Went to the larger pet store in town and they had no cat dewormer so came over here and imagine them being a smaller store and they actually had tons in stock in several different varieties. I love this local pet store! They have the friendliest employees and the best deals. I go out of my way to come here, even though there's a pet store closer to my apartment. It's also really nice that you can call and ask for them to put something at the front for you so you can just walk in and purchase and walk out. Also, when I was pregnant they offered to help carry out a heavy bag of cat food for me. 5 stars for service, prices and variety in toys, food and treats. Lastly they have a dog washing station if you have a dog. I don't but my parents do and they bring her here. They include shampoo, brushes, towels and a blow dryer. I'm replying to those 3 girls that were in the store yesterday and now I see a negative review by that Stephanie F. My son and I were there yesterday buying some fish like we've been doing for years. We saw 3 girls walking around the room flashing lights from their phone on every animal evaluating them like they were veterinarians! Overheard them this store knows nothing, I wanted to say something and probably should have. Let me tell you Mike in the fish room has worked for them for as long as we have lived here and coming on 7 years. Guy knows everything about animals as well as the store manager Jake, so when I hear 3 20 year old something vet wanna be's telling them they know better.. you know nothing! Come to find out later all 3 were just vet techs .. so do what you know clean up poop, pee and take the trash out. Like to find out what vet you work at? I tracked down the same staff member twice to ask different questions, and both times, she took the time to help me on my search with a smile on her face. Hit and miss here, but more miss. I rarely find what I need and they do all of their customer service from behind the cash register. Sometimes they jump on you right when you come in, "can I help you?" before you have even walked 5 feet into the store, and again, it's the cashier asking, not someone on the sales floor. It's a nervous environment. The prices are ridiculously high on more unique items like pet beds or carriers, competitive prices on food or everyday items. They recently expanded their inventory, which I haven't fully explored, but honestly, because the service is not good/friendly, I avoid this store. read more

Nice selection of aquatics with some cool harder-to-find critters like gardneri killifish, live feeder worm cultures, and samurai gouramis. Customer service is top-notch too. Kevin is a special boy who goes above and beyond, so ask for him; he smiled a giant set of teeth and I don't think he blinked his eyes when he asked if he could help me with anything initially as I looked around... gave me the heebie-jeebies for sure, so I politely declined... but then as I was about to slip out unnoticed, we locked eyes and I just took a chance in admitting I needed his help. Very happy I did and I'll be coming back when he's there if I can coordinate it in the future. I judged him all wrong for being basically just a happy, quirky, empathetic soul. Shame on me... So cut him some slack -- once he gets talking if you let him, you'll understand why he's exactly the type of passionate animal-lover weirdo you'd want helping you at a pet store. I've been shopping here for years. I've always been very happy they have a great selection, low prices and very good, knowledgeable customer service persons. Recently I made a purchase of a pet. They are marked no guarantee on gender. It turned out my purchase was the wrong gender. This caused quite a bit of trouble for me. I 100% understand no guarantees and had no expectation Re: my purchase. My problem is when I went back to the store I let them know that the animals were marked wrong. When the employee told me no guarantee I went to the manager. He repeated the no guarantee answer. A few days later I went back in and saw they had done nothing. The rational was "the breeder marks them". They continued to sell them knowing there could be a problem! Today, there are just 2 of the 5 left after I purchased mine. I am not an expert on gendering rodents but they could contact the breeder to look into it. I sure hope there are no baby rodents in my future! I also hope the other 3 purchases work out. In my opinion "no guarantee" is not the same as "we don't give a s@it. Sorry not sorry" It is sad this happened because I won't be going back to that store. read more

I went in a few months ago to wash my three large dogs, I leave the dogs in the car while making the transaction and clarify that there will be shampoo, towels etc back there and ask if there are any particulars I should know about the baths as I just moved to the area and am used to Pet Food Express washes which I typically go to every two weeks. They tell me that everything I need is back there so I go grab the dogs and get the first one in the tub. It's then that I realize there's no shampoo in the room, only an empty bottle of conditioner on the floor. There are also no towels and the tub is dirty (I don't personally care about a dirty tub but worth mentioning). I poke my head out but no employees in sight which is weird because they usually have tons of staff, I wait a minute and call out but no response. I get the wet dog out of the tub and wrangle all three around the store trying to find an employee. I find one, he's super nice and says he'll be right in with shampoo and towels. I go back and get the wet dog back in the tub, employee appears with shampoo, I rush to finish washing the dog because the water is turning cold, then I realize he didn't bring towels. I stick my head out and ask another employee for towels for three dogs, she looks annoyed and after 5 minutes returns with two small towels. I ask her about the water temp, it's sprinkling snow and COLD which is why I'm not just hosing my dogs off in the yard, I don't want a cold wash. She says she's not sure but that sometimes when the water is turned off then on it gets cooler but might warm up. So I start washing the next dog, it's really cold but I don't feel like dragging two wet dogs and a dry one around the store to find another crabby employee so I just wash the other two in cold water. I use the two tiny crappy towels and blow dry them with the weak, cool blow dryer. I mention that the water is freezing to the employee behind the counter on my way out and point out that it's currently snowing and my dogs are still wet because of insufficient towels and a cold dryer and she just says "Oh weird! Since you bought three you'll have a free wash waiting on your account next time!". No thanks. I really wanted to like this store as I have five dogs and love to support local, I didn't think anything could drive me to start shopping at Petco but here we are... read more

