It's our first time here at Tian Ya BBQ which is a decent Korean-style AYCE BBQ restaurant in Barrie. We usually go to ones in Markham and/or North York. Their fried spring rolls and scallops (4/5) were delicious with a good crisp on the outside, giving you a crunch with every bite. The spring rolls could use some more filling. The Volcano Roll was enjoyable (3.5/5). We liked how they had fried batter on the outside to elevate the texture of the dish. The cream cheese was a delight. The portions were big. The actual Korean-style BBQ was okay (3/5). The kimchi was a bit salty for us. We were hoping it would have more of the tangy, fermented taste to it as well. We liked that it was crunchy and tasted fresh. Their lettuce was also fresh. They did use iceberg lettuce instead of romaine which was different from what we regularly have at other places. We had pork, beef, beef short ribs and squid for grilling. Both the pork and beef were thinly sliced and tender. The beef short ribs were marinated well. Maybe a bit more sesame oil, garlic and ginger to the marinade mixture would really help bring out the sweetness and the umami of the meat. The cuts were okay; the meats could have been balanced with some fat/marbling to keep them juicy. We were also looking to have some ssamjang (fermented soybean paste) and sesame oil with salt to go with the meat. Overall, an okay place to go for AYCE Korean BBQ in Barrie.

We got the gamjatang jeongol and it was massive for two people. There were raw pork belly slices on top of the gamjatang so I had to make sure they were fully cooked before consuming. It was hard because there was a lot of soup so it made it extra difficult to push the raw items to the bottom. We ordered less spicy but it was still really spicy! It was flavourful and they gave lots of pork bone. We took the rest home and I had to add water to dilute it lol.

For a group of three, we went with budaejjigae (army stew), which is good for two to four people. The server seemed surprised that we weren't ordering more. If the menu lists that it can feed four people, it seemed like plenty for us, and we aren't big eaters. We received four side dishes -- cucumbers, radishes, nappa cabbage kimchi, and one we weren't familiar with. We asked the server what it was, and he said the name, but we still didn't know what it was. I asked him to repeat it, and he appeared quite annoyed that he had to say it more than once. The army stew wasn't cooking once the server had set it down on the table. It looked like the butane gas canister was empty. We used the call button to call the server back, since he was nowhere to be found. The army stew had luncheon meat, sausage, beans, zucchini, kappa cabbage, tofu, rice cakes, instant ramen, and a slice of American cheese. It was delicious.  Overall, the food is good, but the service is quite lacking. We felt like we were bothering the server by inquiring about the side dish, asking for extra chopsticks, and requiring another gas canister.

I've had almost everything. The chicken or pork Katsu curry is probably my favourite. The sauce is out of this world. And the veggies are fresh and cooked perfectly. The sushi rolls are good but I would suggest to them to go smaller! Good things come in small packages. Bibimbap was excellent. I could drink that sauce. Maybe a runnier egg. I love me some runny yolk. Highly recommend!

And even though it is small, they seem to have a lot of takeout orders as people kept going in for pick up. My partner ordered the bulgogi bento box that comes with miso soup, rice, salad, beef bulgogi and 3 pieces of bulgogi roll. Upon ordering I thought it sounded a little pricey but once the food came, I realized it was well worth it! So much food. And my partner scarfed down every bit, he said it was absolutely delicious. I ordered salted edamame, dynamite roll, and a Korean fried chicken skewer. Had I known how big the dynamite roll was, I would've only ordered that haha - it was huge! The edamame was a little too salty but it was still good and a decent portion as well. Last but not least, the Korean chicken skewer was very tasty also, with different sauces drizzled over it. My only suggestion is that they should have napkins at each table or at least easily accessible because we were only given one each and needed to ask for more. We will be back for sure, though!

After receiving the appetizer it took about 40 minutes to receive our main course sushi entrees. Aside from an apology there wasn't anything offered or comped for the long wait. All the sushi entrees we ordered were mediocre sadly. The quality of fish wasn't high. Unfortunately this is one of the few sushi restaurants in the area so I think that's why it has higher reviews.
