If you're looking for equipment to start your first triathlon, this is the place to go in the Triangle! No, really - its one of two places that cater to the population. Despite their "only shop in town" status, there must be a reason for it - the staff there is always friendly, and very ready to help you out. I went in for a bike fitting over the weekend, and was greeted enthusiastically. I was taken around and shown all the bikes that might possibly fit me, and given complete flexibility on how I wanted to go about bike shopping. When we were done with the fitting, they offered to let me take the bike and try it out for a couple of days - not all bike shops in the area do that (for free no less!), so its important to note. Taking a quick look around, they do have all the supplies you'd need - tri shorts, wetsuits, tri tops, full outfits, bibs, swimsuits, goggles, earplugs, bikes, etc.. a pretty good variety, too. They carry a lot of the best tri bike brands, so whether you are just starting out or an experienced triathlete, this is a great place to shop for the big items. The prices on the smaller components (tires, etc) were notably higher than somewhere like Performance - but that usually happens with independent bike shops since they don't move as much volume on those parts. read more

Great Local Triathlon Shop! Inside-Out Sports (aka IOS) is a great store for anyone into swim and/or bike and/or run. They make sure you get what you need and nothing more. Ive been going to them for a year now and just recently I had the opportunity to buy some race wheels on sale. The owner, Cid, and the bike shop walked me through each of the items needed for FAST race wheels. Cid, actually talked me OUT of buying a new cassette to go with the wheels and showed me how to change the cassette Ok now for the breakdown: Running (A-): IOS carries a variety of running shoes, and allow you to try on the treadmill in-store, but also have a 14 day worn-as-is exchange policy that you wont be able to find online. Even if your shoe isn't in stock, they can often order the shoe and still give you that policy Bike (A+ for racing bicycles, NA for Casual Bikes): This is the only shop in Raleigh that I would trust buying a triathlon specialty bike. Honestly, if you are looking for a bike to cruise around on at a leisurely pace, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you have a need for speed, this shop is hands down the best, with Tri-Bike service, maintenance, and fitting. In addition they sell a lot of the accessories that you might need. Swim (B+): They carry everything you might need to swim, but are almost entirely triathlon and open water focused. They have a good collection of wetsuits for triathlons and open water swims, but a specialty swim store might be better for those on a swim team Community Engagement (A+): IOS Sponsors many local races and events, including group rides on Tu/Th at 6pm and a local triathlon club. Wow, went in because we had time to kill and I always like to visit bike shops when I'm on travel. This one did not disappoint!! A whole staff with ironman experience to answer all your Tri questions as well as sales and a huge selection. My wife and I both walked out with a pair of shoes and the gentleman who helped us talked us through everything to include a very non-biased look at a variety of shoes. He broke it down to my wife how she was running and why she needed the type of shoes she did and then through trial and error found the ones her feet liked the most. Excellent customer service. I purchased an XLab delta 400 and I actually needed a 425 I live almost 3 hours away and was very hesitant to drive all the way back to the store. After having a very poor experience here in Ohio, my husband and I went online to find a triathlon bike. This store was amazing. Without even a second thought the clerks stayed on the phone and online with us several times over the course of a few days shopping for the perfect bike. He answered questions, was very patient and overall sold us an excellent bike. He even helped us save some money and determine the right size from several states away. The bike arrived boxed and shipped in beautiful shape. The woman who took care of me was so great and SO helpful! I was completely clueless to what I wanted, aside from a pair of running shoes and she knew exactly how to help and get me the best shoes for the best deal. I decided to try to pick up running as a hobby, I have friends who do run clubs (shout out to Rebecca R.) and love it, so I figured it would be a great way to get in shape and get ready to run some 5ks! I chose this place because of a deal I got off of Living Social ($25 for $50 worth of running shoes). Anyway I went into the store having NO idea what I was looking for. She asked me what kind of runner I was and if I needed shoes for motion or stability. Of course I had no idea, so I just kinda looked at her and dumbly replied "I'm not sure." She had me walk and jog around the store a few times in my socks, and was able to determine what kind of shoe would be best for my foot. She brought out several pairs to try on, explaining the differences in each one. I finally decided on a pair that were about $100, but I got $25 off because of my deal! I used them the same night I bought them, and I think they worked out great! I could barely walk after my 3 mile run, but that is more because of my lack of being in shape, not so much my footwear, but hey with my new shoes I can only improve from here! Went here to get my husband set up for his first tri and they were great. Were greeted by a friendly sales rep who helped us get everything we need. Showed us the differences between all the clothing options and which works best for the tri world. Also fit my husband for a new pair of running shoes which he desperately needed. Have a great selection. I like that they weren't throwing us to the wolves. There are so many things you could buy for a tri, but they weren't telling us that we "had" to. They showed us what we needed and then went from there to see if we wanted anything else. A lot of stores will try to convince you that you "need" so much more. Will definitely be back. read more

