We started going to Mother Lode in 2003 up to last year. Some time back one of our four dogs started limping in the right rear leg. I went there and the vet took him in for an X-ray and came back out to tell me he had a torn meniscus and booked a surgery date for $4,500. The next day he quit limping. I got two other vet's opinion (Dr. Strolle and Dr. Barker) and that was a torn meniscus does not show on an X-ray. I then Googled and found the same thing: one cannot see a meniscus tear on a standard X-ray. Because the meniscus is made of soft tissue and cartilage, it does not absorb X-ray beams like bone does, leaving it invisible on the film. I called and canceled the fraudulent surgery. One of our dogs had a problem with his ear and they wanted $1,000 to sedate him. Had it done for $500 elsewhere and they checked both ears. Then one needed to have a tooth pulled. Mother Lode wanted $2,200 and we got it done elsewhere for $500 including a teeth cleaning. Some of the people there are rude and they do not respond to emails as I wanted to express my concerns to an owner. Since Dr. Tim and Erin left and he sold the business to Vetcor, it has gone way downhill. Incidentally, some years back Dr. Tim amputated the right front leg of our Doberman for $900 - Loomis wanted $2,000. It seems many vets are charging exorbitant fees and many pay it as there's no other options except to shop around as we did. No wonder there are so many dogs in shelters - people cannot afford dogs anymore. read more

Amazing!!! 10/10!!! We adopted a 14.5 year old Collie 2 months ago who had never been given a dental by her previous owner. She had also not been groomed for likely years. I want so much to give her paradise after all she has been through. My major concern was the price of her dental. One of her canines and 1 other tooth were grey/green and rotting. Several of her other teeth were ground down to the pulp. My local vets in the Bay Area literally wanted to charge more than a small car to fix her mouth. Her teeth had been chattering and she was drooling from day 1. I knew she was in horrible pain but I don't have 10K to spend, even on myself. She was so neglected for years, I didn't want to have to put her down for the dental pain which another human (I am sure either unknowingly or unwillingly without malice) inflicted on her. I called my sister in law who was a vet tech for years to ask for advice. She said, "Go to Mother Lode in Grass Valley. It's worth the trip." It's a 3 hour car ride from home but our innocent Collie'steeth chattering and droolng made me not even care. I made the appt that day. Unfortunately, I caught the flu the day before her first available appt. I had to reschedule for a month out. Worth it!!! I am crying with happiness in the car because my beautiful, sweet, intelligent and loving senior Collie can now have a hopefully long and fun, pain free life of adventure at home with me, my hubs, and the rest of her pack- 2 chihuahuahs, 1 of whom she is already bonding with and the other on the way, and our 14 year old kitty who she loves. I am SO grateful to Mother Lode and the amazing and very caring staff here. Dr Cameron extracted 7 very rotted teeth, 2 of which were complex to remove. The techs even shaved off the horribly matted dreadlocks she hadn't let me touch *and* trimmed her nails. With Care Credit for 12 months, I will be able to comfortably pay off her dental that would have ruined my husband and I financially if we'd done it back home in Sunnyvale. The facility here is *beautiful*. They have an in house lab and the vets and techs *know their stuff*. They obviously take great care and attention to their work- they are the Real Deal. Thank you so much, Mother Lode Veterinary hospital, for giving us time to heal her emotional wounds now that her teeth will no longer be agony. This is a highly compassionate, loving and amazing vet hospital. I know of SO many other vets where dogs or cats didn't survive their dentals- especially if the fur baby was over 10 years old. I write this review with a heavy heart. I typically have nothing but wonderful things to say about this clinic. However, on January 20th I took in my elderly cat and knew in my heart I would not be bringing him home. After the staff ran tests and concluded my Louie was in kidney failure I made the difficult decision to put him down. With that said, they administered some medication and explained that I would have a few minutes with my boy. As I settled in to say my goodbyes and wipe tears, I was interrupted by the staff to discuss payment... really?! I did express to the vet of my disapproval and he apologized and although that did not sit well I made excuses for the insensitive situation. Thereafter, I paid the $600 plus dollars to leave with an empty