The butter chicken was enjoyable, especially the tender chicken pieces, though the sauce carried a noticeable canned tomato aroma. The rice was perfectly cooked. Service varied--the gentleman who assisted me was friendly, while the woman at the register was not. The garlic naan looked appealing but lacked garlic flavor. The portion size was reasonable for the price. Overall, the meal was good, and I would return to this convenience‑store restaurant when I'm in the area. read more

I will go back and order off the menu. My buffet experience was not great. It felt undercooked and actually was, dangerously undercooked. Even the naan tasted squishy and Straight up raw chicken. I tried a few other things before I got to the raw Tandoori chicken and they were ok. read more

I have been wanting to go here and finally did. I went with the buffet rather than the menu and am glad I did. I ate a little bit of everything they had on the buffet and then went a second round and did the same thing. It was all so delicious. Different textures too. I'd have never tried some of this area regular restaurant. Glad I did. I was so elated when we left from all the great Indian food. It is in an old gas station so sort of like a hole in the wall. But very good. read more

Yes this is a gas station. But it's good Indian food for being a gas station. And even good. If it was a sit down restaurant, which it kind of is. Service was good, water was refilled always. The naan was continually being made fresh and brought out. The food area was clean. It is a gas station, so the decor and ambiance are less than glamorous. But we all enjoyed the butter chicken, peas dish, and the curry. The tandoori chicken was a little dry and used different seasonings than we were used to. But we enjoyed this place and will go again. read more

DO NOT ORDER TAKE OUT FROM HERE!!!!!!!!! The first time I attempted it, they were so incredibly rude to me that I gave up. The second time (today) I scheduled an order 6 HOURS IN ADVANCE, and was delivered COMPLETELY wrong items. I was missing FIVE items!!! I have never wrote a review on yelp before. But this was the second time ordering from this restaurant. The first time I got the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. And this time I got the butter chicken with the bread basket. And wow, both times I received a meal in which the curry had no flavor and was watered down.....bland. The chicken both times tasted like it was two days old. It had an off taste. Not to mention incredibly dry. Which is an accomplishment, because it's in a sauce?? How is it dry?? And lastly, the naan tastes like it was store bought. Considering how many high rating this has, I expected something with flavor, and something that I wouldn't have to worry about getting food poisoning from. From other reviews, it seems this place once had amazing food, but the old chef left, and so did everything pleasant about this place. It's quite sad, but I guess I might just be the fool for expecting something from a restaurant inside of a gas station. Until this changes, I will tell everyone not to eat here, nor will I eat here. Which is sad because this is the only Indian restaurant that is close. And I love Indian food, but this isn't Indian food, it's not even food. Do not order here! read more

It's over. New chef. No Indian flavors. No butter in the butter chicken. No flavor in tandoori. No spice in the saag. It's a sad day in Hammond. It's the third time this happened. New chefs! Lots of old great memories. We will not be back. Very sad. read more

After my previous good experience with this establishment and my takeout food, I wanted to go back and actually sit down for the buffet. I wasn't disappointed. Yes, it's inside a gas station, but the food here is fresh, delicious, and authentic. Additionally, the buffet is very reasonably priced so you won't leave hungry. Louisiana gas stations are on another level. I got a very basic Indian food order since it was my first time there, and I wasn't disappointed at all! The butter chicken was velvety, though I didn't like the chicken itself. The star was the vegetable biryani. Good prices, good portions. Gas station vibes, and the service was quick. I suspect the morning buffet is fantastic. read more

Good food, do not judge it by building as it was a former gas station, but other than that great food, will definitely come back!

