I recently purchased a condo in a renovated warehouse which overlooks a former riverside rail yard. The renovations were clearly designed with acoustics in mind as there are high quality energy efficient windows and several acoustic baffles in the ceilings and walls. They also had views in mind as it is a large open floorplan with high ceilings and wall-to-wall windows. With 5 active train tracks and Mississippi River traffic, some noise made its way into the building. The worst of the noise occurs when locomotives park outside the building and/or brake as they went through the yard. I found myself sleeping with white noise, and earplugs on occasion. I purchased Indow acoustic inserts for the windows face the tracks/river traffic -- my master bedroom and office portion of the living space. The inserts have made a huge improvement in my quality of life. The trains and river sound like they are blocks away, despite being right outside my windows. The locomotives are a light rumble, and I don't even notice the brake noise anymore. I can take conference calls on speakerphone and not be interrupted. I can sleep soundly without white noise or earplugs. I can even watch movies in the living area and not have to pause for passing trains or steamships - and those windows don't have the inserts! The measuring process was fairly easy - good tools, good instructions and videos are provided, however plan on spending 15-20 minutes on the first window. The others took about 5-10 minutes. The windows were finished in 2 weeks and shipped on an LTL carrier - delivered the following week. They were shipped in a custom built pallet and arrived in perfect condition. I borrowed a neighbor to help me install - again the first window took about 20 minutes and some finessing to get a good technique. The instructions are very good, but there's an element of trial and error for best fit. The other inserts were up in less that 10 minutes each. They blend right in - which is great because my HOA has tight rules around what can/can't be placed in windows. From the outside they are invisible, and from the inside they're invisible until you try to adjust the blinds. The inserts were a little pricey - namely due to the size of windows - but they are worth every penny because they work. In fact they work better than what I imagined. I recently purchased window inserts from a company in Portland, OR called Indow Windows (https://indowwindows.com). I was tired of hearing all the sounds of the city, especially cars, trucks, and pedestrians. I had been searching for a good solution for years. For example, I checked out City Proof Windows and visited their factory in Long Island City. In the end, I did not buy them because I did not like the appearance of an internal double-hung window made of aluminum and they had to be permanently installed. Plus, they were about $1,800 a window. When browsing the web one day, I came upon Indow Windows. They have a patented product that slips into the inside frame of a window. That's it for installation. No hammering or drilling required. The clear plexiglass is 1/4" thick and it's surrounded by a compression tube that holds it in the frame. I won't bore you with all the details, which you can see on the website, which I linked above. The bottom line is that the window inserts have dramatically cut down on all noise. I no longer hear pedestrians or passing cars. Low frequencies sounds are harder to block, but even the deep rumble of a diesel engine is now only a faint background noise. I can still hear ambulance sirens, but it is much less intrusive. In all, I would say that it's like night and day compared to my previous situation (I have new double-pane windows, but find that they do not block much noise on their own -- they're better than single pane, but not by much). These inserts are about one-third the price of the typical City Proof windows and I'm confident that they are just as effective at blocking noise. Pros: Substantially blocks noise; energy efficient; visually not noticeable; can be easily removed (unlike City Proof windows). Cons: Can still hear sirens, but at a reduced level; have to remove the insert in order to open a window. I highly recommend these inserts for anyone who wants a quiet home environment and wants to save a large amount of money compared to the alternatives. I also like the fact that I can easily remove the window inserts and there is no alteration to my existing window frames. read more

A dirt road was paved, behind our house, turning it into the "Indy 500" racetrack by most drivers, motorcyclists, contractor vehicles, gravel and cement trucks. It made our quiet, enjoyable home into a sound distraction. After much research of all options, I decided to order Indow windows. My first contact was with Shane Miller. He had exceptional knowledge of the windows and answered 5+ e-mails/phone calls with several questions in each one. Best of all, he answered them very promptly. He is personable, trustworthy, very enjoyable and shows interest in every potential customers, remembering what they said in previous conversations. That is rare. The next contact was with Eli Nicholson. He answered several emails and called to help with the portal window to record window measurements and to place the order. It was simple and easy to do. Our 3 windows were 69-93"L and 45-51"H. They arrived in a wooden crate, well-protected, and were clear as glass. The noise reduction from Indow Windows installation made a significant difference. We barely hear normal cars and SUV's or newer pickups. They are a whisper. Pickups without mufflers, Harleys, construction trucks noise is decreased by 50% or more, making their sounds lower in pitch and muffled. That makes life good again! There are 3 smaller windows that we will order in the near future, near the big Indow windows installed I know that will further reduce the noise. No window replacement could have reduced the noise level at the same cost as Indow Windows. I can tell they will help with energy efficiency. The air cannot get past them with the secure seal. I ordered 6 of Indow's museum-grade panels for my living room to protect my artwork and heirloom furniture that has been in the family for generations. I have big windows -- about 10ft x 10ft -- and also a couple of half moons that go with the vaulted cielings. Indow was able to make inserts for all of them, even the odd shapes. The Indow rep, Nancy, was very nice and incredibly helpful. I did get a little confused on how to use the laser measure kit, but she was able to walk me through it. I expected the window inserts to be clear, which they were. Actually, they were invisible. They don't glare and they blend in even better than I expected. A pleasant surprise was how much noise reduction there was. We live next to a busy street and the reduction in noise once they were installed was dramatic. The house is also warmer now. I live in Carmel, CA -- think constant San Francisco cloudy cool weather. And the house had been drafty. I used crank the heat up because I get cold really easily, but now I don't have to. I actually saw my electric bill decrease by about 20%. Now I'm actually finding myself USING that room, which is really the most beautiful room in the house but before I'd avoided spending time in it because it was always too hot