Ask the Community - Grandview Campground

    Why is it closed?

Grandview is the one Inyo National Forest campground located on the White Mountain road, as opposed, say, to the 4 or so campgrounds located at the end of Big Pine road. It would take 1/2 day to drive to that one campground & back. My understanding… Read more

What are the odds of getting a campsite at Grandview if arriving on a Sunday afternoon? Though, this would be July 1, so close to the 4th holiday?

Great vault toilets, fire rings and tables, but that's about it for amenities.

It's already a little slushy near the Schulman Visitor center, but beyond that, it's deeper, messier, and just not possible without an offroading vehicle. And even that might be a little dicey. So you might make it as far as the visitor center until it snows again, but it is now closed for the winter. A few other things to note: the elevation will make you THIRSTY. Bring more water than you normally would. And a hat/sunscreen, because the sun is more intense up here! Lastly, it takes a little *more* than an hour to get as far as the visitor center but is absolutely worth the drive!

The views were so gorgeous that we did make a few stops. We parked in front of the Visitor Center and went on the Discovery Trail. It took us an hour to complete. We started on the right side of the loop, and I was just gasping for air. We saw the beautiful Bristlecone trees on the trail. As we continued on to the left side of the loop, we had to walk on the big red rocks. That part was not enjoyable at all as we had to be careful not to trip. However, the views were so wonderful. It's a clear trail, so there is no getting lost.

It always starts with GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!…read moreSecondly...a clean and inviting campground! There are a few other fixes, improvements...but that's not MY job to expose these needs! My job is to enjoy a well kept, customer friendly, campground. Been coming here for 10 years...Carla, Pam , Kristian and the camp host before them were truly nice people! Helpful, friendly not overpowering and aggressive like the current camp host. They do not need my business...I do need this camp ground! There are plenty others, and less expensive if you dry camp. I tow a 2025 Flagstaff Classic...it works just as well in a full hookup or dry camping. I'll leave you with this review...you can make up your own mind. Normally I never do yelp reviews...but this experience with the New camp host, I want to say what I thought, leave it here, and move on! End of story!

The host is a very rude person and I will never come back EVER!!!!! We have been coming here for 10 years and some years we visited 2 to 3 times during the year. So disappointing to see how much it's gone down. We loved our camp host Pam who helped us out so much she went out of her way to keep the campgrounds clean and safe and bathrooms were clean, christen who worked there also helped out a lot she helped Pam run the campground!!!! Last year Carla who was there running the campground at the time helped us booked a spot for this year . Now there's a Karen(Robin) person who just wouldn't work with us and she's very rude and has no consideration for her camper's

Duration: 7 to 8 hours, though 2 days is preferable. Season: Late June through mid-October. Trailhead Elevation: 8,300 feet Top Elevation: 9,300 feet Other Uses: Equestrians and leashed dogs are welcome. Bikes are not allowed in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. In a region of exceptionally stunning lakes, Shadow and Ediza are two of the loveliest. Both harbor views of the Ritter Range that are among the finest mountain landscapes in the Sierra Nevada. Rolling through green meadows, conifer forests, and rocky outcrops, the trail rises by gradual degrees up the valley of Shadow Creek in view of Volcanic Ridge, to the left (south). Some stretches have been finessed through rocky benches by the vigorous application of picks, shovels, and maybe a surgical stick or two of dynamite. The best of company, frolicsome Shadow Creek entertains us with music and assorted pretty little tricks, including a very clever cascade around an island of polished granite

Ah-May-Zing! I…read moreheard about Lake Ediza last year while on my way to Garnet via Shadow Creek. Fortunately I had a chance to trek up to Ediza this year. I was told that between the split off from the JMT to go towards Garnet and Lake Ediza there was a piece of Heaven on Earth. Truly the scenery was enlightening. Shadow creek was booming (even in this drought). Like all the high elevation lakes it's quite a trek to get there but the payoff is well worth the pain. When we arrived there wasn't too many good camping spots. We had to go around the lake towards the southwest section and camped a little off the trail. If we had just gone a bit further crossing a small creek to the "island" we would have found an even better spot by the beach area under the cover of some trees. My advice: Get there early and grab a good spot. As beautiful as Lake Ediza is it can get busy. Not Thousand Island Lakes busy, but busy nonetheless.

The lake itself you can't swim in according to the rangers due to the power utilities stuff that are there. You can fish can canoe though. There's two areas to this campground, upper and lower. We originally headed down to lower Intake 2, those sites were nestled right next to the river, but we found another one at upper intake that was well shaded and it was more secluded. We later found out there was also an easy access to the river over the hill for shower rinsing needs. The cost was $24.00 a night and $7.00 extra flat fee for an extra car coming out to $55.00 for two nights. The paid parking area only fit about 4-5 cars at best or else you'll have to try your luck at the first come, first serve parking lot (that's right next to paid parking lot). There were two restroom buildings, the farther one was vaulted (no sink) and had recycling bins right outside. The one closer to our site had running water (had a sink and drinking water fountain) and flushable toilets. For a first timer camper, I definitely really liked this campsite a lot, it was close to the hiking trails that we wanted to do as well.