This is the greatest food I have ever had in my life. I do not care it is in a closed down gas station, this is worth the drive from anywhere you are from because it is so good. We came here for the ren fest and went here both nights because the food was so good the first time it was pointless to go anywhere else. I will be a fan of Punjabi Dhaba until I am dead in the ground. This is seriously amazing, keep up the good work! read more

Ambiance: 0 (you enter through a gas station). But we're okay with that if the food is good, which friends told us it would be. Service: polite and friendly. 5 star for the food. We're happy to see a dhaba on the highway and that too with authentic food. Properitor is a great guy. Entertains guests well and more than everything serves great food. This was a pit stop for us on the way and back from Florida and we ordered a la carte the first time and enjoyed the sumptuous buffet the next time around. I know that it's a truck joint but the owners know that they attract all sorts of crowds. Toilets could have been cleaner..not that truckers don't deserve nice clean toilets but being a dhaba shouldn't be a justification for unclean toilets Anothe selfish feedback: add desi tea to the menu for the whole duration of the day. I've only been here a couple times, but every time I have been amazed and impressed. How did Hammond get a place like this? Finding more-or-less authentic Hispanic food isn't so surprising these days, but Indian food? That's a whole different story. Punjabi Dhaba is a full service restaurant and buffet operating out of a gas station. I tried the buffet pre-pandemic and thought it was a great idea: a way to try lots of new foods at once. They stopped offering the buffet for a couple months during the pandemic, but have made it available again. When I was there around 11:30am on a Saturday picking up a to-go order, they had no dine-in customers. I don't know how feasible a buffet is in current times, but I hope they're getting enough revenue through takeout orders and other means that they'll still be around when the pandemic is over. Speaking of the pandemic, they definitely deserve a shout out for their pandemic work. On multiple occasions during the pandemic, Punjabi Dhaba offered free meals to the community. Anyway, getting back to the food. This time I got naan, chicken biryani, and gajar halwa. They have several naan options available but I opted for the plain naan, which was still quite good. The biryani didn't have a whole lot of chicken, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be. Don't get this biryani thinking that since it's a rice dish it won't be spicy, because you'll be wrong! I quite enjoyed the heat though. And I've had literal dreams about the gajar halwa (carrot "pudding"). I've come close to replicating it but I've never gotten it just right, plus it's too much work for a lazy cook like me, so I'll just stick to ordering it here. read more

I was staying nearby and this came as such a wonderful and unexpected recommendation from a friend who's eaten her way across the south and just published a book on gas station eateries. This is the place to go if you want a flavor filled authentic Punjabi food! With the buffet variety that is available between 11am-2pm when we went, there were three to four chefs making the food where the naan was very soft and so tasty, the butter chicken out of this world, the gulab jamun so sweet and the carrot halwa really sumptuous! The peas pulao was basmati and so very nicely done without any reheat that would made the rice grains hard! And to top it all the great ambience!!!! The owner has one of the nicest smiles and I am so glad that this establishment will be having a new location just on the other side of the road beginning next month!! read more

You need to eat here. That's an order. A few years ago I stopped here for gas. I saw the signs advertising the Indian restaurant and couldn't imagine eating Indian food at a gas station in Hammond. But now that I have, I can't imagine not eating Indian food at a gas station in Hammond. Outside it's a regular gas station with a reasonable amount of pumps dispensing Shell gasoline. Prices aren't outrageous and my pump had the clicker device that lets you fuel up without holding the pump. I am far to important to hold pump handles. Inside there is a wall of beverages like most gas stations. But there is also a full service Indian restaurant, and from 11-3 on weekdays, a buffet. The buffet is $11.99 and that is what I tried today. It was pretty damn delicious. There were about 10 different items on the buffet. I tried about five or six. All were very good, but I will focus on the items you really need to try. Tandoori chicken - holy hell man. Where has this chicken been all my life? While not necessarily bbq chicken, these thighs were cooked in a tandoori and coated in some deliciousness that made them appear slightly red like bbq chicken. But the taste was so different and rich that after tasting it I shook my head in disbelief. Yeah. It's that good. Chicken Tiki Masala - This is a pretty standard Indian dish, but this version was far from standard. It was thick, rich, and the chicken was so tender. If you only try one dish, try this one. Goat Curry - it's goat and it's curry. This is the dish you should try even if you don't want to. It's not as weird as it sounds. The goat is less tender than the chicken but the curry is thick and rich just like the tiki masala. You'll be spooning it up. Now that you've read this far, what are you waiting on? You've been given a direct order. Get yourself here now. read more

