This is my Go-To area for scrumptious Indian food when I'm in the area to meet with clients. I actually brought a client this time and we all ordered the batteries chicken which was super tasty and delicious as always. I went for the buffet mentioned in both Yelp and the restaurant's own website, but the waiter told me that there was no buffet when I arrived (at about 1pm on a Tuesday). There also doesn't seem to be a place for buffet now. As for the food, the waiter recommended the plate that was on the top of the menu and was $4 off from the menu price for a special. However I didn't quite get why it was recommended. Two of the three curries served were much too oily, and felt more like a roast eggplant Chinese dish. There's also the strange choice of the flat iron plate -- it created a large surface area for the curries, and its material also helped in conducting heat, so in the end the curries turned cold well before I finished them. Came here for some Indian allyoucaneat goodness. Not sure about weekends, but it's only $10.95 on a Sunday. Parking is nonexistent unless you want to battle it out for a metered spot. This place does have some charm. The walls and decor are a bit classier than most allyoucaneat places. The staff (looks like the owner) is VERY friendly, and quite helpful. Today it was quite dead (lazy Sunday after all), so there were only 2 other occupied tables. Nice and quiet. In terms of food items, the selection is quite small (some 8 entrees and 4 salads), but you can definitely load up, and kill several cute little animals in the process. My favourite was the goat curry. They really got this one right. The other dish worth mentioning is the lentils. You can taste the subtle herbs. I can't explain it, but at most other places it tastes like something you'd buy out of a can. So why 4 stars? The tables are WOBBLY. The problem with having metal tables (while they look good) is that if someone kicks the table, it'll vibrate at just the right frequency to cause all of your glasses to tip over. A downtown Vancouver mainstay of Indian cuisine, that shows how great it is considering how many restos have come and gone. For business meetings, the back seating area definitely offers quietness even despite the lunch buffet. Room divides up nicely. Butter chicken---most impressive part is served with a candle underneath in the pot to keep warm; elegant touch. Boneless chicken succulent with every bite. Even better was the rich creamy tomato sauce for amazing flavour---none of that 'make it spicy' nonsense for the sake of it lol. For the service & ambience, easy repeat. read more

Went there for buffet on a Friday at around 1:30. Most of the food items were die and needed to be refilled. (5 out of the 10 dishes) I had to remind the waiter to refill and was served raw chicken. The owner conveniently said I'll have it redone it's all good. She also commented that next time she will try to serve cooked chicken instead of it being raw. I will more than likely not go there any. Needless to say they did not care to give.somw discount for not serving 3 of the 10 dishes on the buffet nor consider that I was served raw food. read more

What a place! :/ So to set the scene I went for lunch with my wife and our son with some close friends with their two daughters. We was looking for somewhere to go on Davie as that's where my wife works on. We could have have gone anywhere due the fact Davie has a vast array of cuisines to pick from but out of pot luck we pick here! Now I can't lie I had gone in to this already not wanting Indian (I love Indian just not for lunch). First impression is I'm always sceptical when a place is dead...especially on a busy street like Davie...and the fact the door is plastered with "pick me pick me" stickers of different sites and delivery services which looked a lot like one of those old time telephone boxes with graffiti and call centre contact cards! Going in dead - now I have to say that again and the the ending to all this you need to keep in mind! So we order a tone of food, The food, was awful and I'm sorry to be that harsh but it was just wrong! The chicken had this weird taste to it which made me think this either wasn't chicken or was gone bad chicken either way I didn't finish it. Now drawing this Essay to a close I end with talking about the staff!! Remember empty restaurant... no other customers in there..could focus on making it a good experience for us to go spread the word....and maybe go on all those sites they seem so happy to promote. Well sadly not even close. Here we are with with 3 kids ( 1yr, 2yr and a 4yr) trying to keep them entertained while eating (those with children will understand - not easy) and being not the cleanest, we of course tried to keep everything clean and on the table but that sadly wasn't too be. The staff was very rude regarding this issue and was far from sympathetic, we was of course we wasn't over the moon to have had created this either but wasnt like we was purposefully doing it...But not to come up with excuses of having 3 children with limited tables manners and understanding or the fact it was just us in this restaurant I really did feel it was unprofessional and unnecessary for them to be this rude towards us. My conclusion to going here was I left feel like I should have taking the lead and marched everyone out due to not wanting Indian for lunch and the first impressions I was getting!! I don't recommend going here. The pakoras were over cooked hardened nuggets. The plain naan tasted overly crunchy and hard like it had been microwaved while sporting burnt sections (yesterday's naan?) The boss-like (third staff member to make an appearance) stated the entertainment mobile coupon for their restaurant isn't something they would honor and additionally refused the Yelp check in (free pakoras with two main dish purchase). All that was said was that his boss was away (although he seemed to be in charge of the other two persons). The younger male who seated us had no answers to my questions and didn't actively find someone to answer them. Other restaurants offer naan or rice with main dishes-this one doesn't. All dishes arrived without plates being offered in which to eat from (had to ask) even though all surrounding tables had plates set for future customers. The low hanging oil burning open flame lamps above the tables are a hazard. Their bottled tiger beer however was wonderful. read more