carrier believing I would receive a call when my Louie's ashes would be available for pick-up. This part was NOT explained to me and for this I am beyond heartbroken. I received a call from another company to inform me that my precious Louie was in a freezer waiting for me to make a decision on whether he would be cremated alone or with a group of animals with differing prices of upwards of $500 plus dollars. My minimalist option at this point was a tuft of his hair for $125... this is every pet parent's ultimate nightmare. This was extortion and playing on emotions of owners everywhere AND NOT OKAY! I have three other fur babies at home and I will NO longer take another pet to Mother Lode. This facility has become too commercialized and lost sight of sensitivity to end of life care. :( read more

The doctors are fine. The techs and front desk staff are just so confused. You get different information from everyone. I took my three pets here for nearly a year and spent thousands, but I'm over it. Last visit I was never told I was going to be charged a sick pet fee for a booster shot until I was already in the exam room. Then I was told by the tech I would only be charged for one exam fee for the two pets I brought in for booster shots. They both had up to date visits. Then they brought me a bill charging $120 each for sick pet exams! I was told a manager would contact me about the charges.... They never did. The employees are nice but poorly trained. I gave this place a fair chance but it's like pulling teeth dealing with them for appointments, prescriptions, etc. Their online pharmacy is terrible and you have to a pick up a written prescription to order from other online pharmacies, because they won't send it electronically. Dr. Paola what a wonderful veterinarian we stumbled upon at a very scary time. Our 12 year old very active mutt (boxer mix) girl Iva was having a normal morning being her rambunctious self. Jumped down a Few steps from our bus and landed wrong. Instantly I knew she landed wrong but I wasn't too worried figured maybe she pulled something after all she's 12. Within a 30 min period while I was getting ready for us to head out my boyfriend realized something was wrong with our girl. She wasn't able to control her bladder nor stand up. In a panic I jumped to social media and. Yelp as always being something I like to check I found Motherlode. I called explained the situation and they looked and checked for the next available appointment. I remember it was for 12 or 1230 and it was 1140am. We opted for the noon appt. While there our girls inability to control her bladder continued. In the waiting room the staff was so nice about it giving us necessary towels to help with the mess. They rushed to Give us a room and more towels while they also cleaned the mess our girl made in the waiting room. When Dr Paola came into the room she was so gentle, patient and in NO rush with our already normally anxiety ridden pup. After a few quick exams she explained what our girl could possibly have. She was clear, knowledgeable and very easy to understand. We honestly left there content with the service and confident in what was required from us for the best care to our furkid. She told us the severity of what our pup had but gave us hope and lessened our worries. I am so relieved to say our Iva is back to her active self with us being very cautious that she doesn't over work herself and she's so much better today March 15 than she was March 6 when this all happened. DO NOT GO HERE unless you are prepared to read your pet's pathology reports and tell the so called "veterinarians" how to do their job! I was a loyal customer for years, driving 50 min each way because I believed they were worth it. I started going there when Dr. Van Geem was still there. Little did I know that the quality left with him and Mother Lode remains nothing but a pretty building with overworked, rude staff and incompetent vets. I just lost my Doobie to metastatic mast cell cancer because of their negligence. He had his first mast cell tumor removed in 2021. Was told it was low grade and nothing to worry about. He had his second mast cell tumor in March 2022. Removed by Dr. Paola this time. Sent in for pathology again and was told again: it's low grade, nothing to worry about. Just keep watching for more. In May 2022, I noticed a new lump that looked like a mast cell tumor and made an appointment for removal in 3 weeks. I also noted that he had bruised looking skin in the same area he had his first mast cell removed. I got concerned and sent a photo to Dr. Paola and asked if I should come sooner to have that looked at. Got a call from the front desk that Dr. Paola said it can wait and it does not look concerning. Three weeks later, he gets his skin tumor removed and my worst nightmare came true. Dr. Paola tells me she did an ultrasound of his bruise and it is his lymph node that was enlarged. She took a sample and it's filled with mast cells. My Doobie had metastatic mast cell cancer. My world shattered. I asked her, why does it look so bruised? Her response: "That is typical for mast cell cancer." Are you kidding me?! I sent a photo 3 weeks ago of the bruise on the same area he had a mast cell cancer removed and it was not of concern and now she's telling me this is typical?!? Unreal. I requested all records and pathology reports from the previous mast cells and came to find out that this clinic is responsible that my dog now had metastatic cancer! 