Some friends and I passed through BR while fleeing a storm almost 3 years ago now. They insulted on stopping at India's restaurant foe the buffet, and though everything looked and smelled incredible, I was unable to eat as my stomach was giving me trouble. Been wanting to return for a meal ever since. Finally got that opportunity last month while my mom was visiting. We had a little day trip and stopped in for dinner on the way home. I got the vegetarian thali dinner, with potatoes subbed for paneer in two of the curries. It was delicious--all of it! Comes with saag, veggie korma, and a dark lentil dal, with naan, samosas, kheer, and even papadums! Man, I love papadums, and most places stopped giving them out at the beginning of meals. They used to be served as a complimentary app like chips and salsa. But seriously, such a good meal. I still want to go back for the buffet sometime. My only criticism: the dining room could be kept warmer. It was a cold night and we were rather chilly. read more

Unless you ask directly, charges are not explained. Only when questioned do you get a vague answer that it is normal. The food here is amazing. I ordered the Garlic Naan (off-menu but I've learned that every Indian restaurant CAN do it). This was excellent and fresh and so yummy. Then I got the Honey Chilli Cauliflower. Also yummy but definitely on the spicy-hot side. Next V time I'll ask them to tone down the heat. But it was yummy. I also ordered the Apollo Fish. Also spicy-hot but amazingly good. I don't know what type of fish it was but the sauce was yummy and spicy. The menu said it was marinated without any description of what. I also ordered the Taj Mahal beer. It was 22 ounces and too big for me, but that's a personal issue. read more

I've been going to India's for many years. It has been in business on Essen Lane since at least the 1990s. It is an excellent place to try out and enjoy Indian Cuisine. My favorite time to visit is during lunch, when they have their great buffet. This is a wonderful way to try out different dishes, and learn what one likes. It is also a way to sample different sauces and condiments, of which there are many in Indian cooking. My favorite condiment is undoubtably hot pickle, which involves pickled vegetables in a scorching sauce. This brings up an important point about Indian food, if it is labeled as "hot" or "spicy" it usually is VERY hot and or spicy. Not everything is spicy though, many things are quite mild. There are so many dishes available, it is difficult to describe! Many Indian dishes involve a thick sauce and are served over basmati rice, so folks from South Louisiana should be able to relate with these. There is a nice flatbread called Naan that one eats with the main courses. There are chicken dishes that are fried or roasted. Biryani is a rice dish with meats and vegetables cooked into it. Lastly there are various deserts to end the meal. These include fruit custards, and often a succulently spiced bread pudding. India's is located on Essen near Perkins, but it is close enough to the Interstate that travelers passing through can easily access it and then get back on the highway. India's is a restaurant that serves food at night and a buffet in the morning almost every day. The state of the restaurant has a fancy feel to it on the inside; however, the outside leaves a lot to be deserved. The service was acceptable. The waitresses and waiters were waiting to serve and standing by. They were clumped together in a certain spot, so it made it hard to get a server at certain times. We were served water pretty quickly. However, I was not able to get the server's attention when we were ready to order food. This translated to after as well. We were done with our food and had to wait a bit to get a server to get us our checks and also some to-go boxes. The server was pretty good at refilling our water bottles and everything. The food was pretty good. For the price and the amount, I got a lot of food for not much money. The chicken biryani plate that I got was 13.99 and it took me a few days to finish it off. The spice was there when I asked for it, too! There was a lot of chicken and a lot of rice. Additionally, the sauces help take away the monotony of the dish as it adds more flavor through more spice or through a creamy sauce. The rice was cooked kinda dry. However, the additions in the rice plate was a little bit excessive. I would bite into a piece of one of the spices, and it would overpower the taste of the rice and chicken. I think that this can be an issue, and the thing that I bit into was not a pleasant texture and taste either. I only took away one star for this restaurant as the taste of the food could be better and the service could be a little bit better as well. read more

Service was fantastic, they were so sweet to my messy toddler. This is a rather large space that is simply decorated with lots of seating and some natural lighting. The food is delectable! They have the standard Indian offerings but they also have a small section of South Indian dishes. I absolutely love everything that was at the table. I ordered the masala dosa so of course that was my favorite. But the kids meal and my partners chicken tikka masala was quite tasty. If I lived here I would frequent this spot. read more