Wandering down this street, you can find a lot of delicious looking places to eat. But in sure glad that we chose this place! Firstly, because Indian food is one of my favorites. Secondly, because this place was particularly delicious! I knew right away that I definitely wanted some Palak Paneer because that's usually one of my favorites. And my hubby wanted some lamb. So we asked the waitress for her suggestion. Lamb Shahi Korma. I'm always nervous about ordering lamb because it's so frequently over-cooked and chewy. But we trusted her and went for it! The Palak Paneer was nicely done. But at the end of the day it simply reminded me that a really prefer Saag Paneer because I love it's creaminess! Besides, the lamb stole the show!! The lamb was cooked perfectly - nice and tender. And that creamy cashew sauce was the answer to my dreams!!! I will now be looking to repeat this dish at every Indian restaurant I visit!! read more

Was my go to place. But ordered it last night and when the driver handed me my order, something didn't feel rightI opened up the bag and it was because the portions where half of what they used to be ( same price ). I ordered Vegetable Pakora as a appetizer along with a rice dish and chicken tikka masala. I got 5 pieces of pakora ( 2.5 if for 2 ) I called to see if this was going to be the new normal but they denied that the portions were smaller. The said they just changed the shape of the take out dishes and, here's the funny part, if I had a old take out dish I could bring it down to the restaurant and compare myself. WTF ! If I wanted to go out to eat I wouldn't have order in. Anyway, it's Pure bullshit as I knew strait away something was different before opening the bag. Normally I'd get Two tasty meals out of two dishes but this wouldn't feed dinner for 2. It's a shame because it was/is tasty. But....$33 for food and Tip that couldn't please two. Fuck that! Came here a few days ago for the lunch buffet. What could go wrong for $12 ayce! Entered and was given a table. And off to the buffet I go. The selection is not the greatest, but there should be something for everyone. And definitely enough to get one full. There's a few selections for salad. And the regular staples including butter chicken, tandoori chicken, goat curry, fries, rice, veggies, dessert, and an assortment of sauces. Roti is delivered to your table. My favourite is the butter chicken hands down. And it goes great with the roti. Service is efficient since the buffet is self serve. Plates were removed promptly, usually gone when I'm getting another helping. Great price, decent food, excellent bang for your buck! read more

We ordered tandoori chicken and chicken tikka masala along with mango fizz and aperol spiritz. The food looked great but it was not really how it should taste. Tandoori chicken was marinated only from outside, in my opinion it should have the same juices and spices when you dig in. The chicken tikka masala was nowhere to be like chicken tikka masala. We ordered medium spicy considering Indian standards but it was shockingly sweet (you can skip a dessert after eating this dish). The gravy tasted like the packed pre-made ones which you get at the stores. Also, after telling them that I don't need bell peppers in any dish, I was served tandoori chicken on a bed of bell peppers. Whhhaaat? The only good part was alcohol. Our second trip to India bistro was for takeout: vegetable korma, chicken tandoori, garlic naan, and pilau rice. Cost a whopping $32. I cracked open the rice and my tandoori only to find what can only be described as raw..! Peppers and onions, crunchy and uncooked, chopped and served with only enough pan time to warm them. Chicken was pre-cooked and unlike any tandoori I've ever had. Very dry and missing the classic red seasoning and colour - doubtful it's ever seen a tandoor. Flavorless, dry, hopeless. So while I'm cooking my meal in a pan for the second time, my boyfriend opens his veggie korma to a resounding "what the fuck?" How does he describe the dish? Horrible, watery, tasteless. (He should know - he's a Brit.) Picture posted - it looked absolutely foul. And then the garlic naan - ever seen fluorescent coloured flatbread? Skip this, too. So there we have it. I eat at this restaurant when it first opened... absolutely delicious food. In the last 2 to 3 years it's been up and down and tonight was very disappointing. Most of our favourite dishes were bland. It wasn't a matter of salt - only made the dishes more salty (without enhancing the flavour) which was also an issue several months ago. The Pakora was way too salty - not anymore. BUT, it seems either they have run out of the proper spices or are being very restrictive when making the food... flavourless. So very disappointing as I have supported this place again and again over the years. So sad... read more

