STEPH JUDGEMENT: A natural wonder worth visiting…read more In all the years I've driven up and down the 395 on the way to and from Mammoth I never made that turn at Big Pine to visit this ancient wonder, as it's not just a short detour. This last time the hubby and I went to Mammoth, though, i was determined to visit this place, so we drove out the 25 miles to the visitor center (closed), gaining quite a bit of altitude along the way. The said altitude prevented us from doing the fairly easy hikes near the visitor center, as we hadn't been up this way in a while and weren't feeling acclimated enough. We got to take in plenty of fantastic scenery, though, at various lookout points and especially on the drive out to Patriarch Grove, where we got to see the environment change drastically from scrubby green hills to desolate sandy soil with the signature gnarly bristle cone pine trees. It was worth the bumpy unpaved road and finding out that the last mile was snowed out. Would definitely love to come back and do those hikes!

We parked in front of the Visitor Center and went on the Discovery Trail. It took us an hour to complete. We started on the right side of the loop, and I was just gasping for air. We saw the beautiful Bristlecone trees on the trail. As we continued on to the left side of the loop, we had to walk on the big red rocks. That part was not enjoyable at all as we had to be careful not to trip. However, the views were so wonderful. It's a clear trail, so there is no getting lost.

Our dog absolutely loved it! We were able to drive around certain spots to go fishing in the lakes. Just be aware. There is no type of signal in the campground, which was actually pretty nice. I definitely recommend the spot if you're trying to do a weekend getaway!

Helpful, friendly not overpowering and aggressive like the current camp host. They do not need my business...I do need this camp ground! There are plenty others, and less expensive if you dry camp. I tow a 2025 Flagstaff Classic...it works just as well in a full hookup or dry camping. I'll leave you with this review...you can make up your own mind. The host is a very rude person and I will never come back EVER!!!!! We have been coming here for 10 years and some years we visited 2 to 3 times during the year. So disappointing to see how much it's gone down. The camp host's Sandy, Joe and Miss Lulu are the sweetest people ever! An attendant watching the pool for safety. Lounge chairs in the sun, chairs and lots of opportunities for shade. A hot water area and a really good size pool for swimming, with a shallow end and a deep end, well signed for depths. They have many snacks and drinks available as well as ice cream. Changing rooms and showers (no soap allowed).No balls or inner tubes allowed but small noodles are ok. All employees were friendly. Overall an awesome place. Recommend: small pad in order to sit in hot tub as the floor is a little rough.

Do not be discouraged of its distance away from the 395 and Bishop, although it is located at high elevation and in the Eastern Sierra mountain range, the road is well paved, wide, and easy to traverse in most vehicles. The campsites along the creek are beautiful, and offer much shade which is helpful in the daytime. The creek is beautiful and well flowing, offering a serene sleeping experience. The surrounding Bishop Creek looks great for fishing, but those fish don't bite anything. Camp Hosts were awesome and very friendly and welcoming.

South lake was not so good. Maybe because the lake has been drained by SCE it is so low that it was just to warm to fish. However, everything else was good. The creek fishing was almost like cheating. Throw in and out comes a fish, really great. No generators to deal with this trip. The camp across from us did turn on a generator but turned it off when they finished using it. Much appreciated. I decided to take a hike this year up to Blue Lake, about 3 miles above Lake Sabrina on the John Muir Trail. The hike is great! your climbing up a thousand feet however and that's the drawback but its worth the hike. Really a spectacular ending to the hike when you reach Blue Lake. We didn't fish this trip we wanted to get a feel for the hike before we carried our gear to fish the lake. We saw Brown Trout the size of hatchery trout in the lake. We are definitely going back next year. I will relegate this review to the hike to Blue Lake as you can read my other reviews which there is not much to add other than the campground is starting to get "known" lots of campers this time. I had to advise campers who were fishing at the creek behind our campsite to go around and not bring the dog and family through my campsite to get to the road. The hike on the John Muir Trail is good but not easy. The whole trail has been improved. the forest service has improved the trail with stepping stones and stone stairs. No problem staying on the trail. We met a lot of hikers coming both ways. I was kind of surprised to see people going up the trail late in the afternoon. The trail takes about 3 hours to get to Blue Lake and about 2 hours to get back to the trail head. Most of the people had not been on the trail before. I hope they brought some flashlights. Blue Lake is beautiful. When you get there you feel like you are the only person there and you are. The water is pristine, calm and crystal clear. I am very happy I made the hike with my son. Its an adventure we will remember for the rest of our lives. Its Gods country up there. Just immaculate! You are allowed to take the dog on the trail which we did. He pulled me along about half way up the trail. Then I had to encourage him the rest of the way. We took many breaks and ate lunch at one of the waterfalls on the trail. I took the lead as I am not in the best of shape and my son followed behind. I think my son could out run a mountain goat as he is in the best of shape, I kept him the back following behind just in case i had a heart attack. But we made it even though I huffed and puffed the whole way up. The altitude is from 9000 feet at the trail head and you climb to10000 feet, so acclimate before you decide to hike. We did and I was better off for it my son the stud probably didn't need to but he was a good guy and was patient. The camping trip was great again and I had a great time. No bears and the rodents were less than I had seen in the past. It did shower in the afternoon for a couple of days. Good food and great company and a another unforgettable family experience! Now, this comment is for those who do not camp regularly. Do not cross through another campers campsite. It is not only rude, you may be attacked by the campsite dog. Walk around. There is always a way around a campsite. Keep your dog on a leash. I had a big brown dog come into my campsite twice. At which point I had to ask the camp host to advise the campers to control their dog. Dogs are one of Gods greatest gifts, but keep them out of other campers campsites. If my dog had seen that brown dog he would have tried to protect us. And that would have been anything but good. Okay, Four Jeffery is a jewel in the Eastern Sierras. Ah-May-Zing! I…read moreheard about Lake Ediza last year while on my way to Garnet via Shadow Creek. Fortunately I had a chance to trek up to Ediza this year. I was told that between the split off from the JMT to go towards Garnet and Lake Ediza there was a piece of Heaven on Earth. Truly the scenery was enlightening. Shadow creek was booming (even in this drought). Like all the high elevation lakes it's quite a trek to get there but the payoff is well worth the pain. When we arrived there wasn't too many good camping spots. We had to go around the lake towards the southwest section and camped a little off the trail. If we had just gone a bit further crossing a small creek to the "island" we would have found an even better spot by the beach area under the cover of some trees. My advice: Get there early and grab a good spot. As beautiful as Lake Ediza is it can get busy. Not Thousand Island Lakes busy, but busy nonetheless.
