYI for future customers. I do love this place and I will for sure be back (with or without friends)!

Coming from California, specifically getting my weekly pho fix at Garden Grove comes with great expectations for pho. Sadly, Pho & Cafe Saigon isn't even on the same tier as their broth is filled with msg and frail cuts of meat. In my opinion the pho deserved a two star but the server and owner of the shop was really sweet so I'll bump it up to a three! Their complimentary coconut dessert was really refreshing and reminded me of the ones my mom use to make.

The biggest surprise was the tái (eye-round steak), yet still retaining that pleasantly chewy texture of undercooked beef; the gầu (fat brisket) was thick and crisp, fragrant but not greasy--who would have thought I'd find brisket fat here? This showed the restaurant's precise control over the broth temperature and the thickness of the beef. Almost all phở restaurants claim to offer authentic raw beef or various cuts of beef, but very few can truly make customers feel the difference. The restaurant's decor is simple but spacious and clean; the service is average, but very efficient. Efficiency is essential for phở, otherwise the beef would be overcooked in the hot broth. After all, the essence of a restaurant is food, and for such affordable ones, it's gratifying to see them spend most of their costs on the food itself.

Pho Today is an enormous restaurant which does authentic Vietnamese very well. I honestly believe…read moretheir broth is better than Pho '75 across the street which seemed rather sweet to me. They have great meats. Their hearty Buns will blow your mind: as noted, the House Special is practically enough for two people. You'll also see many people eating the Prime Rib Pho which is quite different. to me it looks a bit unwieldly (much prefer meats cut into the broth). Their Bún Riêu, Duck Soup (served with a unique ginger sauce and bamboo shoots) and Bún bò Huế all hit the mark. Pho Today gives you two choices for the classic Fish In Pottery Pot, bone-off and bone-on. Many Vietnamese restaurants don't carry this anymore. One thing I should tell y'all is that, when you order your meal, ask for the homemade chilli oil.....they won't give it to you unless you ask: it's made with garlic and is really special. If I were to nitpick I'd suggest upping the ante on the spring rolls which are more of a footnote here. I much prefer the larger spring rolls, cut into 4 sections served with basil, veggies and lettuce for wrapping. But, yea, this place does a really good job and seems to be the go-to for both Vietnamese food and serious eaters.