1. The first mast cell tumor did NOT have clean margins, they had an intern cut on my Doobie and the incision was WAY TOO SMALL to sufficiently cut out a mast cell tumor! Perfect conditions for recurrence and metastasis. Now the lymph node right there had cancer....coincidence? 2. The pathology report of the second tumor from March 2022 contained in my opinion an error as it was titled "Low Grade" but the description of the tumor was consistent with a high grade tumor and even listed a life expectancy of 2-4 months! That was in March. I am learning about this in June! I brought this up to Dr. Paola who did not care. Dr. Cameron agreed that the report made little sense and promised to call the lab. He calls back and stated he spoke with them and it was a low grade tumor, the description is just a little confusing. Well, turns out Dr. Cameron is a liar! I just recently requested all records again and come to find out that the lab added an addendum to the report admitting they made a mistake and it was indeed a high grade tumor!! I had to catch it and they don't even have the decency to tell me that they missed this and that it bas been updated?! After I spent thousands for the surgery and pathology to TREAT the tumors and keep my baby alive! After consulting with three oncologists, I learned that they should have re-excised the first tumor to get clear margins, they should have caught the mistake on the pathology report instead of me, and Doobie should have been referred to oncology in March 2022 to discuss options for treatment to PREVENT what eventually happened. Metastatic mast cell Cancer. Mast cell cancer that had since March to spread and eventually caused my Doobie's life! My life has been altered because of these criminals. They robbed me of my best friend. So I say it again. Do not go there! read more

Trying to get an appointment, or find out information, or dealing with issues when they mess up, or getting prescriptions filled, or taking all your dog's teeth out. We used to think Mother Lode was an incredibly well run and professional business until the last few years, they've gotten worse and worse. We continued to have issues and were basically told to take our business elsewhere because we had the following issues and had the nerve to complain.... Getting an appointment: Nearly every time you call, weeks out, I don't think we ever received an appointment within 3 weeks of calling or were charged a same day, emergency fee. Getting prescriptions filled: Countless issues with their online store and in house pharmacy, when we brought the issues to management, we were actually thanked, as they weren't aware of the issues and lost emails. Getting calls returned: Our terrier was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer (completely missed by the team at Mother Lode btw) I called and left messages for Dr. Dre to speak about on-going care, I received two call backs....after hours....and never heard another word, apparently you need to play phone tag to speak to your vet at Mother Lode. However, the latest issue blows my mind, we dropped off our 11 year old terrier for dental work, they extracted 11 teeth, which seems excessive in my opinion, but what really upset us was, when we got him home, he had a HUGE cherry eye in his right eye AND they sent him home with CHEWABLE pain meds....now, I'm not a doctor but how am I supposed to get chewable pain meds into a dog, when he won't even let me touch his mouth?!?! I called the following week to express my concern and Dr. Cameron basically told us, we'd complained before, so we can take our business elsewhere. Apparently we are completely out of line to be upset our dog came home with a cherry eye he didn't have when we dropped him off?!?! No problem....the customer service and "care" at this practice has gone downhill in the biggest way since Dr. Tim sold the practice. Here is the FINAL insult....we had an appointment scheduled for January 26th, which we've been waiting nearly THREE WEEKS for, to have our senior cat seen, who needs attention sooner than later, Terry, the