Post pride parade, with last bits of the heat wave still lingering, India Bistro was a nice, clean, inviting, and most importantly, AC equipped haven one can find along Davie St. The interior comes close to other Indian fine dining establishments, though despite being liquor licensed, and categorized as fine dining, prices offer good value, with a very reasonable price point. Service was very friendly, though I would have liked the water refilled more often with that scorching heat, not to mention the spiced dishes I've ordered. We requested medium spice and it was perfectly spiced to my liking. The flavours were very tasty and original, the spices and ingredients concocted were something I haven't tasted before, it was pleasantly unique. The chicken had a smokiness that hit the right spot. I would have liked the naan a bit chewier and denser, but nonetheless, it was a solid meal from start to finish. A great find! read more

Have been ordering from India Bistro for years but something has changed. Food is still good but the driver showed up wearing an undersized mask that did not cover his nose. We were charged a delivery fee on a $40 order. Driver said they changed if distance is over one km whereas before it was two km. We are 1.2 km from the restaurant. Website says 5 km. Driver was not being honest and not being safe. I phoned to complain. Was told they would deliver a $5 cash refund. Still waiting for that to happen. They said the driver didn't have better mask and the one he was wearing was too small. Website says touchless payment. Don't believe it. Their credit card machine is so lame I had to take near a window before it connected. Clean your hands after touching it! They used to know my address and order history from my phone number. Not now. They couldn't figure out how to issue a $5 credit against my credit card. I can be patient with management errors these days, but India Bistro's carelessness about public health is inexcusable. We will not bend the curve if we enable this type of careless behaviour. Dr Bonnie Henry would not patronize this restaurant. read more

Yikes. What a disappointment and disgrace this place has become. It started going downhill even pre-COVID. I ordered food from here back in 2018, and ended up waiting 45 minutes in the restaurant for a single dish for takeout, despite there being only one other patron in the restaurant. Two years later, I had a hankering for Indian food, and decided to give these guys some business since I'm sure they suffered over the past six months. Absolutely awful. I ordered three dishes--vegetable jalfrezi, chana masala, and palak paneer. They asked what spice level I preferred on each; since I was sharing with someone with a lower heat tolerance, I got mild on the palak, medium on the chana malasa, and medium-to-hot on the veg jalfrezi. She repeated back my preferences after I stated them over the phone. I also got two orders of garlic naan, everyone's favourite side dish. I paid over fifty bucks for the whole order (not the sort of money I spend on takeout, so this was a treat) and brought it home. All three dishes were bland; by this, I mean, not seasoned at all, and not even close to having been tailored to any spice preference. No heat, nothing, and absolutely no salt or pepper. They all tasted like boil-in-a-bag curries, perhaps worse, in a generic nasty tomato sauce, and the vegetables were limp and tasteless. No heat, nothing at all, in any of them. I suspect they pre-make several batches, freeze them, and thaw them as need be. As far as actual temperature, each dish was lukewarm at best. The garlic naan was cold, rubbery, and coated in some yellow garlic powder. I called to voice my absolute disgust over this order. The woman who had taken my order and given it to me in person didn't sound too shocked, and said, "Okay. we'll give you a credit on the jalfrezi." That's it. Didn't take my details, didn't take into account that I had wasted $50 on the worst Indian food I've ever ordered, didn't even consider that I didn't WANT any more of their food. Avoid this place. I tried supporting a local business here, but it seems they are utterly indifferent to proper Indian cuisine or customer service. ETA: I took the restaurant on their offer for a credited veg jalfrezi and garlic naan. Nothing changed, except adding frozen corn to the limp, tasteless jalfrezi. There was no flavour, seasoning, or heat, and the naan once again was rubbery and coated in garlic powder, yet inexplicably, no salt. We wandered in before a concert and had the most lovely experience here. I want to move here just for this delicious food! Naan bread was soft inside crunchy outside, tikka masala chicken was served bubbling hot and flavorful. Onion pakora was soooo crisp and delicious. We loved the dumplings and my husband went for a fish dish that he said was the best he ever had. I found this place on Yelp, and saw they they delivered, but it was fifteen minutes until closing time on a Friday night so my expectations were slim. However I called expecting India Bistro to deny our request, and instead a bubbly voice on the other end confirmed our order would be delivered post-haste, no problem! No joke, ten minutes later our food was ready, warm, fresh and packaged with care.... Indian culinary wizardry MAGIC. Order came to $39 with two entrees, naans and rice. Since moving to Davie street area in 2005, I've observed the miniwar going on between All India and India Bistro (they are directly across from each other). There's definitely something going on at these places... perhaps it's a little bit of a Montague and Capulet feud of our very own? Both places seem to have trouble keeping staff, and I've even seen a few defect to All India from India Bistro. One Yelper commented that they were suprised to have a 'honger waitress'; this doesn't surprise me at all; I've also been served by Hispanic, French, Caucasian, and occasionally Indian staff! But on average, the service has been fine at both restaurants; reasonably efficient, reasonably pleasant. I've chatted quite a bit with the owner of India Bistro, and he's a really decent guy, always eager to help out. I actually proposed to my wife there because of the ambience, the quality food and because of the fond memories we have of India Bistro. On that day, I was incredibly nervous, but the owner and staff went out of their way to make the evening a truly special one for my wife (yes she said yes!) and I. Food: I've tried most of the dishes, and love them all. But my favorites are chicken jalfrezi, lamb rogan josh (If I want good lamb, I actually go to India Bistro for this dish), eggplant bhartha, butter chicken and the garlic naan which is delectable. Their veg. pakoras are also really tasty, though they can be a bit salty. Ambience: It's a large and open restaurant and very tastefully decorated, and it's quite a romantic place to go for an evening dinner. Service: despite the frequent changes in staff -which is frustrating -we've never been disappointed. Pricing: very reasonable. The dishes may look small, but you'll fill up really quickly! read more