I was pleased to find a pet store with all the necessities closer to Nevada City than Petco and independently owned also. Their prices and selection for dog and cat food are comparable to Petco though they do have less animals available (which doesn't bug me). They lose a star for customer service. They always seem to have a good handful of employees on shift when I come in but none of them stop chatting with each other to ask if I need help. When I do ask for help, it's pretty mediocre as they seem to be slightly irritated by my intrusion into their personal conversations. Get with it, people, you're at work not a party. read more

First of all I will start out by saying that I am a local and had been shopping here for well over 10 years. My experiences had always been good and I didn't have anything bad to say about them. I always enjoyed trying some of the free samples of pet food they often have on hand for paying customers. Most recently, however, a rather unpleasant experience has me thinking I just got lucky all those years. I had purchased 3 tropical fish (all the same kind) for my tank at home. I have been keeping tropical fish as pets for well over 30 years. These variety I purchased were the same as several I already had in my tank. Within several hours, one went belly up and died. I promptly bagged it up and took it back the same day. I do realize that their store policy states that when this happens, the customer must bring in some tank water for testing. However, in the past when I've had this happen so quickly after a purchase, the employees never actually tested my water for anything, and merely gave me another fish or some credit as a token of good customer service. This time, the supposed fish expert on duty that day (who looked like some sort of Marilyn Manson groupie) tested my water and told me that it was dirty (which it was not!) and that there was a problem with nitrites. She showed me the test water held up next to the results chart, and the color of my water was *just barely* tinged yellow outside of the clear "safe" range. I didn't actually watch her do the test, so I can't be certain of the honesty of it in the first place. She then recommended I purchase a product, which I informed her I already had and used on a regular basis. I also informed her I had purchased 2 other of the same type of fish, as well as already having several of the same in my tank for several years, and none of them went belly up and died. Her only response was to repeat exactly what she just told me regarding the water quality, practically word for word, as if this is something she tells customers on a regular basis. This left me feeling like this place will always find a way to blame the death of an unhealthy fish on the customer, regardless of what the water test comes out as, just for the sake of saving themselves a few bucks. Well I suppose if one $5 fish was worth losing a faithful 10+ year customer over, then fine keep my money. That's what it cost me to learn that I will no longer be buying fish here. I hate to give my money to the big-box Petco in town, but at least they have the respect to give me a new fish or some credit when they know they gave me one that was sick in the first place. In addition to this, I have also purchased some bulk bird food here which I later discovered was infested with meal moth larvae. So steer clear of that as well! read more

This review is about the Grass Valley store. I have been a frequent customer. They have the kind of canned food that works well for my rescue dog. I also love the samples of dry food that I use as treats. Every time I've been there, people were friendly and nice, sometimes a little bit too-forced super-nice, but that's ok with me. I came to understand that one of the canned foods I was buying there was unavailable for a while. The people I asked about it didn't seem to know why. I actually emailed the company that makes the food and they told me that shelters were buying it up real fast and retail places were running out, so they had changed their production and distributing to try to meet the need. The representative told me it should be available to order in the next week or so. When I learned this, I went to this store and a VERY NICE HELPFUL young man got out a notebook for special orders. He took my information and told me I would get a call as soon as the product arrived in the store. Since I go by there on my usual errands, I checked in to see what was happening a few times. I spoke with a couple people about when they thought it would be in. I was assured they would call me when it arrived. Meanwhile, I checked with another local store that stocks the same product and they had ordered and received it as soon as it became available. I bought a case there. So, I had gone back by this store, and saw that the food I wanted was on a pallet outside the store. Still wondering when they might call me. I went there today, about a week later, and the food was on the shelf. I brought a can to the counter and asked about why I wasn't called when it came in. The answer I got from one guy was 'eeehhh' I said 'eeehhh? he said...'sometimes it happens'. Another guy finally went and got the book and found my request and said something like, oops, looks like we didn't call you. "It happens." Did they say sorry...maybe...but the message I received from this experience is, don't count on them to follow through. and expect 'eeehhh' as the reason. So, the store is well-stocked with high-end, highly rated foods for pets (usually well-stocked, for most things), the people are SUPER DUPER NICE kinda...except when 'eeehhh' is an acceptable answer for not following through on a written customer request. Sorry folks...it's rare that I write out anything negative. But, I used to work in a store where we took special orders, and we were very thoughtful about our customers and helped them if we could. Especially customers that counted on us, and came to know us. If we received what they needed and didn't call the, it didn't happen when I was there, which was quite few years. Perhaps this will be a wake up call for folks in this store to be more thoughtful. I wanted this to be my store of choice...we'll see. read more