manager at Mother Lode just called me tonight, the 24th, to tell us WE ARE NOT WELCOME and the appointment has been cancelled. Now I have to scramble to find another vet practice to get him seen asap. This speaks volumes and is all I need to know, I've never been so disgusted by a business in my life. Nice to know you have support when your animals are in need of urgent attention. I could not be more disappointed with Dr. Mario, Dr. Cameron and Dr. Dre....shameful, we have been great customers for years but we have the nerve to complain due to lack of follow up and the fact you hurt our dog and we're told to take our business elsewhere?!? Unbelievable. I've included the original email below as I've been accused of being "abusive" to the team at Mother Lode, apparently the following email is considered abusive. Charlie was dropped off Friday morning at 8 a.m. for dental extractions. I picked him up at 3 and brought him home, when we noticed his RIGHT eye now has a huge, enflamed cherry eye. He has always had a cherry eye in his left eye, from the day we adopted him, the right eye was normal when he was dropped off! After being told you extracted 11 teeth in one sitting, which personally, I think is excessive on such a small dog and leads us to believe that such pressure & force applied to his head, caused significant trauma, resulting in this cherry eye!!! I really wish someone would have called to give us the option of pulling 11 teeth in one treatment, again, it REALLY seems excessive and traumatic. Realizing that NOBODY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS CARE NOTICED THE CHERRY EYE before releasing him, has me so livid and questioning your ability to care for our pets. Damage to his eye occurred under YOUR care, during his treatment AND NOBODY NOTICED!!! Then, this completely blows my mind.....CHEWABLE PAIN MEDS.....brilliant for a dog that won't let you touch his mouth AT ALL!!! I had to dissolve the 1/2 tablet and stick a tube down his throat to administer the medicine, he wouldn't eat for TWO DAYS. How exactly was I supposed to administer the medicine when his mouth was destroyed?!?! I'm so mad, I can't see straight....I'd love to know how this happened and how it was completely overlooked prior to his release?!?!?!? I've also been playing phone tag with Dr. Dre for over three weeks.....the ONLY reason I was able to speak to her was because I was in the office on Friday.....I was trying to get feedback on the stage 4 cancer Kit Kat diagnosis has, which was missed by everyone at MLVH. Dr. Cameron literally just saw her a month or two ago and must have missed the HUGE thyroid tumor in her neck, that has now spread to her lymph nodes and lungs....even my untrained fingers can easily feel them, the lack of follow up is frustrating, I guess it's up to us to continually call the office until we make contact!?! Hire more receptionists!!! Slow down. Man your phones. Where is the care? We have been patients for nearly a decade. Things are going down hill. I have called four times in the last year to schedule apts. Calls are always put on hold, rushed, frantic, feel like I can barely get a question in without being cut-off. Customer service went from a 10 to a 5. Slow the heck down and treat your customers with respect. I can only imagine how your elderly clientele must feel. I could barely keep up with you. At this point I have one foot in, and one foot out. Currently keeping other options open, turns out, as do many existing customers after talking with friends that also go there and asking on Facebook Groups. They seem to have such a large clientele now that they don't seem too worried about keeping the ones they have. A regular office visit almost three weeks out, seriously?! We went to see dr. Timothy Van Geem after getting a recommendation to have our dogs teeth cleaned and inspected. They invited us in to watch the process being done and were amazed to find by the x-rays how many teeth needed to be removed, even though we had been told by several other vets that her teeth were fine and being anesthetized is too hard on a small dog. Shame on us for not coming sooner to see dr. Tim. Our dog feels better then she has an a long time and her recovery has been 100%. The entire staff was a very professional and a pleasure to deal with. They are now going to be are veterinary of choice, and would highly recommend them not only for their complete dental expertise, but for all your animal needs. I started taking my cats to see Dr. Tim Van Geem at Mother Lode Vet Hospital in the 1993 after I moved to Grass Valley. I have been to quite a few Vets in my life (I am now 66) and "Dr. Tim" is by far THE most competent, caring, compassionate and qualified and knowledgeable Vet. that I have EVER had the pleasure