Love this place for dinner. Best butter chicken I've ever had. (I don't like it too spicy and I find the flavour comes out better if you don't get it spicy). Everytime we go, we get the butter chicken and then try to get one new thing, and we're rarely dissapointed. They also have about 4-5 different types of naan bread. Butter naan is my favourite (you can see a trend here...) but the girlfriend likes the naan with nuts and spices in it. I think it's called Paswari naan, but even if it is I wouldn't know how to spell it properly. We try to get here at least once a month. We don't eat out much but when we're craving indian, we don't go anywhere else. One good thing we just learned is that they actually have FREE parking (for about 8 cars or so) in their parking lot off the alley behind the restaurant. This is hands down the best North Indian in Downtown Vancouver. I've been here 4 times with various friends and I consistently convert them into fans. Went there again 2 days ago on a busy Sunday night and ordered shrimp vindaloo medium hot (probably a bit mild for someone from India) which was delicious and tantalizingly hot; a vegetable biryani which was well-seasoned, had a thoughtful potpourri of ingredients in it, and was aesthetically pleasing; and a side of peshwari, which was a sweet walnut-stuffed naan that was flavourful enough to eat alone. The lassi was a bit thin in consistency but well-done. Service was provided by a pleasant chatty and attentive waiter. The ambiance fantastically versatile for both couples and groups. read more

Although I haven't been to a ton of Indian restaurants, India Bistro is my favourite Indian restaurant in Vancouver. First time I stumbled on this place for lunch during the summer. They had their $10 lunch buffet which for an AYCE buffet, pretty darn tasty and a wide selection. Most recently I went and we shared butter chicken (non-Indians' dish of choice) and Chicken Methi (because it just sounded cool). We added rice and also regular Naan bread as well as garlic naan, both of which were amazingly fresh and tasty. The Chicken Methi had some punch to it but the flavouring was stellar. It has dry fenugreek leaves (never heard of them), but it was delicious. Butter chicken was solid as always. Service was great from the moment you entered the door. The owner is always friendly and welcoming. If you're downtown and crave anything Indian, take a walk down Davie and chow down here. read more

