It's our first time here at Tian Ya BBQ which is a decent Korean-style AYCE BBQ restaurant in Barrie. We usually go to ones in Markham and/or North York. Their fried spring rolls and scallops (4/5) were delicious with a good crisp on the outside, giving you a crunch with every bite. The spring rolls could use some more filling. The Volcano Roll was enjoyable (3.5/5). We liked how they had fried batter on the outside to elevate the texture of the dish. The cream cheese was a delight. The portions were big. The actual Korean-style BBQ was okay (3/5). The kimchi was a bit salty for us. We were hoping it would have more of the tangy, fermented taste to it as well. We liked that it was crunchy and tasted fresh. Their lettuce was also fresh. They did use iceberg lettuce instead of romaine which was different from what we regularly have at other places. We had pork, beef, beef short ribs and squid for grilling. Both the pork and beef were thinly sliced and tender. The beef short ribs were marinated well. Maybe a bit more sesame oil, garlic and ginger to the marinade mixture would really help bring out the sweetness and the umami of the meat. The cuts were okay; the meats could have been balanced with some fat/marbling to keep them juicy. We were also looking to have some ssamjang (fermented soybean paste) and sesame oil with salt to go with the meat. Overall, an okay place to go for AYCE Korean BBQ in Barrie.

We had a hard time deciding on what to order because there was so much we wanted to try. We have a tradition of ordering Edamame whenever we visit a sushi restaurant. The top layer of Edamame was incredibly salty, as you can see in the picture. I wish they had mixed it before serving so the salt was a little more evenly distributed. We ordered the Sweet and Spicy Chicken because it sounded really unique. However, despite the name it was obviously Sweet and Sour Chicken. I really enjoyed eating it so I can't really complain, but it would be nice if the menu was more accurate. The sushi was fantastic. The EST Roll was excellent, but it was the SS Dragon Roll that was the highlight of the meal. I have never had such crisp and fresh shrimp tempura in a roll before. The difference was huge compared to all the other Dragon Rolls I've had at other restaurants lately. I would love to come here again to get some more Dragon Rolls.

The amount of tuna on top however was not proportional to the sushi as it was unevenly cut. The avocado seemed to be too big in comparison to the tuna. The construction of the rolls were a bit lacking. I was hoping for the tuna to have a bit of a kick as well. The tempura had a nice crunch to it and the creaminess of the avocado was a nice balance to this. Spicy Salmon Roll: The spicy salmon roll is a classic and its always my go-to order. The rolls were packed tightly which helped keep its integrity with each bite. The salmon was buttery with a delicate sweetness to it but again, I was hoping for it to be spicy. It didn't have that kick to it. Overall, both rolls had potential and needs slight improvement in terms of technique and depth of flavours.

Keeping in mind that the place is called Sushi and Tree, it was a cool detail to know that she was actually Korean (not Japanese). For a restaurant named Sushi and Tree, it was nice that they still have ramen available on their menu. While there are only just a couple of ramen dishes in the menu, the RS6 Spicy Katsu Cheese Ramen ($23) we sampled was special. The cheese slice that came with the ramen slowly melted and mixed into the broth, producing a rich, creamy soup. The generous portions of katsu that were part of the dish were also perfectly fried and complemented the rest of the dish nicely. Our group that came in all ordered the Spicy Katsu Cheese Ramen, and it did take a while for the order to be ready. Our hostess did mention that detail early and politely informed us about it. It was a welcome surprise that she gave us some spring rolls on the house for our wait. This restaurant is a good recommendation for the cheese ramen and the exceptional service. It was just a little unfortunate that the available indoor seating was not too many. As we were dining, several customers came in looking to dine, but had to cancel because there just were not enough table spaces to accommodate all of them.

They were all very tasty but the dynamite roll was especially delicious and it was massive! They also have lots of great vegetarian options on their menu.