or too cold. Now I use the room a lot more. The other thing is my allergies are better because I'm not having to constantly turn on and off the central heating, which would kick up dust, which I'm very allergic too. My family and I live in an old bungalow with double hung circa 1922 wood windows. In 2008 we added a second story with modern wood Marvin windows and kept 16 original windows on the main floor. It was immediately apparent that, in the winter, the upstairs was liveable and the downstairs was not. It was very uncomfortable to sit or sleep near the old windows when the weather was cold. I contacted our contractor about getting Marvin windows to replace our original windows but the cost was ridiculous. When Indow Windows first opened shop in Portland in 2011 we had all of our old windows updated with their inserts for a small fraction of the price of new Marvin double hungs. Our main floor is as draft-free as the upstairs. Unless you are looking for them the inserts are completely invisible, blending extremely well with our white window sills and frames. It started out with buying a house i loved that had no flaws. But the first night I spent in the house I realized the road next to the master bedroom was louder than my prior visits. I am a light sleeper, and needless to say, it spoiled the honeymoon period in my new house. I thought about getting fiberglass blankets and putting them up every night and taking them down every morning. But I happened to stumble upon Indow. I found out about Indow from an advertisement in a magazine. I thought "Let's see what they have to offer". I have original windows in my 1927 Craftsman house and I wanted to keep them for the charm of the house. However, they are so drafty and I am sick of having plastic on my windows almost 6 months of the year in Wisconsin. I contacted them and James was so helpful with the whole process. I took the plunge and got inserts for all 21 original windows. When I compared my invoice to what it would have cost to replace 21 windows and all the headache involved, I got the better end of the bargain. We bought 2 to see how they would work in bedrooms prior to ordering 3 more for our front room. The second morning after install my wife said she slept deeply for the first time in a couple years. She equated her sleep to being exhausted from a busy work routine. Was back and forth whether I should try an insert versus looking into a complete replacement for a room in our home that was both drafty and has a street noise issue. I took the chance with three acoustic panels and they have solved both the draft issue which is no longer there as well as the noise reduction which they promised with a 50 percent reduction - I have at minimum a 50 percent reduction - actually more if I really had it in me to measure the reduction. If you're thinking about ordering but are on the "fence", I would recommend to go for it. The measuring process is really easy for a rectangle frame and the inserts as many have said need to be pointed out to someone in order to tell they are actually there. Customer service was excellent. Highly recommended. Our bedroom window was letting in more air and noise than I was comfortable with. I got a quote from a different company and the price was over $2500 for sound proof windows. Plus i would have to hire someone to install them. I'm so glad I found Indow. Brian was really helpful and gave me his cell number to call/ text if I had any questions. (I must have called/ Texted him at least 6 times :) The quote he gave me was under $600 and claimed the installation was simple enough for me to do myself. Measuring was easy, the order came in about 2 weeks after I placed it, and the installing was really easy. We recently purchased a home near a busy road. I wasn't sleeping through the night, so we looked into window inserts for the master bedroom. Indow was very helpful from the beginning. After the initial sticker shock, we decided it would be a worthwhile investment. After discussions with Indow, we ordered the acoustic grade insert. The measuring kit was easy to use, and the production turn around time was quick. Install was a breeze, the fit perfectly into my windows and blend right in with the frame. You'd never know they were there. At first, the noise didn't dampen at all! I was a little disappointed. We moved them to another room, and saw a drastic different. We discovered the installation in the master bedroom was not efficient. The inserts really work, but if the wall surrounding the window aren't also set up to block noise, it doesn't really help. read more

Our house has that old cottage charm, which comes with drafty, pulley-style, single pane, wooden windows. I didn't have the heart to update the beautiful windows, nor to add unsightly storm windows to the outside. However, without a central heating system, the bedrooms were becoming unbearably cold in winter, and uncomfortably hot in summer. We LOVE our Indow Windows! We've had them for six months and the experience is great. We were able to improve comfort, sound reduction, reduce heat loss all the while preserving several large, old windows with ornamental leaded panes we have in our 1918 house. Plus, we "Indowed" other smaller windows to reduce heat loss and not have to go through the expense of window replacement. We installed them ourselves and the benefit was immediate. We were also amazed how good they look. They really disappear into the window frame. My only advice is to pay close attention to measuring. My house is brand new (2020) and has double pane windows, but it is situated closer to a street so I could hear the swish of cars going by. After doing some online research I discovered Indow. It was a very easy process to contact Indow, speak to one of their representatives, measure and install the insert. There is a noticeable difference in the reduction of sound in the room with the acoustic inserts versus rooms that do not have them. With these results I will be installing them on my other street facing windows. An additional benefit is the thermal insulation to the window. We love our Indow inserts! We live in a 100-year-old house and they virtually disappear into the existing frames while significantly improving insulation compared to the original tempered glass. The measuring and installation process isn't hard, though it does take some time. That is to be said about any sort of window treatments, however. Simply allow for time to measure correctly and you will be amazed at how well the inserts fit and perform. Indow was the perfect solution for our windows. Because we live in tudor house, the windows were very old (have never been replaced) and extremely costly to replace, especially within the standards of our town. The process was initiated with an online request for an estimate for six inserts on Sep 12, 2019, and went smoothly, with the telephone appointment, receipt of the laser measuring kit, submission of the measurements online, and return of the measuring kit. The inserts were shipped with UPS on Oct 14 and were received only two days later on Vancouver Island (so no problem with shipping to Canada). All six inserts were installed within an hour and a half. They have made a big difference; the room with the inserts is now well insulated. Indow staff were very helpful throughout.
