I had 2 great meals at India Hut during my trip to Indianapolis. Both times I came with coworkers, and we were all welcomed warmly by Joe and his wife Aarti, who own the restaurant. You can tell Joe is a very proud chef, and with good reason! He told us that he even grows the chilis he uses to flavor the dishes in his own garden! I tried the vegetable samosas, which were addictive, chicken korma, chicken curry, and naan. All were delicious! We have been regularly eating at this location when it was Indian Garden and now with the new owners, as India Hut. The interior was all remodeled with new floors, tables, dinnerware and is a great upgrade. The food suffered at the onset but has returned to high quality delicious. I love the Hut Special starter as there is something for everyone. The mango lassies are so yummy, my daughter sometimes fills up on them before her dinner gets there. I crave the palak paneer, the Tika masala are my mom's favorite. This is a local family run business and you'll find cartoons on the TV. Amazing lunch here today! This is a weird week after a mid-week holiday, so I guess that is why we were the only table in the restaurant. When we arrived no one was there to greet us; we found the owner by popping our head in the kitchen. He was super nice and explained he was short staffed today but led us to a table and got waters for us. We were 2 adults, one teen, and one kid who eats very little. We ordered 4 breads... garlic naan, house special paratha, aloo paratha, and keema paratha. These were all so fresh and flavorful, and great portion sizes especially on the stuffed ones for the price! You could make a meal of these alone. We ordered tikka masala, rice, and the owner suggested coconut curry which wasn't listed on our menus but was excellent. The tikka masala was rich and buttery and perfect. When we entered this quaint little restaurant, I did need to call out a couple of times, but they came right out after the second time. I just assumed they were busy in the back despite the restaurant itself not being busy. They were probably working on carry out orders. We were told we could seat ourselves and we picked a table near the front windows. They had decorations on the walls and the ceiling and the tables were cleanly decorated and had silverware neatly wrapped up in cloth napkins. There was a little bit of traditional Indian music as well as other music done by cover bands that played softly in the background. There was also a television that appeared to be playing an Indian comedy sitcom with the captions on for translation. My wife ordered a mango lassi made with mangoes, yogurt, and milk. I just stuck with water to drink. We started off with an order of chicken pakora and garlic naan. I also had a spicy lentil soup. The chicken pakora is delicately spiced and deep fried chicken fritters. They were served with a slightly sweet and spicy tamarind dipping sauce as well as a light and savory curry dipping sauce. We enjoyed these greatly! They weren't caked in a thick coating, they were lightly crispy and not at all oily or greasy. The garlic naan was nice and warm and just the right amount of garlic and herbs; they went well with the rest of our meal. The spicy lentil soup was a little different for me. I'm used to the black bean lentil soup, but this was more of a yellow lentil soup, probably the preparation and the spices. It was deliciously spicy, but not too much. It was nice and hot and perfect for the cool evening. I ate every bite. My wife enjoyed her mango lassi, I tried a taste of it. Sweet mangoes with the tanginess of yogurt and creaminess of milk, it was nice, light, and fruity. If you get a spicy dish, this will certainly cool off your tongue and mouth. For our entrees, my wife had the chicken tikka masala and I had the shrimp biryani. My wife's favorite Indian dish is chicken tikka masala and this was no exception! The sauce had just the right amount of spice and creaminess with chicken that was tender and juicy. It came with basmati rice that was perfectly cooked and perfectly complemented the rest of the dish. My shrimp biryani was long grain basmati rice cooked with shrimp, saffron and spices. It had a hard boiled egg split open with some light spices on it sitting on top, but off to the side of it. It had a few pine nuts mixed within it as well. I loved the egg, it was perfectly cooked and tasted fresh. The basmati rice with the saffron and spices had a nice flavor. I was surprised the shrimp turned out to be salad shrimp, which is smaller pieces, but it worked well with this dish and the pine nuts helped add a nice and light nutty texture to it that I liked very much. Neither one of us were able to finish, so we took what was left of our food home in to-go boxes. While we ate, the server was very friendly and attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. At one point, the lights changed slightly and there were twinkling lights above us. It sort of added to the ambiance of the place. I went to the bathroom before we left. There was just a single gender neutral single-seater bathroom. It was very clean and roomy. Before we left, the owner came out to talk to us thinking I was someone he knew, but I wasn't since this was my first time there. He was very friendly as well and expressed his frustration in having the business be so slow. It seems a shame that their business is so slow, this is really a kind of hidden gem that really should not be missed. If you're vegetarian or even vegan, they've got plenty of options to choose from. I will definitely return! read more

What was a random day lunch date with a friend turned into one of the best experiences! I am so happy we stopped here to eat out of all the restaurants in broad ripple. We walked into a quiet restaurant where it was just the two of us. The owner greeted us and let us look over the menu before we ultimately decided to sit. My friend and I both love Indian food, but listening to the owner tell us about the food they cook here was awesome. He was passionate and informative. Not only that, he cooked our meals himself. EVERYTHING. WAS. DELICIOUS. I have thought about this meal since that day, but have not been able to make it back yet cause I have not been in the area...but as soon as I am, I am stopping in there again. read more

Admittedly I'm one of *those* people who orders the national dish of the UK when getting Indian food. What can I say? I love that slightly sweet, orange colored tikka sauce full of aromatic spices and cream. India Hut has a delightful Chicken Tikka Masala and I find myself craving their takeout quite often. The chicken tikka and other entrees come with Basmati rice (perfectly cooked, never sticky) and I always go with an order of garlic naan which is the best vehicle for sopping up all that extra sauce. I also ordered the vegetable samosas. They were crispy and the filling of potatoes and peas has a nice warm spicy kick that builds bite after bite. They're served with a sweet tamarind sauce and a cool herbaceous green sauce (which I assume is a cilantro chutney). I have only had experience with their takeout, but my orders have always been accurate, packaged well, and hot upon arrival! I will have to dine in soon and give some other dishes a try! read more