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. The music really transported me out of Baton Rouge and over to Asia. The vegetable thali was a sampling of some wonderful dishes and included rice pudding for dessert! The portions have always been huge and shareable. I enjoyed watching my daughter expand her palate. A friend and I spent a pleasant 2-hour lunch enjoying having a taste of many dishes from the buffet. Delicious and so many different tastes! My vegetarian friend found quite a few non-meat choices. The staff were all very pleasant and efficient. I thought I would be at a disadvantage since the buffet items were not identified with "name tags," but a member of the staff came and explained what each dish contained. We will very definitely return as it was a quiet place to enjoy conversation and an unhurried meal. I recommend this restaurant highly, and I will definitely return! read more

I am no stranger to to India's restaurant! We used to eat dinner here frequently- and the vindaloo and Rohan Josh were family favorites for us. Stopped in for a solo lunch recently and really enjoyed the buffet. Previously I usually ordered off the menu. I found the lunch buffet had plenty of choices- vegetarian and meat dishes. The naan was good and hot- though you won't find my favorite- garlic naan on the buffet. I noted that they had a goat dish on the buffet! I do not eat goat because I have them as pets and love them too much. The buffet was well stocked and serviced. All the chafing dishes were kept full. Service was good as usual. Only con here that this is not a cheap lunch. The buffet for one and an iced tea totaled with a modest tip to $23.00. Worth it for a special splurge but not an everyday lunch price for my budget. read more

I had stopped going here about 11 years ago because it had become dingy and the staff seemed tired and irritable. I remember the Mayer of dust in the drapes was appalling. I stopped in again, albeit anxiously, and absolutely was surprised. It was clean, fresh, and inviting. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and attentive. I have lived in Baton Rouge for years and have never had Indian food here until about a week ago. I was craving Indian food and found India's on Uber Eats. I was very impressed. I just ordered lunch from here for the second time this week. Both times, ordering was easy, the menu was extensive, and the preparation and delivery were quick. The Chicken Tikka Masala was great, it was creamy and tangy with just the right amount of heat. I also got the medium Chicken Curry, and it could have been a bit spicier but the flavor was right what you want from a curry. The Veggie Samosas were crisp and filled with stuffing--I only with I had ordered more! The garlic naan was also a standout. Honestly it was just ok. It was relatively packed on a Sunday and my boyfriend and I had gotten the buffet. The rice wasn't to my liking and I was not a fan of how the seating was inside. I felt like all the food was pretty bland and I was not a fan. I don't like heavy spice but I do like flavor and this lacked flavor. It just wasn't worth the price honestly. If this review were just for the food I would give India's 5 stars. However, the service/atmosphere is always super uncomfortable!!! It is so evident that the servers are petrified of the manager (this one lady who just walks around and tells the 1 or 2 servers what to do/how to do it/and when). There is no music and they seat you literally inches away from the other occupied tables (even when the restaurant is nearly empty). You know it's bad when customers can EASILY notice the negative work dynamics. You can also tell it is miserable to work there because every time we come there are new servers...and we frequent this place because the food is actually phenomenal. It is unfortunate that the atmosphere of this restaurant fails so monumentally because the food is actually pretty great. I always get the chicken tikka masala and my husband gets either the chili chicken or the mixed grill plate. We haven't been back since that article came out and this restaurant was in the top 10 for health violations . Maybe one day we will be back, but not for a while. read more

Unfortunately that's not the case anymore we came for lunch today and I honestly couldn't eat anything. The food actually had a old dirty taste I thought I'd be sick. I can't compare this to other Indian restaurants, or tell you if it's authentic, but it is very good. It is at least what I expected- full of flavor and spices. The chicken curry was just perfectly spiced with a nice kick of chilies, but not blistering hot. Same with tandoori wings. Very good. The hot pickle and tomato chutney was hot, too, and perfect with a bite of naan. The chicken tiki masala was perfect as well - mild and creamy and full of flavor. I didn't try it, but my son says the yogurt-rice pudding is a perfectly seasoned, palate cleansing finish. He only wishes they had bigger bowls :) Although we had the buffet, the service was still good - water glasses were never mote than half empty. The location is not convenient to my normal travel paths, but I'll go out of my way to try this again. read more