of taking my cats to. I do NOT trust Vets anymore, NOT ONE, since having some extremely bad experiences with a number of them since, including Loomis Pet Hospital, and both The Country Vet in North Novato (Atherton Road) and "Animal Medical Center" in San Rafael who and to-date have allowed two animals to "escape" then which ran onto the nearby freeway and were killed after being struck by a car. They have the most disgusting operating room,. I am a plumber who did work in there and it was astonishing how INCREDIBLY filthy the place is!!!). Dr. Tim has cared for a number of my cats. He is still, 28 YEARS later, the ONLY Veterinarian that I trust. And this is now in 2021. I hope he is still in practice there. I now live 2 HOURS away and am still considering taking my cats to see Dr, Tim and ONLY him. He allows you to stay in the operating room WITH your animal during ANY procedure is being done. I'm here to offer some praise and gratitude for Dr. Cameron and his team for handling my 120 lb mastiff mix Moose who is absolutely terrified of the vet. We have tried every trick under the sun to administer vaccines to Moose who will howl, flail, and do just about anything to get away. Dr. Cameron is able succeed where other vets have given up, thanks to his very special nature which is equal parts gentle and persistent. He makes an incredibly stressful situation for both me and Moose just a little bit easier and I am so grateful. read more

I've gone to Mother Lode Vet for most of my 20 years here in Grass Valley and have been happy until they did their expansion on the building and number of vets. It became a zoo when trying to visit the vets.. lines at the counter with all three receptionists on the phone plus you never get the same vet. I brought my dog because he had alittle blood in his poop and they kept him for observation all day. Can you guess what that might cost? $600! And he was just observed..and I got some pills in that as well.. I'm a senior and think observing a dog for that kind of money is insane. + When I picked him up I waited in line for a full hour to pay my bill (as all the clerks were on the phone and the line was long at closing time.. seems like they could help seniors so we don't have to stand so long in line to pay the exorbitant rates. First off, I would like to say that I have been going to Motherlode Vet. ever since they opened back in the 80's ( I am not good with dates). Tim Van Geem was my animal's doctor, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Tim VanGeem has retired and I wish that the new people who took over on the phones would have the work ethics like they used to be. I know and have seen Tim's son, and his wife they both have worked on my animals. How could you turn down someone who has been going there for decades, spent thousands of dollars on my animals, and treat me like I wasn't worthy of an emergency appointment? I called today 6/27/2022 at 7:40am, I waited for a callback but no call ever happened. So I called back at 9:10 am. I told her my dog's name and mine, She said unfortunately there are no appointments and we gave today's emergency appointments out already. If they would have called me back right away I would have been one of the lucky ones to get an appointment. But instead, the woman on the phone suggested I go somewhere else and continued to say they are booked up for over a month. You don't have any emergency appointments for Tuesday? I don't think that my baby would appreciate being in pain for a month with a foxtail in her foot. I can see that Motherlode is not the place that I will be going to anymore. It breaks my heart to be kicked to the curb. Thanks for showing your true colors, It's not about your family member, it's all about the money. I might add that money is no object when it comes to my animals. Motherlode has gone downhill, If you are reading this save yourself some grief and find another vet. read more

Called today, Saturday, and not only were they open but got my dog Bentley in for a same day urgent care appointment. Let me just say this my dog is very grouchy on a good day and can nip when he doesn't feel well. Natalie was very calm and still managed to treat him. They were very professional and very honest about all of the treatment options. Especially when telling us that the oral medication at $12 was just as good as the injection at $110. The entire office was great and would recommend them to everyone. Fast friendly and professional service. A++++ read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. The staff and doctors are wonderful. You can tell how much they love working with animals.

Original owners are handing it off to new owners who don't seem to keep finances in mind as much as the old owners. Thinking of switching.
