Two other Indian restaurants I tried Dal Makhani here, it wasn't even close (pale & bland) and a waste for me. So I'm enjoying it at Bay Leaf. I also had Chicken 65 which used to be my favorite at Bay Leaf they use chicken breast.. spicy but lacking the layer of sautéed veg of onions & bellpeppers under the spicy chicken (and smaller serving size) but when I asked, they graciously cooked onions & peppers. The ambiance is very laid back, it's a mix between business casual and some people just dressed causal! Very welcoming! The service here tends to be on the slower side at time! Maybe they are short staffed cause there seems to be a server usually and some help from what look like the managers. Honestly the food is worth the wait though! I used to love this place. They're too expensive and the food is not cooked with love. I got lectured for ordering online on their website. I didn't know they didn't like that. Good place to meet friends for dinner in Baton Rouge on the way home from New Orleans. The food was really good, fresh and hot. Nice to grab a selection of veg and non-veg entrees. The masala chai tea was perfect for a chilly spring day. Sag Paneer is always one of our favorites and this one did not disappoint. Baby spinach with large cubes of homemade paneer cheese sautéed with creamy curry sauce. So yummy especially with the onion kulcha. The Chicken Tikka Masala, with chunks of chicken breast marinated in a yogurt sauce, baked in a tandoor and then curried in a creamy tomato base masala "mixture of spices" sauce, was so tender. So delicious. The Aloo Gobi Peas were also good and a bit spicy. Lots of potatoes, cauliflower and green peas cooked in a tomato and onion base sauce. The Lamb Pasanda was the least favorite of our entrees although the sauce was good. The lamb is marinated in cashmere spices, prepared with saffron and an almond sauce. Would not order this one again. We also ordered both the onion kulcha, whole wheat bread stuffed with finely chopped onions and spices, and the paneer kulcha, whole wheat bread stuffed with goat cheese, raisins and green herbs. Unfortunately, they brought out two orders of onion kulcha, because they could not tell the difference between the baskets of kulcha. Nice place for traditional Indian food in Baton Rouge. read more

Our server was helpful with giving recommendations and explaining the different dishes. I had the Poori with Potato Curry and it was SO GOOD. It wasn't heavy at all but super filling. My wife and I drove to Baton Rouge last weekend to spend some time with our oldest child. I suggested that we do lunch, and started a search for places that were relatively close to where they live. Since Baton Rouge is pretty much all uncharted territory for me, I had to rely on Yelp reviews to steer us towards something good ... and Bay Leaf Indian Cuisine did not disappoint! The staff were very pleasant a cordial, showing us to our seat. The restaurant itself is spacious and decorated very nice. It's an inviting space and quite comfortable. Once we were seated, I started to look over their very extensive menu. There was also a separate specials menu and a drinks menu. They have a full bar, so lots of libations to choose from. I ordered an Indian lager. My wife and oldest ordered glasses of Mumm Napa Brut, sparkling wine. We were quite hungry, having all skipped breakfast, so we decided to get the appetizer assortment for the table. The app selection was pescatarian friendly, with a few seafood items and the rest all vegetarian based. This was a great choice, so many tasty morsels to try. These came with mint and tamarind chutneys, but we also ordered some mango chutney too. Yum. The food at Bay Leaf Indian Cuisine was sumptuous and presented quite nicely. For entrees, we ordered the Lobster Masala, Tandoori Shrimp, Shrimp Bagare, and an order of Saag Paneer. We also ordered some plain naan and roti, because bread is awesome. When the entrees started arriving, we were all impressed with the presentation. The lobster dish was beautifully laid out and garnished. The shrimp bagare curry and the saag were in traditional metal dishes, and the tandoori shrimp sizzled. With the two baskets of bread, we had quite the spread! Our water glasses were kept full of icy cold water, a must in the record heat of this summer. The gentleman on "ice water" duty was kept busy by the many patrons who were all happily enjoying their meals. The food here is quite good, spiced well, and as I mentioned, presented well. The atmosphere is really nice. You can come here casual and dressed up. 8 love the decor. I even liked the handles for the front door. The food is amaze-balls. I got the Spring Dosa which was so delicious and chock full of flavor! Spring Dosa is described as "Dosa crepe stuffed with seasoned spring onions, onions, carrots and cauliflower." I will say there is no heat to this so the normal mouth dying from too much spice at an Indian restaurant was not an issue. We feel like they are inattentive, even with maybe two or three tables tops, occupied in the whole restaurant, so this is unacceptable for me. (I used to wait on tables for 5-7 years back in college and we would have been fired, if this was how we were with our tables and customers.) We had to ask for water refills each time. They checked on us one time the whole visit. *Third, the time it takes to get your food, whether you're dining in or ordering takeout, is by far the most ridiculous ever. It never fails, you are looking at an hour before you get your food. It is probably my biggest complaint. I am convinced they literally go shopping for ingredients to make your meal, once placed. Then make it from scratch. LoL no lie, it takes that long. Takeout even says, on this Yelp app/listing, the average wait is 20-30min for your food to be ready. Nope. Nope it's not. It's an hour. So plan accordingly if you want their food. Prepare to WAIT, either way. If I was reviewing the food, I'd give 5 stars bc it's just so good. Went for lunch on a weekday, everything we had was delicious (& I'm Indian so I think I have pretty high standards). We ordered off the menu specials of the day, so has the samosa chaat and the chicken appetizer and chicken entrees. I can't remember the exact dishes but everything was hot, fresh, & tasty. Appreciate that the staff remained distanced when able, spaced us apart (there were only about 3 parties while I was there, along with a few people who picked up take out), and obviously that they kept their masks on the entire time. Went here on a Monday evening with my parents to celebrate finishing a big test and it was perfect for that. The atmosphere is calm without any cheesy Indian music that we've been hearing since the age of 2. They had nice melodies playing that made a relaxing environment. We were seated promptly and never lacked for water or service. We ordered paneer tikka for appetizer and although it took a while to come, it was delicious. It was served with a mint/ coriander chutney that I hope to replicate in my own kitchen'! The entrees came very quickly after the appetizer and were equally delicious. The korma was rich and creamy with plenty of vegetables and the daal had the right about of garlic and spice to it The reason it's getting a four and not five star review is due to the time it took for the appetizer to come out.