Yep, this is an Indian restaurant in a gas station in Hammond, Louisiana. And if I'm being honest, it isn't that great of a gas station; the price was higher than the neighboring stations and the machine at the pump was a little dodgy and worn. But damn if that wasn't the best Indian food I've had in Louisiana. It's may be the only vegetarian-friendly restaurant in the greater Hammond-Ponchatoula area, but vegetarian does not mean it won't be satisfying. To the locals who don't know anything about Indian food, trust me, they're really good at frying stuff. Take my appetizer, which turned out to be a small entree, with two fried puffed up breads and a chickpea curry I asked for spicy which had visible flecks of fresh green chilis throughout. Fantastic. And I ordered okra, a plant many people associate with the Southern U.S. but which is popular at comparable latitudes in India. It was a very tasty-if oily-stir fry with onions and tomatoes, and the accompanying rice had a few cumin seeds mixed in. I also got a free papadum as an appetizer (a lentil-based cracker). I could not finish it all. The ambiance is about what you'd expect out of a gas station, with the addition of some Punjabi hip hop being streamed on a TV, but for what I spent, the food was totally worth it. Notably, they have a lunch buffet from 11-3 that probably makes more sense for anyone who really is just stopping to get gas. Better than any other gas station food you're ever likely to have. read more

Amazing food for on the road people. It's a nice spot in close proximity to major highways. Located inside the gas station. The owner is really nice and always around. The service is great. First off, WOW! I tried this place recently and I am still dreaming about it. I've been living in louisiana 5 years now and this is HANDS DOWN the BEST Indian food I've had. (And trust me when I say I've tried every Indian restaurant in La! From Houma to New Orleans to Hammond just searching for something that comes remotely close to authentic/flavorful Indian cuisine). This food wasn't overpowered by cumin like most places I've tried seem to be. This chef knows what their doing! They have the ratio of flavors perfected. It literally tastes like the chef is getting the food straight from India. The meat is cooked so tender it literally melts in your mouth. The curry and seasonings are done to PERFECTION, like a science. I literally had to stop myself from drinking the curry at the end. Gordon Ramsay needs to come here and put these guys on the map! It's that good! Even the Naan was so fluffy and tasty. Not to mention the ownership - such a welcoming and incredible staff! Such good hearted and humble guys! This place didn't stop filling with customers the entire time I was there. Do yourself a favor and try it out! You won't regret it! I'm so excited that I finally have a place here to get some authentic Indian food! My mother came to visit and even she approved, that's saying a lot bc her standards are next level lol. Oh and you guys - they use ghee! Forget that basic butter, they use ghee! And you taste the difference I mean, DROOL. Make sure you keep watch on this place so you can follow if they expand to a bigger location! read more

Wao. I was looking for some indian food for my birthday that was a week after we moved to hammond. I was expecting to find one but little i know that one of the best ranked restaurants here was an Indian one and oh surprise...inside a gas station. I looked up the reviews and saw a lot of people saying is the best indian food in Louisiana and even tho im not expert i can tell that its amazing. A m a z i n g. So fresh, so rich, the flavors are delicious, again so fresh,so well cooked. They package the food the best way possible, so it makes it even better cause you know there is attention and they care. We had the chicken and goat curry the first time, cheese naan and samosas. I cannot explain the samosas, big, cruchy, full of the filling and delicious sweet and sour sauce and a mint sauce that its also great. The naan was delicious. The curry so so so good, we ordered medium spicy and it was really ok. The portions are good, not a lot of protein but thats fine cause its a curry, not a chicken. The goat was amazing. Good portion of rice and the naan is enough for more than 2 people. Great price. Second visit Lord. Please. Wao. The tikka chicken, so so so so creamy, delicious, perfect,FRESH. I was out of myself. We ordered garlic naan and was great ..again. We called and it was ready around 25 mins after. We ordered indian spicy and it wasnt bad , not too spicy. Whatever i dunno what else to say. We are planning on taste everything and really...really...come to hammond to taste this..its worth it read more