I think of this as the mega option for gear. They have everything for triathletes, which I'm not, but I do run, swim and ride my bike....just not all in the same 3 hour period. The shop is large by specialty norms to accommodate the vast array of stuff you need to do all these things. When the weather doesn't seem conducive to outdoor sports this is the place to still find what you need. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, though always pretty busy. I don't get the friendly feel when I come in and they do exude a bit of triathlete superiority. I'd prefer the smaller, friendlier stores but they don't have the selection that Inside-Out does at all times, so this is the fall back. They organize rides weekly, if you are looking for a group to help motivate you to get your bike out on the road, this is a good spot. read more

My wife ran in one of the Inside Out events and used the 20% discount to go get fitted for a pair of shoes in the store. All three times she ran in them, her right foot went numb. After contacting ASICS, they told us to talk with the store manager and have him evaluate the shoe. He says there's nothing wrong with it so won't send it to ASICS under their two-year (!) warranty. He said maybe the shoe doesn't fit right. When I told him she was fitted there and that they should own that problem, he offered a 50% discount on a new pair of shoes. The shoe is a lemon - google the 2170 and see that this is a common problem. They won't help us with that or the fit issue, whichever it is. So now for our $$$, we get nothing more than a laugh at calling them "Up-Yours Sports". read more

Before moving into the area, I visited Inside Out a few times to get some triathlon specific gear. Now that I am local, I love visiting to pick up gear or just browse the merchandise and talk with the staff. The store hosts all kinds of events including group bike rides and other social activities throughout the year, which are not to be missed. On the services side, I took my new tri bike in for a fitting and received first class treatment. The fit technician took a great deal of time and meticulous care to go through all the aspects of the fit. I was the given ample opportunity to take my bike out for a few test rides in order to check the fit/feel. It was not the cheapest option for fitting, but you definitely get your money's worth in the process. This location is very well stocked with everything from goggles to wetsuits to bikes to running shoes and offers some of the best brands available for all 3 sports. The real draw, however, is the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Most of them, if not all, are competitors in one or more of the three disciplines and have a tremendous amount of knowledge. They offer sound advice and will talk about any aspect you are curious about without giving you the feeling that they are following you. Overall, this my favorite triathlon store. I am new in town, so have no purchase history with the store. I tried to drop off my MTB for some work, they're close to home and appeared competent... they refused to provide me with any receipt for my bike??? WTF??? I took my bike over to Cycling Spoken Here, just around the corner and had delightful conversation, excellent service and saw some neat new toys to buy... I can't speak for their Cary location, but the one in North Raleigh definitely leaves something to be desired. I took my new (to me) bike in for a bike fit and tune up to make sure I was ready for the road. The bike fit was great, but they did not do the tune up at all (after leaving the bike with them for over a week). I was told I needed a new bottom bracket and new brake pads - after I got my bike back I could tell something was wrong and took it elsewhere. The mechanic told me both wheels not only needed truing but were on backwards, the bottom bracket they installed wasn't compatible with my cranks, and the brake cables weren't on properly (I was lucky I didn't end up in a ditch). I still gave IOS the benefit of the doubt and calmly called the shop to discuss all of the above with a manager. The woman I spoke to apologized profusely, blamed it on being shorthanded, and told me she'd call back after talking with the owner. That was 3 weeks ago. It would have been nice if they'd at least offered to refund the cost of the bottom bracket that was USELESS to me, but evidently not. I had wanted to support a local business but nope. I'm out $160+ and I still had to pay someone else to fix my bike. Really, really disappointed in IOS. read more