It's not incredibly often that I give a thumbs up straight across the board, but after a tasty and pleasant first time meal here, I really have nothing to complain about. Davie St is chock full of food waiting to be eaten, and in a desperate search for a mouth-watering meal, I knew I would find something along the path. I couldn't help but notice all the "People Love Us On Yelp" stickers on the door, so I took it as a sign from the Yelp Gods that we had found our destination. India Bistro is medium sized, and the interior is tasteful and relaxing, with lots of brickwork, cultural artwork, and other little ethnic touches such as the lighting fixtures. Since I never enjoy feeling as if I'm dining on stage beneath a spotlight, I welcomed the low lighting and the big, open windows streaming in plenty of natural light. We were seated quickly, and both the gentleman who brought us our menus and the lady who served us were both incredibly welcoming and polite. After a little contemplation, my friend and I opted to share the chicken tikka masala, prawn goa curry, and an order of rice and naan. Some waiting, and a bit of photo-taking later, my dining counterpart and I are smiles ear to ear as we taste the food. Hot, spicy, fresh, and delicious. That's the best way to describe it. I think my second time around, I will ask for the food to be very spicy (we chose medium to be safe), but I'm far from complaining. Completely satiated, but still licking my lips for something sweet to tie it all together, I wish I would have noticed the mango cheesecake on their desserts menu, because that would have been a treat! My husband and I found this restaurant two years ago when we were visiting Vancouver. I've never had a bad Indian meal in Vancouver, so I was wanting to eat Indian while there. My husband will accompany me to Indian restaurants, but will only eat one dish: Butter Chicken. We were wandering the streets not far from our hotel and spotted the India Bistro. After checking the menu and confirming the presence of Butter Chicken, we went in. We were both completely satisfied with our meals. His Butter Chicken was immensely flavorful. I'm not sure why I decided to go vegetarian that night, but I ordered the Eggplant Bharta. It was, quite frankly, the best eggplant dish, of any sort, I've ever had in my life. The eggplant was broiled first (perhaps cooked in the tandoor?) and had a marvelous smokey taste. It was perfectly spiced. Both are dishes had just the right amount of "heat" per our requests. (I tend to like my food quite a bit hotter than he does.) We were back in Vancouver this past weekend, stayed at the same hotel, and again, made our way to the India Bistro. We each ordered the same dishes. My food was not quite the heaven on earth that I remembered, but still very, very good and definitely worth going back for. Let me be blunt about this place: if they cooked that way back in India they'd be marched out of the country. The lamb rogan josh tasted like...like...lamb in salty brown sauce. The paneer makhani seems to have been the result of two bags of sugar colliding into each other at high speed. So yes, I'm giving this place one measly star. I have eaten here about a dozen times now and even though I ate an order of vegetable pakoras all to myself this afternoon, I find myself wanting to go back for dinner. The food is amazing, but what got me in the door is that they clearly mark vegan and gluten-free choices on the menu. No confusion. I tried this place for that reason and literally can't stop going back. You know what's even better? Free delivery. Oh my, when I found this out I realized it was all over. Now when the issue of maybe ordering in for dinner comes up, I will not hear talk of pizza ever again. Sorry pizza, I want pakoras and pappadum and chana masala. I have popped in with my partner at various times of the day, once we had the tasty lunch buffet (lots of veg choices!) and other times we've had an early dinner, midafternoon snack, or later evening feast. The service has always been welcoming and prompt. As is delivery, by the way. Not long to wait for pakora gratification. :) read more

Also, below you can see the Mangotini - which was very dilute - frooi (an Indian mango juice product) mixed with small amount of vodka. The BF took me on a date here, since we love the Indian food, and we were exploring new options in our hood, we stopped in to check this place out. I liked the style of the restaurant; the brick walls and decor give the place a warm feeling. The BF was set on ordering some veggie tandoori dish, which sounded really good in theory, but when it arrived, I was a little disappointed because it wasn't a saucy dish. I'm a saucy girl and I like my Indian dishes with enough sauce for me to spoon it up with some Naan bread, which we ordered, along with rice, and I had to eat both dry. You can probably see my disgruntled face while you are reading this. The dish was still pretty good, it tasted like the veggies had been skewered and BBQ'd, and it came with big chunks of paneer. It looked and smelled so good that the table next to us ordered the same thing after inquiring what it was that we ordered. But like I said... I need the sauce! I should have just hid a bottle of curry under the table to throw on top of that shit! We also ordered a sampler appetizer, but tried to smooth talk the waitress into letting us have something instead of the chicken pakoras that came with it. Unfortunately, the waitress was not hypnotized by our awesomeness and said we could just get more veggie pakoras, which was fine by me. The pakoras were pretty good, but I wasn't as huge a fan of the samosas. I would like to try some of the other dishes at this place, since it smelled so darn good in there, and for some stupid reason I let the BF order, oh wait... it's because he paid the bill! I guess if you're paying you get to pick what you want. I knew I should have had another martini! I guess that means next time when the food is good, I have to pay, so it might be a while before we're back afterall! read more