Yummy!! I love Indian food so we ordered from India's for takeout. We had never had it before so we tried a few items. Biryani: honestly disappointed. It wasn't bad, but it was EXTREMELY salty and a lot more liquidy than any biryani I've had before. Biryani is one of my favorite things to order so I've had a ton and usually it's more dry, with a ton of spice and flavor. This wasn't bad, but atypical and I'd prefer the typical. My wife and I had dinner at India's Saturday evening Jan 6, 2024. We have eaten there before on a Saturday evening, and every time it has been nearly deserted, despite their excellent food. They did, however, have a lively take-out business going, so perhaps they get most of their dine-in business during the week, from the nearby hospitals. As always, India's food was excellent, but the place was freezing. The outside temperature was in the 40s, so we asked them to turn the heat up, but they only turned off the blowers. Have you every tried to eat a hot dinner inside an igloo? Go to India's on a cold night, and you will find out. The ambiance ruined what should have been an excellent dining experience. read more

We have given them personal catering business and has been flawless. Last night they catered for 500 people at Crowne Plaza for an upscale Lavish Indian reception. They have botched up the game in Baton Rouge. My family and I have been faithful customers of India's since the mid-1990s, having enjoyed numerous meals on various special occasions like birthdays, Diwali, and New Years.  My motto: There are restaurants, and then there's India's. Until recently, I have never had a bad meal or experienced subpar service.  India's consistently delivered an amazing experience, even during the pandemic.  Their stellar record now has a blemish.   I went to India's for lunch on 5/18/21.  I had been craving Indian food, and I had the day off, so I figured why not?  I arrived around 11:30, the start of their lunch rush. There were 3 other customers in the restaurant, one arriving just after me.  In addition, there were two new wait staff, both of whom were friendly and courteous.   The hostess this particular day was a veteran employee.  Though not terribly friendly (her personal style is best described as overly rehearsed - - if you get my meaning), she is mostly competent.   The hostess showed me to my table, and a few minutes later she returned and took my order: a Taj Mahal beer and the lamb vindaloo with Kashmiri naan instead.  To ensure accuracy, the hostess repeated my order. The wait time took a little longer than usual, though I didn't think anything of it.  Finally, I heard the hostess calling loudly, "LAMB VINDALOO! #31!" - a message to the wait staff that my entrée was ready. As I started eating, I noticed that they'd given me plain naan. When I pointed this out, the waitress apologized and told me that the Kashmiri naan would be out in a few minutes.  The lamb vindaloo, which is usually spicy, had no flavor whatsoever.  The cook usually includes one or two small potato wedges, perhaps to soak up excess spice, but this dish was mostly potato. I inspected the chunks which were under the signature red gravy, gently smashing each with my fork: there were two small pieces of lamb, roughly the size of half dollars, the rest was potatoes. I am not the type to complain about food, so when I do speak up, it's always because there's something terribly wrong with the food (e.g.: hair in the food, wrong entrée, etc.).  When I got the hostess's attention, I asked her: "Is this lamb vindaloo? There doesn't seem to be any lamb in it." Her response: "Yes, Sir, this is lamb vindaloo, I assure you."  Pausing before I responded, I looked at my entrée and again at the hostess, saying, "This dish is mostly potatoes." The hostess responded, "It is lamb vindaloo." I looked at her a few second more and sighed, "Ok..." and then returned to my meal.  Either she didn't care or I was just not clear. Regardless, I finished my meal because I was very hungry.  Oh, and the Kashmiri naan arrived when I was more than half way done eating. Better late than never, I suppose.  I paid $33.00 (this included a $5.00 tip) for a meal that should not have cost more than $15.00. Though the hostess assured me that I had been served lamb vindaloo, I was actually given a vegetarian dish that had two small pieces of lamb. What's more, I wrote a brief note on the back of the bill in which I expressed my disappointment. I even left my phone number. I showed the note to my waitress and asked that she make sure that their manager saw it.  It's been nearly a week and not one person from India's has reached out to me.  Very, very disappointing. I do not fault my waitress. I fault the hostess.  She knew there was a problem, but she just didn't care.  I've shared this experience with the rest of my family, and the friends who frequent India's. The feedback I got from them is really sad: "India's has been going downhill for some time." Very, very sad. I will not be returning any time soon, neither will the rest of my family.  As an epilogue, I was still hungry when I left India's, so I went next door to Piccadilly. It's a sad day when you can say that the food at Piccadilly is better than food from India's. read more