My spouse and I had an early dinner on a late Tuesday afternoon at this Indian restaurant in Broad Ripple. It operates in the space formerly occupied for many years by the India Garden restaurant. Its decor is semi-formal, open and inviting. I liked especially the number of round tables in the space that promote ease of conversation for couples as well as can comfortably accommodate four in a party. There are also several long tables too for multiple guests. We were not disappointed with the cuisine! We first ordered as an appetizer the Vegetarian Platter that came with Vegetable Samosas, Vegetable Pakoras and Panir Pakoras (homemade cheese dipped in chickpea batter and fried). It was accompanied by three separate and delicious homemade chutneys which greatly enhanced the taste of the appetizers. It was delicious! My spouse ordered the Chicken Palak while I opted for the Matar Paneer. The entrees came with a generous bowl of fluffy basmati rice and we coupled our order with some plain Naan to complete the meal. The owner and chef, Dawinder (who also goes by "Joe"), served us and provided interesting information behind the cooking with his conscientious attention to detail and the use of all-natural ingredients. Our overall experience was excellent and we would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting great Indian cuisine. Simply delicious! read more

Not sure how it could have been any better. We were greater warmly right away. The dishes were explained to us and recommendations made. We had the goat curry and chicken tandoori all was amazing. Despite saying it would take 20 minutes for the chicken the food felt so s though it came out faster than other restaurants. Nice clean interior. Absolutely will eat here again. read more

Lovely Indian restaurant with a gracious owner! I called to get a takeout order one evening, as I've heard great things about it. The owner was super kind on the phone as I had asked about his favorite vegetarian dishes. He described several of them to me in detail, and at his recommendation I ordered tarka dal, along with an order of chapati bread, raita, chutneys and hot pickles. It was ready in 20 mins for pick up and there were a number of people in and out also, picking up their takeout orders. The dining area is very clean and bright! My total was just over $20 pre-tip. I think is a steal in BR; I had enough food to make two meals! I was very happy to try the dal dish, it was spiced perfectly and quite filling. The raita and chutneys were a nice start to the meal accompanied by the chapati. Basmati rice was fluffy and tender. I wanted Indian food, my daughter only likes one place. But I talked her in to trying this place . It's a 10/10 even my kid agreed! We got the vegetarian platter app. 2 of the 3 things was new to me and so good the seasoning was spot on. She got tikka she always does she said it was good. The food is great, as is the service and the family that's owned India Hut for about 3 years. A friend and I, who often met for lunch at the former India Garden on this site, met for dinner when she was in town. We started with garlic naan, which was crispy on top and very flavorful. For dinner, I got shrimp palak mild; she got palak paneer medium. Both our dishes were yummy and comforting. Dad Joe is the cook, Mom Aarti is the serve, and the oldest daughter greeted everyone Friday night. At 7, she's very self-possessed and, if you're open to it, happy to chat with you. Her baby brother, whom she wheeled around in his stroller, has an amazing smile. And we met her younger sister, who seemed a bit more shy. Miss Greeter was watching TV when we ordered, and we asked if it could be turned down. Mom obliged, and a few minutes later, asked if the Indian music was OK. Oh yes. Appreciated her attentiveness. We had the place to ourselves, which was surprising. Dad come out and talked with us. He did say it's usually quite full. That was such good news, as it's great. This was some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I had the Malai Kofta (SO sweet and savory at once) and my partner had the Tikka Masala. We got Paneer Naan (crispy and flavorful) and Vegetable Samosas for the table and Gulab Jamun for dessert. We ate until we were full and still had so much left over. Everything was really fresh and cooked perfectly. The service was fantastic and the chef even came out and chatted with us. The restaurant was clean and the table setting was really nice. India Hut is well worth the hassle of maneuvering around the construction on Broad Ripple Avenue. They have done a great job of upgrading the food from the previous restaurant called India Garden. Ordered takeout from here a few nights ago. It's a little confusing as you first walk in (watch the step) as there is no visible register/place to check in. But I was greeted as I walked towards the back and grabbed a seat to wait. It was rainy and my shoes were wet. The floor is extremely slippery as it's tile. Be careful. The chef (owner?) brought me my food and was very pleasant. Looks like a family operation I got the mixed grill. I should have taken a picture but it was gone before I thought about it. The food was incredible. So flavorful I didn't even try the sauces (that were included on the side) until I was more than half way through. They were phenomenal and really went well with the dish. Don't be fooled by the street construction - they are open! The owners have been renovating (new chairs and tables arriving tomorrow!) and the restaurant is very clean and nice. I've only had takeout before but had family visiting in town so we came to eat at the restaurant. We tried the fish pakora tonight which was new for us and it was so crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. It was another great meal and I'm looking to coming back to dine in again. read more

We had lunch here 25APR and really enjoyed the experience. The dining room is comfortable and roomy with Indian music in the background and Indian news in Hindi on the TV at the back of the room. My wife is very sensitive to black and red pepper and we had a long discussion with our server, Dawinde, about this concern. A little rough to get to right now with the construction Broadripple Ave, but worth the trek through it. I went to lunch here with 5 other colleagues. The favorites were probably the paneer naan and the tikka masala. For most (maybe all) dishes you are able to specify a spice level, which is nice when dining with people of varying palettes. Other items we tried (and loved), chicken curry, chicken tikka, garlic naan, samosas. We were the only ones dining in at lunch, but a number of people came in for pickup.
