This is the best South Asian restaurant in Appleton. Okay, actually I don't know that for a fact, I've only been to Appleton twice, for conventions, and this is the only Indian restaurant in town I've ever found, so it might be true. Service is excellent, the decor is typical Indian restaurant (cheezy touristy pictures of the Taj Mahal), and the owners must be Muslim (pictures of the Taj Mahal) which means you can get beef, lamb, and chicken dishes, but no pork. (If the owners were Hindi, you'd probably not get any beef dishes, if the owners were Brahmin or Jain you would probably not get any meat at all, that's the only reason I bring up religion, it affects cuisine from that part of the world). I don't know that this restaurant would survive on Devon Avenue in Chicago, they cut corners here on the more expensive spices. My biryani was adequate, but was missing some subtleties found in the best Indian cooking, fresh cilantro, fresh cardamon, fresh chillies, saffron, turmeric, chakra phool, Khus Khus seed, I'm not exactly sure what was missing, I just know that something was missing. Many Indian dishes, like biryani, are a complex mixture of dozens of spices, some of them more expensive than others, and I've noticed that some Indian restaurants, especially those without a lot of direct competition, gradually cut back on some of the spices, substitute canned or boxed powders instead of grinding up fresh, and so on. Still, my meal was pleasant, and I think this place might be the only game in town. Parking is easy, it's in a strip mall, and it's a short ride from the downtown hotels. read more

I absolutely love coming here. I generally go for the lunch buffet because of the killer value and nice selection- but I also go for dinner and dabble with their great menu. Very friendly staff, and if you have been to many Indian restaurants (as I have-globally and domestically) you know that you wont always get the friendliest service, but who cares. As for any Indian restaurant, go for the food, not the staff, even if it is pleasant. Excellent flavors, and great sauces, use them all-especially the green mint/cilantro one-goes with anything. Appleton is not exactly blessed with a diverse selection of excellent ethnic restaurants... But India Darbar turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I grew up eating Indian food, my grandpa is from Burma (Myanmar). I had been feeling home sick and craving Indian food, and Indian restaurants are not easy to find. I picked up my phone and I searched in Google and lo and behold there was two Indian restaurants in Appleton! The first time I ate at the NDND bar and I was so happy with their food the quality and the staff! The next time I decided to try the other Indian restaurant in Appleton, and I have not gone back I go to the India Darbar Restaurant quite often every time I'm in Appleton! This is our go-to Indian Buffet around here. We have only gone for lunch and enjoy the selection! The waiter is friendly and will bring fresh baskets of naan from the kitchen, which is worth the wait. The mango drink is excellent, however this buffet does not offer the spiciest Indian dishes I have ever had. It also could be that they tone the spices down to fit a wider palette. Our favorite Indian place! We bring all our friends here! The service is always friendly and the food is so good! My boyfriend got me hooked on coconut soup it's like dream in a bowl! Just try it, trust me. I am not very experience in Indian cuisine so every visit is a new adventure. I've never been disappointed. If you don't have a lot of time to kill don't go on a weekend during peek business hours. The place gets PACKED and since it appears to just be run by a small family the wait could be awhile. I went with my family on a Saturday night and probably had to wait for an hour for our food, but like I said it was packed. We weren't in a hurry and they kept us busy with the chips and drinks so we really didn't mind. Once the food came we all decided it was worth the wait. Overall, our many experiences here have been great based on taste, service and friendliness. We're always happy to see kala bhai (the manager) and we are very happy to support this local business. They definitely do a good job of keeping local tastes in mind while still catering to south Asians in the area. While the decor and furnishings may not be elegant or modernized, the food and service here is the best in the area and we'll keep coming back. read more

This is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Appleton. My boyfriend and I have moved to the Twin Cities but we both grew up in the Fox Valley. Before we moved, we'd come here at least every couple of weeks for amazing, authentic food, and great service. Now, when we visit home, it's absolutely necessary we have one meal here during our trip. Also, there's one waiter that is always there and he always does a phenomenal job of waiting on us. This is only a review of their lunch buffet. The selection on the buffet is pretty good. They try to offer a good selection of items and I give them points for having goat on the buffet. I also like that the food here tends to be a bit more on the spicy side. They aren't afraid to put some heat in it which is how I like my Indian food. I have take some stars away from both the decor-very bland and non-descript and for the service which always seems to be lacking. service was absurd and has gone downhill. the place needs to be cleaned, it's grimy and is dated. the two servers visible either forgot their pot or opium dose for the day. we got refills only twice during our meal. the samosas were too oily. ingredients were not present in most dishes. a couple pans were not refilled. the mango ice cream was melted into swan form and was warm. the tables were smudged and was creepy overall. 1 star for service. 2 stars on basic buffet food/flavor read more

Great food. We eat here several times a month. Large menu of food options with great flavors. Some of my favorites are the chicken tikka saag and the rajmah. The food is pretty equal to Sia Ram in town, maybe a bit better and a little less expensive. Great place to try if you like Indian food. Just ate here tonight, and we will never go back. Long wait for sub par food, filthy sauce caddy that had obviously been served to other customers throughout the day. We actually watched the server take it towards the kitchen, then turn around and serve the same filthy tray to the poor guy sitting next to us. Mixed vegetable curry was primarily mushy frozen veggies. Perhaps the grossest part was finding what appeared to be animal hair in our food...it was black and white. As vegans, animal hair in our food is not appreciated...we aren't picky diners, but we don't eat out very often, this was way below standards, and has some dangerous practices of recycling sauces to other diners. This place is my favorite Indian restaurant in the Fox Valley. Authentic and delicious. They've got plenty of vegetarian options. My favorite dish is Dal Makhani with Garlic Naan. Plus, an appetizer of Veg Samosas! The portions are large and prices are great. I always say I'll bring home leftovers but the food is just so good that I eat it all instead! Even though I had to drive across town, the portions was reasonably sized and steaming hot. If you carry out, be careful. The curry goat curry was 3 times as spicy as the buffet version! Don't limit yourself to the lunch buffet. The full take out menu is fresh and delicious. I'm an innocent on Indian food but having experienced the alternative in Appleton, this tastes freshly made. My husband and I recently moved away from Appleton and every time we want Indian food we talk about how much we miss India Darbar and the owner there. It's most just the food that we love, but the service and the experience. The owner is so kind and recognizes us when we come in and really goes out of his way to take care of us and ensure we have a wonderful dining experience. Such a nice and generous man. There is something about the food that is just so homey and good, we used to frequent about once a week on average haha so it was quite a change to have to leave. The buffet is a great deal as well, good for a quick stop by when you don't want to wait for the food orders to be made and it includes dessert too. I've been to sai Ram before I found India Darbar and there's just such a difference in atmosphere and price, I much prefer the food and service at Darbar. read more