The people that work here are helpful and knowledgeable. Everyone seems to like their job! I went with a friend to use their self wash and it was the best. Clean towels, shampoo and dryers. This is a great place to go, they also price match too! Their return policy is amazing. Our dog Bam Bam decided after we had purchased a new bag of dog food that he was tired of it! When I checked in yesterday, Yelp said this store was closed. Odd, because it was open and the busiest I've ever seen it! This place has been here since I've lived in the area. They may not carry as much as the big box pet stores, but they can special order just about anything. Personal experience tells me that most chain pet stores can't order what's not on their planograms. I like shopping at smaller pet stores because of their customers service and "boutique" pet food offerings. Yesterday was an anniversary sale here. They had some terrific deals on pet food. It would be worth it to check for their next big sale---only wish I could be that organized. read more

This is the place to go for pet supplies in grass valley! Its much nicer and better prices than the big chain store. The staff are always very friendly and helpful we frequently shop in the fish/reptile section as we have two lizards and a fish tank. The staff are always eager to take the time to discuss how to care for the pets they sell and explain any questions regarding pets or products! My 2.5 year old daughter loves coming in to look at all the pets, they're constantly getting new stock. We also have a pug and they have nice monthly sales on good brands of dog food. They'll also order anything you need that they don't currently have in the store. Highly recommended shopping here for pet supplies! read more

I have been coming to I.P. in Grass Valley since my 10 year old standard poodle was a puppy. I've been bathing her here and buying everything she needs all this time and am so grateful for this store. Jake, the manager and the other employees take their time to answer my questions when I change foods, which is often to accommodate my girl's issues. They recommend the best products when I don't know the details about them - I ask a LOT of questions and am never made to feel like anything but a valued customer even when they are very busy. Typically we have had good service there yet, I was so disappointed when we went to pick up some small KOI for our pond. We picked out 4 small ones even though the majority of the KOI that they had on display were sick looking - swimming sideways, and some looked like they were upside down. In addition to this, their area for fish was not clean - the tanks most all of them had dead fish in them. I realize that dead fish happen but geez, clean them out of the tank. There was even one on the floor that had jumped out - the clerk said he had been there awhile - which I was surprised that he even admitted to. In one tank, they had frogs - there were 3 dead ones and one was eating off of them. A beta fish was dead long enough to have a mold cloud growing around it. Just disgusting. This is why I am more surprised that we went and bought the KOI anyway. Now, after one day - two of the KOI have died. We took them in with a sample of our water and they would not replace them - said that the dead fish in the water sample would not give them a "good" reading. Well read this........We are not going to support you any longer - we'll take PETCO any day! read more

I am very disappointed! I have been coming to the incredible pets on Sutton for the past few months to buy my dog food (taste of the wild). I am a breeder and so I buy lots of dog food every month, I buy the biggest bags of both adult and puppy food. I'm sorry to say I will be giving my business to the Tractor Supply store on 49 from now on. Here is the reason: I really needed to get some dog food this evening and I knew I was cutting it close on time, but when we arrived just barely after 5pm, they hadn't even packed up the outside products. I jumped out of the car sure that they would allow a good customer to give them some money, but when I was stopped at the door I asked if I could just grab 3 bags of dog food of the food that was outside, but the boy working there said "no, we're closed and the registers are down." I looked inside to see customers still paying and even one women walking around the aisles still shopping. I said "please I only need these 3 bags of dog food, I will be very quick." He said, "sorry no" And then my husband said, "there's people still paying and shopping" and pointed in the window to which the boy just looked at him and rudely walked away. They are losing out on thousands of dollars of my business by turning me away, I just don't think that's how you treat your customers. I understand that there is such a thing as a closing time and I arrived just a couple minutes after, but I believe there is also such a thing as customer service and customer retention, which they have neither of. read more

I bought a betta fish for $10 from this store and a day later it died! I contacted them for a refund or to at least get another betta and they would not do anything except test water and said betta fish don't have a return policy (probably because their fish are unhealthy). Never going back to this store and now I have a diseased tank,dead fish, and wasted $10 which will turn into another $10 to purchase another fish. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE and DONT BUY A FISH HERE unless you want to disease your whole tank and waste money. read more