My boyfriend has made me chicken curry a dozen times and it's one of my favorite dishes. However, I've never had authentic Indian food before. The chicken curry surpassed my expectations. My favorite Indian restaurant in town was closed for renovations so I thought I would try this restaurant again for the lunch buffet. The first time I came here was in 2016 when I brought friends to try Indian food for the first time. I was underwhelmed to say the least. However this past time with my girlfriend was a solid experience. There was a vast selection of meat options (for you carnivores), but also a vast selection of vegetarian options (herbivores). They have a giant venue capable of holding big events and a well stocked bar. Lots of parking. The service was fast, and they were constantly bringing food to replenish the buffet. The food was spicy, just how I like it! But those who can't deal with it, beware. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is that the meat could have been seasoned longer, specifically the goat. But otherwise good experience and I would recommend! Will be back again! Have you ever seen Robert Irvine GUT out a complete place and change stuff around in 'Restaurant impossible' ?? Have you seen his sinewy muscles flex as he picks up a big hammer and smashes down a wall at a dodgy moldy looking restaurant? Have you ever heard his oh-so-cute accent.. sigh..! Oh well, I digress from my review.. the point here is - this place is the PERFECT place for that show.. they desperately need help! The moment you walk into this place, an unpleasant smell hits you, the place looks like it hasnt been cleaned in over a year, the servers/ owners look like they have given up on the place, they try to make up for lost profits by charging you extra for every modification they make to your meal.. the list is ENDLESS! He needs to come fix this place.. seriously.. But then you would ask, WHY do I give the place an 'A-OK' aka 3 stars? Well - the answer is simple.. I feel the food is decent and their heart is in the right place. I ordered to-go on the phone, the lady I spoke to did not speak English very well and it took my a good 10 minutes to get my order right. Now I am Indian myself, so I did try to speak to her in Hindi too, but turns out that was alien to her as well :( All she spoke was Telgu, and I am far removed from that! So, I walked in after about 20 minutes, to this musty smelling place, I am silently thanking my stars I am not here for a sit down dinner! (At the same time, I shudder to think of what the kitchen would look like) Anyways, I had to wait an additional 10 minutes for my food. The food is by no means cheap btw, compared to a lot of other Indian places, they are up on almost every dish by $2-$3.00. Also, they charge you extra for everything, including pickle - which would be considered pretty blasphemous, had you been in India.. but then again, this isn't India! Now for the food, I took my food home, happy to see the appetizer, my samosa, was still piping hot. The samosa itself was ok tasting, the skin had tonnes of blisters though - because they did not heat the oil to the right temperature when frying the samosa (yes, I am an Indian Food snob - when you grow up in India, watching your mom cook for you, these are the little things you learn right off the bat!) The accompanying chutneys were pretty tasty, I must say. I was able to eat only one samosa that day, had the next one the next day, and it still tasted yummy- and oh, they had PEAS in their samosas, which I absolutely love! Traditional samosas always have peas! I had the Daal tadka, which was pretty decent again, a bit TOO spicy for me (very typical of food from Hyderabad, which is where the owners are from), but it threw me off. Now for the bread, I asked for Tawa bread (made on a skillet, instead of the oven), which is easier to do, healthier and much more homey and yummier). Let me say that NOT many Indian restaurants in the US will do that for you. However, these people did! I cannot say it was the best I had, it was a bit too thick and doughy for me, but they did it, which was awesome! The pickle I asked for as a side was yummy and hot (yes, I DO like hot pickle), the raita (yogurt) was ok, a bit too liquid-y for my taste. Why have a sandwich when I can experience a delicious hot Indian lunch buffet for the same price of one entrée! There lunch buffet from 11-2pm is an excellent spot if you are new to exploring Indian cuisine and want to sample an array of rich, cleverly spiced dishes that bring out the authentic Indian taste. They have plenty of vegetarian options but my favorite however is the chicken tandoori drumettes. The meat marinated in a yogurt and spice mixture that gives a red hue and explodes your taste buds. There service is very prompt which is great ease of mind on Essen Lane during the lunch traffic rush. :) read more
